Amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, Israeli stocks are experiencing their steepest weekly decline since early October 2023, when Hamas launched a devastating attack on Israel, killing over 1,000 people and abducting 250 civilians <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/israel">to the Gaza Strip.</a>
The Tel Aviv 125 index has dropped over 4% this week through Thursday, while the shekel weakened by more than 3.8% against the dollar, marking its steepest weekly fall since June 2022.
Exchange-traded funds listed in the U.S. that track Israeli equities, such as the iShares MSCI Israel ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EIS#NYSE">EIS</a>) and the VanEck Israel ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ISRA#NYSE">ISRA</a>), declined by 6.4% and 5.4%, respectively, by the close of trading on Thursday.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What Has Happened In The Middle East This Week?</h3>
In the past 48 hours, Middle Eastern tensions have significantly escalated following the deaths of three key commanders from Iran-affiliated military proxies engaged in conflict with Israel.
On Wednesday, Israeli forces announced the killing of Fuad Shukr, a military leader of Hezbollah, in a raid in Beirut. On the same day, Iran accused Israel of assassinating Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas, in Tehran. 
Iran called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/asia/24/07/40084635/crude-oil-records-biggest-1-day-surge-since-october-2023-as-iran-vows-retaliation-against-israel-un">to address the incident</a>, while Israel neither confirmed nor denied its involvement in Haniyeh&#8217;s death.
According to a source contacted by <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/world/live-news/israel-hamas-haniyeh-iran-tensions-08-01-24-intl-hnk/index.html">CNN</a>, Haniyeh was killed in Tehran on Wednesday by an explosive device planted in a guest house he frequently visited. The device was placed two months ago and detonated remotely when he entered his room.
On Thursday, Israel announced that it had eliminated Mohammed Deif, the head of Hamas&#8217;s military wing, in an air raid on Khan Younis in Gaza on July 13. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated that this action represents a &#8220;significant milestone in the process of dismantling Hamas as a military and governing authority in Gaza.&#8221;
&#8220;In a world where you can be anything, Mohammed Deif chose to be a mastermind of terrorism,&#8221; Israeli Defense Forces stated in an official post on social-media platform X. 
Israeli forces also claimed Thursday to have killed Al Jazeera journalist Ismail al-Ghoul. The IDF <a href="https://x.com/IDF/status/1819072480746594496?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1819072480746594496%7Ctwgr%5E318723cacaf3fd93cad29e4a25734117a5a8c09d%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fdailycaller.com%2F2024%2F08%2F01%2Fidf-al-jazeera-journalist-killed-al-ghoul%2F">stated </a>that he was a Hamas military operative and Nukhba terrorist.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Israel On &#8216;Very High Alert&#8217; As Iran Allies Pledge Retaliation</h3>
Hezbollah&#8217;s political leader, Hassan Nasrallah, and Iranian officials have vowed to retaliate against Israel. In a speech on Thursday, Nasrallah stated, &#8220;We are not saying we are reserving the right to respond — we will respond, this is definite.&#8221;
Iran&#8217;s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei remarked on Wednesday, &#8220;You killed our dear guest in our house and now have paved the way for your harsh punishment.&#8221; 
Iran&#8217;s acting foreign minister, Ali Bagheri Kani, warned regional counterparts on Thursday that Iran would exercise its &#8220;legitimate right to take remorseful and decisive action against&#8221; Israel.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that &#8220;Israel is on very high alert for all scenarios, both in defense and offense,&#8221; according to an update from his office. He added that Israeli forces will &#8220;exact a very high price for any act of aggression against us from any arena.&#8221;

Cyclical consumer goods &amp; services shares gained by 0.39 percent in trading on Friday. Top gainers in the sector included Big Lots, Inc. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/big#NYSE">BIG</a>), Ulta Salon, Cosmetics &amp; Fragrance, Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ulta#NASDAQ">ULTA</a>), and Radio One, Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/roiak#NASDAQ">ROIAK</a>).
In trading on Friday, energy shares dropped by 0.64 percent. Meanwhile, top losers in the sector included Cobalt International Energy, Inc. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/cie#NYSE">CIE</a>), down 8 percent, and Isramco, Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/isrl#NASDAQ">ISRL</a>), down 6 percent.
Top Headline
 Big Lots, Inc. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/big#NYSE">BIG</a>) reported stronger-than-expected results for the first quarter and raised its full-year forecast. 
Big Lots delivered earnings of $0.79 per share, up from $0.60 per share in the year-ago quarter. Excluding adjustments, it would have delivered income from continuing operations of $0.82 per share. Street analysts estimated the retailer to earn $0.70 a share.
Its sales grew 2.34 percent to $1.31 billion from $1.28 billion in the previous year quarter. Analysts predicted revenue of $1.3 billion. Its comparable store sales grew three percent.
For the full year, the retailer sees adjusted income from continuing operations to be $3.35 - $3.50 a share representing 11 – 16 percent increase over the last year's adjusted EPS of $3.01.
Equities Trading UP 
 Relypsa Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/rlyp#NASDAQ">RLYP</a>) shares shot up 21 percent to $20.01. According to the TheStreet'sAdam Feuerstein, Relypisa scored a "big win" on Friday after its chief rival AstraZeneca plc (ADR) (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/azn#NYSE">AZN</a>) confirmed the U.S. Food and Drug Administration sent a Complete Response Letter (CRL) concerning its hyoperkalaemia treatment known as ZS-9. Feuerstein suggested that AstraZeneca's setback is "fantastic news" for Relypsa, who just secured FDA approval for its rival drug Veltassa last October. 
Shares of Titan Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ttnp#NASDAQ">TTNP</a>) got a boost, shooting up 17 percent to $8.30 as the company reported the FDA approval for Probuphine.
 FEI Company (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/feic#NASDAQ">FEIC</a>) shares were also up, gaining 14 percent to $107.37 as the company agreed to be acquired by Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/tmo#NYSE">TMO</a>) for $4.2 billion. 
Equities Trading DOWN
 Hercules Offshore, Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/hero#NASDAQ">HERO</a>) shares dropped 48 percent to $1.00 as the company reported that it has entered into a restructuring support agreement with lenders.
Shares of UniPixel Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/unxl#NASDAQ">UNXL</a>) were down 26 percent to $1.53 after the company announced a public offering of newly issued shares of stock. UniPixel plans to offer 5.35 million shares of its own stock at a public offering price of $1.50 per share with the option for its underwriters to purchase up to an additional 802,500 shares.
 Terex Corporation (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/tex#NYSE">TEX</a>) was down, falling around 20 percent to $19.40 as the company revealed discussions with Zoomlion Heavy Industry Science and Technology Co. in respect of the purchase of Terex, either with or without the MHPS segment, were terminated.
Commodities
In commodity news, oil traded down 0.71 percent to $49.13 while gold traded up 0.08 percent to $1,223.70.
Silver traded up 0.01 percent Friday to $16.35, while copper rose 1.17 percent to $2.13.
Eurozone
European shares were mostly higher today. The eurozone's STOXX 600 gained 0.05 percent, the Spanish Ibex Index rose 0.28 percent, while Italy's FTSE MIB Index declined 0.14 percent. Meanwhile the German DAX gained 0.15 percent, and the French CAC 40 declined 0.12 percent, while U.K. shares fell 0.05 percent.
Economics
The U.S. economy grew at an annual pace of 0.8 percent in the first quarter. However, economists were expecting a 0.9 percent growth.
The University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index increased to 94.70 in May, versus a final April reading of 89.00. Economists were projecting a reading of 95.40.

In trading on Wednesday, healthcare shares rose by just 0.1 percent. Meanwhile, top losers in the sector included Opko Health Inc. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/opk#NYSE">OPK</a>), down 8 percent, and Athersys, Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/athx#NASDAQ">ATHX</a>), down 8 percent.

Lululemon Athletica inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/lulu#NASDAQ">LULU</a>) reported better-than-expected results for its fourth quarter on Wednesday.
Lululemon posted quarterly earnings of $0.85 per share on revenue of $704.3 million. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.80 per share on revenue of $693.4 million.
Lululemon expects FY 2016 earnings of $2.05 to $2.15 per share, and revenue of $2.285 billion to $2.335 billion. Analysts projected earnings of $2.15 per share and revenue of $2.33 billion.
Equities Trading UP 
 Xtant Medical Holdings Inc (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/xtnt#NYSE">XTNT</a>) shares shot up 15 percent to $2.81 after the company reported the FDA clearance of the Xspan laminoplasty fixation system.
Shares of Argos Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/args#NASDAQ">ARGS</a>) got a boost, shooting up 15 percent to $7.82 on Q4 results. Argos Therapeutics reported a Q4 loss of $(0.84) per share on revenue of $74,000.
 ConforMIS Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/cfms#NASDAQ">CFMS</a>) shares were also up, gaining 11 percent to $10.42 after the company announced positive results from several clinical studies. ConforMIS stated the results from the studies will be fully presented at the 2016 British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK) Annual Meeting which takes places Wednesday through Thursday.

 ContraVir Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ctrv#NASDAQ">CTRV</a>) shares dropped 25 percent to $1.26 after the company reported a proposed stock and warrant offering to purchase stock.
Shares of Verint Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/vrnt#NASDAQ">VRNT</a>) were down 11 percent to $31.48 after the company reported downbeat earnings for its fourth quarter and issued a weak forecast. The company also reported a $150 million buyback program.
 FormFactor, Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/form#NASDAQ">FORM</a>) was down, falling around 8 percent to $7.28 after the company lowered its outlook for the first quarter.
Commodities
In commodity news, oil traded down 0.24 percent to $38.19, while gold traded down 0.74 percent to $1,228.30.
Silver traded down 0.12 percent Wednesday to $15.22, while copper fell 1.04 percent to $2.19.
Eurozone
European shares closed higher today. The eurozone's STOXX 600 rose 1.30 percent, the Spanish Ibex Index gained 0.70 percent, while Italy's FTSE MIB Index surged 1.12 percent. Meanwhile, the German DAX gained 1.60 percent, and the French CAC 40 gained 1.78 percent, while U.K. shares rose 1.59 percent.
Economics
The private sector added 200,000 jobs in March, according to ADP. However, economists were expecting a gain of 194,000 jobs. 
Crude oil supplies gained 2.3 million barrels for the week ended March 25, the U.S. Energy Information Administration reported. However, analysts were expecting an increase of 2 million barrels. Gasoline supplies slipped 2.5 million barrels, while distillate stockpiles declined 1.1 million barrels last week.
