Malaysia Targets Ambitious $107B Investment to Boost Semiconductor Sector

Embracing Emerging Technologies To Bring The Automotive Industry To The Next Level

The European Central Bank (ECB) on Thursday held interest rates at 4%, signalling no policy action for the fourth-consecutive month and following in the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/federal-reserve">Federal Reserve&#8217;s cautious footsteps</a>.
Like the Fed, there was no major shift towards dovishness in the following press conference, where ECB president Christine Lagarde said that current levels of policy were being maintained &#8220;for a sufficiently long duration&#8221; to bring inflation back down to its 2% target.
The central bank did lower its inflation forecasts. The ECB now expects inflation to average 2.3% this year, down from December&#8217;s forecast of 2.7%, and sees the rate averaging 2% in 2025, down from 2.1%.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Market Reaction</h1>
Markets responded positively, with the higher-for-longer rates scenario boosting the euro against the dollar and expectations of rate cuts later in the year pushing stock prices higher.
ASML Holding NV (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ASML#NASDAQ">ASML</a>), Europe&#8217;s biggest company, and is a maker of semiconductor manufacturing equipment, gained 3.1% to $1,034. Europe&#8217;s biggest chipmaker Infineon Technologies AG (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IFNNY#OTC">IFNNY</a>) gained 3% to $38.
ASML is the largest holding in the iShares MSCI Eurozone ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EZU#NYSE">EZU</a>), which climbed 1.3% to $50.34 following the ECB&#8217;s decision.

On foreign exchanges, the euro currency was supported against its rivals, up 0.5% against the dollar with one euro buying $1.2786.
The ProShares Ultra Euro ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ULE#NYSE">ULE</a>), an exchange-traded fund that tracks euro performance, was up 0.3% at $11.61.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Analyst Reaction</h1>
&#8220;All in all, today's meeting was a clear and well-structured meeting with an unambiguous&nbsp;message that for now, it&#8217;s&nbsp;too early to discuss rate cuts, but the time&nbsp;for that will come,&#8221; said Carsten Brzeski, global head of macro at ING.
&#8220;We think it will be in June. Let's hope that today's meeting will also end the cacophony of national central bankers commenting on the timing of future rate cuts, which has resembled something of a noisy atonal choir in recent weeks,&#8221; Brzeski added.
Althea Spinozzi, head of fixed income strategy at Saxo Bank, said: &#8220;The ECB inflation forecasts are bullish for EU bonds across tenors because they show inflation is not a problem and stagflation is intensifying. Thus, the ECB must engage in aggressive cuts soon to rescue the economy.&#8221;
Mohamed El-Erian, chief economic adviser at Allianz, said: &#8220;The market mover is that it notably revised down its 2024 inflation forecast on the back of more favorable non-services inflation. Market yields are lower as a result.&#8221;
A June rate cut from the ECB would time exactly with what&#8217;s expected from the Fed in the U.S. and would signal a policy shift that&#8217;s likely to be followed soon after by many developed market central banks.

European Central Bank Lowers Inflation Outlook But Holds Interest Rates: 2 Stocks, 2 ETFs To Watch

There&rsquo;s revolution, or better said, evolution, brewing on the EV battery front. Last year, Toyota Motor (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tm#NYSE">TM</a>) announced its plans of releasing an EV by 2028 that will recharge in only 10 min while traveling 1,000 kilometers.&nbsp;
But the fact that even the EV king, Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tsla#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) isn&rsquo;t providing updates on the battery front shows how daunting this pursuit is. After all, it&rsquo;s not only about a battery that gets recharged quickly, but also about packing as much possible energy into as little material and weight as possible and for that battery to have a long lifespan and for it to&nbsp;work well across a variety of temperatures.&nbsp;Moreover, that&nbsp;safety and assurance also needs to be affordable.
Recent reports showed that Tesla drivers had difficulties in cold weather, as batteries died in freezing temperatures while power stations either not working or taking longer than usual to charge EVs. Also,&nbsp;Recurrent&#39;s research&nbsp;showed that&nbsp;below-freezing temperatures&nbsp;reduced the&nbsp;driving range&nbsp;of 18 popular EV models up to as much as&nbsp;30%.
Although Tesla still doesn&rsquo;t have a complete&nbsp;answer for freezing weather, the pickup parts player, more precisely, tonneau cover maker, Worksport Ltd (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/wksp#NASDAQ">WKSP</a>) is taking action to address this issue with its products.
Worksport just revealed it joined forces with&nbsp;Infineon Technologies AG&nbsp;(OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ifnny#OTC">IFNNY</a>)&nbsp;to reduce weight and cost of portable power stations, ensuring power-dense converters for its COR system product line. Worksport developed COR, a portable battery system, together with SOLIS, a solar-powered tonneau cover. Unlike SOLIS, COR can be used independently, but it can also be integrated into a pickup truck. It can be recharged through a wall outlet or any solar panel.
Worksport has been rigorously testing its COR battery power system since November to ensure high performance in extreme situations, including extreme cold and hot climates, rigorous terrain, humidity. Worksport will also conduct shock tests to account for unforeseen events.
Empowered by Infineon, Worksport can create the next generation portable power stations with GaN power semiconductors. By replacing the former silicon switch in the power converter with Infineon&rsquo;s GaN power semiconductors and operating the transistors at higher switching frequency, Worksport will be able to reduce the battery system weight by 33% and system costs by up to 25%.&nbsp;
Moreover, through this collaboration and GaN game changing technology, Worksport will be able to lower CO2 emissions through its manufacturing process. For data centers alone, this technology has a global energy savings potential that equates to 10 million tons of CO2.
To be rescued, the EV revolution needs battery and power innovation.
This winter brought out one of the many barriers to global EV adoption, range anxiety or more precisely, the reliability of battery. Tesla ended 2023 by getting surpassed by BYD during the last quarter for the first time and it entered 2024 with its battery failing to perform on Chicago roads. Its response, for now, is the recommendation to leave vehicles plugged in whenever possible as keeping the charge level above 20% when unplugged will reduce the impact of bitter cold temperatures. EV Evolution Demands Power Design Innovation

Infineon Technologies AG (OTCQX:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IFNNY#OTCQX">IFNNY</a>) has announced a collaboration with Worksport Ltd. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WKSP#NASDAQ">WKSP</a>, )))). Worksport will use Infineon's GaN power semiconductors GS-065-060-5-B-A in the converters for its portable power stations to increase efficiency and power density. Enabled by Infineon's GaN transistors, the power converters will be lighter and smaller in size with reduced system costs. In addition, Infineon will support Worksport in the optimization of circuits and layout design to further reduce size and increase power density. &nbsp;
"Infineon's high-quality standard and solid supply chain provide us with the best components to ensure power-dense converters for our COR system product line and contribute to a first-class end product performance," said Worksport CEO Steven Rossi. The company's COR battery system can be integrated into a pickup truck or recharged by any solar panel or wall outlet. By replacing the former silicon switch in the power converter with Infineon's GaN power semiconductors and operating the transistors at higher switching frequency, Worksport will be able to reduce the battery system weight by 33 percent and system costs by up to 25 percent.
The working relationship with Infineon will also help Worksport to reduce CO2 in the manufacturing process. GaN is proving itself as a game-changing technology across many markets and applications. For example, in data centers, GaN solutions have a global energy savings potential of 21 TWh annually, 10 million tons1 of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) equivalent. Infineon And GlobalFoundries Extend Long-Term Agreement With Focus On Automotive Microcontrollers

In a report, Chinese-language business daily Caixin said that silicon carbide wafer&nbsp;manufacturers will be the biggest beneficiary of the increasing competition between China&rsquo;s EV makers.
The report quotes a Chinese investment manager who declined to be named as a result of his position. Caixin is China&#39;s leading business daily and its reporters are closely networked with China government officials.&nbsp;
Caixin reports that high-quality SiC chips produced by international manufacturers vs. lower-quality Chinese wafers are increasingly hard to find, and that there is a pressure on supply.
&ldquo;Everybody is fighting for SiC wafers,&rdquo; the investment manager told Caixin. &ldquo;It is hard to lay hands on wafers produced by first-tier major international suppliers, such as Wolfspeed, Inc. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/wolf#NYSE">WOLF</a>),&rdquo; the manager said.
The world&rsquo;s largest SiC wafer manufacturers comprise STMicroelectronics N.V. Automakers such as Li Auto Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/li#NASDAQ">LI</a>), XPeng Inc. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/xpev#NYSE">XPEV</a>), Nio Inc. Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tsla#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) was the first automaker to introduce SiC wafers, although the company has since said it has figured out ways to cut back on its usage of Silicon Carbide chips as part of its cost-reduction strategy to make its cars more profitable.
Traditional car makers turning to the EV market such as Mercedes-Benz Group AG (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/mbgaf#OTC">MBGAF</a>), BMW (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/bmwyy#OTC">BMWYY</a>), Volkswagen AG (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/vwapy#OTC">VWAPY</a>) and Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tm#NYSE">TM</a>) in particular are ordering increasing numbers of SiC wafers to fuel them as unlike Tesla, they have not figured out ways to cut back on their usage, according to China VCs.
All this demand in an increasingly-crowded EV space is putting upward pressure on prices of SiC waifers as suppliers can&rsquo;t keep up with the demand from automakers, the Caixin report said. If Li Auto alone wanted to use SiC chips in all its June delivery vehicles, it would need 5,000 six-inch SiC waifers which is more than any production line in China can supply in a month, Lu Xiaobao, managing director of China VC CAS Star told Caixin.
