Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell reiterated a firm stance on the central bank's monetary policy path on Wednesday, indicating that while inflation is moderating, it hasn't cooled enough <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/interest-rates">to justify rate cuts.</a>
Testifying before the House Financial Services Committee after addressing the Senate Banking Committee on Tuesday, Powell hinted that further progress is needed to reach the Fed's 2% inflation target.
&#8220;Today&#8217;s inflation print shows we&#8217;re close but not there yet,&#8221; Powell said, referencing the latest Consumer Price Index report, which showed annual inflation at 3%, slightly above forecasts of 2.9%.
Core inflation, which excludes food and energy, also ticked up more than expected to 3.3%, signaling persistent price pressures.
The &#8220;the CPI reading was above almost every forecast,&#8221; Powell said, yet he urged patience.
&#8220;We don't get excited about one or two good readings, and we don't get excited about one or two bad readings.&#8221;
The Fed primarily focuses on Personal Consumption Expenditures inflation, which he described as a &#8220;better measure of inflation.&#8221;
&#8220;Tomorrow we'll get the producer price index&#8230; we'll actually know what the PCE readings are late tomorrow,&#8221; he added.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Powell Chills Rate Cut Hopes, Flags Tariff, Fiscal Concerns</h3>
When asked at what level of inflation he would consider cutting interest rates, Powell declined to specify, saying, &#8220;We didn't make much progress on core CPI. I'm not putting a specific number. We have the luxury to wait.&#8221;
Powell made it clear the Fed intends to keep policy restrictive, reinforcing the central bank's reluctance to cut rates prematurely. 
On tariffs, Powell said that &#8220;it is possible that the Fed would have to move the policy rate,&#8221; hinting at the economic impact of potential Trump-related trade policies. 
He also stressed concerns over the U.S. fiscal outlook, noting the country is running &#8220;a very large deficit at a time of very low unemployment,&#8221; calling the debt path &#8220;unsustainable&#8221; and urging both political parties to address the issue.
Powell raised concerns about market stability, saying, &#8220;I&#8217;ve been somewhat concerned about Treasury liquidity.&#8221; 
On long-term economic growth prospects, he suggested taking a cautious approach, stating: &#8220;If we are talking about long-term budget assumptions, I&#8217;d be conservative and say 2% real growth. It&#8217;s doable.&#8221;
Despite growing speculation about political pressures, Powell reaffirmed his commitment to his role, saying there are &#8220;no changes&#8221; to his stance that he will not resign if asked to do so by President Donald Trump.

GlobalFoundries Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GFS#NASDAQ">GFS</a>) stock gained after Needham analyst Quinn Bolton upgraded the stock from Hold to Buy and a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/GFS/analyst-ratings" rel="noreferrer noopener">price target of $50</a>.
On Tuesday, GlobalFoundries reported a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/02/43623967/globalfoundries-beats-q4-estimates-margins-shrink-935-million-impairment-charge" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fiscal fourth-quarter</a> 2024 revenue decline of 1% to $1.83 billion, beating the analyst consensus estimate of $1.829 billion.
The adjusted EPS of 46 cents beat the&nbsp;analyst consensus estimate of 44 cents.&nbsp;

Bolton noted the outlook for GlobalFoundries is improving as the semiconductor industry emerges from the cyclical downturn. The analyst forecasts a return to growth in 2025 driven by strength in Automotive and Communications/Data Centers.
Management targets exiting fourth-quarter 2025 with gross margin at ~30%, well above Bolton&#8217;s previous estimate of 26.8%. The most significant driver of improving gross margin will be increased utilization levels as the company returns to growth in 2025.
The company is taking several actions to reduce variable costs, and depreciation will decline by ~15% Y/Y (~$250 million) as depreciation on legacy equipment rolls off and reflects a $935 million impairment charge on legacy long-lived assets in the fourth quarter of 2024. Additionally, the pricing environment has primarily stabilized, consistent with comments made over the last few quarters.
GlobalFoundries expects to return to growth in 2025, driven by positive catalysts in its end markets. In Automotive, management believes the company has sufficient design wins to support a similar level of growth as seen in fiscal 2024 (+15% Y/Y), despite weakness in the broader environment. Communication Infrastructure and Data Centers will likely grow significantly, driven by demand for optical transceivers, SATCOM applications, and partnerships with AI companies such as Groq. 
Smart Mobile Devices will likely be ~flat despite expectations of the broader market to improve modestly. Bolton noted that an AI refresh cycle will drive the upside in Smart Mobile Devices. In Home and Industrial IoT, management is starting to see pockets of strength. This segment bottomed in 2024 and will likely post modest growth in 2025.
Bolton noted that holding GlobalFoundries is a good hedge against the political uncertainty between the U.S. and China. Excessive tariffs benefit GlobalFoundries in terms of onshore production and manufacturing. Management revealed they have already discussed diversifying their supply chains and multi-sourcing with customers.
Bolton projected fiscal 2025 revenue of $7.05 billion and EPS of $1.70.
Price Action: GlobalFoundries stock is up 7.96% at $43.28 at the last check on Wednesday.

Mohan rerated Apple citing stable cash flows, earnings resiliency and potential beneficiary of AI use on edge devices.
On Apple&#8217;s first-quarter earnings call, CEO Tim Cook noted that markets with Apple Intelligence on iPhone outperform markets where it is not yet available, highlighting Apple&#8217;s desire for a global rollout of the feature. Apple&#8217;s China revenues have fallen for six consecutive quarters as competitors Huawei and Xiaomi have gained a market share. Mohan noted that Apple could regain its share in the Chinese market if it could launch Apple Intelligence successfully to compete with Huawei and Xiaomi&#8217;s currently available AI offerings.
Apple Intelligence is only available on iPhones in the U.S., Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and the U.K. However, It is available in the EU but only on Mac OS, with Apple noting that &#8220;many core features of Apple Intelligence&#8221; will roll out for EU customers on iPhone and iPad in April.
During their first-quarter earnings call in April, Apple announced they are releasing additional languages for Singapore, India and Simplified Chinese. Presumably, with the release of these new languages, Apple Intelligence will roll out on iPhones in the corresponding countries (except for China). When asked, Apple noted that the Chinese language rollout targeted Chinese speakers outside of China and did not indicate any pending rollout for China. In the December iPhone update, Apple integrated enhanced Siri with ChatCPT functions to expand Siri&#8217;s abilities, but this feature is available only in the U.S.
Alibaba&#8217;s LLM (large language model), QWEN, just launched the 2.5 model version at the end of January. It is said to surpass DeepSeek-V3 (performance metrics unknown).

Diebold Nixdorf announced Wednesday that its board of directors has authorized a new share repurchase program, under which it may repurchase up to $100 million of common stock.
&#8220;Our team delivered strong financial performance in 2024, driven by our meaningful operational improvements, continued disciplined approach to capital allocation and balance sheet management, as well as strong free cash flow generation — the highest we have generated in nearly 10 years,&#8221; Octavio Marquez, Diebold Nixdorf president and CEO said.
&#8220;The progress we made enabled us to pay down $338 million of debt throughout the year and initiate a $100 million share repurchase program, underscoring our commitment to return significant value to our stockholders,&#8221; he added.

The company exited the quarter with cash and equivalents worth $311.3 million and inventories worth $528.1 million. Long-term debt as of quarter end totals $927.3 million.
In 2025, the company expects flat to low single-digit revenue growth, adjusted EBITDA in the range of $470 million to $490 million, and free cash flow of $190 million to $210 million.
Outlook: Total revenue guidance expects low single-digit growth in banking and retail (constant currency), with retail picking up in the second half of 2025. There will be a 3%-4% ($115 million) negative impact from foreign exchange, and revenue is expected to be more concentrated in the second half of the year (45% in the first half, 55% in the second half).
