Jeff Bezos, founder of tech giant Amazon, has amassed enormous wealth over the last few decades, with figures relating to his personal fortune astounding people from time to time.
What happened: In one such instance from July 2020, Bezos' wealth swelled to $171 billion, according to a Bloomberg <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-07-01/bezos-s-wealth-soars-to-171-6-billion-to-top-pre-divorce-record">report</a>, which at the time was more than the total value of all Bitcoins (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) in circulation at roughly $170 billion.
Given that Bitcoin was and remains the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, this was an extraordinary feat.

In about a month&#8217;s time, the asset&#8217;s valuation topped $208 billion, beating Bezos&#8217; net worth. The rest, as they say, is history.
The leading cryptocurrency witnessed a massive bullish cycle in 2021, catapulting its valuation past a trillion dollars. While the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/22/06/27865919/2022-is-the-worst-bear-market-in-crypto-history-shows-on-chain-data">subsequent bear market</a> caused a hiccup, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/24/12/42336184/exclusive-bitcoin-crossing-100000-is-a-defining-moment-experts-say">animal spirits returned in 2024</a>, with Bitcoin reaching roughly $2 trillion in market value.
On the other hand, Bezos' wealth dipped to $171 billion in 2022 and further to $114 billion by 2023, per Forbes. And, while his wealth has rebounded to about $244 billion as of this writing, it is still a fraction of Bitcoin.

In recent years, travelers have faced many extra fees when flying, like fees for checked bags, picking seats or even getting a little extra legroom. Now, lawmakers have made it clear they&#8217;re tired of this. During a heated Senate hearing, senators questioned airline executives about these &#8220;exploitative&#8221; fees that anger customers and drive them to spend more money.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Mountain of Fees </h2>
The Senate investigation uncovered a staggering <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/startups/24/11/42246108/in-5-years-airlines-made-12-4-billion-from-seating-fees-alone-senate-and-biden-admin-say-these-junk-fees-must-stop">$12.4 billion in revenue</a> that five major airlines – American, Delta, United, Frontier and Spirit – pulled in from seating fees between 2018 and 2023. Passengers have been annoyed by these surcharges, which have led to increased expenses and confusion while making travel arrangements. &#8220;Airlines these days view their customers as little more than walking piggy banks to be shaken down for every possible dime,&#8221; said Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat, without holding back.

Blumenthal, who chairs the Senate&#8217;s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, shared that airlines aren't just adding fees – they're targeting individual passengers based on what they think they're willing to pay. These so-called &#8220;junk fees&#8221; include extra charges just for selecting a standard seat, whether by the aisle, window or even for a bit of extra comfort.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">No Transparency, No Limits</h2>
Senators argued that these fees aren't based on any real cost to the airline. The Senate report found that airlines couldn't explain the real expenses behind these charges. Blumenthal noted that the prices aren't based on the service provided but are another way to bump up revenues.
Republican Sen. Josh Hawley joined in, harshly criticizing how airlines charge different baggage fees, even when people are on the same flight. "This is Russian roulette," Hawley said. "Nobody enjoys flying on your airlines. It&#8217;s a disaster. … It's absolutely terrible." He said that these fees make flying an increasingly miserable experience for most travelers.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Executives Defend Themselves</h2>
Executives from the airlines attempted to defend their methods by claiming that these fees provide flexibility. Delta&#8217;s executive Peter Carter said the company provides "options and value for every customer." At the same time, Stephen Johnson of American Airlines insisted they need to "appeal to the most budget-conscious customers." However, it did not sit well with the senators, who persisted in asking the executives why the fees were so inconsistent and why they kept going up.
The report also showed how budget airlines like Frontier (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ULCC#NASDAQ">ULCC</a>) and Spirit (OTCPK: SAVEQ) have been paying gate agents bonuses to strictly enforce baggage rules. Between 2022 and 2023, these airlines <a href="https://www.hsgac.senate.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024.11.25-Majority-Staff-Report-The-Skys-the-Limit-The-Rise-of-Junk-Fees-in-American-Travel-1.pdf">paid </a>gate agents $26 million in bonuses for catching passengers with too-big bags. This often forced passengers to pay extra fees or even miss their flights. Frontier&#8217;s CEO, Barry Biffle, tried to justify it a day before by saying, "These are shoplifters. These are people that are stealing," referring to passengers trying to avoid bag fees.&nbsp;

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Biden Administration Steps in</h2>
The Biden administration is also resisting these practices. President Biden <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/speeches-remarks/2024/03/05/remarks-by-president-biden-and-members-of-the-competition-council-announcing-new-actions-to-lower-costs-for-hardworking-families-by-fighting-corporate-rip-offs/">has stated</a> that families shouldn&#8217;t have to pay more simply to sit together as part of a larger fight against unjust &#8220;junk fees&#8221; in sectors including banking, hotels and, as of late, airliners. This push aims to make flying less of a headache and a bit more fair, especially for families hit hardest by these extra costs.
Blumenthal said his committee plans two more aviation-related reports before the end of the year. One key focus will be transparency – something the senators argued is sorely lacking in the current setup. "You charge people fees they know nothing about," said Hawley. "You harass them to death."

TAT Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TATT#NASDAQ">TATT</a>) has announced the signing of a five-year maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) agreement with a North American cargo carrier. The total contract value throughout the agreement is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/42450920" rel="noreferrer noopener">estimated at approximately&nbsp;$17 million.</a>
Under this deal, TAT will provide services for the auxiliary power units (APUs) of the carrier&#8217;s Boeing Company 757 and 767 aircraft.
Igal Zamir, President and CEO of TAT, emphasized the significance of this contract, noting it strengthens TAT&#8217;s position as a leader in the APU cargo carrier market.
In a press release, Zamir also highlighted the company&#8217;s best-in-class repair capabilities, competitive cost structure, and high level of customer service.
This agreement adds to the existing MRO contracts TAT holds with major cargo carriers in North America, further solidifying its market presence.

In its recently reported third-quarter earnings for 2024, TAT Technologies reported a 35.2% increase in revenue, reaching $40.5 million compared to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/11/n42052224/tat-technologies-grows-revenue-by-35-increases-net-income-by-33-and-adjusted-ebitda-by-70-for-the-" rel="noreferrer noopener">$29.9 million in the year-ago period.</a>
Year-to-date revenue grew by 36%, amounting to $111.1 million, up from $82.0 million last year.
Gross profit also saw a strong increase of 45.9%, totaling $8.5 million in the third quarter, representing 21% of revenues, compared to $5.8 million (19.4% of revenues) in the same period last year.
In November, Zamir noted that demand for TAT&#8217;s products and services continues to grow, with the company&#8217;s order and long-term agreement (LTA) backlog now at $423 million.
Despite challenges in the supply of parts for APUs and landing gears, TAT is ramping up inventory to better support customer needs.
Price Action: TATT shares are trading lower by 0.19% to $26.18 premarket at last check Thursday.

Brian Quintenz, a prominent figure in digital assets and former Republican commissioner of the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/24/11/42206456/trump-administration-to-reportedly-let-cftc-regulate-bitcoin-ethereum-spot-market-is-the-sec-set-to-lose-its-grip-over-crypto">Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC)</a>, is reportedly a frontrunner to lead the agency under President-elect Donald Trump.
What Happened: Quintenz, who currently heads policy for a16z Crypto, the digital asset division of Andreessen Horowitz, has been interviewed for the role, Bloomberg <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-12-12/andreessen-crypto-policy-lead-quintenz-in-running-for-cftc-chair?utm_source=telegram&amp;utm_content=crypto&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;embedded-checkout=true">reported</a>, quoting sources.
Both Quintenz and a spokesperson for a16z declined to comment, while the Trump transition team has yet to issue a statement.
If appointed, Quintenz would bring a unique perspective to the CFTC, blending his experience in traditional finance and digital assets. 
Prior to his tenure at the CFTC, he led Saeculum Capital Management, a hedge fund, and served on Capitol Hill. 
His work at a16z has included advocating for more accommodating regulatory policies in areas such as digital asset derivatives and event contracts, which allow retail traders to bet on various outcomes.
The CFTC is viewed by many in the crypto industry as a favorable regulator compared to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). 
Industry leaders have long called for clear guidelines on whether their offerings fall under the jurisdiction of the CFTC or SEC, as well as pathways for compliance.
Quintenz has previously voiced his thoughts on the intersection of crypto and regulation. 
In a November blog co-authored with other executives at Andreessen Horowitz, he wrote, "While we'll likely have greater flexibility to experiment, we can't forget that the fundamental regulatory principles applicable to blockchain systems remain unchanged.
There will still be valid scrutiny from regulators and policymakers of certain aspects of the industry irrespective of progress on new legislation or a recalibrated regulatory environment."
