What Happened: An<a href="http://www.cinemablend.com/news/2564392/wait-is-moviepass-being-resurrected-in-time-for-theaters-reopening">&nbsp;article from CinemaBlend</a> hinted that MoviePass could be making a return. The news sent shares of Helios and Matheson Analytics (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/hmny#OTC">HMNY</a>) soaring 165%, although the stock still trades for under a penny.
The current Moviepass.com website still has old information and talks about the subscription service shutting down. A new website found at <a href="https://moviepass.ventures/">moviepass.ventures </a>says &quot;the movie is about to start.&quot;&nbsp;The&nbsp;website features a countdown hinting that an announcement will be made on March 22.
Readers on CinemaBlend seem excited to see&nbsp;the announcement. Sixty-four percent of respondents&nbsp;selected &quot;I&#39;m very interested. MoviePass was awesome.&quot;&nbsp;An option for being curious about the announcement came in second place with 27% of votes, while 10% of responders selected &quot;I&#39;m done. Moviepass burned me once already.&quot;

Why It&#39;s Important: MoviePass was <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/19/09/14443762/too-good-to-be-true-the-rise-and-fall-of-moviepass">launched </a>in 2011 with a $40 a month subscription service to see one movie per day for the whole month.
By 2017 under the ownership of Helios and Matheson, MoviePass had cut the monthly cost to $9.95 a month and saw subscribers grow from 20,000 to 600,000 in two months. Subscribers hit more than 2 million users in 2018.
The company ended up declaring bankruptcy with reported monthly losses of $20 million and a stock price that plummeted.
MoviePass was a disruptor and showed the demand for movie subscription services. AMC Entertainment (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/amc#NYSE">AMC</a>) and Cinemark Holdings (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/cnk#NYSE">CNK</a>) have each launched subscription services for their own theaters. IMAX Corp (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/imax#NYSE">IMAX</a>) shares rose on the MoviePass success with the company&rsquo;s offerings included in the subscription model from MoviePass.
A revival of the MoviePass service in some form could help theater companies that are hoping to attract fans back to seats when they&#39;re cleared to reopen at full capacity in additional states.
HMNY Price Action: Shares of Helios and Matheson were up 166% on Tuesday, closing at $0.0085 per share. More than 1.5 billion shares were traded compared to a 14.3-million average trading volume over the last 100 days.

Shuttered MoviePass Still Charging Former Subscribers

After a wild eight-year ride, Helios and Matheson Analytics Inc (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/hmny#OTC">HMNY</a>) officially shut down its subscription movie theater service MoviePass last weekend.
In a matter of years, MoviePass went from an unknown startup to a major disruptive force to a financial albatross for parent company Helios.
Here&rsquo;s a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/18/10/12335662/one-year-later-the-rise-and-fall-of-helios-and-matheson">look back</a> at MoviePass&rsquo; rise, downfall and lasting impact on the industry.
<h3>Humble Beginnings</h3>
MoviePass launched back in 2011, charging early customers $40 per month to see one movie per day of the subscriber&rsquo;s choice at any theater.
When the company&rsquo;s first test service launched in San Francisco, 19,000 members initially signed up, grabbing the attention of the major theater chains.
In 2012, MoviePass began a national beta test of its service, which ranged in price between $29 and $34 depending on location.
After limited early success, CEO Mitch Lowe joined MoviePass in June 2016. Lowe&rsquo;s early strategy involved dramatically cutting pricing in an effort to beef up subscriber growth, and the effort worked like a charm.
<h3>Helios Takes Control</h3>
Helios took a majority stake in MoviePass in August 2017, and MoviePass initially announced it would be cutting its monthly subscription price to just $9.95.
Helios stock took off following news of its stake, skyrocketing from under $3 per share prior to the deal to an intraday high of $38.86 on Oct. 11, 2017.
Less than two weeks later, Helios announced MoviePass&rsquo; subscriber count had grown from 20,000 to more than 600,000 in roughly two months&#39; time.
By February 2018, MoviePass&rsquo; subscriber count exceeded 2 million users, but the writing may have already been on the wall from a financial standpoint.
Helios stock traded down more than 90% from its peak levels after the company announced a $60-million equity offering priced at $6.50 per share.
<h3>Struggling To Survive</h3>
Things really started to get bad for MoviePass in April 2018, when Helios disclosed that it had been losing an average of $20 million per month since September 2017.
Helios&rsquo; auditor issued a &ldquo;going concern&rdquo; statement about the company&rsquo;s ability to maintain operations for another year, and Helios said it planned to raise more cash by selling shares at a steep discount to market price.
To maintain its Nasdaq listing, Helios announced a 250-to-1 reverse stock split in July 2018. A subsequent MoviePass price hike and a new restriction on new releases triggered a customer backlash, forcing MoviePass to walk back its price hike.
Instead, the company reduced the total number of monthly tickets from 30 to just three.
After reporting another $137-million loss in the third quarter of 2018, Helios and Matheson <a href="https://www.marketwatch.com/story/moviepass-parent-helios-mathesons-stock-to-be-delisted-at-the-open-and-the-company-wont-fight-it-2019-02-13">was delisted</a> from the Nasdaq in February 2019.
Helios finally suspended MoviePass during the peak of summer blockbuster season in July before announcing that the&nbsp;service is shutting down for good on Saturday.
<h3>Lasting Impact</h3>
MoviePass was a true disruptor in the space, inspiring similar subscription services from companies like AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/amc#NYSE">AMC</a>) and Cinemark Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/cnk#NYSE">CNK</a>).
Helios investors likely take little comfort in the impact MoviePass had on the industry. Helios shares are now trading on the OTC market at less than a penny a share.

However, we didn't see a path to sustainability as an independent movie ticket subscription service in the face of competition from movie theaters as they build their own subscriptions. Thanks to the cost advantage and cross-sell opportunities, movie theaters will be prominent in the movie ticket subscription economy. 
While we are proud to have created a best in market service, our efforts to cover the cost of unexpected legal proceedings and raise the funds required to continue operations have not been sufficient. The competition in the US market and the core economics of what it costs to deliver Sinemia's end-to-end experience ultimately lead us to the decision of discontinuing our US operations. 
Despite the best efforts of our team, it has been difficult for us as a start-up to continue providing our services to the moviegoers in the US without resources and enough capital to meet increased operations and legal costs.

Some of the most popular and best-performing stocks in the market over the past decade are often criticized for being &ldquo;cult stocks.&rdquo; The word &ldquo;cult&rdquo; certainly has negative connotations, but investing in a cult stock can be both extremely lucrative and potentially dangerous.
<h3>What Is A Cult Stock?</h3>
Just because a stock is popular doesn&rsquo;t mean it&#39;s a cult stock. Stocks are typically valued based on fundamental business metrics reported on a quarterly basis. These metrics typically include numbers such as earnings, revenue, cash flow, margins, debt and other indicators of how well a business is performing.
In certain cases, stock valuations become completely detached from traditional metrics. The valuation of cult stocks typically revolves around a story rather than tangible numbers. Investors ignore how the business is performing and focus more on what it could be sometime down the line. Cult stocks often have charismatic CEOs who make lofty promises to investors.
The companies behind cult stocks typically are developing a revolutionary or groundbreaking product or service that investors believe has the potential to completely disrupt a massive established market. In reality, this type of disruption is extremely rare. For every Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/amzn#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) there <a href="https://www.cbinsights.com/research/biggest-startup-failures/">are thousands</a> of Solyndras, Jawbones, Theranos and Wongas.
<h3>A Dangerous Mentality</h3>
There&rsquo;s nothing wrong with having faith in a CEO or a stock. Blind faith, however, can be a big problem. Cult stock investors tend to dismiss any negative reporting relating to a company and scapegoat short sellers or even the financial journalists and analysts reporting on the company rather than blame the company or management itself.
&ldquo;The biggest sign that a company has a cult following is the deluge of nasty emails we get when any of us writes anything, and I mean anything, that might question that company&#39;s strategy,&rdquo; Motley Fool contributor Alyce Lomax wrote back <a href="https://www.fool.com/investing/general/2005/11/08/wrath-of-the-apple-cult.aspx">in 2005</a>.
Ironically, the cult stock Lomax was blasted for questioning at the time was none other than Apple, Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/aapl#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>), which is up about 1,930 percent since that article was written.
Just because a stock is a cult stock doesn&rsquo;t mean its a bad investment. Some cult stocks (Enron, Helios and Matheson Analytics Inc (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/hmny#OTC">HMNY</a>), GoPro, Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gpro#NASDAQ">GPRO</a>), etc.) end up being big long-term losers for investors. Others, like Apple, Amazon and Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/nflx#NASDAQ">NFLX</a>), end up big winners.
The important thing for investors is not to avoid cult stocks. It&rsquo;s only to recognize the cult stock mentality and make sure not to get swept up in it so much as to ignore the extremely high risk associated with buying a stock with questionable fundamentals and an extremely high valuation.
&ldquo;When stocks fly into orbit, breaking free from all traditional valuation restraints, I have a hard time telling you to buy them,&rdquo; Jim Cramer said of cult stocks back <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2015/06/08/cramer-cult-stocks-ready-for-huge-opportunity.html">in 2015</a>. At the time, Cramer was specifically addressing Netflix, Amazon and Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tsla#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>).
<h3>Cult Stocks In Today&rsquo;s Market</h3>
Identifying cult stocks is somewhat subjective, but a good place to start is to look for stocks with large market caps that have negative earnings or extremely high earnings multiples. Companies with negative free cash flow are also potentially cult stocks. These cult stocks often tend not to react to negative headlines as well due to their extremely loyal investor base. They also tend to have large outstanding short positions of bears that recognize the disconnect between the company&rsquo;s fundamentals and its valuation.
