During a discussion led by Paul McCaffery at the recent <a href="https://benzinga.swoogo.com/digital-assets/agenda-2024">Benzinga Future of Digital Assets</a> conference, panelists explored how these digital currencies reshape payment systems and force institutions to reevaluate their roles.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Global Payments System Undergoes a Shift</h3>
Jan van Eck, CEO of VanEck, highlighted the increasing use of stablecoins in payments and cross-border transactions. "The global payments system is being rewired as we speak," van Eck said, noting that stablecoin transaction volumes are "approaching twice that of Visa." This growth, he added, reflects stablecoins' efficiency and appeal, especially in countries with volatile currencies or limited access to traditional banking services.

While stablecoins promise efficiency and speed, integrating them into existing financial systems remains challenging. Van Eck cautioned about potential regulatory obstacles, stating, "The structural fight over crypto is between the banking, security, and commodity regulators." He expressed concerns that regulatory measures could hinder progress, mainly if influenced by banking interests.
Van Eck also pointed to the banking system's reliance on control as a key sticking point. "Jamie Dimon loves control. The banking regulators love control," he said, warning that restrictive policies could stifle stablecoin adoption. Despite these concerns, he predicted stablecoins would find their way into mainstream finance, particularly through collaboration with technology providers.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">A Demand For Change</h3>
As van Eck illustrated with a real-world example, institutional interest in stablecoins is already growing. "At a recent conference, an advisor asked me, ‘When will I be able to take stablecoins into my clients' accounts?'" he shared. This demand highlights how financial professionals see the potential for improving transaction efficiency.
Van Eck also noted stablecoins' potential to reduce settlement delays, pointing out inefficiencies in current systems. "On Veterans Day in the U.S., no one could send money to institutions," he said. "That world will be gone in three to five years."

The panelists agreed that stablecoins represent just the beginning of broader financial shifts. While regulatory clarity remains a challenge, the benefits of faster, more reliable transactions are undeniable. Quarterly sales of $2.89 billion missed the analyst consensus estimate of $2.899 billion.
Total sales increased 6%, driven by a blended same-restaurant sales increase of 2.4% and sales from the addition of 103&nbsp;Chuy&#8217;s restaurants <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/restaurants/24/12/42540835/darden-restaurants-visitor-growth-outpaces-industry-whats-ahead-for-q2-earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">and 39 net new restaurants</a>.

The company expects same-restaurant sales growth of around 1.5% (prior view 1.0%&nbsp;to&nbsp;2.0%). Additionally, Darden Restaurants now plans to open 50 to 55 new restaurants during the fiscal year.

Darden Restaurants Stock Gains After Q2 Earnings Beat Estimates, Sales Jump 6%

The U.S. economy expanded at an annualized real growth rate of 3.1% in the third quarter of 2024, exceeding the prior estimate of 2.8%, according to the official final <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s">reading released on Thursday. </a>
This marks the fastest pace of economic expansion since the fourth quarter of 2023 and signals a stronger-than-expected rebound in activity.
The upward revision was driven primarily by robust household spending and a larger increase in exports, although these gains were partially offset by a downward revision in private inventory investment. 
Compared to the second quarter, the acceleration in GDP was attributed to stronger consumer spending, exports, and federal government expenditures.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Consumer Spending Remains the Growth Engine</h3>
Real consumer spending, a key driver of the economy, increased at an annualized rate of 3.7% in third quarter, up from the 3.5% growth reported in the previous estimate. This marked a notable acceleration from the 2.8% rise in the second quarter and the fastest pace of private consumption growth since the first quarter of 2023.
Household spending accounted for a significant share of the GDP boost, reflecting continued resilience despite high borrowing costs and lingering inflationary pressures.
Corporate profits contracted by 0.4% during the third quarter, a revision from the flat growth reported earlier and a sharp reversal from the 3.5% increase seen in the second quarter. 
Inflation pressures, as measured by the GDP price index, rose 1.9%, consistent with earlier estimates but down from 2.5% in the second quarter. 
The Core Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index, a preferred measure of inflation for the Federal Reserve, increased at a 2.2% annualized rate, slightly above the 2.1% initially estimated but easing from 2.8% in the second quarter. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Labor Market Shows Continued Strength</h3>
In a separate report on Thursday, labor market data revealed a decline in unemployment claims, reinforcing the narrative of a strong labor market.
Initial jobless claims fell to 220,000 for the week ending Dec. 14, down from 242,000 the previous week and below expectations of 230,000. Continuing claims also edged lower, dropping from a revised 1.879 million to 1.874 million, defying projections of an increase to 1.89 million.
These figures indicate that the brief spike in claims observed in early December has not persisted, pointing to robust momentum in employment as 2024 draws to a close.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Market reactions</h3>
Risk sentiment rebounded during the premarket trading on Thursday, following the sharp selloff witnessed a day earlier amid a more hawkish than expected Federal Reserve meeting. 
Futures on major U.S. indices were in the green, with contracts on the S&amp;P 500 index rising by 0.8%. Similar gains were witnessed by the Nasdaq 100 and the Dow. On Wednesday the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) closed 3% lower, marking its worst session since September 2022.
The U.S. dollar index – Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>) – remained broadly steady for the day.
Meanwhile, Treasury yields continued their relentless climb, with yields on the 10-year benchmark surpassing 4.53%, hitting the highest levels since early May 2024.

On Wednesday, the company entered into an agreement to sell its Thermoformed and Flexibles Packaging business to TOPPAN Holdings Inc. for around $1.8 billion <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/12/g42565204/sonoco-completes-strategic-review-announces-agreement-to-sell-thermoformed-and-flexibles-packaging" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">on a cash-free and debt-free basis</a>.
The deal is at par with previously announced stratgeic review of Thermoformed &amp; Flexible Packaging business, which is a part of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/09/g40718122/sonoco-announces-review-of-strategic-alternatives-for-the-thermoformed-flexibles-packaging-busines" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sonoco&#8217;s Consumer Packaging segment</a>.
The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2025, subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals.
&#8220;The decision to sell our TFP business accelerates our portfolio simplification strategy, streamlines our organizational structure, and enables more focused capital investments in our remaining industrial paper and consumer packaging businesses,&#8221; said Howard Coker, Sonoco&#8217;s president and CEO.
Net proceeds from the transaction are expected to be used to repay existing debt.
As of Sept. 29, 2024, Sonoco <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/10/g41664004/sonoco-reports-third-quarter-2024-results" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">had total debt of $4.8 billion</a>.

What Happened: Woodside will transfer its 13% non-operated interest in the Wheatstone Project and its 65% operated interest in the Julimar-Brunello Project in Western Australia.
In return, Woodside will acquire Chevron&#8217;s 16.67% stakes in the North West Shelf Project and the NWS Oil Project, along with a 20% interest in the Angel Carbon Capture and Storage Project.
Additionally, Chevron will make a cash payment to Woodside of up to $400 million. This includes a $300 million payment at completion, and contingency payments of up to $100 million, tied to the handover of the Julimar Phase 3 Project and subsequent production performance.
Additionally, cashflows of around $400 million are forecasted from utilizing depreciable tax bases upon completion.
Chevron will also provide Woodside with a $100 million advance payment upon execution of the transaction, which is refundable by Woodside if the transaction is not complete.
The transaction is expected to close in 2026 since it is contingent upon the completion of the Julimar Phase 3 Project execution and handover.
Why It Matters: The Julimar Phase 3 Project is currently in the execution phase. Woodside will continue to manage it until the asset is transferred to Chevron at the project start-up.
Woodside CEO Meg O&#8217;Neill said, &#8220;This transaction simplifies our portfolio, improving our focus and efficiency by consolidating our position in our operated LNG assets. It is immediately cash flow accretive and includes a cash payment upon both execution and completion.&#8221;
&#8220;This year, the North West Shelf Project and its Karratha Gas Plant celebrated 40 years of operations. The Western Australian Government&#8217;s recent decision to extend the environmental approval for the North West Shelf Project supports its ongoing contribution to reliable energy supply for local and global customers.&#8221;
&#8221;This transaction creates greater opportunity to fill emerging processing capacity and maximise value accretive recovery from the North West Shelf Project.&#8221;
&#8220;Additionally, this improves joint venture planning for decarbonization opportunities at Karratha Gas Plant. Our increased equity in the Angel CCS Project also supports future development of this large-scale, multi-user carbon capture and storage hub in Western Australia.&#8221;
Price Action: Chevron shares rose 0.29% at $144.50, while WDS shares are up 1.53% at $14.60  premarket on Thursday.
