Tesla-Supplier Panasonic Energy Targets Reduced Reliance On China For US Battery Supplies, Says It Is &#39;No.1 Objective&#39;

Chinese EV maker BYD Co Ltd (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) reportedly brought hundreds of Chinese workers with irregular visas to work at its upcoming factory in Brazil.
What Happened: In late December, Brazilian authorities halted the construction of the plant that BYD is building in Salvador, Bahia<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/24/12/42667814/brazil-authorities-halt-work-at-byd-factory-site-after-workers-found-in-slavery-like-conditions"> after finding 163 workers living and working in conditions it termed analogous to "slavery."</a> Brazil&#8217;s Labor Prosecutor's Office (MPT) then also said that the conditions at the factory &nbsp;constituted "forced labor." 
The 163 workers are now either leaving or have already left the country, Liane Durao, a labor inspector who heads the probe initiated by labor authorities in Bahia, told Reuters. Durao also said that BYD would be fined for each worker rescued, without detailing the amount.
The company has now pledged to comply with local labor laws for its remaining hundreds of workers in Brazil, Reuters reported, while noting that about 500 Chinese workers were brought to work at the factory.
The Brazilian government has now suspended temporary visa issuance to BYD, the report said.
Why It Matters: BYD previously said that it has cut ties with its contractor&nbsp;Jinjiang Group after Brazilian authorities flagged the issue. Jinjiang, meanwhile, said in December that the Brazilian authority's portrayal of its employees working at the Chinese EV giant's factory in Brazil as "enslaved" is "<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/24/12/42680844/byd-contractor-denies-allegations-of-slavery-like-working-conditions-at-factory-site-in-brazil">completely inconsistent with facts.</a>"
BYD which sells its EVs in Brazil, was planning to start production at the factory in Brazil in 2025. It is unclear if the investigation into working conditions at the factory will delay its opening. 
The EV maker did not immediately respond to <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/dashboard">Benzinga&#8217;s</a> request for comment.

Chief&nbsp;Jensen Huang&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/42838231" rel="noreferrer noopener">announced the company's</a> $3,000 desktop-sized personal AI supercomputer, Project DIGITS, powered by the GB10 Grace Blackwell&nbsp;super chip, during his CES 2025 keynote.
Huang also presented&nbsp;the new&nbsp;RTX 5000 GPU&nbsp;series, laptops featuring the RTX 50-series, and the&nbsp;Grace Blackwell NVLink 72&nbsp;system.

Huang told the WSJ that the ChatGPT moment for general robotics is just around the corner.
Nvidia product director Justin Walker <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/01/06/nvidia-releases-blackwell-gaming-chips-for-pcs-called-rtx-50-series-.html" rel="noreferrer noopener">told</a> CNBC that despite being an AI company and a gaming company, the gaming side still benefits tremendously from being an AI company.
Nvidia also announced its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/01/42822625/big-techs-date-with-antitrust-alphabet-meta-amazon-brace-for-legal-showdowns-in-2025" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cosmos foundation models</a>, which generate photorealistic video to train robots and self-driving cars at a more affordable cost.
Cosmos will be available on an "open license," similar to Meta's&nbsp;Llama 3 language models. Huang expects Cosmos to do the same for robotics and industrial AI as Llama 3 has done for enterprise AI, Reuters reports.
Bank of America's Vivek Arya told Reuters that he will await possible upside from Nvidia's robotics by drawing [parallels with the metaverse and autonomous cars.

Chinese EV giant BYD Co Ltd (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDF#OTC">BYDDF</a>) overtook Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) yet again as the world&#8217;s biggest battery electric vehicle (BEV) seller in the fourth quarter of 2024. 
What Happened: Tesla reported on Thursday that it delivered <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/01/42766117/tesla-stock-tumbles-on-q4-deliveries-whats-going-on">495,570 BEVs in the three months</a> through the end of December, significantly lower than the 595,413 BEVs <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/01/42758760/tesla-rival-byd-marks-50-growth-in-december-passenger-vehicle-sales-likely-to-trump-tesla-in-q4-bev-sales-yet-again">sold by BYD</a> in the period.
Though BYD managed to trump Tesla in the fourth quarter, the American EV giant delivered 1,789,226 BEVs through 2024, retaining its position as the bestselling pure EV brand for the year. BYD, meanwhile, managed to deliver only 1,764,992 BEVs in the twelve months, or 24,234 units less than Tesla. 
Why It Matters: BYD first took over Tesla as the world&#8217;s largest BEV seller in the last quarter of 2023. Tesla took back the title in the first quarter of 2024 and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/12/42680542/tesla-or-byd-which-ev-giant-will-sell-more-battery-electric-vehicles-in-q4">retained it for three consecutive quarters</a>. 
2024 marks the first year that Tesla&#8217;s annual deliveries have fallen (1.1%) as compared to the previous year. In 2023, Tesla delivered 1,808,581 vehicles around the globe. To mark a growth over last year, the company had to deliver at least 514,926 vehicles in the three months through the end of December.&nbsp;However, the company could not even breach the 500,000 target. 
BYD&#8217;s 2024 BEV sales, meanwhile, marked a growth of 12% year-on-year, according to a previous report.

Tesla Overtaken by BYD Again: Chinese Player Becomes World's Biggest EV Seller In Q4

Chinese electric vehicle makers, including Nio Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NIO#NYSE">NIO</a>) and Li Auto Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LI#NASDAQ">LI</a>) are intensifying competition by reportedly extending financial incentives to 2025.
The automakers are following the lead of industry giants Tesla Inc and BYD Company in offering substantial discounts and attractive financing options to lure buyers in the world&#8217;s largest automobile market, according to a report from Reuters.
Last week, Li Auto said it would provide cash subsidies of 15,000 yuan (about $2,055) per vehicle, coupled with a three-year zero-interest financing scheme, per the report.
Similarly, Nio introduced a comparable zero-interest loan program for its<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/tech/24/12/42681165/nios-onvo-brand-helps-spur-delivery-growth-with-cheaper-offering" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Nio- and Onvo-branded EVs</a>.
Li and Nio clocked a 16.2% and 72.9% year-on-year jump <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/01/42758540/us-listed-chinese-ev-startups-clock-delivery-growth-in-december-li-auto-tops-the-chart-mona-m03-spurs-xpeng-nios-onvo-breaches-10000-monthly-delivery-milestone" rel="noreferrer noopener">in sales, respectively, in December</a>.
The report further notes that BYD, a prominent player in the local market, has been providing discounts of up to 11.5% on its hybrid and electric models since December.
The Chinese EV maker marked about a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/01/42758760/tesla-rival-byd-marks-50-growth-in-december-passenger-vehicle-sales-likely-to-trump-tesla-in-q4-bev-sales-yet-again" rel="noreferrer noopener">50% year-on-year jump in the sales</a> of new energy passenger vehicles in December.
The report further notes that Tesla has extended a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/09/41068397/tesla-cranks-up-the-heat-in-china-extends-5-year-0-interest-loan-offer-to-oct-31" rel="noreferrer noopener">10,000 yuan discount</a> on Model Y loans until the month&#8217;s end.
These moves come amid a protracted price war for years and show no signs of abating.
Last year, China expanded its stimulus program to subsidize purchases of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/24/07/39968313/nio-xpeng-li-auto-benefit-from-chinas-increased-vehicle-subsidies" rel="noreferrer noopener">passenger vehicles and consumer electronics</a>.
Car industry margins in China averaged 4.4% from January through November, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/emerging-markets/24/12/42700628/chinas-ev-price-wars-hit-auto-profits-smaller-players-struggle-as-margins-shrink" rel="noreferrer noopener">down from 5.0% in 2023</a>.
China is expected to sell over 12 million EVs in 2025, doubling 2022 figures, while traditional car sales may drop below 11 million.
To further stimulate the economy, Chinese authorities reportedly plan to issue 3 trillion yuan in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/12/42671739/chinese-stocks-surge-on-stimulus-plans-to-counter-us-tariff-risks" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">special treasury bonds in 2024</a>. Some of these funds are expected to bolster subsidy programs aimed at encouraging consumer spending on vehicles and other goods.

EV Price War Heats Up As Chinese Automakers Extend Subsidies: Details

Chinese EV giant&nbsp;BYD Co Ltd. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDF#OTC">BYDDF</a>) said on Wednesday that the company sold 509,440 new energy passenger vehicles in December, marking a jump of nearly 50% from last year, thanks to a major jump in plug-in hybrid passenger vehicle sales.
Sales Numbers For December:&nbsp;Battery electric passenger vehicle sales of the Chinese player rose to 207,734 in December, marking a rise of about 9% from the corresponding month of last year.
Plug-in hybrid passenger vehicle sales in the period rose about 102% to 301,706 units.
The company also sold 5,369 commercial vehicles in December, including 1,375 buses.
Production Numbers: BYD produced 460,719 passenger vehicles in December, including 189,759 battery-electric vehicles and 270,960 plug-in hybrids.
BYD stopped making combustion engine vehicles in March 2022 to focus on electric vehicles. The company makes both battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, collectively referred to as new energy vehicles. 
Why It Matters: BYD overtook its American rival Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) in the fourth quarter of 2023 as the world's biggest seller of battery-electric vehicles, selling 526,409 battery-electric vehicles. Tesla, however, took back the title in the first quarter of this year and has been holding on to it since.
BYD delivered 595,413 battery electric vehicles in the last quarter of 2024, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/12/42680542/tesla-or-byd-which-ev-giant-will-sell-more-battery-electric-vehicles-in-q4">likely beating Tesla</a>. According to Tesla researcher Troy Teslike, the company is expected to report just 501,000 vehicle deliveries in the quarter.
Tesla is expected to officially report its fourth quarter deliveries<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/previews/24/12/42745852/tesla-q4-delivery-preview-will-2024-stock-gains-hold-as-growth-slows"> after the market opens on Jan. 2.</a> 
For the full year 2023, Tesla delivered 1,808,581 vehicles around the globe. To mark a growth over last year, the company has to deliver at least 514,926 vehicles in the three months through the end of December. Tesla has not delivered over 500,000 vehicles in a quarter to date, making this an ambitious target.

Bloomberg cites&nbsp;Cui Dongshu, the PCA secretary general, as saying that the industry must slash costs and boost efficiency due to the dwindling margins.
China&#8217;s car market, especially its EV sector, has experienced intense rivalry for at least the last two years, prompting a price war.

China's EV Price Wars Hit Auto Profits, Smaller Players Struggle as Margins Shrink

Chinese EV giant BYD Co Ltd (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) is reportedly offering discounts of up to 11.5% on its Song Pro DM-i and Qin Plus EV vehicle models.
What Happened: The Song Pro DM-i and the Qin Plus EV now have a starting price of 99,800 yuan, marking a discount of 11.5% and 9.1% from their price before the discount, Reuters reported. The discount is valid until Jan. 26.
BYD is China&#8217;s biggest EV seller and a major rival to American EV giant Tesla Inc. However, unlike Tesla, BYD makes both plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles, together referred to as new energy vehicles. 
Why It Matters: In the last quarter of 2023, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/12/42680542/tesla-or-byd-which-ev-giant-will-sell-more-battery-electric-vehicles-in-q4">BYD sold 526,409 battery electric vehicles</a>, effectively replacing Tesla as the world's biggest seller of BEVs. Tesla in that quarter delivered just 484,507 units.
Tesla regained its position as the world's top seller of BEVs in the first quarter after selling 386,810 BEVs, 86,696 units more than BYD. Tesla kept up its lead in both Q2 and Q3. 
While it is unclear who will take the lead in the fourth quarter, both are trying to entice buyers with offers. Tesla is currently offering a discount of 10,000 yuan on the purchase of inventory <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/24/12/42681583/chinas-ev-industry-likely-to-outpace-us-and-allies-but-elon-musks-tesla-could-still-make-gains">Model Y vehicles in China</a>, its second-biggest market outside the U.S.

BYD Offers Discounts Of Up To 11.5% On Select EVs As Year End Nears

Electric vehicle sales are expected to outperform combustion engine vehicle sales in China in 2025, outrunning the pace of EV adoption in the U.S. and Europe.
What Happened: Beijing had set a target in 2020 for EVs to account for 50% of car sales by 2035. However, as <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/0ebdd69f-68ea-40f2-981b-c583fb1478ef">per</a> Financial Times, the target would be reached next year, ten years ahead of schedule.
As per the report, EV sales in China, including battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids (together referred to as new energy vehicles or NEVs), will rise by 20% year-on-year to over 12 million cars next year.
Combustion engine vehicle sales, meanwhile, will fall by over 10% to less than 11 million, the report said, citing estimates by investment banks UBS and HSBC and research groups Morningstar and Wood Mackenzie.
This marks a stark contrast to the situation in Europe and the U.S. where EV demand is slowing down.

According to data from the China Passenger Car Association, BYD sold 417,232 new energy passenger vehicles in China in November on retail. Tesla and Geely sold 73,490 and 120,896 new energy vehicles, respectively, in the period.

China's EV Industry Likely To Outpace US And Allies, But Elon Musk's Tesla Could Still Make Gains

BYD Co Ltd&#8216;s (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) contractor Jinjiang Group on Thursday said that the Brazilian authority&#8217;s portrayal of its employees working at the Chinese EV giant&#8217;s factory in Brazil as &#8220;enslaved&#8221; is &#8220;completely inconsistent with facts.&#8221;
What Happened: Jinjiang said that their workers were unjustly labeled as enslaved, making them feel insulted.
"Being unjustly labeled as ‘enslaved' has made our employees feel that their dignity has been insulted and their human rights violated, seriously hurting the dignity of the Chinese people. We have signed a joint letter to express our true feelings," Jinjiang said on Weibo, as translated by Reuters news agency.
Lin Yunfei, general manager of branding and public relations at BYD, also reposted the statement. Yunfei also alleged that the allegations are an attempt by &#8220;foreign forces&#8221; to smear Chinese brands and the country.
"In the matter of smearing Chinese brands, smearing China, and attempting to undermine the friendship between China and Brazil, we have seen how relevant foreign forces maliciously associate and deliberately smear," Yunfei said in a post on Weibo.
BYD did not immediately respond to <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/dashboard">Benzinga&#8217;s</a> request for comment.
Why It Matters: Brazilian authorities said on Monday that they have <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/24/12/42667814/brazil-authorities-halt-work-at-byd-factory-site-after-workers-found-in-slavery-like-conditions">halted the construction of the plant that BYD&nbsp;is building in Salvador</a>, Bahia after finding workers living and working in conditions analogous to "slavery."
Authorities ordered that the construction of the factory in Bahia be stopped after rescuing 163 people working at the site, according to a statement by the Labor Prosecutor's Office (MPT).
The authorities shut down the workers' lodgings and communicated the same to both BYD and construction firm Jinjiang Construction Brazil Ltd, one of the contractors hired by the company to carry out the construction, it added.
The MPT also noted that the conditions constituted "forced labor." If a worker were to terminate their employment contract after six months, they would leave the country without any pay for their work since the company deducted their airfare to and from Brazil, in addition to other costs, the statement said.
BYD was planning to start production at the factory in Brazil in 2025.

Chinese EV giant BYD Co Ltd (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) overtook its American rival Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) in the fourth quarter of 2023 as the world&#8217;s biggest battery electric vehicle seller. In Q2 and Q3 this year, Tesla kept its lead ahead of BYD in global BEV deliveries despite hardships. 
In <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/12/42259569/chinese-ev-behemoth-and-tesla-rival-byd-marks-68-growth-in-november-sales-on-rising-popularity-of-plug-in-hybrid-evs">October and November</a>, BYD cumulatively sold 387,679 battery-electric vehicles. The company now needs to sell around 112,400 BEVs in December to cross 500,000 BEV sales in a quarter yet again. 
As for Tesla, it is unclear how many vehicles the company has sold thus far this quarter given it only releases sales data at the end of every three months.
For the full year 2023, Tesla delivered 1,808,581 vehicles around the globe. To mark a growth over last year, the company has to deliver at least 514,926 vehicles in the three months through the end of December. Tesla has not delivered over 500,000 vehicles in a quarter to date, making this an ambitious target. 
Furthermore, according to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), the company is faced with <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/12/42571913/tesla-registrations-drop-by-nearly-41-in-november-in-eu-dragging-down-optimism-for-over-500000-ev-deliveries-in-q4">demand challenges in the European Union</a> which might weigh heavily upon the company&#8217;s annual delivery target. 
Financials: 
For the third quarter between July and September, BYD's operating revenue rose 24% to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/10/41647639/teslas-chinese-rival-byd-outshines-elon-musks-ev-giant-in-quarterly-revenue-for-first-time-since-202" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">201.12 billion yuan ($27.55 billion)</a>, the company said in a filing.
Tesla, meanwhile,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/10/41501607/tesla-q3-earnings-highlights-eps-beat-revenue-miss-shares-climb-on-2025-timeline-for-lower-cost-evs" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reported a total revenue</a>&nbsp;of only $25.18 billion in the same quarter, making it the first time since 2022 that BYD has trumped&nbsp;Elon Musk&#8217;s&nbsp;EV giant in quarterly revenue. BYD stopped making combustion engine vehicles in March 2022 to focus on electric vehicles.
Despite reporting higher revenue than Tesla in the third quarter, BYD&#8217;s net profit continued to trail behind<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/10/41501607/tesla-q3-earnings-highlights-eps-beat-revenue-miss-shares-climb-on-2025-timeline-for-lower-cost-evs" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">&nbsp;Tesla&#8217;s net income of $2.167 billion</a>. The company reported a diluted earnings per share of 4 yuan (55 cents) for the quarter, lower than Tesla&#8217;s adjusted earnings per share of 72 cents.

Toyota Motor Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TM#NYSE">TM</a>) saw a 6.2% <a href="https://global.toyota/en/company/profile/production-sales-figures/202411.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">drop</a> in global production in November, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/12/42321484/fords-mustang-mach-e-sales-skyrocket-383-in-november-amid-growing-ev-momentum" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">with a total of 869,230 vehicles manufactured</a>.

The news came a day after Ford Motor Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>) and General Motors Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>) announced similar donations. Both of these U.S. automakers also pledged to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/24/12/42562982/toyota-shares-are-on-the-rise-whats-going-on" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">provide vehicles for the inauguration</a>.
Additionally, Toyota's North American division received $4.5 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Energy's ARPA-E program. This funding supports a project aimed at enhancing the circular supply chain for electric vehicle (EV) batteries.
In partnership with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and Baker Hughes' Waygate Technologies, Toyota is working on improving battery disassembly, component classification, and recycling to reduce waste and emissions.

Toyota's Global Output Slips 6.2%, While Company Donates $1 Million to Trump's Inaugural Fund

BYD Co., Ltd. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>), the Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) giant, has reportedly expanded its global footprint by entering the Ethiopian market.
On December 21, the company partnered with Ethiopian distributor Moenco, a subsidiary of the Inchcape Group, to launch its brand in the East African country, CnEV Post <a target="_blank" href="https://cnevpost.com/2024/12/24/byd-enters-ethiopia/" rel="noreferrer noopener">reports</a>.

The brand unveiling, held in Addis Ababa, introduced five of BYD&#8217;s battery electric vehicle (BEV) models, including the compact Seagull hatchback and the Tang SUV, marking a significant step in BYD&#8217;s efforts to expand its presence in Africa.
This move comes on the heels of BYD&#8217;s recent entry into<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/12/42485764/tesla-rival-byd-enters-omani-market-launches-five-ev-models-as-part-of-gulf-expansion-report" rel="noreferrer noopener"> the Omani automotive market</a>. Earlier this month, the company celebrated a brand launch in Muscat, where it also opened three local stores.
In Oman, BYD introduced five models, including the Han, Yuan Plus, Seal, Song Plus DM-i, and Qin Plus DM-i, all aligning with the country&#8217;s push for sustainable development under Vision 2040.
However, BYD&#8217;s international expansion has not been without challenges. Brazilian authorities recently halted the construction of a BYD plant in Salvador, Bahia, after rescuing 163 workers living <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/24/12/42667814/brazil-authorities-halt-work-at-byd-factory-site-after-workers-found-in-slavery-like-conditions" rel="noreferrer noopener">in what they described as &#8220;slavery-like&#8221; conditions.</a>
Authorities shut down the workers&#8217; lodgings and issued a statement in cooperation with BYD and construction contractor Jinjiang Construction Brazil Ltd. While BYD continues to promote green mobility, this setback highlights the ongoing challenges the company faces in its global growth strategy.

BYD Expands Into Ethiopia With Launch of 5 EV Models: Report

Brazilian authorities said on Monday that they have halted the construction of the plant that Chinese EV giant BYD Co Ltd. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) is building in Salvador, Bahia after finding workers living and working in conditions analogous to &#8220;slavery.&#8221;
What Happened: Authorities ordered that the construction of the factory in Bahia be stopped after rescuing 163 people working at the site, according to a statement by the Labor Prosecutor&#8217;s Office (MPT).
The authorities shut down the workers&#8217; lodgings and communicated the same to both BYD and construction firm Jinjiang Construction Brazil Ltd, one of the contractors hired by the company to carry out the construction, it added.
MPT&#8217;s statement said that the workers lived in conditions analogous to slavery across four main lodgings. In one of the lodgings, the workers slept on beds without mattresses and 31 workers shared one bathroom, it said. 
At the construction site, there were only eight badly maintained chemical toilets for about 600 workers, it said, while also noting multiple accidents at the site. In one case, a worker suffered an accident after not having a break for 25 days.
The MPT also noted that the conditions constituted &#8220;forced labor.&#8221; If a worker were to terminate their employment contract after six months, they would leave the country without any pay for their work since the company deducted their airfare to and from Brazil, in addition to other costs, the statement said. 
BYD did not immediately respond to <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/dashboard">Benzinga&#8217;s</a> request for comment.
Why It Matters: BYD is China&#8217;s largest EV maker and makes plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles which are sold in China, Europe, and also Brazil. In November alone, the company made 540,588 new energy vehicles as compared to 316,510 in the corresponding month of 2023.
BYD <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/01/36839203/warren-buffett-backed-byd-sees-higher-profits-for-fy23-after-taking-over-tesla-as-biggest-ev-seller" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">took over Tesla</a>&nbsp;as the world's largest BEV seller in the fourth quarter of 2023. However, Tesla took back the crown in the first quarter of 2024 and has been holding on to it since.
For the third quarter between July and September, BYD reported operating revenue of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/10/41647639/teslas-chinese-rival-byd-outshines-elon-musks-ev-giant-in-quarterly-revenue-for-first-time-since-202" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">201.12 billion yuan ($28.25 billion)</a> and net profit of 11.6 billion yuan. 
The company&#8217;s new factory in Bahia was expected to be operational by next year.

Brazil Authorities Halt Work At BYD Factory Site After Workers Found In 'Slavery' Like Conditions

The Tesla Model Y electric vehicle from Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) might not win title of Europe's bestselling vehicle for a second straight year, ending a short reign <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/electric-vehicles">for electric vehicles.</a>
What Happened: The Model Y broke records for <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/01/36768363/tesla-q4-earnings-highlights-revenue-miss-eps-miss-model-y-a-global-bestseller-next-gen-vehicle-upd">electric vehicles in 2023</a> and became the first EV to be the bestselling car globally for a full year. In Europe, it was the bestseller for 2023.
While the Model Y was Europe's <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/23/11/35969553/tesla-model-y-is-likely-bestselling-vehicle-in-europe-for-2023-the-record-breaking-numbers-why-its-i">top seller in 2023,</a> a repeat now appears unlikely.
According to <a href="https://www.autonews.com/retail/sales/ane-europe-top50-november-2024/#:~:text=The%20Tesla%20Model%20Y%20will,as%20Europe's%20top%2Dselling%20car.">data </a>from Automotive News Europe, the Model Y now ranks behind the Dacia Sandero, an internal combustion engine hatchback from French company Renault.
The data, shared by <a href="https://electrek.co/2024/12/19/tesla-model-y-likely-to-lose-its-crown-as-top-selling-car-in-europe-to-dacia-sandero/">Electrek</a>, shows that the Model Y ranks sixth through the month of November. 
The Sandero led the way in November with 21,506 vehicles sold, with the Volkswagen Tiguan second at 18,618.
Year-to-date, the Model Y has 181,781 units sold in Europe, which ranks around 65,000 units behind the Dacia Sandero.
Tesla is offering several incentives through the end of year that could push the vehicle higher up the list, including a year of free charging at Tesla Supercharger locations to anyone who buys a Model Y before the end of the calendar year.
The BYD Song from BYD Co (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) is mentioned as a top performer for the year with sales up 42% year-over-year.

Why It's Important: With a price point of $13,051, the Dacia Sandero is more appealing to many consumers in Europe looking for a less expensive new car and not willing to spend a higher amount to get an electric vehicle.
Tesla taking the top spot in Europe in 2023 was a great storyline for electric vehicles, but could be hard to replicate without cheaper EV models hitting the country. The Model Y refresh named Juniper and likely coming in 2025, could see Model Y figures get a boost worldwide in 2025.

Tesla Model Y Could Lose Bestselling Title In Europe To This Non-EV Car

BYD Co., Ltd. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>), a Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturer, has officially entered the Omani automotive market, marking a significant step in its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/large-cap/24/12/42420450/chevron-upgrades-pasadena-refinery-supports-us-gulf-coast-fuel-supply-growth" rel="noreferrer noopener">expansion into the Gulf region</a>.
The company recently held a brand launch in Muscat, Oman, and opened three local stores, CnEV Post <a target="_blank" href="https://cnevpost.com/2024/12/13/byd-enters-oman-market/" rel="noreferrer noopener">reports</a>.

In other news, BYD is reportedly on track to achieve a major sales milestone, with the company forecasting 4.25 million units sold in 2024.
This suggests that the company is on pace to sell around 500,000 vehicles in December, <a target="_blank" href="https://cnevpost.com/2024/12/13/byd-on-track-sell-4-25-million-cars-2024/" rel="noreferrer noopener">CnEV </a>Post adds.
In November, BYD sold 506,804 NEVs, marking its second consecutive month of over 500,000 units sold.
Year-to-date, BYD&#8217;s cumulative sales reached 3.76 million units, reflecting a 40% year-on-year growth.

Tesla&#8217;s strong rebound in China comes as the company competes with local EV makers like BYD Co., Ltd. While BYD&#8217;s insurance registrations were at 85,000 for the week ending December 8, Tesla saw a solid increase, registering 21,900 units, its second-best week of 2024.
This marks a notable improvement compared to 18,700 registrations the prior week. Despite trailing BYD, Tesla&#8217;s progress shows that the company is steadily gaining momentum in the competitive Chinese EV market.
Other players in the Chinese EV sector, such as Li Auto Inc. and new entrant Xiaomi Corp., are also making strides.
Li Auto registered 12,600 units last week, while Xiaomi recorded 5,400 registrations, highlighting the growing competition Tesla faces in China.

Tesla's China Sales Recover, Model Y Accounts for Over 60% of November Sales

American EV giant Tesla Inc.&#8217;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) China sales are picking up momentum despite trailing behind Chinese EV maker BYD Co Ltd. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>).
What Happened: Insurance registrations for Tesla vehicles in China came in at 21,900 units for the week that ended on December 8, marking its second-best week in 2024, according <a href="https://cnevpost.com/2024/12/10/china-ev-insurance-registrations-week-ending-dec-8-2024/">to</a> a report by CnEVPost.
The week prior to that, the company had just 18,700 registrations.
Tesla&#8217;s Chinese competitor BYD, meanwhile, had 85,000 registrations, down 13.09% from the week before. BYD, unlike Tesla, makes both battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.
EV startup Li Auto is following Tesla close on heels with weekly registrations touching 12,600 last week. China&#8217;s newest EV entrant, Xiaomi, also had 5,400 insurance registrations last week. Insurance registrations in China are considered a proxy for sales.

From a technical standpoint, TSLA stock is in clear bullish territory, with the stock price comfortably above its five-, 20- and 50-day EMA (exponential moving averages). The current trend points to continued upside, with key indicators such as the eight-day SMA (simple moving average) ($344.68), 20-day SMA ($329.15) and 50-day SMA ($277.09) signaling strong momentum.
