Shares of Second Sight Medical Products Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/eyes#NASDAQ">EYES</a>) surged more than 30 percent on Wednesday after the <a href="http://investors.secondsight.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=897871">company announced</a> successful implants of its Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System in France.

	Argus II is the first approved retinal prosthesis system in the world. The system works to restore sight to patients who have lost their vision due to retinal pigmentosa (RP), a rare hereditary disease.

	Last year, Argus II became the first medical device to become the recipient of Forfait Innovation, a French program that covers the cost of implantation and hospital fees for patients receiving the implants. According to Second Sight&rsquo;s press release, 36 French patients stand to benefit from the devise and the Forfait Innovation program.

	There are an estimated 1.2 million people worldwide suffering from RP. The prosthesis is approved in the U.S., Canada, Europe and Saudi Arabia, and Second Sight is currently in the process of testing improved software for the device.

	After the big pop on Wednesday, shares of Second Sight are now trading more than 60 percent above the company&rsquo;s December 2014 IPO price.

Second Sight's 30% Jump Boosts Several Peers

Escalon Medical Corp. (Nasdaq: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/esmc#Nasdaq">ESMC</a>) today announced that it has entered into a distribution agreement with Long Beach, NY based BiCOM Inc., to distribute its transpalpebral "Diaton" tonometer. The Diaton tonometer will be featured alongside the Company's new VuPad™ ultrasound system at the Annual Symposium and Congress of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) in Boston, April 25-29 (booth 873).

Escalon Medical (Nasdaq: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/esmc#Nasdaq">ESMC</a>) today announced that Richard J. DePiano, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, will retire from day to day operations effective September 25, 2013. other consumable materials needed to operate the instruments. JAS specializes
in the manufacture of a broad range of liquid stable, diagnostics chemistry
reagents used in IVD tests. Many of these reagents are single vial stable,
which offer ease of use, increased speed of results and extended on-board
stability. The sales price was $6,500,000 in cash.

Escalon Medical Corp.'s (Nasdaq: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/esmc#Nasdaq">ESMC</a>) subsidiary, Drew Scientific, Inc., today announced that it has successfully completed the outsourced manufacturing of its HbA1c instruments and recently received the first lot of instruments for sale. Drew has also identified an outsourcing partner for its hematology instruments and anticipates outsourced hematology units being available for sale by the summer of 2012. Drew will continue to produce certain hematology instruments until its partner is able to deliver units in the summer of 2012. 

 The outsourcing initiative started in 2011 was designed to significantly reduce Drew's labor force and eliminate an expensive manufacturing site, reduce inventory carrying costs and streamline operations. We believe the outsourcing initiative implemented thus far will result in annual savings of approximately $1,100,000. Upon completion of the outsourcing initiative we anticipate additional annual savings. 

As previously reported, due to a change in French law that required the consolidation of laboratories in France, Drew's Biocode Hycell division's business model was essentially rendered obsolete. Considerable effort was given to composing an alternate business plan that would have shifted BHH's focus to international sales. Unfortunately, employment laws and regulations in France made it prohibitively expensive to implement any reorganization plan. 

Consequently, Drew's decision not to continue to fund BHH was based on the economic realities of the BHH operation and limited restructuring opportunities. We were disappointed with the lack of reasonable alternatives available to the Company in regards to BHH. Fortunately, revenues of approximately $1,200,000 of high margin legacy Drew diabetes reagents that were being produced by BHH were preserved by production being successfully transferred to our Miami facility without supply interruption to our customers. Historical losses from operations at BHH were ($1,232,904), ($635,952) and ($1,068,040) in 2011, 2010, 2009, respectively. 

Given the lack of acceptable reorganization alternatives these losses were likely to increase. We expect that the insolvency declaration will limit these projected losses from encumbering future earnings. Furthermore, our other clinical diagnostics business unit Escalon Clinical Diagnostics, which includes Drew Scientific and JAS Diagnostics, will continue to service the IVD market. Our plan to consolidate its reagent manufacturing to our Miami facility allows our management's focus to be on adding new product offerings to bring to market through its extensive distribution network.

Escalon Announces That the Restructuring of Its IVD Business is Largely Completed

Escalon Medical Corp. (Nasdaq: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/esmc#Nasdaq">ESMC</a>) announced the refinancing of its debt in connection with the acquisition of certain assets of Biocode Hycel. On December 31, 2008 Drew Scientific, Inc. acquired certain assets of Biocode for $5,900,000 plus acquisition costs of approximately $300,000. The sales price was payable in cash of approximately $324,000 and $5,865,000 in debt from Drew. 

The seller-provided financing was collateralized by certain assets of Biocode. Biocode assets were vertically integrated into the Company's clinical diagnostics business. The seller-provided financing was guaranteed by the Company and required payment over four years.

Under the terms of the debt refinancing, the Company will pay the balance of the seller provided financing of $3,375,000 Euros by the sum per month in euros having an exchange value of $50,000 United States Dollars as of the date of payment. Interest will remain unchanged and will accrue on the outstanding amount of the purchase price at an interest rate of 7% per year on the basis of the actual days elapsed and a 365 day year. 

Upon the sixtieth month after this Amendment, the Company has agreed to pay the balance of the outstanding amount in euros in full in one payment. The refinancing will reduce the current portion of our long-term debt from approximately $2,600,000 to $600,000.
