A Trump presidency<a href="https://europeancapitalinsights.substack.com/p/europe-frets-about-recession-after?r=3nmatg"> has raised concern in Europe that a new round</a> of tariffs under his <a href="https://www.euronews.com/business/2024/11/04/how-much-could-trumps-tariffs-damage-europes-economy">administration will cause a economic recession</a> in Europe.
A trade war during Trump's four-year term would also increase the probability of the European Central Bank (ECB) cutting rates faster to spur growth. Analysts issued pessimistic outlooks for European economic growth after Trump won the election.
On election day, the US dollar rallied sharply, sending the euro to a four-month low and boosting Bitcoin by 10% to a record high. 
European stocks exposed to the US have already shown their vulnerability. A Barclays basket of 28 <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/europe-trump-win-outlook-trade-war-tariff-crypto-djt-election-2024-10">European stocks sensitive to US tariffs</a> has underperformed the broader STOXX600 index by 15% this year.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Trump Presidency Could Impact Europe's GDP</h3>
The European Union (EU) will need to confront the reality of a much different relationship with its largest trading partner from January 20. Previous <a href="https://www.euronews.com/my-europe/2024/10/24/would-donald-trumps-trade-tariffs-hurt-europe">tariffs on 6.4 billion in EU steel and aluminum</a>, alongside threats on automotive imports, have shown how US protectionism can reverberate through European economies.&nbsp;
Trump&#8217;s potential trade policies in 2025, including a proposed 10% to 20% <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/c0f1d1b9-8348-4b7d-8ab7-186fcf2ebbd1">tariff on European goods</a>, pose a substantial threat to European growth. Following Trump&#8217;s win, Goldman Sachs <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/783a573c-7ff3-461c-86f5-f194a89e3926">downgraded Europe's growth</a> for 2025 from 1.1% to 0.8%, citing limited European auto exports.
The German economic institute IW believes the <a href="https://www.reuters.com/markets/europe/trump-presidency-could-deal-heavy-blow-germanys-flagging-economy-2024-10-24/">Eurozone&#8217;s GDP could decline by 1.5%</a> in 2027 and 2028. Goldman Sachs expects a 1% reduction if a 10% universal tariff is implemented instead.
Historically, Trump&#8217;s tariffs have hampered European growth due to steep declines in exports, a trend that could repeat. Major exports to the US accounted for ~90% of all European transatlantic exports in 2023 to €502.3 billion, European Commission (EC) data showed.&nbsp;

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Trump Presidency Could Cause Eurozone GDP Loos</h3>
The blow to the Eurozone from a potential 1.5% GDP reduction could translate to a €260 billion loss on an estimated GDP of €17.4 trillion for 2024. This is over half the entire transatlantic exports registered in 2023.
"The direct effects and the indirect effects and the <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-11-06/ecb-s-guindos-warns-of-huge-implications-of-trump-tariff-plans">deviations of commerce will be huge</a>, ECB Vice-President and French central bank head Francois Villeroy said on Wednesday.
Even the lower end of the proposed tariffs would compel ECB policymakers to cut rates more aggressively in 2025 if Trump implements his economic policies. Sven Jari Stehn of Goldman Sachs said in a note on Wednesday that he expects the ECB to cut an additional quarter-point in July.
&#8220;The American election must sound like <a href="https://www.reuters.com/markets/ecbs-villeroy-trump-election-means-more-risks-world-economy-2024-11-06/">a wakeup call for Europe</a>,&#8221; Villeroy said.&nbsp;
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Germany At Greater Risk From Trump Presidency</h3>
Nations with large trade surpluses with the US face significant risks from policies that have strained transatlantic economic relationships in the past.&nbsp;
&#8220;Half of Germany&#8217;s growth always comes from exports and if you look at what&#8217;s going on in the world, you have to say that this pillar is under attack,&#8221; Germany's Economy Minister Robert Habeck said in October.&nbsp;
Germany exported over €157.7 billion of goods to the US in 2023. However, exports to the US contracted by 0.3% amid slowing demand and geopolitical escalation.&nbsp;

Dirk Schumacher, head of European macro research at Natixis Corporate &amp; Investment Banking Germany, says a 10% tariff increase could reduce Germany&#8217;s GDP by approximately 0.5%. A study by the Hans Boeckler Foundation macroeconomic institute suggests a <a href="https://www.reuters.com/markets/europe/trump-presidency-could-deal-heavy-blow-germanys-flagging-economy-2024-10-24/">1% GDP erosion by 2026 if Trump implemented a 20% tarif</a>f.&nbsp;
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Germany Is Only G7 Nation Without Growth For Two Years</h3>
Germany remains the only G7 nation that has <a href="https://www.euronews.com/business/2023/07/30/germany-expected-to-be-only-major-economy-not-to-grow-this-year">failed to grow for two years</a> due to higher energy prices, borrowing costs, and a slow rebound in China. Europe&#8217;s largest economy would suffer if its largest trading partner reduced output and imposed tariffs on China.

&#8220;Germany isn&#8217;t going to be bailed out by a restoration of growth in China," Jacob Funk Kirkegaard, senior fellow at Bruegel and the Peterson Institute for International Economics, told Reuters.
An Ifo study found that German exports to China and the US could fall by 9.6% and 14.9% in a full-scale trade war scenario in which the US imposes a 60% tariff on Chinese goods. Pharmaceutical and car exports would be hit the hardest, down 35% and 32%, the Ifo said.
Trump's tariffs would substantially trim European exports to the US, possibly creating a cycle of retaliation.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Swift Retaliatory Action From Europe</h3>
Nigel Green, CEO of deVere Group, believes that Trump's presidency would initiate a new trade war with Europe but sounded the alarm of swift retaliation.&nbsp;
"The market is <a href="https://www.financialmirror.com/2024/10/29/trump-trade-war-with-europe-would-hurt-us-stocks/">underestimating the risk of swift European retaliation</a> and the pressure this could place on key American stocks," he said.
Retaliatory measures could hit US earnings in the S&amp;P 500 by 1.5% next year. However, European stocks exposed to US tariffs could plunge as much as 7%, according to Barclays.&nbsp;
&#8220;In the event of a full-blown trade war, we could see up to a high single-digit drag on EPS growth with Germany," Barclays' head of European equity strategy, Emmanuel Cau, said. However, Goldman Sachs believes that a 1% GDP loss, if transported, would erase EPS growth for 2025.
Certain European sectors could still gain from a Trump presidency.&nbsp;
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Defense Will Benefit From Trump Presidency&nbsp;</h3>
In addition to the energy sector, defense companies could see increased demand from European nations under a Trump Presidency. He is likely to push them to increase their NATO defense spending.&nbsp;
Earlier in 2024, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/feb/14/nato-chief-rebukes-donald-trump-and-announces-record-defence-spending">he threatened to "not protect"</a> any alliance members that failed to ramp up their defense spending to the 2% GDP target.&nbsp;
Following the warning, NATO claimed that more than 18 members would <a href="https://www.euractiv.com/section/defence-and-security/news/nato-says-18-members-will-reach-2-spending-target-this-year/">surpass the 2% target </a>this year. The number of allies meeting or exceeding the target soared to 23 this year, prompting <a href="https://breakingdefense.com/2024/10/trump-wants-nato-to-hit-3-percent-gdp-on-defense-the-us-could-fall-short/">Trump to raise the bar to 3% of GDP</a>.&nbsp;

After taking office, Mark Rutte, the new Secretary General of NATO, said, &#8220;thanks to Trump&#8221; NATO increased defense spending. In Europe, <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/7/11/how-much-does-each-nato-country-spend-in-2024">Poland doubled the defense spending target</a> at 4.12% and Estonia by 3.43%, followed by Latvia and Greece.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">European Stocks For Trump Presidency</h3>
Poland, Estonia, Latvia, and Greece have been increasing their defense spending and primarily source military equipment from a combination of US and European defense contractors.&nbsp;

Dassault Aviation SA (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/duavf#OTC">DUAVF</a>) reported a 38% drop in its net profit for 2014.
Dassault Aviation's net profit for the year slipped to 282.87 million euros ($302.7 million) from 459.45 million euros, while adjusted net income declined to 398 million euros in 2014 from 487 million euros in 2013. 
Its sales dropped to 3.68 billion euros, versus 4.59 billion euros.
Consolidated order intake increased to 4.64 billion euros from 4.17 billion euros.
Operating margin narrowed to 9.6% of net sales from 10.9% in 2013. 
At 31 December 2014, consolidated backlog was EUR 8,217 million, versus EUR 7,379 million at 31 December 2013.
Dassault Aviation's board would recommend a dividend of 10 euros per share for 2015.

Dassault Aviation Posts Drop In 2014 Profit

Dassault Aviation SA (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/duavf#OTC">DUAVF</a>) reported a 25% gain in its 2012 net profit.

Dassault Aviation's 2012 net profit surged to EUR524 million, while revenue rose 19% to EUR3.94 billion.

Its order backlog dropped 9% y/y to EUR7.99 billion at the end of 2012, versus EUR8.75 billion in 2011.

Dassault Aviation 2012 Profit Rises 25%

Dollar General Corp (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/dg#NYSE">DG</a>) reported a rise in its fourth-quarter profit. Dollar General's quarterly profit rose to $292.5 million, or $0.85 per share, versus $222.6 million, or $0.64 per share, in the year-earlier period. Its adjusted profit came in at $0.87 per share. Sales climbed 20% to $4.19 billion. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.82 per share on sales of $4.1 billion. Dollar General projects current fiscal-year adjusted profit of $2.65 to $2.75 per share, versus analysts' estimates of $2.71 per share.

Lululemon Athletica Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/lulu#NASDAQ">LULU</a>) reported a rise in its quarterly profit. Lululemon posted its quarterly net income at $73.5 million, or $0.51 per share, up from $54.8 million, or $0.38 per share, in the year-ago period. Lululemon's revenue surged 51.4% to $371.5 million. However, sales at established stores surged 26%. Analysts were expecting earnings of $0.49 per share on revenue of $362.37 million.

FedEx Corp (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fdx#NYSE">FDX</a>) posted a surge in its fiscal third-quarter profit. FedEx's quarterly profit surged to $521 million, or $1.65 per share, from $231 million, or $0.73 per share, in the year-ago period. Its revenue climbed to $10.56 billion from $9.66 billion. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $1.34 per share on revenue of $10.60 billion. 

ConAgra Foods Inc (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/cag#NYSE">CAG</a>) reported a rise in its third-quarter profit. ConAgra's quarterly profit surged to $271.6 million, or $0.65 per share, versus $214.8 million, or $0.50 per share, in the year-earlier period. Its net sales climbed 7% to $3.37 billion. Excluding items, ConAgra posted its earnings at $0.51 per share. Analysts were expecting earnings of $0.49 per share on sales of $3.36 billion.

Signet Jewelers Ltd (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/sig#NYSE">SIG</a>) reported a rise in its fourth-quarter profit. Signet's quarterly net income climbed to $156.6 million, or $1.79 per share, from 105.4 million, or $1.21 per share, in the year-ago period. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $1.77 per share. Signet's sales gained 6.6% to $1.35 billion, versus analysts' estimates of $1.36 billion. Sales at stores open at least a year surged 9.1%. Signet lifted its quarterly dividend by 20% to 12 cents.

Schiff Nutrition International Inc (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/wni#NYSE">WNI</a>) reported its Q3 EPS at $0.16 on revenue of $72.2 million. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.13 per share on revenue of $65.55 million.

IHS Inc (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ihs#NYSE">IHS</a>) reported a 26% drop in its fiscal first-quarter earnings. The company also announced its plans to buy IMS Research for $46 million. IHS lifted its full-year revenue forecast by $25 million to a range of $1.525 billion to $1.575 billion. IHS posted its quarterly profit at $23.5 million, or $0.35 per share, versus $31.9 million, or $0.49 per share, in the year-ago epriod. Excluding special items, IHS earned $0.77 per share. Its revenue climbed 17% to $342.7 million. Analysts were expecting earnings of $0.81 per share on revenue of $357 million. 

Perry Ellis International Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/pery#NASDAQ">PERY</a>) reported a better-than-expected fourth-quarter profit. Perry Ellis' quarterly profit dropped to $1.8 million, or $0.12 per share, from $7.7 million, or $0.54 per share, in the year-ago period. Excluding items, Perry Ellis earned $0.38 per share. Its sales climbed 11% to $229.4 million. Analysts were expecting earnings of $0.37 per share on revenue of $229.3 million.

UTi Worldwide Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/utiw#NASDAQ">UTIW</a>) reported its Q4 EPS at $0.2 on revenue of $1.15 billion. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.16 per share on revenue of $1.20 billion. 

Kingfisher PLC (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/kgfhy#OTC">KGFHY</a>) reported a 30% surge in its full-year profit. Kingfisher's net profit for the full year climbed to 649 million pounds ($1 billion), from £494 million in the previous year. Its sales surged 3.6% to £10.8 billion and climbed 1.3% on a comparable basis. Kingfisher lifted its full-year dividend by 25% to 8.84 pence.

Met-Pro Corp (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/mpr#NYSE">MPR</a>) reported its Q4 EPS at $0.15 on revenue of $28.4 million. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.15 per share on revenue of $27.19 million.

Wharf (Holdings) Ltd (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/warfy#OTC">WARFY</a>) reported a 14% drop in its net profit in 2011. Wharf's 2011 net profit fell to HK$30.57 billion, from HK$35.75 billion in the previous year. Its underlying profit climbed 14% to HK$8.08 billion from HK$7.09 billion. Wharf's revenue surged 24% to HK$24 billion from HK$19.38 billion. 

GameStop Corp (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/gme#NYSE">GME</a>) reported its Q4 EPS at $1.73 on revenue of $3.58 billion. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $1.72 per share on revenue of $3.72 billion.

 Sigma Pharmaceuticals Ltd (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/sgmff#OTC">SGMFF</a>) swung to profit in fiscal 2011. Sigma posted a net profit of 49.2 million Australian dollars (US$51.4 million), versus a year-ago loss of A$235.4 million. Its revenue dropped 2.1% y/y to A$2.85 billion, from A$2.91 billion.

Dassault Aviation SA (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/duavf#OTC">DUAVF</a>) reported a drop in its 2011 operating profit. Dassault Aviation's operating profit declined 36% to EUR377 million. Its revenue fell 21% to EUR3.31 billion. Dassault Aviation's net profit rose 10% to EUR407 million. Excluding the dividend from Thales, the company's core net profit declined 29% to EUR282 million.

Li &amp; Fung Ltd (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/lfugy#OTC">LFUGY</a>) posted a 24% increase in its net profit for 2011. Li &amp; Fung's 2011 profit rose to $681 million, versus a restated net profit of $548 million in 2010. However, analysts were expecting a profit of $617 million.

Partner Communications Company Ltd (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ptnr#NASDAQ">PTNR</a>) reported a 60% decline in its adjusted fourth-quarter net profit. Partner's quarterly net profit, excluding one-off items, dropped to 123 million shekels ($32 million), from 304 million, in the year-ago period. Last month, Partner had expected a profit of 132 million shekels. Partner's revenue dropped 10% to 1.59 billion shekels.

Canada's Whitecap Resources Inc (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/spgyf#OTC">SPGYF</a>) posted a profit in the fourth quarter. Whitecap Resources posted a quarterly net income of C$3.2 million, or 4 Canadian cents per share, versus a year-ago net loss of C$4.1 million, or 12 Canadian cents per share. Its revenue jumped to C$47.5 million.

Hermes International (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/hesay#OTC">HESAY</a>) reported better-than-expected full-year profit and lifted its dividend by 33%. Hermes will pay shareholders 2 euros a share on 2011 earnings, versus 1.50 euros per share, in the year-earlier period. Hermes' full-year net income surged 41% to 594 million euros, beating analysts' estimates of 560 million.
