Below are five stats that sum up trading activity on OTC Markets&rsquo; top two tiers, OTCQX and OTCQB, in 2019:

The number of securities on OTC Markets as of December 31, 2019, up from 10,465 at the end of 2018 and more than the NYSE and Nasdaq combined. That figure includes 489 securities on the OTCQX Best Market, the top tier of OTC Markets typically for more established companies, and 959 on OTCQB Venture Market, the middle tier typically for emerging companies.
<h3>332</h3>
The number of securities added to the OTCQX and OTCQB Markets in 2019, slightly lower from the 369 that were added in 2018. Notable new names include the Grayscale Ethereum Trust (OTCQX: ETHE), an open-ended trust that holds Ethereum, and G5 Entertainment AB (OTCQX: GENTF), a Swedish developer and publisher of mobile games.
The number includes securities that upgraded to different markets during the year. For example, Hugo Boss AG (OTCQX: BOSSY), which upgraded to the OTCQX Market from the Pink market in November, and KushCo Holdings, Inc. (OTCQX: KSHB), which upgraded to OTCQX from the OTCQB Venture Market in May.

The total combined 2019 dollar volume of all the securities on the OTCQX and OTCQB Markets. June was the month with the highest dollar volume on OTCQX, while September was the top month on OTCQB.

Twenty-three of the most-traded companies on OTC Markets in 2019 hail from North America (U.S., Canada, and Mexico), 24 from Europe (France, Germany, Ireland, Spain, Switzerland, The Netherlands, and the United Kingdom), one from South America (Brazil), and two from Australia.

The number of securities that experienced more than $1 billion in dollar trading volume in 2019. Of those 14, four trade on OTCQB and 10 trade on OTCQX.
Swiss pharmaceutical giant Roche was the only security to top the $10 billion volume threshold (approximately $10.95 billion worth of Roche shares traded), while the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust finished second with roughly $9.6 billion worth of shares traded.

Two Dutch companies were among the most actively traded securities on OTC Markets in December, the first time all year that companies from northern Europe had such high trading volume in a given month.
Trading volume in Heineken N.V. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/heiny#OTCQX">HEINY</a>), the makers of Heineken and Amstel beers, and Koninklijke Ahold Delhaize N.V. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/adrny#OTCQX">ADRNY</a>), the owners of U.S. grocery brands Giant, Stop&amp;Shop, Food Lion, and Peapod, substantially increased in December.
Over $140 million worth of Koninklijke Ahold Delhaize shares traded hands last month, a 202% increase from November. That made it December&rsquo;s fifth-most-active security on the OTCQX Market, the premium tier of OTC Markets, behind Roche Holding Ltd (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/rhhby#OTCQX">RHHBY</a>), Danone (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/danoy#OTCQX">DANOY</a>), Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (BTC) (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gbtc#OTCQX">GBTC</a>), and Imperial Brands PLC (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/imbby#OTCQX">IMBBY</a>).
Meanwhile, Heineken had over $101 million worth of its shares trade in December, a 183% increase from November. Not only did that make it the seventh-most traded security on OTCQX for the month, but it accounted for nearly 20% of the company&rsquo;s total 2019 trading volume.
The increase in trading volume in the two Dutch companies comes as OTC Markets has focused more closely on the region.
&ldquo;The region has tremendous opportunity for us as a business because they have a very vibrant market,&rdquo; said Chris King, senior vice president of international corporate services at OTC Markets. &ldquo;Companies tend to find that they&#39;re somewhat underserved by their local markets, and they look to the U.S. to grow their investor base.&rdquo;
Elsewhere on the OTCQX Market, the top-traded securities with the greatest month-over-month volume increases included mining companies Continental Gold Inc (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/cgoof#OTCQX">CGOOF</a>), Riviera Resources, Inc. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/rvra#OTCQX">RVRA</a>), and Mexican bank Grupo Financiero Banorte, S.A.B. De C.V. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gbooy#OTCQX">GBOOY</a>).
On the OTCQB Best Market, the middle tier of OTC Markets, trading volume in CytoDyn Inc. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/cydy#OTCQX">CYDY</a>), a Canadian biotech company, rose 385% in December, making it the most active security traded on the market apart from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The volume increase coincided with a 293% rally for the stock in December, as shares rose from $0.30 to a high of $1.18.

Cannabis securities continued to be active in November as the sector weathered a significant price correction.
According to data from OTC Markets Group, several cannabis securities experienced volume increases in November, despite lower trading volumes overall due to the Thanksgiving holiday.
Only 15 of the 30 most actively traded securities on the OTCQX Market, the top tier of OTC Markets, experienced month-over-month volume increases in November. But of those 15, five were cannabis companies. Those companies, Trulieve Cannabis Corporation (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tcnnf#OTCQX">TCNNF</a>), Charlotte&rsquo;s Web Holdings Inc. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/cwbhf#OTCQX">CWBHF</a>), Acreage Holdings Inc. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/acrgf#OTCQX">ACRGF</a>), Green Thumb Industries Inc. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gtbif#OTCQX">GTBIF</a>), and Medipharm Labs Corporation (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/medif#OTCQX">MEDIF</a>), experienced an average volume increase of 37% in November compared to October. Trulieve led the way for the group, with a 48% month-over-month increase in volume.
Elsewhere on the market, French bank BNP Paribas (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/bnpqy#OTCQX">BNPQY</a>) and German apparel-maker adidas AG (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/addyy#OTCQX">ADDYY</a>) were the two companies whose securities had the greatest volume increases in November&mdash;their shares changed hands 182% and 105% more than in October respectively.
On the OTCQB Market, preferred shares of Chesapeake Energy Corp. (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/chkdp#OTCQB">CHKDP</a>) experienced by far the biggest month-over-month volume increase, with shares traded 2,644% more in November than in October. The oil and gas company, which has struggled to get its financials in order, announced a series of<a href="https://www.marketwatch.com/story/chesapeake-energys-stock-soars-as-debt-deals-buy-time-for-troubled-company-2019-12-04"> debt financing moves</a> in early December that would appear to give it some much-needed financial flexibility.
Roughly $20 million worth of CHKDP traded last month&mdash;approximately half of the security&rsquo;s total year-to-date dollar volume. Another preferred share class, CHKDG, saw its volume increase 217% last month as well.
Other OTCQB securities with dramatic volume increases in November include Q BioMed Inc. (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/qbio#OTCQB">QBIO</a>) (volume increased 840%), Alpine 4 Technologies Ltd. (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/alpp#OTCQB">ALPP</a>) (337%), John Marshall Bancorp, Inc. (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/jmsb#OTCQB">JMSB</a>) (237%), and Nextech AR Solutions Corp. (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/nexcf#OTCQB">NEXCF</a>) (211%).
Overall, these were the 10 most actively traded securities on the OTCQX and OTCQB Markets in November.

Dollar trading volume on OTC Markets topped $29 billion in October, approximately a 4.5% increase from September.
For the month, total dollar volume on the OTCQX Market, the top tier of OTC Markets, was approximately $4.5 billion, down about 8% from September. Dollar volume on the OTCQB Market, the second tier of OTC Markets, however, was up dramatically, exceeding $3.5 billion, a 227% month-over-month increase from September.
As far as individual securities, the biggest volume gainers were spread throughout different countries and industries, showing no clear trend.
The security with the greatest month-over-month gains in dollar volume on OTCQX (in the top 30 most actively traded securities) was the <a href="https://www.otcmarkets.com/files/FAQ-F-Shares.pdf">F share</a> of Roche Holding Ltd (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/rhhvf#OTCQX">RHHVF</a>), which increased 272% in October with $76 million worth of shares trading. That represents a dramatic gain for a security with only $308 million in dollar volume year-to-date.
Nearly $200 million worth of shares of AngloAmerican plc (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ngloy#OTCQX">NGLOY</a>) changed hands in October, a 265% monthly increase, <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/ad12a9fe-f3f9-11e9-b018-3ef8794b17c6">as the company closed in</a> on an untapped copper mine in Peru. Traders were excited enough to make Anglo the fourth most-active security on OTCQX in October, the most actively traded month it&rsquo;s had all year.
French advertising giant Publicis Groupe S.A. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/pubgy#OTCQX">PUBGY</a>) experienced a 144% increase in dollar volume, as the company <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-10-10/french-ad-group-publicis-cuts-revenue-forecast-again">warned of lower&nbsp;revenue</a> for the year. German telecom company Deutsche Telekom AG (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/dtegy#OTCQX">DTEGY</a>) and Koninklijke Ahold Delhaize N.V. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/adrny#OTCQX">ADRNY</a>), the Dutch multinational retailer, experienced dollar volume increases of 126% and 113% respectively in October.
On the OTCQB Market, the largest gainer in dollar volume was Astea International Inc. (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/atea#OTCQB">ATEA</a>), which jumped after IFS, an enterprise applications vendor based in London, announced they were acquiring the company.

These Were The Most Active Securities On OTC Markets In October

A British tobacco company, Dutch paint company, California-based dermatological company, and Maryland-based regional bank were among the securities that experienced the largest trading volume increases in September.
Nearly 900 million shares&mdash;$4.9 billion worth&mdash;traded hands on the OTCQX Best Market, the top tier of OTC Markets, in September. Of the 30 most-active securities for the month, there were four that experienced dramatic volume spikes.
Volume in Revere Bank (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/revb#OTCQX">REVB</a>) spiked heavily on Sept 24, the day the company announced it had been acquired by Sandy Spring Bancorp (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/sasr#NASDAQ">SASR</a>) in a deal valued at $460.7 million. For the month, $34 million worth of Revere shares were traded, compared to just over $1 million in August.
Akzo Nobel N.V. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/akzoy#OTCQX">AKZOY</a>) had a 171% increase month-over-month, from $18 million worth of shares changing hands in August to $49 million doing so in September. The volume increase doesn&rsquo;t appear to be the result of a news catalyst, but commentary throughout the month from analysts at Bank of America - Merrill Lynch, Credit Suisse, and Morgan Stanley may have driven investor focus. The company also <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-swC923aQg&amp;feature=youtu.be">recently reaffirmed</a> its guidance of 15% return on sales by 2020.
Avita Medical Ltd. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/avmxy#OTCQX">AVMXY</a>) shares experienced over $31 million in dollar volume in September, a 120% increase from August. This was due mostly to a pair of key news items: a Sept. 6 announcement that the company had been added to the S&amp;P 300 Index, and a Sept. 30 announcement it was graduating to the Nasdaq under the ticker RCEL.
Imperial Brands PLC (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/imbby#OTCQX">IMBBY</a>) experienced a 104% increase in dollar volume last month, from approximately $65 million worth of shares traded in August to approximately $134 million worth of shares traded in September. Traders were undoubtedly taking advantage of regulatory headwinds, as governments have begun taking a closer look at vaping. The changing picture has also prompted volume spikes in industry peers Altria Group (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/mo#NYSE">MO</a>) and Philip Morris International (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/pm#NYSE">PM</a>).
On the OTCQB Venture Market, share classes of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac accounted for 22 of the 30 most actively traded securities in September.
The common and preferred shares of the two government-sponsored entities experienced huge volume spikes beginning on Sept. 6, when the <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/09/06/fannie-mae-freddie-mac-shares-tumble-as-treasury-overhaul-plan-disappoints.html">Dept. of Treasury released a long-awaited 53-page report</a> on their plan to return the two companies to the private markets. Though the market&rsquo;s initial reaction to the report was quite negative&mdash;shares in both companies fell approximately 8% that day&mdash;they later rebounded on increased optimism that the conservatorship could end.
Included in the top 10 Most Active OTCQB securities was CV Sciences, Inc. (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/cvsi#OTCQB">CVSI</a>) with $38 million worth of shares trading in the quarter. The company got a boost along with the rest of the cannabis sector after the Sept. 25 passage of the SAFE Banking Act.
Great Bear Resources Ltd (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gtbdf#OTCQX">GTBDF</a>) was also among the most active names on OTCQB after the company reported multiple gold discoveries in the Red Lake district of Ontario. They also announced a graduation to OTCQX on Sept. 25.
Overall these were the top 10 most active securities on both markets in September. Roche Holding, Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (BTC), Charlotte&rsquo;s Web, and Imperial Brands&mdash;the four most-trade securities year-to-date on OTCQX&mdash;were the most-traded in September.

These Were The Most Active Securities On OTC Markets In September

More than 4 billion shares&mdash;or $7.7 billion&mdash;exchanged hands on the OTCQX Best Market and OTCQB Venture Market in July. These were the most active individual securities on each of the top tiers of OTC Markets.&nbsp;
<h3>OTCQX Market&nbsp;</h3>
1) Grayscale Bitcoin Trust&nbsp;
For the third month in a row, the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (BTC) (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gbtc#OTCQX">GBTC</a>) was the most actively traded security on OTCQX, with just under $2 billion worth of shares traded during the month. At $6.2 billion in dollar volume, GBTC is now the most actively traded security on the entire market in 2019.&nbsp;
2) Roche
Swiss healthcare giant Roche Holding Ltd (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/rhhby#OTCQX">RHHBY</a>) was the second most active security on OTCQX in July, with $716 million worth of shares changing hands. Though that figure was down month-over-month, Roche&rsquo;s $5.7 billion worth of shares traded to date make it the second most active security on the market this year.&nbsp;
3) Infineon Technologies
Though Infineon Technologies AG (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ifnny#OTCQX">IFNNY</a>) is typically one of the more active names on OTCQX, it&rsquo;s unusual to see it so high on this list.&nbsp;The German semiconductor company saw its dollar volume increase 104% to $286 million in July after the company agreed to buy Cypress Semiconductor for $23.85 per share.&nbsp;Infineon&rsquo;s year-to-date dollar volume ranks below names such as Curaleaf Holdings Inc. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/curlf#OTCQX">CURLF</a>) and BNP Paribas (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/bnpqy#OTCQX">BNPQY</a>).&nbsp;
4) Charlotte&rsquo;s Web&nbsp;
Charlotte&rsquo;s Web Holdings Inc. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/cwbhf#OTCQX">CWBHF</a>) saw its dollar volume rise 87% from June to July. At $912 million worth of shares traded to date, Charlotte&rsquo;s Web is now the most actively traded cannabis stock on OTC Markets.&nbsp;
5) Danone
Another frequent security among the most active names on OTCQX, $194 million worth of shares of French food company Danone (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/danoy#OTCQX">DANOY</a>) traded in July. The stock was buoyed by the company&rsquo;s strong earnings report, specifically a surprisingly strong 2.5% increase in baby food sales in China.&nbsp;
<h3>OTCQB Market</h3>
On the OTCQB Venture Market, varying share classes of Freddie Mae and Fannie Mac were once again the most actively traded during the month. Year-to-date, four share classes of the government-sponsored entities have traded more than $1 billion worth of shares: Fannie Mae (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fnmas#OTCQB">FNMAS</a>) (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fnma#OTCQB">FNMA</a>), and Freddie Mac (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fmckj#OTCQB">FMCKJ</a>) (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fmcc#OTCQB">FMCC</a>).&nbsp;
One share class of Freddie Mac (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fmcck#OTCQB">FMCCK</a>) saw $17 million worth of shares trade in July, a 9,000% month-over-month increase in activity.&nbsp;

Other securities that experienced large dollar volume increases in July were United Cannabis Corp. (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/cnab#OTCQB">CNAB</a>), which saw its dollar volume increase 1,407%<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cannabis/19/07/14081727/united-cannabis-announces-cbd-oil-contract-worth-up-to-42m"> after the company announced</a> it was awarded a contract for its CBD oil worth up to $42 million, and Green Growth Brands Inc. (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ggbxf#OTCQB">GGBXF</a>), whose volume rose 127%. With the second half of 2019 well underway, let&rsquo;s take a look back at 10 numbers that defined the activity on OTC Markets through the first six months of the year.&nbsp;
<h3>1)&nbsp;187</h3>
The number of securities that joined the OTCQX and OTCQB Markets in the first half of the year&mdash;60 joined OTCQX, and 133 joined OTCQB. This falls in line with last year&rsquo;s rate of 369 new securities for the year.&nbsp;
<h3>2)&nbsp;62%</h3>
The percentage of new companies located outside the United States. Just over half of the new securities in 2019 are Canadian, nearly all of which are cross-traded on the TSX, TSX Venture Exchange, or Canadian Securities Exchange.&nbsp;
Companies from Australia, Brazil, China, Israel, The Netherlands, and the UK also joined the OTCQX and OTCQB Markets so far this year.&nbsp;

The First Half Of 2019 On OTC Markets: By The Numbers

There are over 10,000 securities traded on the OTC Markets, 1,430 of which trade on the market&rsquo;s top two tiers, OTCQX and OTCQB.
But when it comes to the most actively traded of those securities, there is a clear top eight.
As of the end of June, there were eight securities&mdash;four on OTCQX, four on OTCQB&mdash;that had traded more than $1 billion in volume in 2019. No other security has traded more than $900,000 of volume.
Those securities, Roche Holding Ltd, Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (BTC), Imperial Brands PLC, Danone, and two share classes each of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, combined to trade nearly $19 billion worth of shares in the first half, equivalent to approximately 5% of the total dollar volume traded across OTC Markets in 2018.
Within this group of eight, the top two most-traded names are outliers for their trading activity. Together, Roche and the GBTC traded over $9 billion worth of shares in the first half&mdash;$5 billion for Roche, $4 billion for GBTC&mdash;making these two securities by far the most active on the market.
<h3>The Most Active Securities In June</h3>
June was in-line with previous months in terms of the most active securities on the OTCQX and OTCQB Markets.
Familiar names like Infineon Technologies, BASF, Grayscale Ethereum Classic Trust (ETC), and BNP Paribas all made the top 10 on OTCQX. As did CV Sciences, the only non-Fannie/Freddie security to exceed $200 million in dollar trading volume on the OTCQB in 2019.
The biggest volume gainer for the month among the 30 most active OTCQX securities was KushCo Holdings, Inc. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/kshb#OTCQX">KSHB</a>), over $34 million worth of KushCo shares traded in June according to OTC Markets Group.

The Most Actively Traded Securities On OTC Markets In June

U.S. equities spent April climbing back to near all-time highs, with the VIX reaching its lowest level since early October 2018.&nbsp;
And yet, the most recent dialogue escalation&nbsp;between the U.S. and China regarding trade tariffs put an end, at least temporarily, to what had been a period of relative stability following December&rsquo;s volatility.
Even still, it&rsquo;s worth paying attention to where investors were putting their money in April&mdash;particularly in the OTC Markets, a market that caters to both international and institutional investors. These were the securities with the greatest month-over-month dollar volume increases in April on the top tier of the OTC Markets&mdash;OTCQX.
1. JBS S.A. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/jbsay#OTCQX">JBSAY</a>): 292 percent increase
The Brazilian meat processing company had its dollar volume increase from $12 million to just under $48 million in April. For the first time since July 2015, shares of the company are above $10.
2. Cresco Labs Inc. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/crlbf#OTCQX">CRLBF</a>): 239 percent increase
The Chicago-based cannabis MSO (multi-state operator) had its dollar volume increase from $36 million to $123 million in April. Much of that trading occurred on April 3 and April 24, as 843,000 and 796,000 shares changed hands on those two days respectively.
3. Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (BTC) (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gbtc#OTCQX">GBTC</a>): 238 percent increase
A familiar name to the most-active OTCQX securities, the GBTC saw a dollar volume increase of $184 million to $621 million in April. The GBTC is also the second most-traded security on the OTCQX Best Market so far in 2019.
4. Avita Medical Ltd. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/avmxy#OTCQX">AVMXY</a>): 191 percent&nbsp;increase
Dollar volume in the regenerative medicine company rose from $26 million to $77 million in April, the majority of activity happening April 8-10.
This followed the company&rsquo;s presentation of a patient study at the American Burn Association&rsquo;s annual meeting, in which they showed patients using the RECELL System experienced 98 percent of wounds healed within four weeks after treatment. The presentation was named &quot;Best of the Best Abstract&quot; out of more than 500 abstract submissions to the ABA meeting, and shares rallied to an all-time high.
5. Anglo American plc (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ngloy#OTCQX">NGLOY</a>): 140 percent increase
The British mining company had its volume rise from $46 million to $111 million in April as shares rose above $14 for the first time. Anglo is a global leader in platinum group metals and diamonds, with significant interests in coal, base and ferrous metals, and an industrial minerals business.
6. Imperial Brands plc (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/imbby#OTCQX">IMBBY</a>): 130 percent increase
The tobacco company continued its trend as one of the most active OTCQX securities in April. Dollar volume in the security went from $67 million to $155 million in the month, and it is now the fourth-most traded security on the market in 2019.

These Were The Securities With The Biggest Dollar Volume Increases On OTC Markets In April

Even in what has been a notoriously high-volume sector, March was a particularly strong month for cannabis securities that trade on OTC Markets.&nbsp;
Six of the top 10 most active securities in March on the OTCQX Best Market, the top trading tier, were cannabis companies.
Investors were likely cheering the bevy of positive headlines that came out of the industry throughout the month. Despite New Jersey canceling a vote on whether to legalize the drug, cannabis took a big step forward in March with the SAFE Banking Act. The bill, which would allow financial institutions to work with marijuana businesses, advanced to markup in the House Financial Services Committee. This is the furthest a cannabis-related banking bill has ever advanced in Congress.&nbsp;
On top of that, legendary hedge fund manager Nelson Peltz gave one of the biggest endorsements of cannabis investing to date when he joined the board of Aurora Cannabis Inc. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/acb#NYSE">ACB</a>).&nbsp;
The top 10 most active securities on the OTCQX and OTCQB Markets are listed below. What&rsquo;s interesting is how large the month-over-month increases in volume were for some of these securities. Curaleaf Holdings Inc. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/curlf#OTCQX">CURLF</a>) had nearly $179 million in dollar volume in March, a 1,023 percent increase from February.&nbsp;
Green Organic Dutchman Holdings Ltd. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tgodf#OTCQX">TGODF</a>) traded over $134 million in dollar volume, a 107 percent increase from February. Additionally, CV Sciences, Inc. (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/cvsi#OTCQB">CVSI</a>) saw a 168 percent month-over-month increase in volume on the OTCQB Venture Market.&nbsp;
Rounding out the most active securities on the OTCQX Market, Organigram Holdings, Inc. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ogrmf#OTCQX">OGRMF</a>), Charlotte&rsquo;s Web Holdings Inc. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/cwbhf#OTCQX">CWBHF</a>), Acreage Holdings Inc. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/acrgf#OTCQX">ACRGF</a>), and Medmen Enterprises Inc. Cannabis isn&rsquo;t the only industry represented among the most active OTCQX and OTCQB securities in March. As we&rsquo;ve seen in past months, multi-nationals like Roche Holding Ltd (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/rhhby#OTCQX">RHHBY</a>), BNP Paribas (OTCQX: BNPQ), and Danone (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/danoy#OTCQX">DANOY</a>) were among the most-active securities for the month, as was the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (BTC) (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gbtc#OTCQX">GBTC</a>).

Cannabis Securities Trading on The OTC Markets Saw Dramatic Volume Increases In March

As we highlighted last month, preferred shares of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cannabis/19/02/13122454/fannie-mae-and-freddie-mac-saw-massive-increases-in-trading-volume-i">experienced dramatic increases</a> in dollar trading volume to start 2019. That was not the case in February however, as dollar volume in the mortgage liquidity providers receded back to normal levels.
While different share classes of Fannie and Freddie did occupy seven of the top 12 most-active securities on the OTCQB Venture market in February, they all experienced month-over-month declines in dollar trading volume compared to January. Dollar volume in shares of Fannie Mae (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fnmas#OTCQB">FNMAS</a>), Fannie Mae (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fnma#OTCQB">FNMA</a>), Freddie Mac (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fmckj#OTCQB">FMCKJ</a>), and Freddie Mac (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fmcc#OTCQB">FMCC</a>) fell an average of 57 percent month-over-month.
This trend continued across many of the largest securities on OTC Markets in February, particularly among large multinationals. Of the most actively traded securities on the OTCQX Best Market (the top tier of OTC Markets), international conglomerates Roche Holding Ltd (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/rhhby#OTCQX">RHHBY</a>), adidas AG (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/addyy#OTCQX">ADDYY</a>), Danone (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/danoy#OTCQX">DANOY</a>), and BNP Paribas (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/bnpqy#OTCQX">BNPQY</a>) all experienced lower dollar volume in February compared to January.
That&rsquo;s not to say there are not OTCQX securities that didn&rsquo;t experience volume increases in the month. Dollar volume in Mexican banking group Grupo Financiero Banorte, S.A.B. De C.V. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gbooy#OTCQX">GBOOY</a>) increased 125 percent in February, and Dutch health multinational Royal DSM NV (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/rdsmy#OTCQX">RDSMY</a>) rose 109 percent.
Interestingly, the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (BTC) (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gbtc#OTCQX">GBTC</a>) and Organigram Holdings, Inc. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ogrmf#OTCQX">OGRMF</a>)&mdash;two securities that represent emerging industries&mdash;saw increases of 9 and 56 percent in February, suggesting investors had more of a risk-on appetite during the month.
Similarly, three cannabis companies on the OTCQB Venture Market saw massive dollar volume increases in February. Khiron Life Sciences Corp. (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/khrnf#OTCQB">KHRNF</a>), Leafbuyer Technologies, Inc. (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/lbuy#OTCQB">LBUY</a>), and Plus Products Inc. (OTQB: <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/plprf">PLPRF</a>) saw dollar volume increases of 277 percent, 157 percent, and 810 percent respectively.
Overall, volume was down among most of the larger names on OTCQB. Of the 10 most actively traded securities on the OTCQB Market in February, only NaturalShrimp Incorporated (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/shmp#OTCQB">SHMP</a>) (up 1,713 percent), Cleanspark, Inc. (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/clsk#OTCQB">CLSK</a>) (up 916 percent) and one class of Fannie Mae (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fnmat#OTCQB">FNMAT</a>) (up 165 percent) saw their dollar trading volume increase from January.

These Were The Most Actively Traded Stocks On The OTC Markets In February

Trading data from OTC Markets Group shows that shares of government-sponsored entities Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac saw a dramatic increase in dollar trading volume last month.
Common shares of Fannie Mae (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fnma#OTCQB">FNMA</a>) and Freddie Mac (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fmcc#OTCQB">FMCC</a>) experienced 795 percent and 529 percent month-over-month increases in dollar volume respectively. The increase was also seen in preferred shares as well, as some share classes saw month-over-month dollar volume increases of over 1,000 percent.

The mortgage liquidity providers, which have been under conservatorship since 2008, appear to finally be heading towards a viable long-term solution. With Mark Calabria awaiting Senate confirmation to become director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (the agency that oversees the two companies), acting director Joseph Otting has <a href="https://www.marketwatch.com/story/fhfa-head-offers-olive-branch-to-congress-on-privatizing-fannie-mae-freddie-mac-2019-01-30">reportedly told employees and members of Congress</a> that a plan to privatize the companies is in the works.
The comments<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2019/02/04/could-this-congress-white-house-actually-legislate-solution-fannie-mae-freddie-mac-maybe/?utm_term=.96ea73160fc8"> have some </a><a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2019/02/04/could-this-congress-white-house-actually-legislate-solution-fannie-mae-freddie-mac-maybe/?utm_term=.96ea73160fc8">hopeful</a> that Congress is finally heading towards a resolution. In the wake of the end of the Federal Reserve&rsquo;s quantitative easing program, finding a long-term fix for Fannie and Freddie remains the biggest unanswered question from the financial crisis. Since 2012, profits from Fannie and Freddie&mdash;<a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/popular-hedge-fund-bet-on-fannie-and-freddie-is-paying-off-big-this-year-11548504001?mod=article_inline">roughly $292 billion</a>&mdash;have gone into the Treasury, but January&rsquo;s volume increase may indicate that the market expects that arrangement to soon end.
<h3>Other Notable OTC Markets Group Trends From January</h3>
As seen in prior months data, Swiss pharmaceutical giant Roche, German chemical company BASF, and French food conglomerate Danone were among the most actively traded securities on the OTCQX Best Market, the top tier of OTC Markets. Roche remains the most active security, as over $1 billion worth of shares traded hands last month. The Grayscale Bitcoin Trust and French firms BNP Paribas and AXA also maintained their ranks among the market&rsquo;s most-active names.
On the OTCQB Venture Market, the markets&rsquo; middle tier, cannabis companies KushCo, CV Sciences, and MariMed were each among the most actively traded securities after Fannie and Freddie. This marks the fifth month in a row that those three names were among the OTCQB Market&rsquo;s top 10 most active securities.
Overall, these were the top 10 most active securities traded on the OTCQX Best Market in January, according to issuer data.

Fannie Mae And Freddie Mac Saw Massive Increases In Trading Volume In January

In November we wrote about October&rsquo;s <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cannabis/18/11/12698293/the-10-most-actively-traded-otcqx-and-otcqb-stocks-in-october">flight to safety</a> in the OTC Markets, as multi-national conglomerates like Danone (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/danoy#OTCQX">DANOY</a>) and BASF SE (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/basfy#OTCQX">BASFY</a>) saw huge jumps in monthly dollar volume. This was a far cry <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cannabis/18/10/12479029/the-most-actively-traded-over-the-counter-stocks-in-september">from September</a> when most of the securities with the highest dollar volume on the OTCQX and OTCQB markets were in emerging industries like cannabis and crypto.
According to data from OTC Markets, November was a bit of an amalgamation of the previous two months, at least on OTCQX.
<h3>OTCQX</h3>
Four of the top five stocks with the highest dollar volume in November on OTCQX were established corporations. Swiss pharmaceutical giant Roche, French food conglomerate Danone, and Spanish energy company Repsol S.A. all reprised their spots on the list, while German chemical giant BASF SE was replaced by British tobacco firm Imperial Brands.
At the same time, Grayscale-sponsored Bitcoin Investment Trust was the third most-traded security of the month. Over $276,000 traded in November, the most since August.
The changes to the top five signal that while investors are still favoring names in known industries, they are not quite done with sectors like crypto, despite recent headlines.

The story on OTC Markets&rsquo; venture tier, OTCQB, is the popularity of government-sponsored mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Though cannabis stocks represent five of the top 10 most active stocks on the OTCQB last month, the common and preferred shares of Fannie and Freddie represented four of the top five most-active securities. $30.86 billion exchanged hands on the OTC Markets in November, and Fannie and Freddie accounted for just over $500 million of that volume.
This dramatic increase in volume came during a month in which homebuilder and housing sentiment dropped to a <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/12/06/mortgage-rates-drop-to-2-month-low.html">two-year low</a> among consumers thanks to rising interest rates. At the start of November, interest rates for a 30-year fixed mortgage hit an eight-year high of 5.05, though it fell to 4.75 percent at the start of December.
Interestingly the two preferred shares outperformed their common share counterparts. Fannie and Freddie&rsquo;s preferred shares rose 11 and 7 percent respectively in November, compared to common share declines of 12 and 8.5 percent.

These Were The 10 Most Actively Traded OTCQX and OTCQB Securities In November

House Budget Committee Chairman Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) appeared on CNBC's Squawk Box Wednesday morning where he sat in as a guest for over an hour. While on, he talked about corporate tax reform, the federal budget deficit, and the GOP budget plan among other things. 

"If you just passed our budget which everybody said was so dower and was so tough, we would still grow federal spending by 3.4 percent each and every year on average, instead of five percent. That's what the Republican budget does, and it balances the budget," said Ryan. 

"We, with the new baseline, we think that we'd have a $110 billion surplus approximately in the tenth year in our budget. Well on our way to paying off the debt. Ah, the point is, when you do entitlement reform, we're not doing tough, hardcore austerity. These things kick in later on down the road. The kind of spending cuts we're talking about right now aren't even actually cutting spending. It's just slowing the growth of spending increases." 

Ryan went on to say that we've actually done very little in terms of spending cuts, noting that the sequester only deals with a small part of government, only 2% overall, saying that we've actually seen spending increases, and that the deficit has only gone down because of the nearly $62 billion in revenues that unexpectedly came in from Fannie Mae (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fnmas#OTC">FNMAS</a>) and Freddie Mac (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fmckj#OTC">FMCKJ</a>). 

"And go figure, capital gains went from 15 percent to 23.8 [percent] and people, their behavior adjusted to it. Meaning they realized their capital gains in 2012."

Ryan called it a one-off, saying that he's more concerned about the long-term. 

"I'm concerned about the entitlement explosion, the bankruptcy of these programs, and I'm worried that if we just keep putting out head in the sand, then it will be austerity. What we're trying to do is preempt and prevent austerity," said Ryan. 

He said that all of our retirement reforms need to be gradual and phased-in to protect people in and near retirement from any changes. Ryan added that you won't be able to do that if you have the credit markets turn on you.

In regards to the investigation of the Internal Revenue Service scandal hurting the progress of reforms, Ryan joked that they can walk and chew gum at the same time, saying that Republicans must continue to seek out good policy. 

"Our job is to do good policy and oversight at the same time," said Ryan. 

He said that what they've already discovered in the IRS investigations is chilling, saying that he saw it as the arrogance of big government. 

What's good policy to Ryan? He said that all tax rates need to go down at a revenue neutral basis. He noted that in Canada, all business are at a rate of 15%, saying that with United States corporate tax rates at 35 percent, we just can't compete with our neighbor to the North. 

He stated the importance of the U.S. being on the same page with the rest of the world on corporate taxes, saying that we need to make America a place to park capital. Ryan said that right now we're at a complete disadvantage, and that the House Ways and Means Committee is drafting legislation to bring down the corporate tax rate to the global average of 25 percent. He said that lowering the corporate tax rate will probably generate revenue

He then went on to preach about the benefits of being energy independent via more oil drilling and natural gas extraction, saying that exporting these resources would also do wonders for our foreign policy.

Paul Ryan Believes We've Done Little In Terms Of Spending Cuts 

The master of hedge funds, Founder and President of Appaloosa Management David Tepper, sat in on CNBC's Squawk Box for part of Tuesday morning. While on, he gave his outlook on the market and addressed the growing worries around the Federal Reserve tapering back. 

"I'm definitely bullish. I mean look, you ever see the movie Cousin Vinny?"

Tepper went on to paraphrase the end of the film My Cousin Vinny , in which Joe Pesci's character, a lawyer, makes an argument that sums up such an overwhelming amount of evidence in his clients' defense that the prosecution declares "Case dismissed." 

Tepper said that's what the economy is like right now.

"The economy is getting better. Autos are better, housing is better, it continues to improve, they can't find enough people to work in housing is the only thing holding it back right now," said Tepper. 

He then went on to talk about the current worry in the market over tapering. Tepper said that they looked at how the markets run, noting that the numbers are amazing. He mentioned that the Fed is going to purchase $85 billion of treasuries and mortgages a month. He stretched that out over a year, saying that $85 billion times 12 months is over a trillion, or $500 billion over six months. 

"What's happened, and what's really truly amazing, is that if you look at the numbers over the next six months, okay, because of tax increases, because of budget cuts, because of growth in the economy, and also because of Fannie Mae (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fnmas#OTC">FNMAS</a>) paying back money to the government and Freddie Mac (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fmckj#OTC">FMCKJ</a>) soon to pay back money to the government, the deficit over the next six months is shrinking massively," said Tepper. 

He said that the next six month's deficit is going to be well under a $100 billion, probably closer to $85 billion.

"Which means, and this is an important thing, for those people that say we've been financing the deficit, and we really have, you know, well, the Fed will never say that, and so this is probably a pretty big issue, we have over $500 billion we're going to buy with the next six months, and now we only have a deficit that's less than a hundred over the next six months," said Tepper. 

According to Tepper, the net issue is from the treasury. 

"The net issue is first is refunding is a little over a hundred. That means we've got $400 billion, $400 billion that has to be made up. So basically, think about this, so that's being taken out of the market, taken our of the bond market, and that $400 billion is now in your hands, your hands, my hands and other folks hands," said Tepper. 

Tepper said that there's a few choices from there. He said that some must go into the economy.

"You know it should probably all go somewhat into the economy, it has to go into make build the short end of the curve trade better, the long end of the curve trade better, cause there's not as much payment, we have this excess, or it has to make stocks trade higher," said Tepper. 

He said that the arguments he hears on TV are backwards and that if we don't taper back, then we'll go into a hyperdrive market. 

Tepper, however, said that he doesn't really know where the money goes.

"You know who else doesn't know where the moony goes? The Federal Reserve of the United States of America. They really don't know," said Tepper. 

Tepper went on to say that if there's a true taper, there better be a true taper.

"Or else you're back into the last half, I think, you might be in the last half of [1999]," said Tepper. 

"And so guys that are short, they better have a shovel to get themselves out, out of the grave, that they're in," 

Tepper also noted that tapering is seasonal and subject to change, and that while you should expect some of it, the Fed can back off for six months, come back, and then change again.
