After stellar <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/02/43900955/berkshire-hathaways-q4-profits-soar-71-warren-buffett-says-his-firm-has-paid-more-taxes-than-tech-titans-in-trillions">fourth-quarter</a> earnings, Warren Buffett, in his letter to shareholders revealed that Berkshire Hathaway Inc.&#8217;s (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BRK#NYSE">BRK</a>) (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BRK#NYSE">BRK</a>) performance exceeded his expectations. However, another important takeaway from his letter was Berkshire&#8217;s increasing investments in Japan.
What Happened: Terming it as a &#8220;small but important exception&#8221; to Berkshire&#8217;s U.S.-based focus, Buffett highlighted the company&#8217;s growing investment in Japan.
Operationally similar to Berkshire, these Japanese companies own interests in a vast array of businesses, many based in Japan but others that operate throughout the world.
Buffett shared in his letter that Berkshire began purchasing shares in these five companies for almost six years, with the first one made in July 2019.
These companies include ITOCHU, Marubeni, Mitsubishi, Mitsui, and Sumitomo.
&#8220;We simply looked at their financial records and were amazed at the low prices of their stocks. As the years have passed, our admiration for these companies has consistently grown,&#8221; said Buffett.
These five companies demonstrate shareholder-friendly practices, according to Buffett. They increase dividends when appropriate, repurchase shares when advantageous, and maintain executive compensation programs that are significantly less excessive than those of their U.S. counterparts.

Why It Matters: Stating that &#8220;it won't be long before Greg Abel replaces me as CEO and will be writing the annual letter,&#8221; Buffett added that both of them like these Japanese companies&#8217; capital deployment strategy, management, and attitude for their investors.
Additionally, Buffett said that he was committed to long-term investments in these companies, supporting their boards and keeping holdings below 10% of each company&#8217;s shares. However, with Berkshire approaching this limit, the five companies have agreed to relax the ceiling, allowing Berkshire to further increase its ownership.
Berkshire <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/02/43900955/berkshire-hathaways-q4-profits-soar-71-warren-buffett-says-his-firm-has-paid-more-taxes-than-tech-titans-in-trillions">reported</a> a 71% increase in operating earnings to $14.5 billion for the fourth quarter. Whereas, its cash reserves increased to a record $334.2 billion at the end of 2024, marking the 10th consecutive quarter of growth.
Price Action: Berkshire&#8217;s class B shares fell 0.64% on Friday, logging in a growth of 6.13% in 2025 and 17.01% over last year.
The SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) and Invesco QQQ Trust ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), which track the S&amp;P 500 index and Nasdaq 100 index, respectively, fell on Friday. What Happened: The Tesla website shows 6 job listings in the manufacturing category for the Cybercab. The company is looking to hire maintenance technicians, a tool and die specialist, a launch equipment engineer, and a process engineer. All the jobs are based out of Austin, Texas.
Tesla unveiled a<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/10/41284847/tesla-reveals-two-seater-cybercab-that-drives-itself" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">&nbsp;Cybercab with no steering wheels or pedals</a>&nbsp;in October at an event in Los Angeles. The two-seat vehicle is meant for autonomous driving alone and is slated to start production in 2026 and join the company's <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/02/43620349/tesla-still-on-track-to-launch-autonomous-ride-hailing-in-austin-by-june-says-elon-musk">robotaxi fleet</a>, which, until then, will be composed of the company's Model 3 and Y vehicles.
Why It Matters: The Cybercab is an integral part of Tesla CEO Elon Musk&#8217;s push towards autonomous driving. The CEO is optimistic that the company&#8217;s full self-driving (FSD) driver assistance technology will enable autonomous driving in time. The software is currently in the development phase and requires active driver supervision.
Musk in October said that the Cybercab will not include a charging plug – it will instead use inductive charging. The vehicle, he then said, will be priced under $30,000. 
Tesla in January also said that preparations are underway across its existing factories for the launch of new products including more affordable models. The start of production of new models is slated for the first half of 2025.

Kosmos Energy 2025 Guidance: Expects Production Of 70,000–80,000 Boe Per Day, Operating Expenses Of $18–$20 Per Boe, And Capital Expenditures Under $400M

President Donald Trump issued written orders to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) to curb Chinese investments in strategic sectors, marking a significant escalation in the administration&#8217;s economic measures against China.
What Happened: The White House memorandum, titled the &#8220;America First Investment Policy,&#8221; affirms the U.S.&#8217;s openness to foreign investment while directing CFIUS to impose restrictions on Chinese investments in key sectors such as technology, critical infrastructure, healthcare, agriculture, energy, and raw materials. It also proposes new regulations to prevent foreign adversaries like China from exploiting capital, technology, and intellectual resources.
Referring to the People&#8217;s Republic of China (PRC), the memorandum states, &#8220;The PRC does not allow United States companies to take over their critical infrastructure, and the United States should not allow the PRC to take over United States critical infrastructure.&#8221;
The Trump administration is also considering implementing new or stricter restrictions on outbound investments to Beijing in industries such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, quantum technology, biotechnology, and aerospace. The directive seeks to protect US investors by auditing foreign companies listed on US exchanges and preventing companies from foreign adversaries from receiving pension plan contributions.
While the directive primarily targets China, it also aims to encourage investment from allied trading partners by establishing a &#8220;fast-track&#8221; process for facilitating projects.&nbsp;The memo also mentions that the U.S. will fast-track environmental reviews for investments exceeding $1 billion.
In response, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, on Saturday, stated that this directive will significantly disrupt regular economic and trade collaboration between Chinese and U.S. businesses, reported China Daily.
