Total sales and revenue were $16.215 billion, missing the consensus of&nbsp;$16.411 billion, and adjusted earnings of&nbsp;$5.14&nbsp;per share came&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/01/43335504/caterpillar-beats-q4-eps-estimates-but-revenue-disappoints-machinery-energy-transportation-segment-faces-pressure" rel="noreferrer noopener">above the consensus of&nbsp;$4.99</a>.
For 2025,&nbsp;sales are expected to decline ~1% due to unfavorable pricing, with a slight headwind in other income from&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance" rel="noreferrer noopener">lower interest income and currency effects</a>.
The analyst noted that adjusted EPS was better than expected, but underlying operating profit performance underwhelmed.
Feniger says that CAT is facing a pricing pullback after strong gains in favorable supply-demand conditions.
Construction pricing fell 4.6% in the fourth quarter (vs. -2.1% in the third quarter), with similar headwinds expected in the first quarter of 2025. The analyst adds that dealers reduced machine inventory by $1.6 billion in the fourth quarter, creating a headwind in the first half of FY25.
Feniger adjusted the estimates based on the softer 2025 guidance, with the EPS estimate cut to $19.25 from $21 for 2025 and $23 from $25 for 2026.
Oppenheimer analyst Kristen Owen maintained a Perform rating and says that although CI and RI demand remain challenges into 2025, the positive contribution from data centers is helping offset the impact on the EPS outlook and supporting valuation.

This is despite posting what appears to be an excellent earnings release.
If the shares continue to decline, there is a good chance they will find support around $182.25. This level has been important. It is why DECK is our Stock of the Day.
Decker's reported 3Q sales of $1.83 billion. Analysts were looking for $1.73 billion.
Earnings were also well ahead of estimates. They came in at $3 per share. The Street was looking for $2.56.
The company also forecast full-year earnings to be $5.75 to $5.80. This is well ahead of the prior outlook of $5.15 to $5.25.
So why are the shares down?
One reason could be possible concerns over the company's inventory buildup. It grew from $474,311,000 to $576,669,000. This is an increase of more than 20%.
Inventory increases can be a troubling sign for a retailer. Things that don't sell can end up in inventory. A company may have to eventually reduce the sale prices or take a writedown. This could be a bearish signal for the long term.

Regardless, if DECK drops to levels around $182.25, there is a chance the sell-off ends. A reversal and rally may even follow.
You can see on the chart that this price was resistance last June. Sometimes levels that had been resistance can turn into support and that could be the case here.

Many of the traders and investors who sold in June were happy they did so when the price dropped. But in November, the resistance was broken, and DECK moved higher.
When this happened, some of the previously happy sellers came to think their decision to sell had been a mistake. Many of these regretful sellers decide that they will repurchase their shares. But they will only do so if they can reacquire them for the same price they were sold.
As a result, if DECK gets to around $182.00 there will be remorseful sellers placing buy orders. If there are enough of them, the level that has been at a peak or resistance will convert into support.
This could put a floor under DECK. It could also be the first step of a new uptrend.

In line with Koontz&#8217;s preview, Viavi Solutions delivered <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/01/n43353084/viavi-announces-second-quarter-fiscal-2025-results" rel="noreferrer noopener">fiscal second-quarter 2025</a> revenue of $271 million (+6.4% Y/Y, +13.7% Q/Q), well above the $260 million consensus, while adjusted EPS of $0.13 beat the $0.10 consensus.
The adjusted gross margin of 61.1% (+110bps Y/Y, +200bps Q/Q) was above the 59.2% consensus, while the adjusted operating margin of 14.9% was above the 12.7% consensus.

Management highlighted firm orders from NA Service Providers for 5G field testing and NEMs for optical lab gear in the massive NE segment.
Management also noted strong demand for fiber sensing across broad global segments, including cloud data centers.
For SE (8% of revenue), results were lower than expected due to delays in SP adoption and soft by enterprise spending.
Optical Security and Performance Products sales (26% of revenue) were just below the low end of guidance and decreased -5.3% Y/Y.
Weakness was due to softer demand for 3D Sensing products. Fiscal third-quarter 2025 revenue of $276 million-$288 million was above consensus of $256 million (+10% at MP), while adjusted EPS of $0.10-$0.13 was ahead of consensus of $0.09.
The company expects an adjusted operating margin of 13%-15% versus 12.1% consensus.
Viavi Solutions expects fiscal third-quarter NSE revenue of $202 million-$212 million and adjusted operating margin of 6%-8%.
The guidance includes Inertial Labs&#8217; contribution of $50 million in annual RR, implying organic revenue +16% Y/Y and flattish Q/Q in a seasonally soft quarter.
In OSP, the company targets revenue of $74 million-$76 million (flat Y/Y) and an adjusted operating margin of 32%-34%.
Management highlighted the strong recovery for NSE across all products, for which visibility has markedly improved through the second half of fiscal 2025 but withheld commentary on fiscal 2026.
Key drivers included the resumption of 5G upgrades in NA to re-band spectrum from 4G to 5G, which is expected to continue through calendar 2025; new fiber broadband deployments gaining momentum through calendar 2025; and optical transport upgrades to 800G/1.6T, which are largely intended to support data center interconnect.
Koontz updated fiscal 2025 estimates and 2026 estimates. The analyst&#8217;s fiscal 2025 revenue and EPS estimates changed to $1.08 billion and $0.43 from $1.04 billion and $0.38. The fiscal 2026 estimates changed to $1.14 billion and $0.49 from $1.08 billion and $0.47
With evidence, the North American Service Provider recovery is well underway, and with the balance of its smaller verticals appearing past the bottom, Koontz upgraded Viavi Solutions&#8217; stock rating.
The analyst noted improving predictability and profitability in Viavi Solutions&#8217; results over the second half of calendar 2024, a far cry from its challenges, which began around two years ago.
In the fiscal second quarter of 2025, Viavi Solutions delivered revenue and EPS +4% and +$.03 above consensus. Its key NSE segment sales were well above guidance, benefitting from a meaningful recovery in SP and OEM spending on 5G and optical and the broad adoption of fiber sensing.
Koontz modestly raised his fiscal 2025 and 2026 estimates, reflecting steady organic growth and ample room for upside.

Assuming that Friday's session closes at $60, Tempus stock could potentially either rise to $81.17 or fall to $52.34 by the options chain expiring Feb. 28.
The problem is that market makers appear to be anticipating high volatility for that expiration date. Therefore, the condors available are unfavorable. Instead, it may be more prudent to consider the options chain expiring one week earlier on Feb. 21.
Again, from the limited data available, it's possible that Tempus stock could rise to $80.63 or fall to $52.36 for that cycle. The most aggressive (but arguably still rational) idea is the 55P &#x7C; 60P &#x7C;&#x7C; 75C &#x7C; 80C long iron condor for the Feb. 21 expiration date. This transaction combines the 55/60 bear put spread and the 75/80 bull call spread, allowing traders to win by an extreme movement in either direction.

An American Airlines (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAL#NASDAQ">AAL</a>) plane and an Army helicopter&#8217;s mid-air collision near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport has authorities looking for answers as President Donald Trump lashes out at DEI policies as<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/travel/25/01/43354408/trump-comments-on-american-airlines-crash-heres-what-we-know-what-he-suggests-is-to-blame"> an early scapegoat.</a>
What Happened: The Wednesday night crash led to the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/travel/25/01/43343648/all-60-passengers-4-crew-members-onboard-american-airlines-jet-feared-dead-after-midair-collision-official-says">death of 67 people </a>aboard the two aircraft after which the search and rescue mission quickly turned into a recovery mission.
A total of 41 bodies have been recovered from the wreckage along with black boxes from the plane. Officials continue to look for the black box aboard the Army helicopter, <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/live-blog/dc-plane-crash-live-updates-rcna190079">reported</a> NBC News.
American Airlines announced Friday that flight number 5342 will be retired and renamed as flight number 5677. Changing flight numbers after accidents is a common practice for the industry.
The Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is operating as normal on Friday after facing closures following the accident.
Wednesday's plane crash is the deadliest aviation incident in the United States in 23 years.

What Could Investigation Find?: The investigation, which is being led by the National Transportation Safety Board, is in the early stages and preliminary findings from the black boxes could take around 30 days to be made public.
Early reports in the investigation from the Federal Aviation Administration point to one air traffic controller being left to do the jobs of two people, the New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/31/business/dc-plane-helicopter-crash-cause.html">reported</a>.
The airport often has one air traffic controller handling air traffic and one handling helicopters. On some nights after 9:30 p.m. when traffic is lower, one person handles both duties. The report said on Wednesday one traffic controller was allowed to leave before 9:30 leaving one person in charge of both duties earlier than normal.
The FAA investigation said this was "not normal for the time of day and volume of traffic."
Audio recordings hear the traffic controller asking the helicopter to stay away from the flight path of the plane.
The helicopter also allegedly flew outside its approved flight plan and the airplane was told to land at a different runway than originally planned, adding additional complications to landing at the airport.
Another item factoring into the investigation is a shortage of air traffic controllers at the airport with some employees working six days a week and 10 hours a day, which may lead to fatigue and impact the ability to do their jobs.
An FAA spokesperson said the airport had 25 certified air traffic controllers out of a goal of 28. Reports show there were 19 controllers back in September 2023 with the union asking for 30.
The plane crash and investigation follows changes made at several key government agencies in recent days. On Jan. 21, Trump fired the heads of the Coast Guard and Transportation Security Administration and eliminated the Aviation Security Advisory Committee.
Former Federal Aviation Administration leader Michael Whitaker resigned from his position on Jan. 20, a move that came months after Trump-ally Elon Musk demanded he quit his position.
Helicopter traffic around the airport has been an ongoing concern flagged by pilots before and could factor into the investigation and lead to changes.
On Tuesday, another flight set to land at Reagan Washington National Airport had to go around due to helicopter traffic, NBC News reported. &nbsp;
A <a href="https://www.nbcchicago.com/investigations/records-show-pilots-complained-for-20-years-about-near-misses-at-dc-airport/3661183/">review </a>of complaints by NBC 5 found at least 16 complaints since 2006 of pilots having close calls with helicopters or other airplanes when trying to land at the airport.
Included in the complaints is one from April 2024 where a pilot said he did not see a helicopter 300 feet below his aircraft and received no warning from air traffic control.
Trump's Blame Game: Trump has suggested in the days following the accident that diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies "could have been" a cause of the plane crash.  
When asked about coming to the conclusion that DEI was to blame and providing evidence, Trump snapped back at a reporter.
"Because I have common sense. OK? And unfortunately, a lot of people don't. We want brilliant people doing this," Trump said. &nbsp;
Also supporting Trump's public blaming DEI for the deadly accident was billionaire Elon Musk, who owns the X social media platform.
Musk <a href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1885089037112791069">shared </a>multiple posts from people suggesting DEI factored into the equation or could be a reason why the aircrafts collided. Musk also shared a New York Post article about the FAA pushing for diversity in hiring.
"Under the Biden administration, the FAA and other government agencies had absolutely insane hiring practices that endangered the public. President @realDonaldTrump and his team are working rapidly to restore competent personnel to all positions involving your safety," Musk tweeted.
Reporters asked White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt about Trump's remarks during a press briefing Friday.
"Given DEI hires, it's not safe to fly commercially, is it?" Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy <a href="https://x.com/atrupar/status/1885391686924157358">asked</a>.
Leavitt said it is still safe, a comment that could contradict what Trump said the day before.
Doocy also <a href="https://x.com/atrupar/status/1885392023462490597">asked </a>if the air traffic controller in the DCA tower Wednesday was hired or not fired previously because of their race.

AAL Price Action: American Airlines stock is up 1% to $17.04 on Friday versus a 52-week trading range of $9.07 to $19.10. The stock dropped Thursday and is now trading nearly flat in 2024 with shares up 20% over the last year.
