The market continues to see an uptick in volatility while simultaneously printing higher stock prices. This usually means there is a topping formation in progress. That said, financials continue to move constructively northward and the heels of earnings for American Express (AXP) take place on Friday morning.
So today we're looking at a bullish trade on AXP's earnings.
Today's trade will be a long call butterfly spread. When we position with long call butterfly spreads, we attempt to collect a premium that is generated by a strong move in the underlying stock's chart. We offset the cost of the long calls into earnings with a short call spread that mitigates some of the risk premium incurred taking the position
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Trade structure – the long call butterfly with a twist</h2>
The long call butterfly consists of two spreads – a long call spread and a short call spread that attempts to capture the potential upward spike in price from the earnings release. To help pay for this position we will sell a short call spread to collect a premium.
AXP's stock price is currently range bound with resistance near $340 and support near $300. With that in mind, here's the trade:
<ul>
<li>Buy to open 1 AXP 21 Feb 330 calls</li>
<li>Sell to open 1 AXP 21 Feb 340 calls</li>
<li>Buy to open 1 AXP 21 Feb 345 calls</li>
</ul>
At this writing the debit cost is $1.90 and the maximum profit will be the distance between the first two strikes (330 and 340), which is $10, less the cost of $1.90 = $8.10 or $810. Notice, however, that the short call spread is only $5 wide, so if the price action shoots past $345, we would still have $5 from the first spread, less the cost – and this would still deliver over 150% gains.
Our maximum risk is simply the cost of the spread – if the price action fades, or does not rise past $330, we will lose the cost of the debit.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Trade Management</h2>
The strategy result provides three ways to exit the trade:
<ol>
<li>Sell the butterfly once it gets to an acceptable profit margin for you. I customarily look for 150%-300% profit for these kinds of trades in the current environment of volatility.</li>
<li>Sell the butterfly once it hits a loss threshold as determined by personal risk – this will happen with extreme movement. I customarily look at about 70% though depending on my size.</li>
<li>Ssell the butterfly into the week before expiration, if all is going well and you have decided to hold the trade into closer to the end of expiration (I have had many a trade go sideways taking it down to the wire and not capturing gains, so I do not advise this).</li>

How to Trade Tomorrow's Earnings

Cathie Wood, the founder of asset management firm&nbsp;Ark Invest, expressed uncertainty about the utility of President Donald Trump&#8217;s coin on Wednesday, adding that her company has avoided memecoin investments.
What Happened: During an interview with Bloomberg TV, Wood labeled the launch of Official Trump&nbsp;(TRUMP)&nbsp;as part of a &#8220;memecoin moment,&#8221; but only time will tell if it becomes useful in some way.
&#8220;I mean there is speculation that you&#8217;ll get to meet President Trump as one of the utilities of owning this coin. I don&#8217;t know if that&#8217;s the case or not. But so far, we don&#8217;t know of much utility for this coin, except that it is a meme coin of President Trump,&#8221; the veteran investor said.
That said, Wood noted that the launch could potentially symbolize the &#8220;next phase of&nbsp;the cryptocurrency revolution.&#8221;

These AI agents could contribute to some of the job displacement the WEF highlighted. 
Oracle offers more than 50 role-based AI agents within its Oracle Fusion Cloud Applications Suite which can <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/ORCL#:~:text=Oracle%20AI%20Agents%20Help%20Sales%20Teams%20Create%20More%20Meaningful%20Customer%20Connections">perform tasks</a> in the areas of finance, sales, customer service and marketing. Salesforce's Agentforce is an AI platform that enables companies and organizations <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/01/42917603/salesforce-empowers-retailers-with-ai-to-boost-efficiency-and-sales">to build</a> customized autonomous AI agents for various business functions.
Experts predict AI agents will grow to become commonplace in the near term.

AI, AI Agents Will Create 'Unprecedented Opportunities And Profound Risks,' World Economic Forum Says

The U.S. greenback has seen a stellar run so far this year, with&nbsp;Invesco DB US Dollar Index Bullish Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>) logging a 2.8% return. However, things may go downhill in the coming days, with the Fed expected to cut rates in September.

<h2>Market Forecast: Dollar Weakening Against Yen</h2>

Geoffrey Yu, senior EMEA market strategist at BNY, shared his outlook on the U.S. dollar&#39;s performance against major currencies, telling CNBC that the dollar may continue to weaken against the Japanese yen through the end of the year. This is especially true given that the Bank of Japan is on a policy tightening mode, which could strengthen the yen against the greenback.

On Wednesday, the dollar was trading 0.6% higher at 146.09 yen around 11:50 AM London time. This followed a dip below the significant 145-yen level for the first time since Jan. 6, indicating a recent surge in the yen and a continued unwinding of the yen-funded carry trade, the CNBC article noted.

<h2>Carry Trade Explained</h2>

Carry trades involve borrowing in a currency with low interest rates and investing in higher-yielding assets. This strategy has been popular due to expectations that the Japanese yen will remain weak and Japanese interest rates will remain low. However, recent interest rate hikes from the Bank of Japan have strengthened the yen, contributing to a global market sell-off.

<h2>Outlook for Yen Carry Trade Unwinding</h2>

The yen carry trade began to unwind earlier this month as Bank of Japan rate hikes bolstered the currency. Although some stabilization has occurred, strategists, including Yu, believe the unwinding process is ongoing.

Given the above-mentioned facts, the bearish trend in the greenback is likely to continue, at least in the near term.

<h2>ETFs to Buy for Weakening Dollar</h2>

So, investors looking to play the weakening U.S. dollar could consider these exchange-traded funds (ETFs):

<h3>Inverse Dollar Fund</h3>

Needless to say, if the dollar is falling, a short position on the currency would result in negative returns. Invesco DB US Dollar Index Bearish Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UDN#NYSE">UDN</a>) should thus be avoided.

<h3>Commodities: Gold</h3>

The decline in the U.S. dollar is good for raw materials and commodities as these are priced in the U.S. dollar. SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>) has gained 21.7% this year due to a sudden dollar weakness and geopolitical tensions.

Large-Cap ETFs

Since large-cap stocks have greater foreign exposure, the weakening dollar is positive for this capitalization. BofA Global Research once estimated that every 10% drop in the U.S. dollar translates into about a 3% boost to S&amp;P earnings. SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) should thus be closely watched.

<h3>Small-Cap ETFs</h3>

Since small caps are closely tied to the U.S. economy and do not get affected by a rising dollar due to their limited foreign exposure, iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>) could be a weak pick now, in this context.

<h3>Dollar-Denominated Bond ETFs</h3>

Investors seeking EM exposure amid a falling dollar should not consider dollar-denominated EM bond ETFs. These funds invest in sovereign debt from a variety of emerging nations via U.S. dollar-denominated securities. Notably, the debt route is less risky than equities. Moreover, most emerging markets have low debt levels compared to the developed countries.

SPDR Bloomberg Emerging Markets USD Bond ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EMHC#NYSE">EMHC</a>) is one such ETF. The underlying Bloomberg Emerging USD Bond Core Index measures the performance of fixed-rate US dollar-denominated debt issued by sovereign and quasi-sovereign emerging market issuers. The fund yields 5.39% annually and is up 2.7% this year.
