Chip stocks got a boost from Taiwan Semiconductor's upbeat quarterly results Thursday, thanks to the AI frenzy.
The contract chipmaker reported <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/asia/24/07/39832197/apple-nvidia-supplier-tsmc-reports-strong-q2-results-amid-booming-demand-for-ai-chips-guides-q3-abov" rel="noreferrer noopener">second-quarter revenue</a> of $20.82 billion, implying a growth of 40.1% year-over-year, quashing the analyst consensus estimate of $20.23 billion.&nbsp;
Sequentially, the revenue grew by 13.6%, backed by strong demand for 3-nanometer and 5-nm technologies.
The high-performance computing and smartphone end markets accounted for 52% and 33% of net revenue, respectively. The company expects supply constraints to ease by 2025 and 2026.
Taiwan Semiconductor expects third-quarter revenue of $22.4 billion—$23.3 billion versus a consensus of $22.7 billion. EPS of $1.48 beat the analyst consensus estimate of $1.41.

What's Going On With Nvidia And AMD Stocks On Thursday?

Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) shares are trading higher today after the Austin, Texas-based company inked a contract with Intersect Power.
The agreement is for 15.3 GWh of Megapacks, to be used for solar and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/solar">storage projects through 2030</a>.
The agreement makes Intersect Power one of the largest Megapack operators globally, with nearly 10 GWh expected by the end of 2027.
Tesla has previously supplied Megapacks for Intersect Power&#8217;s Base Portfolio, totaling 2.4 GWh.
By 2027, over half of the new Megapack order will be used for four projects in California and Texas, including some of the largest battery installations in the U.S.
The rest will support Intersect Power&#8217;s projects coming online between 2028 and 2030.

The Megapacks for Intersect Power projects are set for delivery in 2025 and 2026, and will be produced at Tesla's Megafactory in Lathrop, California.
Mike Snyder, Senior Director of Tesla Energy said, "This partnership is the foundation of one of the largest and fastest growing storage portfolios in the country here at Intersect Power.&#8221;
&#8220;This storage franchise is the perfect complement to our multi-billion dollar expansion of renewable generation that is expected to more than triple the size of our company over the next three years."

Conducting business in Africa is usually not a simple endeavor. And, while it is true that each country and each region&rsquo;s economy is very different from the next, a few things can be said about the continent as a whole and the challenges of conducting business there.
Wondering what these difficulties are, Benzinga reached out to one of Morocco&rsquo;s top businessmen, <a href="http://benzinga.com/topic/saad-bendidi">Sa&acirc;d Bendidi</a>, who serves as the general manager at the Saham Group, one of the largest companies in Africa with presence in 57 percent of the countries there and boasting more than 14,000 employees and over $1.2 billion in annual revenue.
<h3>Attracting The Right People</h3>
&ldquo;Today one of the challenges is to attract the right people,&rdquo; Bendidi explained. &ldquo;We are facing global competition for the talent, so we need to have the right arguments to retain the best people.&rdquo;

On the flip side, he continued, &ldquo;When I look at my experience as a manager for the last 25 years in Morocco and in the region, I would say we can do more, we can move quite quickly [<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/17/02/9062749/expert-talks-business-and-natural-resources-in-morocco-africa-growth-is-still-ahe">in terms of economic growth</a>].&rdquo;
<h3>Moving Faster Than The First World</h3>
&ldquo;From time to time, I talk with some friends in Europe, [and] during the last five years, I came to the conclusion that I was afraid to go to Europe because people were just speaking about crisis, crisis, crisis&hellip; How come?
&ldquo;When I look at this from my perspective: Maybe we are not as rich a country, but the prospects of growth, of creating wealth, of improving things are so great &mdash; from a certain perspective, it is maybe easier as we are more enthusiastic to do business in our region than in some mature markets and old countries,&rdquo; he stated.
<h3>Remaining Optimistic</h3>
Bendidi then brought up an interesting international survey that has always amazed him. The study measures where people are enthusiastic about the future and where they feel pessimistic about it.
&ldquo;The first country in the world where people are optimistic is Nigeria,&rdquo; he noted. &ldquo;You can hardly believe that it is Nigeria; life is a struggle, everything is difficult. However, people look at the future with a positive outlook.&rdquo;

&ldquo;In some other countries where people are rich, maybe 20 times more than the average in an African country, people&rsquo;s prospect is one of flat or declining revenue, less happiness in the future&hellip; and that makes them maybe more pessimistic, despite the fact they have a very decent standard of living,&rdquo; he added.
&ldquo;Here in North Africa generally we are quite open [...] This is something &mdash; I think, a unique asset that we have in the region. I think this is a thing that has been built since the beginning. Being always open to the others gives us a lot of strength, maybe not in the balance sheet, but we can do something with it,&rdquo; he ended.

Africa is a very diverse continent, and so are its countries&rsquo; economies. However, they have one thing in common: <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/17/02/9062749/expert-talks-business-and-natural-resources-in-morocco-africa-growth-is-still-ahe">growth is still ahead of them</a>.
Another interesting thing to notice is that companies there serve millions of customers, largely due to the fact that penetration of U.S.-based companies is not as extensive as in other areas of the world. However, just a very small portion of these corporations trade on major stock exchanges like the NYSE or the Nasdaq.
Besides a few South African, Nigerian and Zambian stocks, there isn&rsquo;t much African presence in Wall Street. There&rsquo;s Sasol Limited (ADR) (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/SSL#NYSE">SSL</a>), AngloGold Ashanti Limited (ADR) (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/AU#NYSE">AU</a>), Gold Fields Limited (ADR) (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/GFI#NYSE">GFI</a>), Sibanye Gold Ltd (ADR) (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/SBGL#NYSE">SBGL</a>), Net 1 UEPS Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/UEPS#NASDAQ">UEPS</a>) and about 35 more companies. So, quite few considering that that there are 54 countries and more than 1.2 billion people in Africa.
Intrigued by this absence of African companies on Wall Street, Benzinga reached out to one of Morocco&rsquo;s top businessmen, <a href="http://benzinga.com/topic/saad-bendidi">Sa&acirc;d Bendidi</a>. Benidi is the general manager at the Saham Group, one of the largest companies in Africa, present in 57 percent of the countries there, with more than 14,000 employees and over $1.2 billion in annual revenue.

<h3>An Informed Opinion</h3>
Benzinga: We were looking into Forbes&rsquo; Top 100 Companies in The Arab World 2016 list and noticed that a few Moroccan companies (BMCE Bank, Banque Centrale Populaire and Attijariwafa Bank) were included. However, none of these mid-caps are listed on major stock exchanges. Why is that?
Bendidi: Let me take an example I know, the Saham Group. Saham is not a traded company; we have sustained our development by our own resources or with some partners, so we don&rsquo;t need any money from the market for the time being. Maybe one day we will need it to sustain our growth, but for the time being [...] we have access to all the money we need in a very smooth way, so we didn&rsquo;t even list our companies in the domestic markets. This is the case for Saham, but it might also be the case for others.
The second thing is that, if we wanted to go to a major market, these markets would need to assess the risk the same way that we assess it. I can tell you, for example, if we invest in Nigeria, some people would argue it&rsquo;s an awful move &mdash; you have a lot of constraints, very low oil prices, devaluation of the currency, and so on. So, the Saham Group would trade at a discount.
However, our risk assessment is different. We are focused on spreading across Africa; diversification is a strength. In addition, we have a lot of money and we are dealing in a lot of money, so we try to mitigate the risk on that.
So, if you look at this with the eyes of Wall Street, [our investments would look] quite small and very complicated. So, people would apply a discount to our stock. Nonetheless, investors that have the right analysis, and that are close to the continent and to the businesses, are evaluating our business differently. So, we do prefer to work (and we have worked) with some large private equity funds that are knowledgeable about the region or the businesses, so that we can reach harmony on the evaluations, on what is the value of the business, the value creation, and the risk assessment.
Basically, this is the difference of perspective that we may have with the markets where people are looking at things from a top-down perspective rather than making a bottom-up analysis that is more complicated.
