Nov 21 (Reuters) - A slew of crypto companies including Ripple, Kraken and Circle are jostling for a seat on President-elect Donald Trump's promised crypto advisory council, seeking a say in his planned overhaul of U.S. policy, according to several digital asset industry executives.
Campaigning at <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/finance/trump-cites-china-competition-vowing-create-bitcoin-stockpile-2024-07-27/">a July bitcoin conference</a> in Nashville, Trump promised a new council as part of a crypto-friendly administration. His transition team is discussing how to structure and staff it, and which companies should be included, the people said.
Several top U.S. crypto companies are clamoring for seats at the table. Among them are venture firm Paradigm, said one source, while venture capital giant Andreessen Horowitz's crypto arm a16z is also expected to grab a spot.
"It's being fleshed out, but I anticipate the leading executives from America's bitcoin and crypto firms to be represented," said David Bailey, CEO of Bitcoin Magazine who arranged for Trump to speak at the July conference and has spoken with the President-elect about bitcoin policy.
"People are eager to advise and give input," Bailey said.
A Kraken spokesperson declined to comment, while a spokesperson for a16z did not respond to requests for comment.
Coinbase <a href="https://www.reuters.com/markets/companies/COIN.O">(COIN.O), opens new tab</a> CEO Brian Armstrong recently met with Trump, said a source familiar with the matter, confirming a Monday Wall Street Journal report. It was unclear what they discussed. The source added that Coinbase, the largest U.S. crypto exchange, was also interested in being on the council.
Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire told the New York Times this month he wants to be on the council, a company spokesperson noted.
The crypto council would likely be housed under the White House's National Economic Council, which coordinates and implements the President's economic policies, or a separate White House apparatus, two of the people said.
It is expected to advise on digital asset policy, work with Congress on crypto legislation, establish Trump's promised bitcoin reserve and coordinate between agencies including the Securities and Exchange Commission, Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Treasury, they and other executives said. The council may also include enforcement representatives and former policymakers, one of the sources said.

Trump's transition team, which did not respond to a request for comment, is also discussing creating a crypto "tsar" role, two sources said. One added the tsar would likely lead the council. Trump's team is <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-11-20/trump-team-mulls-creating-first-ever-white-house-crypto-role">vetting candidates, opens new tab</a> for that role, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday.
Former CFTC Chair Heath Tarbert, chief legal officer at Circle, and former Republican CFTC commissioner Brian Quintenz, head of policy for a16z crypto, have been advising the Trump transition team on crypto policy, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/trump-transition-team-considers-current-former-cftc-officials-agency-chair-2024-11-14/">Reuters previously reported</a>.
Excitement over a crypto-friendly Trump administration has helped push bitcoin to record highs and <a href="https://www.reuters.com/technology/bitcoin-breaks-95000-first-time-optimism-over-trump-crypto-plans-2024-11-21/">closer to the long-awaited $100,000 milestone</a>.
Trump courted support and campaign donations from the sector with promises to be a "crypto president" and end President Joe Biden's crackdown on crypto companies that regulators accused of flouting securities and anti-money laundering laws.
The industry is <a href="https://www.reuters.com/sustainability/boards-policy-regulation/crypto-industry-pushes-policy-sea-change-after-trump-victory-2024-11-14/">pushing for</a> executive orders guaranteeing crypto companies' access to banking services, an end to enforcement actions and other changes.
Some consumer groups have warned the crypto industry should not be able to write its own rules, and some of the sources said ethics considerations could slow personnel appointments. But others said it makes sense for industry experts to have a say in critical policy issues.
"It's absolutely the wise choice to put together a council of people who... understand how both the industry ought to be regulated and how to situate the industry to be a strategic asset," said Nathan McCauley, CEO of crypto platform Anchorage Digital, who has urged the Trump team to reverse Biden's stance on crypto.
While presidential advisory councils are not a new concept, there has never been one dedicated to cryptocurrencies, which did not exist until bitcoin's launch in 2009. Biden has multiple councils, including on Science and Technology which was established via executive order in first month he took office.
Kristin Smith, chief executive of crypto trade group the Blockchain Association said setting up the crypto council is something Trump "could do very quickly."

Operating margin is the percentage of profit a company makes after all its costs and expenses. In the quarter, the operating margin was 17.8%. This means that for every dollar of sales, the company earned 17.8 cents.
Going forward, Williams raised its operating margin guidance to a range of 17.8% to 18.2%. If operating margins are increasing, it means the company is becoming more efficient.
But the move higher has stalled out. There are two reasons for this.
The first is profit-taking. Whenever a stock makes a large move higher, there are traders and investors who will take advantage of the move to lock in profits.
The second reason is &#8220;buyer's remorse.&#8221;
As you can see on the chart, the stock made a large move higher in May and formed a peak around the $172.50 level. Some of the investors and traders who bought at the peak came to regret their decision to do so after the price plummeted. They have held onto a losing position ever since.
Now that they have a chance to exit their positions at breakeven, they are placing sell orders. These orders and the orders from the profit takers have, at least for now, made the rally stall out or maybe even end. There is a chance the stock will head lower.

Wyoming Republican Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) on Thursday proposed converting Federal Reserve-held gold certificates into Bitcoin to establish <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/24/11/42080839/cynthia-lummis-says-strategic-bitcoin-reserve-could-take-shape-soon-after-trump-raises-his-hand-and-is-sworn-in">a 20-year strategic</a> Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) reserve.
In an <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSKRwaK4Lq4">interview</a> with CNBC, Lummis outlined how this initiative could bolster the US economy, reduce national debt and position Bitcoin as a key asset for the country.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Gold-To-Bitcoin Conversion: A Debt-Free Solution</h3>
Lummis stressed that the proposal wouldn't require new taxpayer dollars. 
Instead, the government could leverage its existing resources, particularly gold certificates held at the Federal Reserve's 12 banks. 
These certificates, currently valued at 1970s prices, could be updated to reflect their fair market value, sold and reinvested into Bitcoin.
"We wouldn't have to spend any new dollars," she explained, pointing out that the United States already holds over 200,000 Bitcoin in asset forfeiture funds, which could act as a foundational reserve. 
Lummis also emphasized the fiscal prudence of the strategy: "This would be an asset that could help shore up the US dollar as the world reserve currency."

Highlighting Bitcoin&#8217;s unique properties, Lummis described it as immutable, easily stored, and a hedge against inflation. 
She believes a strategic Bitcoin reserve could mitigate inflation&#8217;s effects, provide financial stability and potentially strengthen the US dollar's global standing.
"American people are still hurting from inflation, from high prices, and they want the national debt reduced," Lummis said. "These are ways to do it with an asset that is immutable and can easily be held by the federal government in a variety of vaults."
Lummis compared the proposal to the historical gold standard, noting its relevance in today's digital age. "We got off the gold standard a long time ago, but this would be a way to create a reserve for the future," she said.

TJX Companies expects fourth-quarter GAAP EPS to be between $1.12 and $1.14, below the consensus estimate of $1.17. For the fourth quarter, the company continues to expect consolidated comparable store sales to be up 2% to 3%.
For FY25, the company revised its GAAP EPS forecast to $4.15 – $4.17, slightly above the prior guidance of $4.09 – $4.13 and in line with the consensus of $4.16. For the full year fiscal 2025, the company continues to expect consolidated comparable store sales to be up 3%
TJX shares fell 0.5% to trade at $119.20 on Thursday.

Nvidia's Post-Earnings Jitters: Can NVDA Stock Regain Its AI-Fueled Momentum?

Donald J. Trump's social media company is considering developing a cryptocurrency payment service, according to a trademark application filed this week, the latest sign of the president-elect's embrace of the crypto industry.
Trump Media &amp; Technology Group <a href="https://tsdr.uspto.gov/#caseNumber=98859006&amp;caseSearchType=US_APPLICATION&amp;caseType=DEFAULT&amp;searchType=statusSearch">filed an application on Monday</a> for a service called TruthFi, which it described as a platform for crypto payments, financial custody services and trading in digital assets.
The application was light on details about how the project would work or how close it was to fruition. But the initiative appears to be a bid by Trump Media to diversify its business beyond Truth Social, a social media platform whose business relies on Mr. Trump to continuously post messages to his most loyal supporters.
Any large-scale crypto project would likely require Trump Media to acquire another firm, given that it has fewer than three dozen employees. This week, shares in the crypto trading platform Bakkt surged, after the Financial Times <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/d7f921d5-3668-4b6b-a98d-2681ad73610f">reported</a> that Trump Media was in talks to buy it.
&nbsp;
Trump Media did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Bakkt, which is losing money, <a href="https://investors.bakkt.com/news/news-details/2024/Bakkt-Statement-on-Transaction-Rumors/default.aspx">put out a statement</a> on Tuesday saying it does not comment on market speculation or rumors.
Josh Gerben, a Washington D.C.-based trademark lawyer, said that the filing is a way for Trump Media to reserve the TruthFi name if it goes forward with a crypto business. He said that companies can usually reserve a name for as long as a few years. But companies typically file a trademark application with the intent to use it.
"In my experience, most of the time if a client is going to file an application, there is something going on," Mr. Gerben said.
Trump Media is currently valued at around $6.5 billion, despite taking in just over <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/11/06/business/trump-media-stock-price.html">$1 million in revenue</a> in the third quarter — all of it from advertising on Truth Social. With Truth Social struggling to gain new users and advertising despite Mr. Trump's popularity, Trump Media needs new businesses to bolster its revenue.
Mr. Trump has no formal role in the company that bears his name, but he owns nearly 53 percent of Trump Media's stock, and that stake — valued at $3.4 billion — is his most valuable asset. His eldest son, Donald Jr., is a member of Trump Media's board, which is stocked with loyalists to the president-elect.

&#8220;We concluded the first stage of our North Star Strategy in fiscal 2024 achieving both strong results and momentum,&#8221; said Jerome Grant, CEO of Universal Technical Institute, Inc. &#8220;We met or exceeded guidance across all key metrics with full year revenue and adjusted EBITDA increasing over 21% and 60% year-over-year, respectively. These results reflect our consistent execution on the growth, diversification, and optimization tenets of our strategic plan as we continue ramping newly launched programs across both divisions, while further improving margins through workforce and facilities optimization.
Universal Technical Institute said it sees FY25 earnings of 93 cents to $1.01 per share on revenue of $800 million to $815 million.

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Thursday&#8217;s Stock Movers</h1>
<ul>
<li>Nvidia Corp. fell 0.6% despite surpassing Street&#8217;s consensus estimates on both earnings per share and revenue during the third quarter. Analysts have raised price targets with Wedbush at $175, Baird at $195 and Barclays at $160.</li>
<li>Despite the dismal reaction by Nvidia, semiconductor stocks, as tracked by the iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXX#NASDAQ">SOXX</a>) rose 1.9%. Major gainers on Thursday were Micron Technology Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MU#NASDAQ">MU</a>), up 4.7%; Marvell Technology Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MRVL#NASDAQ">MRVL</a>), up 3.9% and Applied Materials Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMAT#NASDAQ">AMAT</a>), up 3.7%.</li>
<li>PDD Holdings Inc. &#8211; ADR (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PDD#NASDAQ">PDD</a>) tumbled nearly 10% after missing earnings and revenue estimates.</li>
<li>Other stocks reacting to earnings included Deere &amp; Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DE#NYSE">DE</a>), up 8.8%; Warner Music Group Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WMG#NASDAQ">WMG</a>), down 8%; Palo Alto Networks Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PANW#NASDAQ">PANW</a>), up 1.4% and Snowflake Inc. Bird Global files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy just two years after SPAC IPO

Bird Global (OTCMKTS:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/brds-stock-quote/">BRDS</a>) stock has lost its wings with shares down by more than 80% today. This follows news that the micromobility firm has filed for <a href="https://ir.bird.co/news-events/press-releases/detail/115/bird-enters-into-comprehensive-restructuring-support">Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection</a> in the United States. The company&rsquo;s operations in Canada and Europe are not included in the bankruptcy filing.



Bird&rsquo;s U.S. operations will operate as usual, meaning that its electric scooters will stay active for the time being.



Bird has announced that it will enter into a financial restructuring process in order to support its long-term health. Its first- and second-lien lenders have agreed to a restructuring support agreement, which will see Apollo Global Management division MidCap Financial and other second-lien lenders providing the company with $25 million in debtor-in-possession (DIP) financing.



In addition, Bird will begin the process of selling off its assets under a court-supervised process. Furthermore, the company has initiated a &ldquo;stalking horse&rdquo; agreement with its lenders that will set a price floor for its valuation. Bird will wait for higher offers in the meantime, while the sale process is expected to be completed within 90 to 120 days.



&ldquo;We are making progress toward profitability and aim to accelerate that progress by right-sizing our capital structure through this restructuring,&rdquo; said interim CEO Michael Washinushi. &ldquo;We remain focused on our mission to make cities more livable by using micromobility to reduce car usage, traffic, and carbon emissions.&rdquo;



<h2>5 Investors Betting Big on BRDS Stock</h2>



Tracking institutional ownership is important, as these large investors provide liquidity and support for stocks. However, Bird&rsquo;s <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/BRDS/holders/?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAIm8PqPDt37wo-Cym_jWSunn_xpQq76Q1YZvgAlKGOIbemBfFA_bYN2Z4BeYaGu-dbOlbSkZ6w1KtVEw-8gwo-L2Y7YvXZX3iAlNe1mrMETyyn374fLhP_-veFWlGp3PSVRsUV2F8MEgfGgLBBwlQD7vQ1NEcYUo1M60g7Pof5mC">institutional ownership</a> as of the third quarter was only 11.08%. Perhaps these investors took note of Bird&rsquo;s declining financials and decided to deploy their capital elsewhere.



According to <a href="https://whalewisdom.com/stock/swbk">WhaleWisdom</a>, only eight 13F filers reported a stake in BRDS stock during Q3, down from 45 filers during Q2. It appears that this figure only includes filers who submitted a Q3 13F update, as BRDS stock has additional institutional shareholders who did not submit a Q3 update.

<li>FMR: 1.19 million shares. FMR acquired its entire stake during November 2023.</li>



<li>Valor Equity Associates: 890,998 shares. Valor&rsquo;s stake is accurate as of Q4 2022.</li>
