GameStop reported third-quarter financial results in December. Crypto analyst Stats <a href="https://x.com/punk9059/status/1888975984751493228">said</a> that Jailstool has nearly returned to its pre-promotion price, raising concerns about the effectiveness of Portnoy's marketing.
"His marketing plays didn&#8217;t work out. People lost real money (which is 100% their own fault). But I think his credibility in this space is pretty ruined," he wrote.
Others, like Kaleo, speculated that Portnoy might keep investing in Jailstool to try and stabilize its price. 
"With how much he&#8217;s talked about &#8216;not even thinking of selling this until it hits &gt;$500M,' feels like there&#8217;s a solid chance he lets his pride get the best of him," Kaleo tweeted, predicting that if Portnoy loses money, he'll turn against meme coins altogether.
Despite the backlash, Portnoy remains a major investor in Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) and XRP (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/xrp/usd">XRP</a>), recently revealing that he <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/12/42602503/dave-portnoy-says-he-owns-15-million-bitcoin-13-million-xrp-bet-it-and-set-it-not-trading">holds $1.5 million in Bitcoin and $1.3 million in XRP</a>.
His Bitcoin investment followed a conversation with Strategy Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSTR#NASDAQ">MSTR</a>) chairman Michael Saylor, who convinced him of Bitcoin's long-term value.

Portnoy, once a skeptic, has since embraced Bitcoin, stating, "I&#8217;m gonna bet it and set it, not trading."

Smart Money Is Betting Big In SWTX Options

Vice President J.D. Vance is being put in charge of overseeing a deal to save TikTok after President Donald Trump changed his mind and decided to temporarily save the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/social-media/25/01/43088960/trump-suspends-us-tiktok-ban-for-75-days-with-executive-order-but-legal-and-market-uncertainty-looms-over-platforms-future">Chinese social media app.</a>
What Happened: Vance, who is a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/24/07/39799850/5-things-you-might-not-know-about-j-d-vance-hillbilly-elegy-author-bitcoin-holder-first-mi">former venture capitalist</a>, is being tasked with helping land the best deal for the potential sale of TikTok's U.S. division to a buyer in the United States.
Vance and National Security Adviser Michael Waltz have been put in charge of the task, according to a Punchbowl <a href="https://punchbowl.news/article/tech/vance-waltz-tiktok-portfolio/">report</a>.
Sources say Vance is in charge of "quarterbacking a deal to save TikTok," which comes after Trump gave 75 days for TikTok parent ByteDance to work out a deal that would give the U.S. or an American company ownership of the U.S. TikTok division.
In 2024, Congress passed a bipartisan law banning TikTok, a decision later upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court. However, Trump's executive order delayed enforcement, leaving TikTok's future uncertain as ByteDance races to find a buyer and finalize a deal.
ByteDance temporarily shut off access to TikTok to hundreds of millions of Americans before reversing course after Trump's executive order. Smartphone owners in the U.S. who did not have TikTok previously installed are unable to download it during the current waiting period.
Vance and Waltz face challenges to make a deal that appeases several parties, including Trump, ByteDance, China, members of Congress, the Senate Intelligence Committee and the potential buying group.
As a former member of Congress and venture capitalist, Vance&#8217;s deal-making experience in both politics and investments could help broker an agreement. This move may also serve as an early test of his effectiveness in the vice-presidential role.
Trump previously suggested that the American government could own part of TikTok, potentially through the newly created U.S. sovereign wealth fund.
The president has voiced support for Oracle Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ORCL#NYSE">ORCL</a>) co-founder Larry Ellison or Tesla CEO Elon Musk <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/social-media/25/01/43181940/elon-musk-or-larry-ellison-dan-ives-on-who-could-win-tiktoks-billion-dollar-soap-opera-someone-hand-picked-from-beijing-but-also-trumps-white-house">buying TikTok. </a>Musk recently said he is not interested. TikTok CEO Shou Chew met with White House officials last week and pitched a U.S. joint venture that would be headquartered in the United States with a board of directors made up of a majority of U.S. members, with the country also overseeing data security.
ByteDance has not been open to selling TikTok off in its entirety. The discussion of a TikTok deal also comes as Trump's tariff proposals and talks with China over trade could make the ByteDance-owned app a leverage piece in a potential trade war.
Vance was a former principal at Peter Thiel's Mithril Capital in 2016 and 2017. He later left Mithril to work at Revolution LLC in 2017, an investment firm founded by AOL founder Steve Case.
In 2019, Vance co-founded Narya Capital, a venture capital fund that received backing from Thiel, Eric Schmidt and Marc Andreessen.
With his venture capital history, Vance has experience in the technology sector and connections to several notable venture capitalists.
While Vance worked for several VC firms,<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/politics/24/07/39916075/j-d-vance-venture-capital-background-under-scrutiny-it-never-seemed-like-he-was-even-working-it-"> his work ethic</a> has been questioned by several former co-workers.
&#8220;It never seemed like he was even working,&#8221; a former coworker&nbsp;<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jd-vance-venture-capitalist-colleagues-2024-7" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">told&nbsp;</a>Business Insider. &#8220;It felt like his full-time job was the book.&#8221;
Former coworkers said Vance did not close a single deal a year after he started with the firm.
Vance has acknowledged his potential lack of contribution at Mithril.
&#8220;How useful I&#8217;ve been on that front is probably debatable,&#8221; Vance said in a previous interview on his venture capital history.
For Vance, securing a deal for TikTok could help win him praise from Trump and Congress members and silence the naysayers who doubt his VC deal-making abilities.

JD Vance 'Quarterbacking' TikTok Deal: Will His Venture Capital Experience Secure A Win?

HIV-Treatment-focused giant&nbsp;Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GILD#NASDAQ">GILD</a>) is scheduled to report fourth-quarter and full-year 2024 results on February 11, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/01/b43286943/gilead-sciences-to-release-fourth-quarter-full-year-2024-financial-results-on-tuesday-february-11-" rel="noreferrer noopener">after the market close</a>.
Analysts estimate fourth-quarter adjusted EPS of $1.70 and revenues of $7.14 billion. The Wall Street forecasts fiscal year 2024 adjusted EPS of $4.41 and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">sales of $28.31 billion</a>.
Gilead reported third-quarter adjusted EPS of $2.02, down from $2.29 a year ago, beating the consensus of $1.55.

The HIV drug maker reported third-quarter sales of $7.55 billion, up 7% year over year, beating the consensus of $7 billion, primarily due to higher sales in HIV and Veklury&nbsp;(remdesivir), Oncology, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/11/41819570/hiv-drugmaker-gilead-reports-strongest-quarterly-performance-of-2024-analysts-boost" rel="noreferrer noopener">and Liver Disease</a>.
Gilead will report the first full quarter sales from Livdelzi&nbsp;(seladelpar) after gaining FDA accelerated approval in mid-August 2024 for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/biotech/24/08/40394698/fda-approves-gileads-seladelpar-for-inflammatory-liver-disease-acquired-via-4b-cymabay-deal" rel="noreferrer noopener">primary biliary cholangitis</a>.
In October, Gilead Sciences&nbsp;announced plans to voluntarily withdraw the U.S. accelerated approval for Trodelvy (sacituzumab govitecan-hziy; SG) for adult patients with locally advanced or metastatic urothelial cancer who have previously received platinum-containing chemotherapy and either programmed death receptor-1 (PD-1) or programmed death-ligand <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/biotech/24/10/41409405/after-failed-confirmatory-trial-gilead-withdraws-us-accelerated-approval-of-trodelvy-as-bladder-c" rel="noreferrer noopener">1 (PD-L1) inhibitor</a>.
In January, Gilead Sciences&nbsp;and&nbsp;LEO Pharma&nbsp;announced a strategic partnership to accelerate the development and commercialization of LEO Pharma&#8217;s small molecule oral STAT6 for inflammatory diseases.
Gilead will acquire LEO Pharma&#8217;s comprehensive preclinical oral STAT6 small molecule inhibitors and targeted protein degraders.
Gilead will lead further development efforts for the oral programs, while LEO Pharma will lead the development of potential topical formulations of STAT6 inhibitors.
LEO Pharma can receive up to $1.7 billion, including an upfront payment of $250 million.
In addition, LEO Pharma may also receive tiered royalties ranging from the high single-digits to the mid-teens on sales of oral STAT6 products.
The transaction with LEO Pharma is expected to reduce Gilead&#8217;s GAAP and non-GAAP 2025 EPS by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/01/b42932896/gilead-and-leo-pharma-enter-into-strategic-partnership-to-accelerate-development-of-oral-stat6-pro" rel="noreferrer noopener">approximately $0.15 &#8211; $0.17</a>.

What To Expect When Biotech Giant Gilead Reports Q4 Earnings On Tuesday?

Amid growing supply constraints and undervalued stock prices, value investors are gravitating towards mining stocks, seeking to capitalize on a market dislocation poised for a readjustment. 



Taylor McKenna, CFA analyst at Kopernik Global Investors LLC, shared insights at a Benzinga virtual event on Thursday, highlighting the significant gap between metal commodity prices and the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/events/mining-unearthed-2024/">valuation of mining companies.</a>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Gold Stocks At A Discount Despite Rising Gold Prices</h3>



McKenna pointed out the stark disconnection in the market, with gold trading above $2,000 per ounce while gold stocks are priced at a discount of 50 to 80%. This discrepancy presents a unique opportunity for investors, according to McKenna, who is &#8220;very happy to take advantage of this currently&#8221;. 



He noted the decline in capital expenditure among mining companies to 80% of what was spent a decade or more ago, forecasting severe supply constraints for various metals.



&#8220;What&#8217;s really exciting for us is that valuations are reaching extremes,&#8221; McKenna said. 



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Newmont Corp: A Case Study in Undervaluation</h3>



McKenna underscored Newmont Corp.&#8216;s (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NEM#NYSE">NEM</a>) 60% stock price drop from the previous year, despite a 10% rise in gold prices. 



Contrary to concerns of value destruction, McKenna praised Newmont&#8217;s acquisition of Newcrest Mining last year as &#8216;a steal&#8217; for the company. 



He argued that Newmont&#8217;s valuation has actually increased.



&#8220;Currently, you can buy gold in the ground at the largest gold producer with the longest mine lives for under $200.00 an ounce. Even if you add lifting cost and then a margin on top of that, it&#8217;s still well below the current gold price of $2,000,&#8221; McKenna said.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Stronger Balance Sheets, Positive Outlook</h3>



McKenna also commended the improved financial health of larger mining firms. He noted their cleaner balance sheets and net cash positions. 



Gold miners&#8217; valuations are already at historic lows relative to the price of gold. McKenna sees even more upside potential if precious metal prices climb further, driven by industry-wide supply constraints.



Addressing the question of Wall Street&#8217;s apparent oversight of this dislocation, McKenna expressed confidence that &#8220;eventually investors will wake up to this.&#8221;
