Let me tell you something about Warren Buffett that might shock you.

Then he went to work for Graham at Graham-Newman, where he really got his hands dirty with deep value investing. And let me tell you, he wasn&#8217;t looking for wonderful businesses back then &#8211; he was hunting for cheap stocks in solid companies that Wall Street had tossed in the bargain bin.
I&#8217;ve spent countless hours poring over Buffett&#8217;s partnership letters from 1957 to 1970, and they&#8217;re an absolute goldmine of investment wisdom. They show us exactly how he built his initial fortune, and more importantly, how we can apply those same principles today.
The Four Ways Buffett Really Made His Money
Buffett divided his investments into four distinct categories, and understanding these is crucial if you want to follow in his footsteps:
1. The Private Owner Approach
This was Buffett&#8217;s bread and butter. He&#8217;d find companies that were dirt cheap compared to their actual worth and buy them like he was going to own them forever. He wasn&#8217;t looking for quarterly earnings beats or momentum plays &#8211; he was looking for real businesses selling for less than they were worth.
2. The Relatively Undervalued Play
These weren&#8217;t the screaming bargains of category one, but they were still companies trading below their intrinsic value. Think of it as buying dollar bills for 70 cents instead of 50 cents. Not as sexy, but still profitable if you&#8217;re patient.
3. The Work-Out Situation
This is where Buffett really showed his creativity. He&#8217;d find special situations &#8211; mergers, spinoffs, reorganizations &#8211; where he could make money regardless of what the broader market was doing. It&#8217;s like finding a $20 bill in the street &#8211; it doesn&#8217;t matter if the stock market is up or down that day.
4. The Control Play
This is where things get really interesting. Sometimes Buffett would buy enough stock to influence company decisions. Take the Dempster Mill story &#8211; he bought a controlling stake in a company selling for $18 that had a book value of $72. That&#8217;s like buying a dollar for a quarter!

But here&#8217;s the beautiful part &#8211; it was trading for $18 per share when it had a book value of $72. That&#8217;s the kind of discount that makes value investors salivate. Buffett slowly accumulated shares until he owned over 70% of the company. Then he brought in new management, cleaned house, and nearly tripled his money.
Was it pretty? No. Was it easy? Absolutely not. But it was profitable, and that&#8217;s what counts in this business.
The American Express Opportunity
Sometimes the market hands you a gift wrapped in newspaper headlines of doom and gloom. That&#8217;s exactly what happened with American Express during the Salad Oil Scandal of 1963. Everyone thought AmEx was going down in flames because of a massive fraud involving soybean oil warehouse receipts (yes, really).

The Real Way Warren Buffett Got Rich (And Why You Should Care)

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMD#NASDAQ">AMD</a>) shares <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/movers" rel="noreferrer noopener">are trading lower on Wednesday.</a>
Yesterday, the company reported fourth-quarter revenue of $7.66 billion, beating&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">analyst estimates</a> of $7.53 billion. The chipmaker reported fourth-quarter adjusted earnings of $1.09 per share, beating <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/25/02/43480688/amd-q4-earnings-revenue-beat-eps-beat-data-center-continued-growth" rel="noreferrer noopener">analyst estimates of $1.08 per share.</a>
AMD expects first-quarter revenue of approximately $7.1 billion, plus or minus $300 million. The company&#8217;s revenue guidance represents year-over-year growth of approximately 30% at the midpoint.
Here are the analysts&#8217; <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/AMD/analyst-ratings" rel="noreferrer noopener">takes on the earnings results:</a>
BofA Securities analyst Vivek Arya reiterated the Neutral rating on the stock, lowering the price forecast to $135 from $155.
The analyst noted the company&#8217;s struggle to carve out a niche against NVIDIA Corporation&#8216;s dominance and the rise of custom AI chips.
The analyst writes AMD&#8217;s fourth quarter was in line with expectations, with stronger PC sales offsetting weakness in data centers.
Arya adds that first quarter sales are expected to be modestly better, driven by consumer PC and gaming, unlike Intel Corporation&#8217;s weaker outlook.
For the AI GPU segment, the analyst now forecasts $7.5 billion in 2025, slightly lower than the previous $8 billion estimate.

Goldman Sachs analyst Toshiya Hari maintained Neutral rating on Advanced Micro Devices, lowering the price forecast to $125 from $129. The analyst raises 2025 and 2026 revenue estimates by 5% and 4% due to stronger Client and Gaming segments, despite lower Data Center and Embedded revenue.
Non-GAAP EPS estimates for 2025 and 2026 increase by 6% and 1%, reaching $4.56 and $6.10, driven by higher revenue, partly offset by lower gross margins and higher operating expenses.
The analyst also introduces 2027 revenue estimates of $46.6 billion (+18% year over year) and non-GAAP EPS of $7.66 (+26% year over year).
JP Morgan analyst Harlan Sur maintained the Neutral rating on Advanced Micro Devices, lowering the price forecast to $130 from $180.
The analyst notes Advanced Micro Devices&#8217; mixed demand in Embedded, with strong performance in aerospace/defense and test/emulation, but challenges in cyclical sectors like industrial and communication.
However, per Sur, these sectors will stabilize by mid-year as market recovery picks up in the second half. The analyst lowers forward estimates due to weaker-than-expected demand for data center GPUs.
Benchmark analyst Cody Acree reiterated the Buy rating on the stock, lowering the price forecast to $170 from $200.
The analyst views the company&#8217;s report and outlook as solid, attributing the softness in GPU guidance to a positive product transition.
Customers are eagerly awaiting the next-gen platform, which was pulled forward, Acree writes.
After surpassing its $5 billion AI GPU revenue goal for FY24, the company expects a slower revenue pace in the first half of 2025 as customers focus on existing programs while awaiting the MI350 platform release. The production ramp for MI350 has been moved up by a quarter, now expected in mid-2025 instead of the second half, Acree adds.
Rosenblatt analyst Hans Mosesmann reiterated the Buy rating, lowering the price forecast from $250 to $225.
Mosesmann lowers the 2025 MI300 series sales forecast to $7 billion from $9.2 billion, reflecting a flatter 2H24 to 1H25 product transition to MI325/350X.
Northland analyst Gus Richard reiterated the Outperform rating on AMD, with a price forecast of $175.
AI revenue is expected to stay flat in the first half of 2025 and the second half of 2024, raising concerns, but a stronger second half is anticipated, with $9.2 billion in AI revenue on the back of the MI350 in the latter half.
After being oversold, Advanced Micro Devices shares bounced, and the analyst recommends buying on weakness.
Price Action: AMD shares are trading lower by 7.82% to $110.16 at last check Wednesday.

AMD's AI Ambitions Face NVIDIA's Dominance—Analysts See Growth, But Challenges Remain

"We got really lucky about six years ago when we started exploring how cannabinoids might be used to treat drug-resistant infections," says Dr. Dana Lambert, CEO of Andira Pharmaceuticals, in an exclusive interview with <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/cannabis">Benzinga</a>.
Dr. Lambert doesn't speak like an academic. Despite holding a Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences, she talks like someone who has witnessed medicine fail firsthand. She began her career as a hospital pharmacist, working with critically ill patients — people battling cancer, severe infections and other conditions where existing treatments often fell short. 
She saw, up close, the limitations of conventional medicine, "particularly when it comes to treating drug-resistant infections and cancer-related conditions."
But instead of accepting those limitations as inevitable, she took a bold step: she left her clinical practice entirely to pursue pharmaceutical research. 
"I became increasingly interested in new therapeutic approaches, especially as research started emerging on the potential of cannabinoids in treating cancer and antimicrobial-resistant infections," she says.
That realization drove her to earn a Ph.D.; not because she wanted a career in academia, but because she needed the tools to create real-world solutions. 
"I'm probably the furthest thing from an academic scientist you'll ever meet," Lambert says. "I did it because I wanted to learn how to develop drugs and get involved in early-stage research and drug discovery."
What she and her team at Andira Pharmaceuticals uncovered was something that could change how the world fights infections. The discovery? Silvanex: a next-generation antimicrobial technology that could be the answer to drug-resistant "superbugs."
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">The Problem With Traditional Antimicrobials</h1>
"Most traditional antimicrobials — whether they're antibiotics, antifungals or even silver-based products — eventually lose effectiveness because bacteria and fungi evolve resistance over time. That's how we ended up in the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) crisis we're facing today," Lambert explains.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria <a href="https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/antimicrobial-resistance">now kill</a> more than 1.27 million people annually, with drug-resistant infections contributing to nearly 4.95 million deaths worldwide in 2019 alone. If left unaddressed, AMR <a href="https://www.worldbank.org/en/topic/health/brief/antimicrobial-resistance-amr">could lead</a> to more than 39 million deaths between 2025 and 2050. 
The economic consequences are just as severe. The World Bank <a href="https://www.worldbank.org/en/topic/health/publication/drug-resistant-infections-a-threat-to-our-economic-future">estimates</a> AMR could result in a GDP loss of $1 trillion to $3.4 trillion annually by 2030, with global healthcare costs rising by an additional $1 trillion by 2050. If no action is taken, AMR <a href="https://www.worldbank.org/en/news/press-release/2016/09/18/by-2050-drug-resistant-infections-could-cause-global-economic-damage-on-par-with-2008-financial-crisis">could cause</a> a 3.8% reduction in global GDP, <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4967260/">costing the world economy</a> up to $100 trillion by mid-century.

The rise of drug-resistant infections like methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Candida auris has intensified the urgency for new treatments. 
Candida auris, in particular, has become one of the most concerning fungal threats in modern healthcare, as some strains have become resistant to all available antifungal treatments. "With antimicrobial resistance, silver-based products just aren't cutting it anymore," Lambert says. "They don't have the clinical efficacy needed to protect people from infections."
Silver, once considered a promising antimicrobial alternative, also has limitations. It's widely used in wound dressings, medical textiles, and coatings, but its effectiveness is modest at best. For years, researchers have been trying to find ways to enhance silver's antimicrobial effects without increasing its toxicity. That's exactly what Andira Pharmaceuticals set out to do.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">A Triple-Synergy Solution</h1>
Rather than relying on silver alone, Andira Pharmaceuticals took a different approach. Silvanex is based on a "triple-synergy" mechanism, combining silver with two cannabinoids: cannabichromene (CBC) and cannabigerol (CBG).
What makes it revolutionary is that instead of just slightly improving silver's antimicrobial properties, the combination increases silver's effectiveness by 800%.
"When you take cannabinoids by themselves, they may be effective against some types of bacteria or fungi, but not others. That makes them unreliable as stand-alone antimicrobial agents," Lambert explains. "But when combined with silver in the right way, the synergy makes silver exponentially more effective."

Silvanex has shown potent antimicrobial activity against a wide range of harmful bacteria — including drug-resistant superbugs.
The discovery didn't stop there. Silvanex also proved highly effective against fungal pathogens, an area where traditional antimicrobials have struggled.
"One of the most dangerous fungal infections today is Candida auris. The situation is so bad that certain strains are now resistant to all available antifungal drug treatments. That's why the CDC advises clinicians to consider investigational treatments for pan-resistant cases," Lambert adds.
But Silvanex changed that equation.
"Unlike conventional antimicrobials, it not only kills infectious microbes but may also help prevent resistance from developing," Lambert says.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">A New Standard For Infection Control</h1>
With the stakes as high as they are, the challenge wasn't just creating a more effective antimicrobial; it was ensuring Silvanex could be safely and efficiently brought to market. Unlike traditional silver-based antimicrobials that require high doses to work, Silvanex achieves superior efficacy at significantly lower concentrations.
That distinction is critical, as excessive silver exposure has been linked to <a href="https://journals.cambridgemedia.com.au/wpr/volume-28-number-4/silver-based-wound-dressings-current-issues-and-future-developments-treating-bacterial-infections">delayed wound healing</a> and <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-022-26856-x">cytotoxic effects</a>.
Andira Pharmaceuticals' approach to drug development was both rigorous and deliberate.
"We're not just trying to introduce another antimicrobial," Lambert says. "We're developing something that healthcare providers can trust — something that works better than anything currently available and can be integrated into standard medical practice."

Silvanex's formulation is optimized for topical use, making it a strong candidate for wound care, surgical site infection prevention and hospital-acquired infection control. Unlike traditional antibiotics, which must be administered systemically and face significant challenges related to drug resistance, Silvanex is designed to act locally, right at the site of infection.
This topical approach also addresses a major limitation of cannabinoids in antimicrobial research: they lose their antimicrobial properties entirely once they enter the bloodstream.
"Cannabinoids lose their antimicrobial properties entirely once they enter systemic circulation," Lambert explains. "That's why Silvanex will always be used as a topical treatment. The synergy between silver, CBC and CBG remains intact in external applications, where we see the full benefit of its infection-fighting potential."
In the fight against hospital-acquired infections, this represents a major leap forward.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Turning Innovation Into Medicine: Silvanex's Road To Market</h1>
Bringing a novel drug to market requires more than just groundbreaking science: it demands years of rigorous testing, regulatory approvals and a strategic path to commercialization.
Andira is now preparing to advance Silvanex through the next critical phases of development, starting with clinical trials. The company's pipeline of Silvanex product candidates includes a topical drug formulated as an anti-infective cream, as well as antimicrobial wound dressings. According to Lambert, the wound dressings are on track for regulatory submission as medical devices, which, if approved, offers a faster pathway to market compared to new drug applications.

"Right now, we're about a year away from entering Phase 1 clinical trials, and our goal is to progress through clinical development as efficiently as possible," Lambert says. "We've conducted extensive preclinical testing and have seen promising results against multiple drug-resistant pathogens, including some on the FDA's QIDP list. While there's no guarantee, we believe Silvanex has strong potential to qualify."
With strategic partnerships in the works, Andira is positioning Silvanex not just as an incremental improvement, but as a potential paradigm shift in antimicrobial treatment.
