Following a sluggish session on Thursday and a fall on Wednesday after the Fed&#8217;s <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/12/42563299/feds-powell-shocks-markets-its-a-new-phase-were-significantly-closer-to-neutral">hawkish</a> rate cut, Wall Street is now bracing for Friday&#8217;s &#8220;Triple Witching&#8221; session which is slated to see about $6.6 trillion options to expire.
What Happened: The &#8220;Triple Witching&#8221; hour is a quarterly event that occurs during the final hour of trade on the third Friday of March, June, September, and December. During this period, contracts for stock index futures, stock index options, and stock options all expire at the same time.
According to the Singapore-based broker, uSMART, Friday, Dec. 20 marks the notorious &#8216;Triple Witching&#8217; day, when the total options contracts worth $5.2 trillion on the S&amp;P 500 index, $710 billion worth of contracts on single stocks and $735 billion worth of contracts on the Nasdaq 100, Russell 200 and others are set to expire.

The total $6.6 trillion worth of option contracts can be further divided into four categories. Here&#8217;s what they include:

<li>$685 billion notional worth of options on futures.</li>
<li>$745 billion notional worth of options on exchange-traded funds.</li>
<li>$710 billion notional worth of contracts on single stocks.</li>

&#8220;The timing of buying the dip is complicated by options expiration tomorrow and Christmas next week, but a recovery by the end of the year would not surprise anyone,&#8221; said Louis Navellier, founder of Navellier &amp; Associates.

Why It Matters: This &#8220;Triple Witching&#8221; convergence can lead to heightened market volatility as traders close, roll over, or offset their expiring contracts, often resulting in unusual price movements and increased trading volumes.
Looking back at the last few triple-witching events, the S&amp;P 500, tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), has struggled during these high-stakes trading days.

<li>Sept. 20, 2024: Decline of 0.2%.</li>
<li>Jun. 21, 2024: Decline of 0.5%.</li>
<li>Mar. 15, 2024: Decline of 1%.</li>
<li>Dec. 15, 2023: Decline of 0.6%.</li>

Tech stocks, represented by the Invesco QQQ Trust ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), fell in the last three triple-witching occasions, dropping 0.19% in September, 0.8% in June and 1.2% in March, while surging 0.5% in December 2023.
Price Action: U.S. stock futures declined, ahead of the &#8216;Triple Witching&#8217; Friday. All four major indices were trading lower.
In premarket trading, the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust was down 1.05% to $579.97 and the Invesco QQQ Trust ETF fell 1.26% to $507.68, according to <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/dashboard">Benzinga Pro data</a>.

On Thursday, December 19, U.S. markets closed mixed after initial gains faded. Stocks mainly remained flat as the Fed forecasted fewer 2025 rate cuts and higher inflation. Jobless claims fell, and Q3 GDP was revised to 3.1%, supporting the Fed&#8217;s view. The Dow ended its 10-session losing streak.
The U.S. economy grew 3.1% in Q3, revised from 2.8% while existing home sales rose 4.8% in November to 4.15 million. Initial jobless claims fell by 22,000 to 220,000 in early December, below estimates of 230,000.
Most S&amp;P 500 sectors ended lower, led by losses in materials, real estate, and energy. In contrast, utilities and financials outperformed, closing the session higher.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.04% and closed at 42,342.24, the S&amp;P 500 closed lower by 0.09% at 5,867.08, and the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.10% to finish at 19,372.77.

<li>On Friday, Japan&#8217;s Nikkei 225 declined 0.22% and ended the session at 38,723.50, led by losses in the Communication, Steel, and Transportation Equipment sectors shares.</li>
<li>Australia&#8217;s S&amp;P/ASX 200 fell 1.24% and ended the day at 8,067.00, led by losses in the Consumer Discretionary, Financials and Gold sectors.</li>

Fennec Pharmaceuticals Inc. PEDMARQSI&nbsp;is the first and only approved therapy in the EU and&nbsp;U.K. for the prevention of ototoxicity, or hearing loss, induced by cisplatin chemotherapy in patients 1 month to &lt;18 years of age with localized, non-metastatic solid tumors. In March 2024, Fennec entered into an exclusive licensing agreement under which Norgine will commercialize&nbsp;PEDMARQSI&#xAE;&nbsp;in&nbsp;Europe,&nbsp;Australia, and New Zealand.
"Securing access to PEDMARQSI is a critical milestone for the cancer community in England and Wales to help reduce the risk of ototoxicity, or permanent hearing loss, associated with cisplatin treatment," said&nbsp;Jeff Hackman, chief executive officer and director of Fennec Pharmaceuticals. "We congratulate Norgine on their collaboration with NICE to reach this important agreement that recognizes the value of ototoxicity intervention as part of the cancer treatment journey."
Under the terms of the <a href="https://investors.fennecpharma.com/news-releases/news-release-details/fennec-pharmaceuticals-and-norgine-enter-exclusive-licensing">previously announced</a> exclusive licensing agreement with Norgine, Fennec received approximately $43 million in an upfront payment and will receive up to approximately $230 million in additional commercial and regulatory milestone payments along with double-digit tiered royalties on net sales of PEDMARQSI starting in the mid-teens and growing to the mid-twenties.
