Unlike retail-driven boom-and-bust cycles, institutional adoption moves slowly over years, not months.
With ETFs already attracting billions and regulatory clarity potentially unlocking trillions, Hougan believes institutional adoption may override the typical four-year cycle. 
While leverage-driven excess will still emerge, any market corrections in the future may be shorter and less severe than in past cycles.

What's Next: Hougan believes crypto is entering a new, mainstream era, with longer and more sustained growth rather than sharp boom-and-bust cycles.

However, he remains unsure as the scale is too big.
Hougan acknowledges that the four-year cycle isn't disappearing entirely.  
"Leverage will build up. Excess will appear. Bad actors will emerge. And at some point, that could get washed out, which will introduce volatility into the market," he said.

BofA Securities analyst Michael Feniger cut the price forecast on Caterpillar, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CAT#NYSE">CAT</a>) from $452 to $414 <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/cat/analyst-ratings" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">while retaining a Buy rating</a>.
Yesterday, the company reported mixed&nbsp;fourth-quarter&nbsp;FY24 results. Total sales and revenue were $16.215 billion, missing the consensus of&nbsp;$16.411 billion, and adjusted earnings of&nbsp;$5.14&nbsp;per share came&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/01/43335504/caterpillar-beats-q4-eps-estimates-but-revenue-disappoints-machinery-energy-transportation-segment-faces-pressure" rel="noreferrer noopener">above the consensus of&nbsp;$4.99</a>.
For 2025,&nbsp;sales are expected to decline ~1% due to unfavorable pricing, with a slight headwind in other income from&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance" rel="noreferrer noopener">lower interest income and currency effects</a>.
The analyst noted that adjusted EPS was better than expected, but underlying operating profit performance underwhelmed.
Feniger says that CAT is facing a pricing pullback after strong gains in favorable supply-demand conditions.
Construction pricing fell 4.6% in the fourth quarter (vs. -2.1% in the third quarter), with similar headwinds expected in the first quarter of 2025. The analyst adds that dealers reduced machine inventory by $1.6 billion in the fourth quarter, creating a headwind in the first half of FY25.
Feniger adjusted the estimates based on the softer 2025 guidance, with the EPS estimate cut to $19.25 from $21 for 2025 and $23 from $25 for 2026.
Oppenheimer analyst Kristen Owen maintained a Perform rating and says that although CI and RI demand remain challenges into 2025, the positive contribution from data centers is helping offset the impact on the EPS outlook and supporting valuation.
The key risk is margin performance, as negative pricing and under-absorption leave little room for error if demand softens, adds the analyst. Owen expects a volatile 2025 amid policy uncertainty, AI advancements, and a stronger commodities backdrop.
Goldman Sachs&nbsp;analyst Jerry Revich reiterated the Buy rating on the stock, as the company is well-positioned to grow unit profitability cycle over cycle. The analyst raised the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/01/43348415/goldman-sachs-caterpillars-production-cuts-and-destocking-peak-could-benefit-margins" rel="noreferrer noopener">price forecast from $442 to $456.</a>
This growth will be driven by increasing content, a market shift toward CAT&#8217;s high-return products in Energy &amp; Transportation, and expanding technology-enabled service growth, per the analyst.
Price Action: CAT shares are down 0.79% at $372.02 at the last check Friday.

Shares of Deckers Outdoor Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DECK#NYSE">DECK</a>) <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/01/43388384/walgreens-deckers-outdoor-beazer-homes-and-other-big-stocks-moving-lower-in-fridays-pre-market-session">are getting decked</a> in Friday's trading session, with shares down over 18%. This is despite posting what appears to be an excellent earnings release.
If the shares continue to decline, there is a good chance they will find support around $182.25. This level has been important. It is why DECK is our Stock of the Day.
Decker's reported 3Q sales of $1.83 billion. Analysts were looking for $1.73 billion.
Earnings were also well ahead of estimates. They came in at $3 per share. The Street was looking for $2.56.
The company also forecast full-year earnings to be $5.75 to $5.80. This is well ahead of the prior outlook of $5.15 to $5.25.
So why are the shares down?
One reason could be possible concerns over the company's inventory buildup. It grew from $474,311,000 to $576,669,000. This is an increase of more than 20%.
Inventory increases can be a troubling sign for a retailer. Things that don't sell can end up in inventory. A company may have to eventually reduce the sale prices or take a writedown. This could be a bearish signal for the long term.

Regardless, if DECK drops to levels around $182.25, there is a chance the sell-off ends. A reversal and rally may even follow.
You can see on the chart that this price was resistance last June. Sometimes levels that had been resistance can turn into support and that could be the case here.

Many of the traders and investors who sold in June were happy they did so when the price dropped. But in November, the resistance was broken, and DECK moved higher.
When this happened, some of the previously happy sellers came to think their decision to sell had been a mistake. Many of these regretful sellers decide that they will repurchase their shares. But they will only do so if they can reacquire them for the same price they were sold.
As a result, if DECK gets to around $182.00 there will be remorseful sellers placing buy orders. If there are enough of them, the level that has been at a peak or resistance will convert into support.
This could put a floor under DECK. It could also be the first step of a new uptrend.
