Approximately 1 billion rubber tires are discarded into landfills annually amid a lack of recycling incentives and still emerging recycling technologies, creating additional environmental problems on top of those created by the initial production of the tires themselves.

That&rsquo;s what Pittsburgh-based startup Smart Tire Recycling (STR) says it is working on with its patented technology now moving from the laboratory to commercialization. The result is recovered carbon black (rCB), which is the chemical version of its virgin equivalent but with zero emissions.
<h2>Safety in Numbers</h2>
And STR is not alone. In fact, the company doesn&rsquo;t want to be; it welcomes other players in the industry.
That&rsquo;s why it is celebrating the recent news of an $80 million investment in the sector.
Los Angeles-based commercial real estate company CIM Group <a href="https://www.cimgroup.com/press-releases/cim-group-expands-investment-end-life-tire-recycling-company-bolder-industries">ponied up that amount</a> to expand its investment in the Bolder Group, a Colorado company focused on recycling rubber tires precisely to recover the vital carbon black material. STR describes the company, which was founded in 2011, as a pioneer in the sector.
STR sees the move as a ringing endorsement of the growing credibility of pyrolysis, the technique used to recycle carbon black through the thermal decomposition of materials in an inert atmosphere.
&ldquo;This kind of investment is a huge success for our industry as a whole,&rdquo; STR says. &ldquo;We view developments such as this as additional signs which point to the investment community&rsquo;s confidence that the new processes and technologies we are developing are working and are here to stay.&rdquo;
<h2>Not New but Improved</h2>
Pyrolysis is not a brand new technology, but STR wants to improve it with its processes to heighten the yield of rCB.
And the tire industry could need it with STR estimating that only about 7% of the total amount of rCB required by the industry in the U.S. alone is currently being processed and sold. Big tire players such as Bridgestone Corp. (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/brdcy#OTC">BRDCY</a>) are taking note and <a href="https://www.rubbernews.com/tire/bridgestone-begins-manufacturing-tires-recovered-carbon-black">increasingly looking at the sector.</a>
STR believes more efficient tire recyclers are needed, and more tires need to be recycled efficiently.&nbsp;
&ldquo;There is plenty of space in the industry for multiple companies to flourish,&rdquo; STR says.

While the startup company states it is currently blazing a trail with its innovative non-pneumatic Air Suspension Wheel (ASW) by offering an alternative to the expensive and environmentally unfriendly rubber tire for heavy industry vehicles, it is also looking further afield than that.
The company sees the potential for its ASW across the entire existing tire market, valued at $322 billion in 2022 globally and with an estimated compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.4%. The ASW is an airless, mechanical wheel composed mainly of steel that is designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle it is attached to and which is completely recyclable.
Instead of only focusing on the off-the-road (OTR) <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/money/best-sectors-to-invest-in-right-now/">sector</a> where its ASW can be used with giant vehicles employed in such industries as mining, what if the product can be adapted for use by more regular over-the-road traffic? Think Volvo Group (NASDAQ Stockholm: VOLV B) or Daimler (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ddaif#OTC">DDAIF</a>) trucks. Even on a Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tsla#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) or Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/f#NYSE">F</a>) vehicle?
&ldquo;ASW technology can be applied to all verticals where traditional rubber tires are used, and this market is immense,&rdquo; GACW says. The company has already entered a project agreement with an unnamed global over-the-road rim manufacturer for ASW testing in commercial trucks and cars, it adds. 
<h2>Current Versus Future Focus?</h2>
The push for the ASW is all about safety, cost and the environment.&nbsp;
Rubber tires, especially in the OTR <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/money/best-sectors-to-invest-in-right-now/">sector</a>, can be prone to possible explosion and have short lifetimes on such vehicles, making them a very expensive proposition. One such tire can cost up to $75,000 and lasts only 6 to 9 months on average, GACW says.
In addition, there is a poor record of recycling such tires with an estimated 81% of tires being disposed of on-site, contributing to up to 28% of the world&rsquo;s microplastic waste, GACW says.
For now, the focus will remain on the OTR <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/money/best-sectors-to-invest-in-right-now/">sector</a> as the company seeks to ramp up production and have more testing in the field, with full commercialization predicted for 2023. That is a $30 billion market on its own, and the company says it has no direct competitors other than the manufacturers of rubber tires such as Bridgestone Corp. (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/brdcy#OTC">BRDCY</a>) and Michelin (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/mgddy#OTC">MGDDY</a>).
It does have several competitors in the mid-sized non-pneumatic market, including Michelin and Bridgestone. The over-the-road market would be largely uncharted territory.

Right now, too many of the world&rsquo;s tires get dumped into landfills at the end of their natural life due to ineffective recycling incentives. Only about 15% of the approximately 1 billion tires discarded annually end up getting recycled, STR claims.
In addition, questions remain over the long-term viability of current recycling methods such as pyrolysis, says STR. Pyrolysis decomposes materials such as rubber at high temperatures in an inert atmosphere.
The Pittsburgh-based start-up has an alternative vision &mdash; extract the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_black">carbon black </a>so vital to tire production from old rubber using patented green technology. That way, you have a much-needed product that bypasses the harvesting of expensive rubber while being earth-friendly at the same time.
&ldquo;Our vision is to transform the toxicity of tire pollution into a virtuous cycle which restores the health of our planet,&rdquo; says Mendel Bassman, co-Founder and CEO.
<h2>Fewer Toxic Tires</h2>
Most current tire production is toxic. As well as using petrochemical and coal feedstocks in its production, mining carbon black causes emissions such as carbon monoxide and methane, according to the <a href="https://www3.epa.gov/ttnchie1/ap42/ch06/final/c06s01.pdf">U.S. Environmental Protection Agency</a>. About 80% of the world&rsquo;s mined carbon black goes into tire production. It&rsquo;s no secret that the country has wanted to diminish its impact on the environment, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-u-s-is-turning-green-what-will-this-climate-plan-cost-and-who-will-pay-11634997601">pledging to go carbon neutral in the next 30 years</a> thanks to their verbal agreement with China at the <a href="https://www.npr.org/2021/11/11/1054648598/u-s-and-china-announce-surprise-climate-agreement-at-cop26-summit">COP26 UK climate conference</a>. The push to go green is no longer becoming an option, but a necessity.&nbsp;
If you can recover the necessary carbon black from the old tire using much greener technology, you might have a solution.
By using supercritical pressure and temperature water technology, STR says it has just such an answer. The company&rsquo;s solution creates faster production of recovered carbon black (rCB) as well as higher caliber yield, the company claims. And it creates<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCgbIoCjxVU"> zero emissions</a> while doing so.
rCB is much in demand. Only about 7% of what the U.S. tire industry needs, for example, is currently being produced, STR says.
<h2>Tire Giants Looking at rCB Too</h2>
Major tire producers like Bridgestone Corp. (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/brdcy#OTC">BRDCY</a>) began <a href="https://www.rubbernews.com/tire/bridgestone-begins-manufacturing-tires-recovered-carbon-black">scaled production of rCB 2 years ago</a>. Korean producer Hankook Tire &amp; Technology Co. Ltd. (KSE: 161390.KS) is another tire giant interested in rCB.&nbsp;
As well as the rCB, STR&rsquo;s technology produces recovered oil and steel. The company is able to sell both the rCB and received oil at a premium, it says.
Now, the challenge is making it all commercially viable, taking it from the laboratory to an eventual shop floor.
&ldquo;We have proven the viability of our production process at lab scale and we are currently in the process of developing our first demonstration plant in order to scale to full commercial capabilities,&rdquo; the company says.

Green Technology That Can Turn That Old Tire Into Something Shiny?

Rubber tires should be recycled, but more often than not they are simply dumped into landfills or on-site at industrial locations. Some of them find their way into the world&rsquo;s oceans.
You can even see the results of this from space. The world&rsquo;s largest tire dump site is in Kuwait, where about <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/kuwait-starts-recycle-massive-tyre-graveyard-2021-09-07/">42 million unwanted tires</a> currently reside in the desert and can be seen by the likes of <a href="https://www.npr.org/2021/10/13/1045377132/william-shatner-star-trek-captain-kirk-blue-origin-space-flight">William Shatner or Jeff Bezos</a> from the stars above.
Even tires discarded at sea are <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2021/10/29/world/hermit-crabs-trapped-tires-scn/index.html">trapping hermit crabs </a>inside them.
The existence of such a huge amount of discarded tires highlights a massive problem of what to do with all that unwanted rubber. It&rsquo;s a problem Pittsburgh-based <a href="https://www.smarttirerecycling.com/">Smart Tire Recycling</a> (STR) says it is poised to solve with its green technology designed to recover one very important product from such unloved tires.
That product is recovered carbon black (rCB). Newly mined carbon black is widely used in the production of rubber tires, and STR says its rCB is just as high quality as the original material.
<h2>Zero-Emission Technology Advantage</h2>
Not only that but STR&rsquo;s rCB recycling technology has zero emissions, according to the company.
Newly mined carbon black, conversely, produces some of the most toxic emissions known, STR said. About 70% of mined carbon black is used in the tire industry by companies such as Goodyear Tire &amp; Rubber Co. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gt#NASDAQ">GT</a>) and Bridgestone Corp. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/brdcy#NASDAQ">BRDCY</a>). The carbon black industry is worth $20 billion with continued growth expected to take that figure to almost $26 billion in 2025.
Up to now, a technique known as pyrolysis has been used to obtain rCB. The problem, according to STR, is that yields have often been disappointing using such technology. Its technology, by contrast, produces highly sustainable yields of rCB. The company, a mixture of engineers, scientists, and financial professionals, said it is aiming to become the largest producer of rCB in the next 5 years with production locations across the U.S.
Once commercialized, the company says it will make money both from the tipping fees it will earn from processing unwanted tires from landfill sites and from revenue raised by producing the rCB, oil, and steel in its recycling technology process.

Golf legend Tiger Woods was injured Tuesday morning in a single-vehicle SUV crash in Los Angeles.
What Happened:&nbsp;Woods&rsquo; vehicle was involved in a rollover and sustained major damages, according to a statement issued by the Los Angeles Sheriff&rsquo;s Department.
First responders arrived on the scene at 7:12 a.m. PT and Woods was &ldquo;extricated from the wreck with the &lsquo;jaws of life&rsquo; by Los Angeles County firefighters and paramedics, then transported to a local hospital by ambulance for his injuries.&rdquo;
Woods was the sole passenger in the vehicle.

Bridgestone Corporation (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/brdcy#OTC">BRDCY</a>) is <a href="https://www.bridgestone.com/corporate/news/pdf/2020051101en.pdf">replacing</a> its Chief Operating Officer Akihiro Eto, who will retire from all executive posts but retain his position on the board.
<h3>What Happened</h3>
Bridgestone, the world&rsquo;s top tiremaker by market share, announced top management changes on Monday. Eto is leaving&nbsp;his position<a href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Companies/Bridgestone-replaces-chief-operating-officer-after-just-year-and-a-half"> less than two years</a> after he was appointed and will be replaced by Vice Chairman Masahiro Higashi, who will join as the global COO on July 1.
The tiremaker commented on the timing of the appointment, &ldquo;We are constantly reviewing our management team and seek to place the right people in the right positions,&rdquo; reported Nikkei Asian Review.
<h3>Why It Matters</h3>
The change in executive leadership at Bridgestone comes less than two months after Shuichi Ishibashi took the helm as the company&rsquo;s CEO, according to the Review.
A spokesperson said that there is &ldquo;nothing unusual&rdquo; about Higashi&rsquo;s promotion, and Tsuya, Eto, and Ishibashi &ldquo;have already been working together as a team of three up to now.&rdquo;
