The United Kingdom faces a debt crisis, with soaring borrowing costs, rising deficits, and a shrinking tax base fueling concerns of a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/25/01/43314653/uk-faces-triple-threat-as-economic-uncertainty-hits">prolonged economic downturn</a>. Ray Dalio, a renowned founder of Bridgewater Associates, recently sounded the alarm, stating that the UK's rising debt costs and diminishing tax base could lead to a self-reinforcing cycle of economic decline.
"This looks like a debt death spiral in the making because it will either require more borrowing to service the debt that will have to be serviced, squeeze out other spending, or require more taxes," Dalio<a href="https://www.ft.com/content/deabeaac-db7c-46fe-a037-a75698a7e982"> told</a> the Financial Times.
As Dalio outlined in his latest book "How Countries Go Broke," this debt cycle follows a predictable pattern: rising interest rates lead to higher borrowing costs, which fuels more debt issuance, ultimately reaching a point where the country is forced into austerity or a monetary reset.
Reflecting on his book in an <a href="https://x.com/RayDalio/status/1878840018770210979?lang=en">X post</a>, Dalio, an astute student of history, pointed out the lack of understanding of the big picture.
"This dynamic is not widely understood because big, long-term debt cycles typically last about one lifetime—roughly 80 years (give or take 25 years)—so we don't get to learn about them through experience," he wrote.
The cost of UK government borrowing has surged in recent months, with yields on 10-year gilts hitting multi-decade highs. Since the UK's mini-budget crisis in 2022, confidence in British sovereign debt has remained fragile, exacerbated by the government's inability to rein in spending.
Dalio's framework identifies four stages of a debt crisis: the debt bubble, the top, the deleveraging, and the resolution. The UK appears to be in the early stages of the "top," where unsustainable debt growth meets tightening financial conditions. Dalio has called for the U.S. and UK to reduce their budget deficits to 3% of GDP, a target far from current levels. The U.S. deficit is expected to exceed 6% of GDP this year, while the UK's deficit is projected at 4.5%.
The warning signs about the UK's debt crisis are not new. Alex Krainer, portfolio manager and founder of Krainer Analytics, <a href="https://isystem-tf.com/2021/10/27/the-fall-of-global-britain-an-investment-hypothesis/">predicted in 2021</a> that the UK would face a severe economic reckoning. Krainer pointed to three key indicators: the collapse of the British pound, rising gilt yields, and continued gains in the FTSE 100 Index.
While the pound and gilts have experienced significant turmoil, Krainer argued that the FTSE 100 would keep rising as investors sought refuge in equities amid monetary debasement.
However, Krainer has been particularly critical of recent efforts to shift the <a href="https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/business/2024/11/19/cftc-chair-says-still-assessing-clearing-us-treasuries-abroad/">clearing of U.S. Treasury futures</a> to a London-based entity controlled by the Bank of England. In a recent <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bL8daFrsVZg">interview</a> for Commodity Culture, he laid out a case for funneling the trading collateral into sovereign debt, including UK gilts, to stabilize prices.
"This could unwittingly fund the British government, which is strapped for cash. This initiative reeks of desperation," Krainer explained.
For investors, the implications are clear: the UK's debt spiral represents both a risk and an opportunity, and the resolution could create the next billion-dollar trade, akin to George Soros' British pound short from 1992.
Still, nobody can certainly say when it will happen. As Dalio notes, "It's like a person who has a lot of plaque in their arteries that's building up fast. You can't tell exactly when it will cause a heart attack, but you know the risks are very high and rising." Read Next:

Greg Siokas, CEO of Cosmos Health, expressed confidence in the partnership, emphasizing how it will accelerate Cana&#8217;s growth.

Cosmos Health Pockets 10-Year Manufacturing Deal With Provident Pharmaceuticals

E.L.F. Beauty, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ELF#NYSE">ELF</a>) shares are trading lower on Friday after the company reported 2025 fiscal-year third-quarter earnings and issued <a href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/43546507">guidance below estimates</a>.
E.L.F. reported earnings after the market closed on Thursday, posting adjusted earnings per share of 74 cents, in line with analysts&#8217; estimate. In addition, the company reported sales of $355.32 million, beating analysts&#8217; estimate of $329.67 million and representing a 31% year-over-year increase.
E.LF. attributed the increase in sales to strength in both its retailer and e-commerce channels, in the U.S. and internationally. Furthermore, the company reported adjusted EBITDA of $68.7 million, representing a 16% year-over-year increase.
Soft guidance for the 2025 fiscal-year appears to be weighing on shares on Friday. The company sees adjusted earnings per share from $3.27 to $3.32, versus analysts&#8217; estimate of $3.54. Additionally, the company sees revenue from $1.30 billion to $1.31 billion, below analysts&#8217; estimate of $1.33 billion.

Analyst <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings/analyst/593fe7a785b07a00010be6c2/david-scharf">David Scharf</a> reiterated a Market Outperform rating, while raising the price target from $78 to $85.
Affirm Holdings reported its fiscal second-quarter revenues and earnings significantly ahead of expectations, Scharf said in a note. All the important KPIs were above estimates, he added.
The company reached positive GAAP operating income five months earlier than its "accelerated target that it unveiled just three months ago," the analyst stated. Affirm Holdings appears well positioned to "capitalize on the continued adoption of BNPL (buy now pay later) solutions for everyday purchases and benefits from a more robust loan platform relative to competitors," he further wrote.
RBC Capital Markets On Affirm Holdings
Analyst<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings/analyst/5880b6f377f9dd00011b0ab2/matthew-hedberg"> Daniel Perlin</a> reaffirmed a Sector Perform rating and price target of $67.
Affirm Holdings delivered "strong beats across the board," with GMV around 6% higher than Street expectations, Perlin said. Gain on the sale of loans came in "meaningfully higher," at around $58 million above RBC's estimate, he added.
The company reiterated that it expects to achieve GAAP operating income profitability in the fiscal fourth quarter, the analyst stated. Management guided to full-year GMV between $34.74 billion and $35.34 billion and revenue between $3.13 billion and $3.19 billion, Perlin said.

JPMorgan On Affirm Holdings
Analyst<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings/analyst/611bba00b4035700018b67b6/reginald-smith"> Reginald Smith</a> maintained an Overweight rating and price target of $74.
Affirm Holdings recorded GMV (gross merchandise value) and revenue growth of 35% and 47% year-on-year, respectively, both exceeding expectations, Smith said. Management's fiscal third-quarter guidance for GMV and revenue came in-line with consensus, he added.
The company raised its GMV and revenue guidance for the full year by more than the quarterly beat, the analyst stated. "Affirm is firing on all cylinders, delivering premium growth, improving profitability and consistent credit performance." 
Needham On Affirm Holdings
Analyst<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings/analyst/5f22a54029cf490001b01b94/kyle-peterson"> Kyle Peterson</a> reaffirmed a Hold rating on the stock.
Affirm Holdings reported GMV of $10.1 billion, beating consensus of $9.6 billion, and revenue of $866.4 million, surpassing estimate of $807.2 million, Patterson said. The beat was driven mainly by "stronger network revenue and higher gain on sale income." 
Both credit costs and SG&amp;A remained "relatively lean," the analyst stated. Affirm Holdings provided strong guidance for the fiscal third and fourth quarters, reflecting "good execution and ongoing improvement in profitability," Peterson further wrote.
AFRM Price Action: Shares of Affirm Holdings had risen by 19.56% to $73.83 at the time of publication on Friday midday.
