Florida's Department of Health announced plans to award 22 new medical cannabis licenses, a decision that could reshape the state's cannabis industry but is likely to face legal challenges.

The new licenses are a result of a 2017 law mandating an increase in licenses as the number of medical marijuana patients grows, which now surpasses 880,000. This process has attracted significant attention since it marks the first chance for new businesses to enter Florida&#8217;s medical cannabis market since the law&#8217;s enactment.
The department's letters of intent signal approval for 22 businesses out of the 74 that applied last year, each paying a $143,000 application fee. The evaluation process, carried out by consulting firm KPMG, cost the state nearly $1.79 million. However, the letters do not grant immediate operating licenses, leaving room for legal action from applicants who were not selected.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Anticipated Legal Battles</h3>

He also noted the substantial investments made by applicants and the department's responsibility to ensure that approved operators meet high standards for quality.
Applicants have called for legislative intervention to prevent prolonged delays. Attorney Paula Savchenko, who worked with Florida Sports Consultants, Inc.—operating as Belushi's Farm Florida—said the process could stall for months or even years without action.
"If we don't have a legislative fix, we're going to see these licenses held up for anywhere between six months to two years," Savchenko said.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Industry Shifts And New Players</h3>
Notable applicants receiving letters include Florida Sports Consultants, Inc., led by actor Jim Belushi, who also operates a cannabis farm in Oregon. Other approved businesses include STIIIZY Florida, LLC, A Good Decision, LLC and Theory Wellness of Florida, LLC. The additions bring Florida closer to doubling its licensed operators, which currently stand at 25, managing over 690 dispensaries statewide.
Quincy-based Trulieve Cannabis Corp. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TCNNF#OTC">TCNNF</a>), the state's largest medical marijuana operator, welcomed the expansion. 
"We are pleased that the licenses are finally issued, bringing the number of licensees to 47. We continue to look forward to working with the governor and legislature to expand access to safe, lab-tested cannabis for Floridians," the company said in a statement.

Along with the Lions and Cowboys, four other NFL teams will be featured across three NFL games on Thanksgiving Day.
Lions and Cowboys Thanksgiving Day Games: Dating back to 1934, the Detroit Lions have played in the annual Thanksgiving Day game. The lone exceptions were the 1939 through 1944 seasons that weren&#8217;t played due to World War II. The games have become a staple for the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/nfl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Football League.</a>
The idea for the Thanksgiving Day game was&nbsp;<a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/32646037/nfl-thanksgiving-day-games-history-lions-cowboys-play-every-year-moments-traditions-records" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">created&nbsp;</a>by former Lions owner&nbsp;G.A. All three home teams are the favorites in their Thursday games. Betting odds from DraftKings Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DKNG#NASDAQ">DKNG</a>) show the Lions favored by 9.5 points, the Cowboys favored by 3.5 points and the Packers favored by 3.5 points.
Betting on all three favorites to win pays out with odds of +212, which would turn $100 bet into a profit of $212 if the Lions, Cowboys and Packers all win. Betting on all three favorites to cover the spread and win by the totals listed above would pay out at +638, turning $100 bet into a profit of $638 if all three teams cover.
Betting favorites on Thanksgiving Day are 48-9 straight up and 38-19 against the spread since 2004, according to <a href="https://www.actionnetwork.com/nfl/nfl-thanksgiving-betting-trends-stats-notes-action-network-betting-primer-2024">data </a>from Action Network.
A win by the Bears could be one of the biggest upsets on Thanksgiving Day since 1980 depending on where the spread closes. The current record is the Dolphins beating the Cowboys as 10-point underdogs in 1993. The Packers win over the Lions in 2023 as 8.5-point underdogs ranks second.
Why It's Important: The Thanksgiving Day NFL games could be part of a huge week for sportsbooks. Macquarie analyst Chad Beynon estimates $4.5 billion will be bet by U.S. bettors over Thanksgiving week from Nov. 25 to Dec. 1, as <a href="https://www.casino.org/news/thanksgiving-football-feast-4-5b-in-wagers-expected-this-week/">reported </a>by Casino.org.
This figure would be up 11% year-over-year and comes with a record 38 states and Washington D.C. allowing legal sports betting for this year's Thanksgiving Day games.
Prime-time games, which typically occur at nighttime often see increased betting with more viewers watching. The three Thanksgiving Day games could all be treated like prime-time games according to Beynon.
The Thanksgiving Day games feature the red-hot Lions who have won nine games in a row and are the current betting favorites to win Super Bowl LIX. The Lions are one of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/sports-betting/24/09/40720484/which-4-teams-have-never-reached-the-super-bowl-betting-payouts-if-history-is-made-in-2024">only four teams </a>to never make a Super Bowl appearance.
DraftKings lists the Lions as the Super Bowl favorites at +250, ranking ahead of the Kansas City Chiefs (+450), who are seeking a third-straight championship. The Packers rank sixth with odds of +1,600 and the Dolphins have odds of +9,000.
The other Thursday teams (Giants, Bears, Cowboys) all have odds of +100,000 to win Super Bowl LIX as all will likely miss making the NFL Playoffs.

When you write about U.S. stocks as much as I do, you tend to forget about the many other investment ideas available to retail investors in this country. There are plenty.&nbsp;



In recent years, the private capital markets have grown in stature and popularity. That&rsquo;s evident by the big move by pension funds into private equity and other so-called alternative assets.&nbsp;



According to the Global Pension Assets Study &ndash; 2024, the percentage of pension fund assets invested in public equities dropped from <a href="https://www.thinkingaheadinstitute.org/research-papers/global-pension-assets-study-2024/">50.7%</a> in 2003 to 41.6% in 2023. Over these 20 years, the allocation to alternative assets rose 840 basis points to 20.1%.



For investors looking for quality information about the various asset classes, the Bank of America (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/bac-stock-quote/">BAC</a>) <a href="https://fa.ml.com/new-york/new-york/the_jemm_group/mediahandler/media/595849/2023Q3_CIO_Chartbook_GIC.pdf">quarterly chart book</a> for institutional investors is chock-full of information.&nbsp;



For example, the Q3 2023 chartbook examines the risk and returns of various private and public asset classes between July 2005 and March 31, 2023. Private credit had the best return with the least volatility, public equities had the best return with the most volatility, while private equity fell between the two.&nbsp;



Based on these findings, here are my three best investment ideas.



<h2>Ares Capital Corporation (ARCC)</h2>

ARCC is <a href="https://www.sec.gov/ix?doc=/Archives/edgar/data/1287750/000128775024000011/arcc-20231231.htm">externally managed</a> by Ares Capital Management, an investment adviser owned by alternative asset manager Ares Management (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/ares-stock-quote/">ARES</a>). It invests in the &ldquo;middle market,&rdquo; defined as companies with annual EBITDA &mdash; or earnings before interest taxes, depreciation and amortization &mdash; between $10 million and $250 million.&nbsp;



Its investments range from $30 million to $500 million, and a good portion are first-lien senior secured loans and second-lien senior secured loans. It also invests in subordinated debt, which can include common and preferred equity.



On May 1, the BDC reported its <a href="https://ir.arescapitalcorp.com/news/ares-capital-corporation-announces-march-31-2024-financial-results-and-declares-second-quarter-2024-dividend/c0d49647-ffc4-4bb7-b651-5d031f418e1d/">Q1 2024 results</a>. Investors shouldn&rsquo;t put much stock in the income statement because it varies from quarter to quarter, based on realized and unrealized gains. Excluding these, its core earnings per share were $0.59, two cents higher than a year earlier.&nbsp;



More importantly, its net assets per share were $19.53, up from $19.24 at the end of December. The fair value of its portfolio of investments as of March 31 was $23.12 billion, up from $22.87 billion at the end of December.&nbsp;



Yielding 9.1%, its annualized total return over the past five years was <a href="https://www.morningstar.com/stocks/xnas/arcc/trailing-returns">11.22%</a>. If income is your thing, ARCC is an excellent way to play private credit.&nbsp;



<h2>Blackstone (BX)</h2>

Those assets are divided among four buckets: Real Estate, which constitutes 32% of AUM, Private Equity at 29%, Credit &amp; Insurance at 31% and Multi-Asset Investing at 8%.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



When you analyze alternative asset managers, remember that there are many moving parts and metrics to pay attention to.&nbsp;



For example, the most important metric is the growth in fee-earning assets. In Q1 2024, they rose 7% year-over-year to $781.4 billion. Those assets generated $4.47 billion in revenue in the trailing 12 months ended March 31, 4% higher than a year earlier.&nbsp;



In addition to the fee-related earnings, there are performance fees for beating their segment&rsquo;s benchmarks. In the 12 months which ended March 31, they were $1.18 billion, 52% less than a year earlier.



As a result, its segment distributable earnings fell by 17% to $5.65 billion. If its fee-earning assets fell over this period, that might have caused some concern, but that didn&rsquo;t happen.&nbsp;



Also, significant are the funds yet to be invested. These are referred to as &ldquo;dry powder.&rdquo; As of March 31, it was $191.2 billion, with private equity possessing the most at $80.0 billion.



I could go on and on about its quarterly results.&nbsp;



Although its shares are flat year-to-date, BX stock is up nearly about 49% over the past year and about 207% over the past five years.&nbsp;



It&rsquo;s an excellent proxy for alternative assets.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



<h2>Dimensional World Equity ETF (DFAW)</h2>

Former presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has been selected by Donald Trump as his pick to lead the Department of<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/24/11/41993115/trump-taps-rfk-jr-for-health-secretary-role-sends-5-vaccine-stocks-lower"> Health and Human Services (HHS).</a>



Here's a look at Kennedy's wealth and investments.



What Happened: Trump announced many of<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/education/24/11/42204590/trump-department-of-homeland-security-pick-kristi-noem-owns-ranch-invests-in-energy-gets-book-royalties"> his likely nominations</a> for roles in his cabinet since winning the 2024 presidential election, with Kennedy one of the more well-known names selected.



Kennedy is known for many things including being an environmental lawyer, having an anti-vaccine stance and belonging to the famous Kennedy political family.



Kennedy is the son of Robert F. Kennedy and nephew of former President John F. Kennedy. The former president was one of the wealthiest of all time adjusted for inflation thanks to his father Joseph Kennedy's banking and investing career.

Kennedy's Wealth and Investments: An estimate from <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/chasewithorn/2024/11/14/heres-how-much-robert-f-kennedy-jr-is-worth/">Forbes </a>values Kennedy with a wealth of $15 million, which includes his wife Cheryl Hines income from acting. Around $4 million of the wealth is estimated to have been inherited from the Kennedy family.



A 2023 disclosure <a href="https://www.politico.com/f/?id=0000018e-66dd-d570-adaf-e6ffcb4a0000">filing </a>listed several sources of income for Kennedy including from his law firm, speaking engagements and consulting fees from a publisher. The biggest income listed was over $5 million from his own law firm made in the year reported on the disclosure.



Kennedy will be paid an annual salary of $246,400 if elected to lead HHS.



The filing showed Hines' investments in several mutual funds and ETFs including:

Kennedy has $500,000 in investments managed by Park Financial Holdings, according to Forbes.



Real estate holdings are also listed in the financial disclosures, which add to the wealth of Kennedy and Hines.



The filing also listed that Kennedy and Hines owned between $100,000 and $250,000 in Bitcoin. The filing was from June 2023, which is when Bitcoin traded closer to $30,000 versus a value close to $95,000 today.



Kennedy recently said that <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/24/11/42091664/robert-kennedy-jr-says-most-of-his-wealth-is-in-bitcoin-is-committed-to-the-currency-of-fr">most of his wealth</a> is in Bitcoin, which could suggest that he now owns more Bitcoin than reported last year.

Income from Oil?: Benzinga <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/politics/24/03/37949004/robert-f-kennedy-jr-environmental-lawyer-receives-oil-company-profits">previously reported</a> Kennedy also profits from oil and gas rights through a family investment, despite being a prolific activist and environmental lawyer.



The 2024 presidential candidate has been a critic of fossil fuels and oil and gas companies over the years.



A report from&nbsp;<a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2024/03/25/rfk-jr-family-trust-oil-gas-00148846" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Politico&nbsp;</a>shared that while Kennedy was openly against the oil and gas industry, he also privately earned &#8220;tens of thousands of dollars from an oil and gas rights leasing company.&#8221;



According to the report, Kennedy&#8217;s financial disclosure form showed earnings from&nbsp;Arctic Royalty Limited Partnership.



Kennedy&#8217;s earnings from Arctic Royalty were $17,759 to $29,257 from Jan. 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023, as per the disclosure. The earnings were paid to the family trust owned by Kennedy.



Politico shares that Arctic Royalty Limited Partnership leases land in states to oil and gas companies. Among the companies that have leased land from Arctic Royalty are several companies fined for pollution or infractions previously, including the chemical company involved in the pollution of East Palestine, Ohio, after a train derailed in 2023.



Kennedy told Politico that he sold his stake in Arctic Royalty in December, but did not share proof of the sale.



&#8220;I sold all my stake in this company in December. I still indirectly own a very small interest in Arctic Royalty through my brother David&#8217;s estate. It generates approximately $1,000 per year. I own 1/10 of the estate. Because other family members are also owners, I have no power to sell off this investment,&#8221; Kennedy told Politico.



Kennedy said that Arctic Royalty was an investment made by his grandfather that he inherited.



&#8220;The company does not do any drilling. It owns mineral rights and pays out royalties from companies that are exploiting oil reserves.&#8221;



Kennedy has been active as a voice against pollution and harm to the environment over the years.



The former presidential candidate was also previously critical of President Joe Biden&#8216;s response to the handling of the East Palestine, Ohio, train disaster, saying everybody involved should &#8220;be held accountable, both criminally and civilly.&#8221;



While it&#8217;s not illegal to own stakes in oil and gas royalty companies as a politician, this could be a bad look for a person who is so anti-pollution and against oil and gas companies.
