A 3D Solution: The global prosthetics market is estimated to register a compounded annual growth rate of 6% by 2027, according to data from Transparency Market Research, which forecasted the market share for the prosthetics market to reach a value of $15 billion in the next five years.

Within the U.S., creating domestically manufactured prosthetics rather than taking a chance on supply chain hiccups has increased the focus on 3D printing. One of the companies that has experienced an increase in the level of orders for 3D-printed prosthetics is 3DX Industries (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DDDX#OTC">DDDX</a>), headquartered in Ferndale, Washington. According to Roger Janssen, the company&rsquo;s president, orders for 3D-printed prosthetics accounts for 20% of its business, with the potential for greater share.

&ldquo;Yes, I do see it growing,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I don&#39;t want to put a number on it right now, but I know there&#39;s going to be more.&rdquo;

Janssen&rsquo;s company works with suppliers for the health care industry who have specific requests for manufacturing.

&ldquo;Although we do some engineering for our customers, we mostly build what they design,&rdquo; he continued. &ldquo;We manufacture parts where some medical companies are participating in prosthetics, including the different types of hip joint pieces and bone braces.&rdquo;

3DX is now celebrating its tenth anniversary in business and Janssen stated that he&rsquo;s observed a growing reliance on 3D printing to serve the customized needs of prosthetics, ranging from hand and limb replacements to dental procedures.

&ldquo;That&#39;s been driven by people understanding the printing more and the different technologies in the plastic world and the metal world,&rdquo; Janssen said.

Janssen credited his company&rsquo;s location as helping to raise its visibility within this sector.

&ldquo;We have a lot of medical industry here in the Seattle industry,&rdquo; he said.

&ldquo;I&#39;ve been manufacturing for 40 years in the Pacific Northwest region and a lot of people know the certain things we do. For us, it&#39;s kind of a word of mouth, and when we find something that looks interesting to manufacture, whether it be certain bone replacement parts or whatever it might be, we fill up our workload.&rdquo;

Janssen highlighted&nbsp;the time and cost savings of 3D printing, calling attention to a recent project that involved the manufacturing of a part needed for a prosthetic hand. If the part was created by traditional manufacturing, it could have taken up to eight weeks to complete at a cost of $1,500 per unit. Through 3D printing, however, the creation process would take up to three weeks and cost up to $150 per unit.

Janssen also recalled another project that offered a challenge he was not expecting.

&ldquo;The most difficult one was a unusually long bone screw,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;It was probably about 10 or 11 inches and had a very tiny hole down the center that the surgeons used to line up at the right angle when it goes into the body. In that tiny feature there would be a tiny wire that went down the center over that long distance. For us to manufacture it, that was quite a challenge.&rdquo;

Orca Attack: Marine biologists in South Africa are taking on a&nbsp;NCIS-worthy investigation involving what appears to be a pair of orcas killing great white sharks and devouring some of their internal organs.

<a href="https://www.natureworldnews.com/articles/51680/20220702/internal-organ-eating-orca-duo-preys-largest-predator-fish-great.htm">Nature World News</a> is reporting that eight great white shark carcasses have washed up on beaches of South Africa&rsquo;s Western Cape since 2017, with seven of the sharks missing their hearts. A recent study in the African Journal of Marine Science has theorized two orcas &mdash;&nbsp;also known as killer whales &mdash;&nbsp;were responsible for the attacks.

The great white sharks have not only been an integral part of the oceanographic ecosystem in this part of the world, but have also been an economic engine attracting thrill-seeking tourists eager to pursue cage diving. But since the orca attacks began, the presence of the sharks has declined and created new stress on the ecosystem.

It&#39;s especially true with a new belligerence by seals that are historically preyed upon by the sharks but who are now emboldened by their predators&rsquo; absence to actively hunt endangered African penguins.

Marine biologists added that more sharks were likely to have been killed by the orcas, noting they were only made aware of the situations when the sharks&rsquo; carcasses began appearing on shore.

Identifying Georgia&rsquo;s Wildlife: The Atlanta office of DS Smith plc (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DITHF#OTC">DITHF</a>) has teamed with the University of Georgia&rsquo;s (UGA) Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources on a project to identify the habitats and project the existence of at-risk animal species in southeast Georgia.

Hundreds of rare, threatened or endangered species in 15 Georgia counties are the focus of this partnership, which will identify species in the four vertebrate groups &mdash;&nbsp;mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles &mdash;&nbsp;and their dominant habitats.

&ldquo;As part of our ambitious Now and Next sustainability strategy, we&#39;ve committed to measuring and improving the biodiversity on our company-owned timberland,&rdquo; said DS Smith General Manager Bill Guthrie, who directed the UGA student researchers to evaluate the habitats in the approximately 17,000 acres owned by the company, including its Riceboro papermill in Southeast Georgia.

&ldquo;It&rsquo;s a three-phase project that starts by evaluating the soil types and ground cover to determine if it meets what&rsquo;s expected for our land,&rdquo; Guthrie said.

&ldquo;The second part will be a field related assessment of the flora and fauna that is on our land, and the third phase will be to bring it all together and draft ideas to improve the existing biodiversity that exists today.&rdquo;

The UGA students are using multiple tools to accomplish their research, including the iNaturalist app, Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History material, the Backyard Bird website, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Environmental Conservation online system and the Georgia Biodiversity Portal.

&ldquo;It&rsquo;s exciting to sponsor projects like these that offer students a chance to experience how corporate initiatives can translate into tangible results from a commitment to improving biodiversity and sustainability,&rdquo; added Allison Berg, sustainability manager for DS Smith North America.

And then we&#39;ll have a product division that will derive out of the manufacturing businesses where we can go to e-commerce or directly to retailers with the products.&rdquo;

Coriano predicted that in five years 3DX will transition into a holding company that covers multiple endeavors, adding that a strategy of acquisitions and significant investments in growing companies will help grow 3DX company further.

However, he noted that any business acquisition would need to include a real estate component, rather than acquire a company that is paying rent for its premises.

&ldquo;We&#39;ll probably buy our real estate where we&#39;re going to house ourselves in,&rdquo; he said.

Prior to joining 3DX, Coriano was a real estate investor whose commercial properties are within his H&ocirc;mescape LLC holding company. He confirmed that he is in discussion with the 3DX leadership on potentially bringing the H&ocirc;mescape properties into the planned real estate division, adding a decision would come later in November.

What Happens Next: Looking forward into 2022, Coriano predicted 3DX &ldquo;will acquire some more land bigger parcels of land to get involved in some special projects, whether it&#39;s 3D printing construction or developing more industrial properties to start the world&#39;s largest 3D printing park.&rdquo;

Coriano is also setting a goal of moving 3DX&rsquo;s trading platform in a step-by-step ascension to the OTCQB, followed by the OTCQX or other major stock exchanges, including the Nasdaq.

&ldquo;In the first half of next year, we&#39;ll be getting our paperwork straight and we&#39;re going to make some more acquisitions,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;And then by June, we&#39;ll be at OTCQB, which gets us fully audited fully reporting. And then June to December, we&rsquo;ll retain the appropriate securities counsel, accounting firms and investor relations agents and professionals to get us to the NASDAQ in 2023.&rdquo;

3D printing has created everything from knick-knacks to single-family houses, and its potential appears limitless. Among the most recent product developments generated by this technology are plant-based steaks, reusable rockets, aircraft engines and a schoolhouse in Malawi.

The global market for 3D printing products and services was valued at approximately $12.6 billion in 2020, according to data from Statista Research Department, and it is forecasted to expand at a compound annual growth rate of roughly 17% between 2020 and 2023.

No less of a figure than Cathie Wood, whose Ark Invest runs an exchange-traded fund partly focused on 3D printing, has declared it to be &ldquo;one of the highest growth potential industries in the economy.&rdquo;

In many ways, the 3D printing industry represents a work in progress as the full gamut of applications from this technology is slowly being embraced by different sectors.

For your consideration, here are five 3D printing companies whose stocks might deserve an extra bit of attention.

Nano Dimension Ltd.: (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NNDM#NASDAQ">NNDM</a>) This Israeli company was founded in 2012 and is best known for its proprietary DragonFly technology using digital files and simultaneous 3D-printing of dielectric and conductive materials to create multilayered electronic devices. A&nbsp;version 2.0 of the technology was announced in May.

Among the recent developments at the company have been the hiring of former Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) executive Sean Patterson as its president for the Americas, the acquisitions of 3D micro-printing provider NanoFabrica Ltd. and machine learning/deep learning provider DeepCube Ltd. and a joint venture with Germany&rsquo;s Hensoldt AG focused on creating the next generation of 3D electronic printing designs.

In its first-quarter earnings, Nano Dimensions reported $811,000 in revenue, up from $702,000 one year earlier, and a net loss of $9.3 million, compared with a $2 million loss in the previous year.

At last check, its stock was trading at $7.70, sandwiched between its 52-week high of $17.89 and its 52-week low of $1.31.

Proto Labs Inc.: (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PRLB#NYSE">PRLB</a>) Founded in 1999 and based in Maple Plain, Minnesota, this company is a digital manufacturing source for prototypes and low-volume production parts created with industrial 3D printing, CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication and injection molding technologies.

Proto Labs began the year with the acquisition of 3D Hubs Inc., an online manufacturing platform for custom parts, and the launch of a new digital quoting and design analysis platform for U.S. customers to improve project management with greater transparency &mdash;&nbsp;a similar platform was created for its European customers late last year.

In its first-quarter&nbsp;earnings, Proto Labs reported revenue of $116 million, up from $115 million one year earlier, and net income of $3.7 million, down from $13.9 million in the previous year. Its stock is now at $89.10, somewhat closer to its 52-week low of $82.60 than to its 52-week high of $286.57.

Stratasys Ltd.: (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SSYS#NASDAQ">SSYS</a>) Incorporated in 1989 and is headquartered in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, this company offers 3D printing systems and materials and also operates the online 3D printing industry resources Thingiverse.com and GrabCAD Community.

Earlier this year, Stratasys completed the acquisition of the San Francisco-based additive manufacturing provider Origin and UK-based RP Support Ltd., a provider of industrial stereolithography 3D printers and solutions. The company also introduced a trio of 3D printing solutions.

Stratasys reported first-quarter&nbsp;revenue of $134.2 million, up from $132.9 million one year earlier, and a net loss of $18,911, down from a loss of $21,788 in first-quarter&nbsp;2020. Its stock is currently at $23.32, which is closer to its 52-week low of $11.89 than its 52-week high of $56.95.

3D Systems Corporation: (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DDD#NYSE">DDD</a>) Founded in 1986 and headquartered in Rock Hill, South Carolina, this company serves a global market with a variety of hardware, software, materials and services, with a primary focus on healthcare and industrial markets.

Over the past two months, the company has seen a mix of growth strategies and calculated streamlining. It acquired a pair of companies &mdash;&nbsp;the 3D bioprinting and bioinks provider Allevi Inc. and the German software firm Additive Works GmbH and announced plans for a 50,000-square-foot expansion of its Denver-area facility while selling its On Demand Manufacturing business to the private equity firm Trilantic North America for $82 million.

In its Q1 earnings report, 3D Systems reported $146.1 million in revenue, up 7.7% from the $135.6 million recorded one year earlier, with a net income of $45.2 million versus the $18.9 million loss from one year earlier. At last check, its stock was trading at $36.11, closer to its 52-week high of $56.50 than to its 52-week low of $4.60.

3DX Industries Inc.: (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DDDX#OTC">DDDX</a>) Founded in 2008 and based in Ferndale, Oregon, this company&rsquo;s focus encompasses 3D metal and plastic printing along with additive and traditional manufacturing services including product design, engineering and assembly services.

The company is also in an expansion phase: Last month, it hired inventor and agronomist Anthony J. Bredberg to head its new research and development division while acquiring a patent portfolio&nbsp;to create a more environmentally efficient and friendly end product.

3DX has also brought in new executives to boost marketing, identify distressed and undervalued manufacturing facilities for potential acquisition and grow market share along the East Coast.

The new leadership team has its work cut out for them: First quarter revenue was $77,823, down from $87,115 one year earlier, while its $514,236 net income loss was greater than the $91,638 loss in the previous year. The company used its quarterly report to pledge the raising of &ldquo;additional financing through debt and or equity financing and by other means that it deems necessary, intending to move forward and sustain a prolonged growth in its strategy phases.&rdquo;

Still, penny stock fans and Reddit apes in search of unlikely opportunities might want to follow 3DX, whose budget-friendly stock was trading at 10 cents at last check,&nbsp;sandwiched between its 52-week high of 23 cents and its 52-week low on 1 cent.
