U.S. retail sales edged higher in December, showing that consumers kept spending through the holiday season, but the increase wasn't as strong as economists had hoped. At the same time, an unexpected rise in weekly jobless claims hinted at <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s">a cooling labor market.</a>
Retail and food services sales rose 0.4% last month, decelerating from upwardly revised 0.8% growth in November, according to advanced estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau released Thursday.
The outcome was slightly below the 0.6% increase economists expected, according to TradingEconomics estimates.
Compared to a year earlier, sales were up 3.9%, below November's 4.1% annual gain.
Excluding auto sales, retail sales were 0.4% higher on the month, accelerating from November&#8217;s 0.2% growth and matching expectations.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Some sectors thrive, others struggle</h3>
Consumer spending wasn't uniform across the board. Some sectors showed strength, while others weakened.
Miscellaneous store retailers marked a 4.3% monthly growth in sales, reversing the 3.9% drop witnessed in November. 
Sporting goods, hobby, musical instrument and book stores also showed a notable 2.6% increase.
E-commerce witnessed a growth slowdown, with nonstore retailers — such as Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) — seeing 0.2% growth, down from 1.8% in November.
Certain retailers struggled.
Building material, garden equipment and supplies dealers saw a 2% drop in December, with the sales decline worsening from November&#8217;s 0.8% dip.
Food services and drinking places also saw a contraction of 0.3% in monthly sales following a marginal 0.1% increase in November.
Excluding auto and gas sales, retail spending still rose 0.3%, showing an increase from November&#8217;s 0.2%.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Jobless claims rise</h3>
New unemployment claims climbed to 217,000 for the week ending Jan. 10, up from 203,000 the prior week, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The increase was above economist expectations of 210,000.
Continuing claims fell to 1.859 million, down from the previous 1.87 million and below expectations of 1.867 million.
Although one week's data isn't enough to confirm a trend, a continued rise in jobless claims could indicate that hiring is slowing, potentially weighing on consumer spending in the months ahead.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Market Reactions</h3>
The U.S. dollar marginally rose, with the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>) inching 0.2% higher, while Treasury yields ticked slightly lower, with the 10-year note falling 2 basis points to 4.66%.
Stock futures, on the other hand, were little moved. S&amp;P 500 futures were up 0.1%, while Nasdaq 100 futures gained 0.4%.
The gains followed a strong session on Wednesday when the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) jumped 1.8% after a softer-than-expected inflation report fueled speculation the Federal Reserve may cut interest rates sooner than previously expected.

(the "Company") entered into a three-year Enterprise Service and Advertising Agreement (the "Agreement") with ART19 LLC ("ART19"), a subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc. to move the existing network of PodcastOne programming to the ART19 hosting platform. Bitcoin To $300,000 In 2025, Asian Asset Management Firm Says

BlackRock Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BLK#NYSE">BLK</a>) discussed the role of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in its growth strategy during its <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/01/42997625/blackrock-beats-q4-estimates-fueled-by-record-inflows-116-trillion-aum-milestone">fourth-quarter earnings commentary</a>. Its Q4 results showed significant achievements and robust momentum across its ETF business. The asset management giant reported $390 billion in ETF net inflows in 2024, representing 11% organic asset growth and 7% organic base fee growth.
Crunching The Inflow Numbers
The fourth quarter alone saw $143 billion in ETF inflows, driven by seasonal portfolio reallocations and investor re-risking as U.S. equity indices and spot Bitcoin prices hit record highs. iShares products helped clients diversify and invest in key investment themes.
ETFs are a core driver of BlackRock&#8217;s growth strategy. &#8220;Since our acquisition of iShares, Blackrock has led in expanding the market for ETFs by making them more accessible and by delivering new asset classes like bonds or crypto and investment strategies like Active. Approximately a quarter of our $390 billion of ETF net inflows were into products launched in the last five years,&#8221; said BlackRock CEO Larry Fink.
Notably, its Bitcoin ETP emerged as the largest ETF launch in history, amassing over $50 billion in assets under management (AUM) within a year. Active ETFs also had a great year, recording $22 billion in net inflows in 2024.
European Expansion
In Europe, BlackRock scaled its ETF platform considerably, with $90 billion in net inflows in the year, driving the European platform's AUM closer to $1 trillion. The region has seen double-digit organic growth for two straight years, thanks to the rise of individual investors using online platforms and ETF savings plans. Moreover, increasing financial education among first-time investors also enabled them to enter the markets.
A large part of BlackRock's growth story constitutes acquisitions, including GIP, Preqin, and HPS, which continues to complement the firm's long-term vision of integrated public and private markets and a larger suit of technology offerings. According to Bloomberg analyst Eric Balchunas, the iShares Core S&amp;P 500 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IVV#NYSE">IVV</a>) raked in the second largest amount of inflows in 2024, at $86.8 billion.

Foresight Delivers First Batch Of Commercial Mass Production Systems To SUNWAY-AI In China

Hino Motors, a subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TM#NYSE">TM</a>), has reached a settlement with the U.S. Justice Department and other federal agencies<a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/hino-motors-toyota-subsidiary-agrees-plead-guilty-and-pay-over-16b-resolve-emissions-fraud"> regarding emissions testing fraud</a>. 
The company has agreed to pay over $1.6 billion to resolve allegations of fraudulent engine emissions testing and illegal engine imports. 
The agreement addresses violations that allowed the company to improperly import over 110,000 diesel engines into the U.S. between 2010 and 2022. 
The settlement includes both criminal and civil resolutions, with Hino Motors pleading guilty to criminal conspiracy charges.
The arrangement, which is still subject to approval by the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, also involves Hino's agreement to pay penalties and implement a series of corrective measures. 
According to the Justice Department, the company falsified engine certification data to bypass regulatory requirements, resulting in harmful air pollution. 
The agencies involved include Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), FBI, Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Department of Transportation's Office of Inspector General (DOT-OIG), National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and State of California.
The settlement includes a $521.76 million criminal fine, along with a $525 million civil penalty for Hino. In addition, the company must contribute $155 million to a mitigation program aimed at addressing the excess emissions resulting from the violations.
This initiative will replace older, less efficient marine and locomotive engines across 49 states, reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by over 41,000 tons. 
These efforts are expected to have the same impact as removing 110,000 heavy-duty trucks from U.S. highways.
Hino's actions between 2010 and 2019, including manipulating emissions data, caused significant environmental harm.
Additionally, a recall program will ensure that non-compliant engines from 2017-2019 meet regulatory standards.

Toyota Subsidiary Agrees To $1.6B Settlement Over Emission Data Fraud

Wellchange Holding Company Limited (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WCT#NASDAQ">WCT</a>) ("Company" or the "Wellchange"), an enterprise software solution services provider headquartered in Hong Kong, today announced the pricing of its public offering ("Offering") of 25,000,000 ordinary shares at a public offering price of $0.40 per ordinary share.
Gross proceeds, before deducting placement agent fees and other offering expenses, are expected to be approximately $10 million. The Offering is expected to close on January 17, 2025, subject to customary closing conditions.
Revere Securities LLC is acting as exclusive placement agent in connection with the Offering.
Pacific Century Securities, LLC is acting as advisor to the Company in connection with the Offering.
Ortoli Rosenstadt LLP is acting as counsel to the Company regarding U.S. securities law matters. Hunter Taubman Fischer &amp; Li LLC is acting as U.S. securities counsel for the placement agent.
