The landscape of environmental, social and governance (ESG) exchange traded funds continues growing in terms of population. These days, there are about 90 such funds or those with the &ldquo;socially responsible&rdquo; designation available on U.S. exchanges.

More importantly, data suggest investors, particularly younger generations, are embracing ESG funds. Currently, six U.S.-listed ESG ETFs have <a href="https://www.etf.com/channels/socially-responsible">more than $1 billion</a> in assets under management and some of those are funds that came <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/19/06/13990499/another-cheap-esg-etf-is-here">to market just this year</a>.

With this fund category expanding at such rapid rate, investors evaluating ESG funds should consider exactly what they&#39;re looking at and what their objectives. Some funds in this category are specifically <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/19/06/13990499/another-cheap-esg-etf-is-here">dedicated to clean energy themes</a> while others are backed by religious values while others take broader approaches.

Let&#39;s have a look at three under-the-radar ESG funds here.

<h3>Xtrackers SP 500 ESG ETF (SNPE)</h3>

The Xtrackers SP 500 ESG ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/SNPE#NYSE">SNPE</a>) is the only U.S.-listed ESG ETF that tracks the S&amp;P 500 ESG Index, the ESG offshoot of the famous S&amp;P 500. SNPE is also a stabelmate of the Xtrackers MSCI USA ESG Leaders Equity ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/USSG#NYSE">USSG</a>), which debuted earlier this year and is already one of the six ESG ETFs with over $1 billion in assets.

Don&#39;t sleep on SNPE, though. That fund is just a few months old and is already closing in on $100 million in assets. Importantly, there are some perks for long-term investors that come along with SNPE&#39;s underlying index.

&ldquo;The annualized volatility of the S&amp;P 500 ESG Index was slightly lower than the S&amp;P 500, at 14.63% and 14.86%, respectively. The annualized return was 0.02% higher for the S&amp;P 500 ESG Index than the S&amp;P 500,&rdquo; <a href="https://www.indexologyblog.com/2019/10/21/esg-why-not-insignificant-alpha-observed-between-the-sp-500-esg-index-and-the-sp-500/">according to S&amp;P Dow Jones Indices</a>.

<h3>Inspire Global Hope ETF (BLES)</h3>

With nearly $151 million in assets under management, the Inspire Global Hope ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/BLES#NYSE">BLES</a>) is the second-largest ETF backed by religious investing principles.

BLES tracks Inspire Global Hope Large Cap Index, which is comprised of emerging and developed market large-cap stocks taken from the Russell 1000 Index, MSCI EAFE Index and MSCI Emerging Markets Index,

Adding U.S. stocks to the mix helps as highlighted by BLES year-to-date return of almost 18%. That&#39;s better than either the MSCI EAFE Index or the MSCI Emerging Markets Index.

<h3>VanEck Vectors Green Bond ETF (GRNB)</h3>

The original ETF dedicated to green bonds, or debt issued to finance environmentally friendly projects, the VanEck Vectors Green Bond ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/GRNB#NYSE">GRNB</a>) is at the forefront of an epic growth trend in the fixed income universe.

The fund, which holds 115 bonds, follows the S&amp;P Green Bond Select Index, which is &ldquo;comprised of labeled green bonds that are issued to finance environmentally friendly projects, and includes bonds issued by the supranational, government, and corporate issuers globally in multiple currencies,&rdquo; <a href="https://www.vaneck.com/etf/income/grnb/overview/">according to VanEck</a>.

Data confirm the green bond market is booming.

&ldquo;The Climate Bonds Initiative (CBI) published an update yesterday detailing how green bond and loan issuance for 2019 has just passed $200bn, marking an all-time high for the market and setting the stage for annual issuance reaching between $230 and $250bn by year end,&rdquo; <a href="https://www.businessgreen.com/bg/news/3083011/green-bond-market-showing-buoyant-growth-through-2019-report-shows">reports Green Business</a>.

Sometimes, all it takes to change the fortunes of scuffling exchange traded funds is one well-heeled advisor or investor to decide to allocate to these funds.

That could prove to be the case for the Inspire Global Hope Large Cap ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/BLES#NYSE">BLES</a>) and the Inspire Small/Mid Cap Impact ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/ISMD#NYSE">ISMD</a>), which recently turned two years old.

<h3>What Happened</h3>

Earlier this month, volume in the two faith-based ETFs exploded and data confirm it was buying volume, courtesy of a Pennsylvania-based registered investment advisor.

On March 12, &ldquo;BLES recorded 1.13 million shares traded, ISMD recorded 952,400 shares traded and IBD recorded 978,200 shares traded,&rdquo; <a href="https://www.inspireetf.com/etf/inspire-global-hope-large-cap-etf/">according to a statement</a> from Inspire Global, the funds&#39; issuer. &ldquo;This buying volume represented roughly $80 million in net new assets and propelled Inspire&rsquo;s total assets under management (AUM) to $361 million as of March 14.&rdquo;

<h3>Why It&#39;s Important</h3>

Ambassador Advisors is the RIA that jumped into BLES and ISMD. That firm, which has $520 million in assets under management, is transitioning those assets to faith-based investment, such as BLES and ISMD.

BLES, which targets the Inspire Global Hope Large Cap Equal Weight Index, now has a respectable $136.20 million in assets under management, or more than a third of Inspire&#39;s total ETF assets under management, <a href="https://www.inspireetf.com/etf/inspire-global-hope-large-cap-etf/">according to issuer data</a>.

Thanks to the inflows from Ambassador Advisors, the mid- and small-cap ISMD has <a href="https://www.inspireetf.com/etf/inspire-small-mid-cap-impact-etf/">$78.18 million</a> in assets under management. That ETF tracks the Inspire Small/Mid Cap Impact Equal Weight Index, which is a collection of the 500 &ldquo;most inspiring&rdquo; mid- and small-cap stocks.

About half of ISMD&#39;s lineup is allocated to companies with market values of $1 billion to $2 billion while another 50 percent is allocated to companies with market caps of $2 billion to $3.5 billion.

<h3>What&#39;s Next</h3>

BLES and ISMD are two of Inspire&#39;s four ETFs. BLES charges 0.38 percent per year, or $38 on a $10,000 investment, while ISMD has an annual fee of 0.61 percent.

Inspire&#39;s scoring methodology penalizes companies with exposure to abortion, pornography, human rights violations, LGBT activism, alcohol, tobacco and gambling and those companies are excluded from the firm&#39;s ETFs.

The universe of socially responsible investing ideas is expanding with a growing number of exchange traded funds focusing on religious values. Another such fund appeared Wednesday with the debut of the James Biblically Responsible Investment (CBOE: JBRI).
The new ETF is a multifactor fund and tracks the eVALUEator Biblically Responsible Index. That benchmark was &ldquo;created to screen stocks within the S-Network US Equity Large/Mid-Cap 1000 Index and, using eight different criteria, filter out any objectionable stocks from a biblical perspective,&rdquo; according to <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/james-investment-research-introduces-james-biblically-responsible-investment-etf-jbri-300573481.html">James Investment Research</a>, JBRI&#39;s issuer.&nbsp;
Traditional funds, including ETFs, adhering to environmental, social and governance principles usually exclude alcohol and tobacco makers and companies engaged in gambling and pornography. JBRI does that as well, but goes further by screening out companies with exposure to abortion, what the issuer deems alternative lifestyle and producers of anti-family entertainment.

	More Details On The New ETF</h3>
&ldquo;The James ranking system using relative value, relative strength and profitability, is then applied to the remaining companies from an initial universe of 1,000,&rdquo; according to James Investment Research. &ldquo;The resulting ETF consists of the 100 top-ranked companies remaining after the screens. The holdings are then equal-weighted, with every company beginning each quarter after the rebalance at 1 percent.&rdquo;
Fifty-seven percent of JBRI&#39;s index are large-caps, while the remainder are mid-caps. James Investment Research has more than four decades as an active manager of values-based products. At the end of the third quarter, the firm had $5.1 billion in assets under management.
JBRI allocates almost 19 percent of its weight to the industrial sector and 16.4 percent to technology stocks. The health care and energy sectors combine for over 27 percent of the new ETF&#39;s roster.

	The Competition&nbsp;</h3>
Several religiously focused ETFs have come to market this year. In November, California-based Inspire Investing bolstered its lineup of Christian values ETFs with the launch of the Inspire 100 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/BIBL#NYSE">BIBL</a>).
Earlier in 2017, Inspire launched the Global Hope Large Cap ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/BLES#NYSE">BLES</a>) and the Inspire Small/Mid Cap Impact ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/ISMD#NYSE">ISMD</a>).
The Global X S&amp;P 500 Catholic Values ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/CATH#NASDAQ">CATH</a>), which launched in April 2016, now has $126.5 million in assets under management.

On Tuesday, California-based Inspire Investing bolstered its lineup of Christian values ETFs with the debut of the Inspire 100 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/BIBL#NYSE">BIBL</a>).
BIBL tracks the cap-weighted Inspire 100 Index, which features exposure to U.S. companies with market values of above $20 billion. The index&#39;s 100 member firms meet biblically responsible investing standards.
&ldquo;We select portfolio companies using the Inspire Impact Score methodology, our proprietary process that identifies companies doing amazing things like working to cure cancer, providing clean water solutions and otherwise being a blessing to their communities, customers, workforce and the world, while at the same time avoiding investments in companies involved in immoral activities like abortion, pornography and human trafficking,&rdquo; <a href="http://www.inspireetf.com/etf/inspire-100-etf/">according to Inspire Investing</a>.
<h3>What&#39;s Inside</h3>
BIBL features exposure to 10 of the 11 sectors found in the S&amp;P 500 with telecommunications being the exception. The new ETF&#39;s <a href="http://www.inspireetf.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Fact-Sheet_BIBL_17Q3.pdf">largest sector allocation</a> is to industrials, followed by health care and consumer discretionary.&nbsp;
BIBL has smaller allocations to sectors such as consumer staples, energy, materials, technology and utilities.
Inspire donates 50 percent or more of its corporate profits per year to causes including Bible, distribution, clean water initiatives, Syrian refugees and other causes.
<h3>A Growing Lineup</h3>
BIBL is the fourth ETF in the Inspire suite. Earlier this year, the issuer launched the Global Hope Large Cap ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/BLES#NYSE">BLES</a>) and the Inspire Small/Mid Cap Impact ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/ISMD#NYSE">ISMD</a>). The firm also has a fixed income product, the Inspire Corporate Bond Impact ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/IBD#NYSE">IBD</a>).
The Inspire Global Hope Large Cap ETF follows the equal-weight Inspire Global Hope Large Cap Equal Weight Index, which defines large-cap as companies with market values of $10 billion and up. The index holds 400 stocks. BLES allocates half its weight to U.S. stocks, 40 percent to international developed markets and 10 percent to emerging markets.

<h3>What Are Christian-Themed ETFs?</h3>
Christian-themed ETFs can be considered part of the fast-growing <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/16/11/8740683/gender-diversity-powers-a-rookie-etf">environmental, social and governance (ESG)</a> sub-sector of the ETF space. However, past iterations of religiously-inspired ETFs have shown differences when compared against other ESG funds. In the case of the Inspire ETFs, these exclude companies with ties to standard ESG no-nos such as alcohol, gambling and pornography as companies with checkered human rights track records and those that support the LGBT community.&nbsp;
<h3>2 New Inspire ETFs</h3>
The Inspire Global Hope Large Cap ETF follows the equal-weight Inspire Global Hope Large Cap Equal Weight Index, which defines large-cap as companies with market values of $10 billion and up. The index holds 400 stocks. BLES allocates half its weight to U.S. stocks, 40 percent to international developed markets and 10 percent to emerging markets. The new ETF charges 0.61 percent per year, or $61 on a $10,000 investment.
The Inspire Small/Mid Cap Impact ETF follows the Inspire Small/Mid Cap Impact Equal Weight Index.
&ldquo;Under normal circumstances the index will be comprised of 50 percent U.S. mid cap companies with market cap between $2 billion&ndash;3.5 billion, and 50 percent U.S. small cap companies with market cap between $1 billion&ndash;2 billion.
