There are no prizes for guessing that Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) and Super Micro Computer, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SMCI#NASDAQ">SMCI</a>) are part of the elite list but what could catch most by surprise is a non-tech company topping the list.
Leading S&amp;P 500 Leaderboard: Irving, Texas-based utility company Vistra Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VST#NYSE">VST</a>) has gained over 250% over the past year and is the best-performing S&amp;P 500 company in terms of returns.
Artificial Intelligence stalwart Nvidia, which is riding on the momentum set in motion by the technology, and AI server manufacturer Super Micro took the second and third positions, respectively, with gains of 239% and 203%, respectively.

The buoyancy continued this year. So far in 2024, Vistra, a relatively new addition to the S&amp;P 500 Index, added 138%, although underperforming Super Micro (+197%) and Nvidia (+159%).

Not Cramer&#8217;s Favorite: Despite its outperformance, Vistra has not cut ice with CNBC Mad Money host Jim Cramer. In the Lightning Round segment of his show on CNBC that was aired in mid-June, he said that <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/24/06/39355507/jim-cramer-says-hes-going-to-have-to-wait-on-sofi-but-recommends-this-great-little-indus">Vistra is a momentum stock.</a>
&#8220;Momentum stocks can't really withstand that kind of drop,&#8221; he said, referring to the pullback seen in the stock from a high of $107.24 reached on May 28.
That said, the stock picker does see some positives &#8220;I do think that it's the sweet spot of the energy, energy market,&#8221; he said, adding that he preferred Constellation Energy Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CEG#NYSE">CEG</a>) over Vistra.
A week later, while reviewing the S&amp;P 500 Index&#8217;s performance for the first half and stocks that contributed to the upside, Cramer was slightly more optimistic. Vistra&#8217;s upside was due to the enormous power requirement of all new data centers that are currently being built, he said.
He added that the company is unique as it has several nuclear power plants, which are currently the only way to get reliable clean energy at scale.
Outlook: Vistra is an integrated retail electricity and power generation company providing power to customers, businesses, and communities from California to Maine. This Fortune 500 company serves 20 states and the District of Columbia.
Vistra is also one of the largest competitive power generators in the U.S., with a capacity of approximately 37,000 megawatts powered by a diverse portfolio of natural gas, nuclear, solar, and battery energy storage facilities.
Vistra also owns and operates the 750-MW/3,000-MWh energy storage system in Moss Landing, California.
The company&#8217;s first-quarter results released in early May showed that ongoing operations adjusted EBITDA came in at $813 million, nearly 50% year-over-year improvement. As Cramer suggested, the data center opportunity could have an augmenting effect on the top line.
The average analysts&#8217; price target for Vistra, according to data compiled by TipRanks, is $108.17, and this suggests scope for about 18% upside.
The Texan company is a regular dividend payer, with the most recent quarterly dividend amounting to 21.75 cents.

Tesla Inc&#8217;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) expansion plans for its gigafactory in Germany have reportedly <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/05/38891146/teslas-german-factory-expansion-gets-local-councils-nod-despite-protests">received approval</a> from environmental authorities.
What Happened: The environmental authorities in the German state of Brandenburg, where Tesla&#8217;s gigafactory is located, have given the green light to the company&#8217;s expansion plans, Reuters reported. 
The approval allows Tesla to create an asphalted logistics area for new vehicles, stairwells on its pressing plant, and an access guard, the report said. 
The approval is key to the EV giant&#8217;s aim of doubling the plant's capacity for battery production to 100 gigawatt hours and car production to 1 million units annually.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/03/38001324/german-chancellor-olaf-scholz-calls-arson-attack-on-teslas-giga-berlin-a-terrorist-act-wants-ev-gian">came out in support</a> of Tesla&#8217;s Berlin gigafactory expansion earlier amid protests by environmentalists and local residents. He expressed his desire for Tesla to develop in Brandenburg in the same way Ford did in Cologne.
Why It Matters: Environmentalists and locals have voiced against the proposed expansion. In May, several protestors attempted to storm the company's factory and even injured several police officers in the ensuing clash. Several protestors were taken into police custody&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/05/38774207/elon-musk-says-tesla-was-the-only-car-company-attacked-after-16-protesters-were-taken-into-custody-i" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">over the incident</a>.
In March, an arson attack on the factory caused a power outage and halted production for about a week. Far-left activist organization&nbsp;Vulkan Group&nbsp;claimed the attack and said it was&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/03/37528386/tesla-senior-exec-fires-back-after-arson-attack-warns-of-green-capitalism-says-ev-giant-creates-most" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">spurred by environmental concerns.</a>
As per Tesla&#8217;s first quarter report, the German factory currently has an installed annual vehicle capacity of 375,000 Model Y vehicles in addition to millions of battery cells.

WASHINGTON — A nickel mining district in southeastern Canada may one day rival Indonesia as the world's largest producer of the battery metal, Canada Nickel Co.'s (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CNIKF#OTC">CNIKF</a>) CEO Mark Selby said this month <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/mining">at a mining conference.</a>



The company's Crawford project near Timmins, a mining town in eastern Ontario, is its flagship property, but it is actively exploring seven other resource targets in the area with a drilling program to last into the third quarter 2024.



"Within a year from now, we'll have seven different resources published," Selby told Benzinga on the sidelines of a Benchmark Mineral Intelligence battery metals conference last week.

Canada Nickel&#8217;s Crawford property contains 3.8 million metric tons of proven and probable nickel reserves, ranking it second among the biggest nickel mines in the world, behind one in Russia but ahead of three in Indonesia.



The catch is that the other mines are already in production, while Canada Nickel says Crawford won't be in production until the tail end of 2027.



Remaining hurdles include getting permits from the federal and provincial governments, but Selby said the company is expecting to have all of those by this time next year. Canada Nickel is backed by investments from Agnico Eagle Mines (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AEM#NYSE">AEM</a>), Samsung SDI (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SSDIY#OTC">SSDIY</a>) and Anglo American (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NGLOY#OTC">NGLOY</a>).



If Canada Nickel can pull it off, having such a large nickel mine in North America would go a long way toward fulfilling Western government ambitions to build a battery supply chain that isn't dependent on China, which dominates nickel mining and refining through its investments in Indonesia, the world's biggest nickel producer.



Nickel, which is used to make stainless steel, is also a key ingredient in batteries that run electric vehicles.



In 2023, Canada produced 132.4 thousand metric tons of the metal, well behind Indonesia's 1.7 million, according to GlobalData and U.S. Geological Survey data. And while Crawford is bigger than those three individual mines in Indonesia, those mines combined dwarf its reserves, with 7.7 million metric tons of nickel.



That means the Timmins area has a long way to go before it competes with Indonesia on size, but Canada Nickel isn't the only company exploring for the battery metal in the area.

The project boasts a massive resource, estimated at 2.46 billion tons grading 0.24% nickel, translating to a contained nickel resource of 13.3 billion pounds. A bankable feasibility study completed earlier pegged the project&#8217;s after-tax net present value (at an 8% discount rate) at $2.6 billion with an internal rate of return of 18.3%.



Over its projected 41-year lifespan, the mine is expected also to produce 52.9 million pounds of cobalt, 490,000 ounces of palladium and platinum combined, 58 million tons of iron, and 6.2 million pounds of chromium.



Utilizing conventional open-pit mining techniques, the project anticipates extracting 1,715 million tons of ore and 3,992 million tons of waste over a 33.5-year period. The mining operation will deploy a mixed fleet of equipment, including backhoe excavators, face shovels, and articulated trucks. Peak production is forecasted for year 11, with plans to integrate autonomous trucks and remotely operated shovels fully.



Crawford has attracted significant interest from major players in the mining and battery sectors. Agnico Eagle Mines (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AEM#NYSE">AEM</a>), Canada&#8217;s largest gold producer, holds a 12% stake in Canada Nickel. Additionally, South Korea&#8217;s Samsung SDI secured an investment deal in January, granting the battery maker the potential to earn an 8.7% stake in Canada Nickel along with rights to 10% of the project&#8217;s nickel-cobalt production over its lifespan.



Nickel&#8217;s essential role in electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy technologies continues to drive interest in projects like Crawford. Despite a significant underperformance in 2023, amid a slump in prices that caused <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/01/36646645/first-quantum-temporarily-halts-ravensthorpe-nickel-mine-operations-suspends-dividend">layoffs and mine closures</a>, projects like Crawford are far too significant for the long-term green energy transition.

Canada Nickel Ramps Up Ontario's Crawford Project: 'We Are Confidently Moving Into This Next Phase'

Canada Nickel (OTCQX:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CNIKF#OTCQX">CNIKF</a>) is <a href="https://canadanickel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/CNC-PR-NetZeroMetals-Joint-Announcement_VFF-003-8-Feb-24-1.pdf">raising</a> $1 billion to build a processing plant <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/canada">in Timmins, Ontario</a>. 



The company is also planning a stainless-steel and alloy production facility.



Per <a href="https://www.reuters.com/markets/commodities/canada-nickel-plans-raise-1-billion-nickel-processing-plant-2024-02-08/">Reuters</a>, the processing plant — slated to commence production in 2027 — aims to process 80,000 tons of nickel annually. This would make it North America&#8217;s largest facility of its kind. 



With nickel production predominantly concentrated in Asia, Canada Nickel envisions filling a crucial gap in the supply chain by providing cleaner and responsibly produced nickel from North America.



&#8220;The car companies and battery supply chain know that the amount of nickel needed in North America is going to double and triple over the next decade," CEO Mark Selby said in a prepared statement.



"These processing facilities will position the Timmins Nickel District and Canada at the forefront of the global transition to greener energy and materials," he added.

To fund this ambitious venture, Canada Nickel is engaging in discussions with key stakeholders. They include the Canadian government, the United States Department of Defense, and partners in the battery manufacturing sector.



Samsung SDI (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SSDIY#OTC">SSDIY</a>) and Agnico Eagle Mines (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AEM#NYSE">AEM</a>) are also Canada Nickel shareholders.



Meanwhile, the company is concurrently developing an open-pit mine in Ontario and aims to integrate the entire battery supply chain with the proposed processing facility.



"We have what the world needs right in our backyard to fuel the electric vehicle revolution," said Ontario Mining Minister George Pirie, while the project also received a blessing from Bruce Archibald, Chief of the Taykwa Tagamou Nation.



Canada Nickel can expect plenty of support as Canada strives to increase the production of critical metals. Recently, the government offered help to troubled producers like First Quantum Minerals (OTCPK: FQVLF) who are grappling with price slumps and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/01/36646645/first-quantum-temporarily-halts-ravensthorpe-nickel-mine-operations-suspends-dividend">mine closures</a>.



However, this plan comes <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/01/36737765/nickels-nosedive-40-yearly-drop-puts-miners-in-a-tight-spot">amidst challenging times</a> in the market. Nickel prices on the London Metal Exchange have experienced a sharp decline of over 40% in the past year, primarily due to an influx of supply from Indonesia and sluggish demand.



With a current market cap of around $150 million, Canada Nickel's plans might look overly ambitious. Yet, the market reacted positively to the news with the stock ending Thursday's session 2.92% higher, closing at CA$ 1.41.

Upcoming Green Energy and Precious Metals Investor Conference: What You Need to Know

The electric vehicle sector is set to explode over the next 10&nbsp;years and the U.S. is looking to create a supply chain with Canada.

What Happened: Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>), Talon Metals Corp. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/TLOFF#OTC">TLOFF</a>) and Livent Corp&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/LTHM#NYSE">LTHM</a>) were among 30 EV and battery manufacturers, in addition to&nbsp;mining companies, who met virtually with the U.S. Department of Commerce on Thursday, according to a <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-mining-canada-exclusive/exclusive-u-s-looks-to-canada-for-minerals-to-build-electric-vehicles-documents-idUSKBN2BA2AJ?edition-redirect=uk">report by Reuters</a>.&nbsp;The group discussed how to boost the production of Canadian battery materials. Canada currently mines 13 of the 35 minerals needed to produce EV batteries.

Why It Matters: Acquisitions have already begun. On Nov. 5, 2020, Livent, a lithium hydroxide supplier to Tesla, <a href="https://ir.livent.com/news/news-details/2020/Livent-Releases-Third-Quarter-2020-Results/default.aspx">announced</a> it had acquired the business and certain assets of Nemaska Lithium Inc., located in Quebec.

There are a number of other Canadian companies mining scarce battery minerals that U.S. companies could be looking to buy.

Gratomic Inc&nbsp;(OTC:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/CBULF#OTC">CBULF</a>), a Toronto-based graphite mining company, mines rare lump graphite at its Aukam Graphite Project,&nbsp;located in Namibia. The company <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/21/03/19922131/this-canadian-graphite-miner-could-be-gearing-up-for-a-huge-year">plans to become</a> the largest vein graphite producer in the world and to enter the EV battery supply chain.

Gratomic has a market cap of $69.82 million and trades at $1.15 a share.

Canada Silver Cobalt Works Inc (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/CCWOF#OTC">CCWOF</a>), based in Quebec, mines cobalt, silver, nickel and copper. The company announced on Feb. 16 it acquired 39,200 hectares, approximately 151 square miles, of property with deposits of minerals for EVs.

Canada Silver Cobalt has a market cap of $42.32 million and trades at 35 cents per share.

Neo Lithium Corp&nbsp;(OTC:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/NTTHF#OTC">NTTHF</a>), based in Quebec, owns a 3Q project in Argentina, which is one of the five largest lithium brine deposits in the world. On Jan. 19, Neo Lithium <a href="https://www.neolithium.ca/news-detail.php?id_news=66">announced</a>&nbsp;it had increased its lithium carbonate to a purity of 99.797%.

Neo Lithium has a market cap of $304.5 million and trades at $2.37 a share.

MegaWatt Lithium and Battery Metals Corp (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/WALRF#OTC">WALRF</a>), a British Columbia-based company mines a number of battery minerals including lithium and cobalt. Its largest lithium project, Route 381 Lithium, is located near the Nemaska Lithium Inc.&nbsp;mine and has produced promising lithium samples.

MegaWatt has a market cap of $3 million and trades at 35 cents a share.

Canadian Nickel Company Inc (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/CNIKF#OTC">CNIKF</a>), an Ontario mining company owns 100% of its Crawford mine. It is currently working to advance nickel-cobalt projects to the EV&nbsp;market.

Canadian Nickel has a market cap of $219.12 million and trades at $2.73 a share.

5 Canadian Mining Companies To Watch As US Looks North For EV Battery Minerals

The company <a href="https://www.news24.com/fin24/companies/mining/gold-producer-pan-african-resources-to-invest-r140m-in-solar-plant-for-mining-site-20201215" target="_blank">said that</a> the plant would cut carbon emissions of its Elikhulu tailing treatment plant by more than 26,000 tons in its first year.

Looking at the performance of the market, metals are a historically volatile industry. As of <a href="https://www.msci.com/documents/10199/fb6ddbdf-8df3-4fdf-96b4-e578e2ac776c" target="_blank">January 29, 2021</a>, the MSCI World Metals and Mining Index &mdash; composed of large and mid-cap stocks across 23 Developed Markets countries &mdash; is down 0.83% year-to-date. Although, the index rose 31.56% over the last year.&nbsp;

Gabriel Alonso-Mendoza, a Managing Partner at Amvest Capital, believes we are currently at the beginning of a new bull market in the Basic Materials Sector.&nbsp;

&ldquo;A lot of it has to do with the policy initiatives that are currently in place, which are stimulating the economy and creating demand for certain commodities,&rdquo; he said.&nbsp;
