'Labour poised to announce £100m levy on gambling companies' - The Guardian

The cryptocurrency XRP Token (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/xrp/usd">XRP</a>) from Ripple is soaring in price over the last week with a new filing for an XRP exchange-traded fund adding to<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/24/11/42122141/xrp-price-up-8-what-is-going-on-with-ripple"> optimism for the crypto.</a>
What Happened: Asset manager WisdomTree<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/24/11/42170669/wisdomtree-files-for-xrp-etf-trust-report"> filed to establish</a> a trust entity as part of a step towards launching a potential XRP ETF.
The move follows other companies like Bitwise that have filed to launch cryptocurrency ETFs.
With Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs already approved, cryptocurrency experts see ETFs based on other top 10 cryptos by market capitalization like Solana, Dogecoin and XRP as the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/24/11/42011875/solana-ripple-litecoin-etfs-may-be-on-the-table-under-trump-administration-industry-experts-think">next to be approved.</a>
Ripple Labs, the issuer of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/money/ripple-xrp-price-prediction">XRP</a>, has been involved in several regulatory issues with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) previously, which could impact the approval of the ETFs and has also impacted the price of XRP in the past.
With SEC Chairman Gary Gensler<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/24/11/42131449/with-gary-gensler-preparing-to-quit-in-2025-secs-crypto-cases-likely-to-quietly-go-away-amid-trumps-pro-bitcoin-stance-says-pantera-capitals-katrina-paglia"> set to resign</a> in January and a new pro-crypto White House administration potentially taking shape, some see past cases against cryptocurrency companies quietly going away.
In July 2023, Ripple received a favorable ruling in a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/23/07/33219187/major-victory-for-ripple-xrp-sales-not-classified-as-investment-contracts-judge-rules" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">case dating to 2020.</a>
U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres determined the sale of the XRP token by Ripple is not an offer of "investment contracts." The ruling came after Ripple spent a significant amount of money<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/23/05/32272013/ripple-ceo-reveals-a-staggering-amount-spent-on-legal-battle-with-sec" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> fighting claims that XRP was a security.</a>
Torres said that some assets can serve as an investment contract, including digital tokens. In the case of the XRP token, it is not a security, according to the ruling.
Alongside the ruling, the judge found Ripple's sales of XRP to institutions to be in violation of the Securities Act. This ruling could become a key item to watch for the cryptocurrency sector moving forward.
The case between the SEC and Ripple remains active, with the SEC appealing and having until January to submit additional filings.

If You Invested $1,000 in XRP:&nbsp;The XRP token hit a low of $0.41055 on Dec. 22, 2020, the day the charges were announced.
XRP would fall to a low of $0.1748 on Dec. 29, 2020, hitting new lows for the year. On that day, an investor could have purchased 5,720.82 XRP with $1,000.
The $1,000 investment would be worth $8,409.61 today, representing a gain of 741%.
The return of the hypothetical investment in XRP has outperformed the broader stock market.
The same $1,000 invested in the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF, which tracks the S&amp;P 500 Index, would be worth $1,594.15 today, representing a gain of 59.4%.
XRP has traded between $0.3911 to $1.62 over the last year, with the yearly high hit in the last week. The 36% weekly gain for XRP is the second largest among the top 10 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, trailing only Cardano (+39%).
While XRP has seen a sharp rise in the last week, the cryptocurrency remains well off of its all-time high of $3.84, which was set in January 2018.

When the Mayflower set sail in 1620, carrying Pilgrims across the Atlantic, it relied on hemp, a material essential for survival and symbolic of resilience. <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/hemp">Hemp's strength</a>, durability and water resistance made it crucial for crafting the ship&#8217;s sails, ropes and rigging, ensuring the ship could withstand the journey. 
The Pilgrims, English settlers who established Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts, brought knowledge of hemp cultivation from Europe, but their immediate focus was survival. It wasn't until the English government began encouraging hemp farming that its true importance was realized. As Ernest Abel (1980) notes, in 1611, King James I ordered hemp cultivation in Jamestown, Virginia, aiming to reduce reliance on imports. Over time, hemp became a critical crop for the colonies.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Hemp And Seeds Of Rebellion</h3>
As colonial America grew, hemp shifted from a practical crop to a symbol of resistance against British economic control. The Wool Act of 1699 banned exports of colonial wool and textiles, forcing reliance on British imports. Hemp offered a vital alternative, allowing colonists to secure materials and defy <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/uk-cannabis">British trade</a> restrictions.
During the political unrest following the Stamp Act of 1765, the symbolic power of hemp grew. Families across the colonies began producing their textiles, including osnaburgs &#8211; a coarse linen made from hemp and flax. These homespun fabrics kept colonists warm during harsh winters and represented an act of rebellion against British control over colonial economies. 
George Washington himself championed the crop, producing over 1,300 yards of hemp and flax fabric annually at Mount Vernon by 1767. Soon, America's first innovators expanded hemp's use beyond textiles. It became legal tender in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/virginia-cannabis">Virginia </a>(1682), <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/maryland-cannabis">Maryland </a>(1683) and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/pennsylvania-cannabis">Pennsylvania</a> (1706), strengthening local economies and reducing reliance on British currency.
In the northern colonies, where hemp was in high demand for shipbuilding, merchants purchased every available fiber. This material &#8211; essential for crafting ropes, sails and fishing nets &#8211; became the lifeblood of New England's maritime industries.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Hemp In Maritime And Industrial Expansion</h3>
Ropewalks, factories dedicated to twisting <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/hemp">hemp fibers</a> into ropes were first established in Salem in 1635 and later in Boston by 1642, when English rope maker John Harrison introduced advanced techniques. 
Early ropewalks were simple open fields with posts for twisting fibers, but they evolved into enclosed factories powered by steam engines. By the time of the American Revolution, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/massachusetts-cannabis">Boston</a> alone had 14 ropewalks, underscoring hemp's critical role in the colonies' economic infrastructure.
Despite its importance, hemp production often lagged behind demand due to its labor-intensive cultivation and processing requirements. Both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, advocates of hemp farming, struggled to make it a profitable venture. The shortages of hemp fiber, especially in New England, highlighted the challenges of scaling production to meet industrial needs.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Centuries Later, Hemp Is Regulated Then Later Banned</h3>
By 1937, hemp was heavily regulated in the U.S. under the Marihuana Tax Act, making it difficult for farmers to produce. During World War II, the U.S. faced a significant decline in domestic hemp production due to the loss of foreign sources, such as the Philippines, which were under Japanese control. 
In response, the U.S. government initiated the War Hemp Program to ramp up domestic cultivation for <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/biotech/24/02/37271000/u-s-army-invests-1-9m-to-develop-hemp-manufactured-buildings-for-military-operations">military and industrial needs</a>. This program successfully increased hemp acreage to supply the materials necessary for the war effort, including ropes, uniforms and parachutes.
Hemp was then prohibited by the Controlled Substances Act of 1970, which classified it as a Schedule I controlled substance. This classification remained in place until the 2018 Farm Bill, which<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cannabis/24/10/41406637/top-5-cannabis-legalization-missteps-in-recent-u-s-history-a-selection"> legalized hemp </a>cultivation once again.
