Meyer Burger Technology AG&nbsp;(OTC:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/MYBUF#OTC">MYBUF</a>) is a Swiss solar company that <a href="https://www.pv-tech.org/news/meyer-burger-beats-revenue-guidance-for-2017">mainly focuses</a> on photovoltaics but also has exposure to the semiconductor and optoelectronic industries and high-end markets based on semiconductor materials.

The Vertical Research Group&#39;s Gordon Johnson initiated coverage of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/mybuf">Meyer Burger Technology&#39;s stock</a> with a Buy rating and a price target equivalent to $2.67 per share.&nbsp;

	The Thesis</h3>
Despite returning more than 110 percent over the past year, shares of Meyer Burger have room for more upside, Johnson said in the initiation note.
This is justified by expectations for a &quot;material increase&quot; in the company&#39;s new orders and backlogs, the analyst said. PV prices are expected to continue moving lower through the first half of 2018 and, as a consequence, downstream vendors are &quot;in an effective arms race to avoid becoming the marginal cost producer,&quot; Johnson said.&nbsp;
The <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/topic/solar">solar company&#39;s stock</a>&nbsp;is likely to continue to outperform its peers over the next one-to-two-year period, the analyst said. The analyst&#39;s price target is based on a forward EV/EBITDA valuation that could be achieved by the close of 2018 and implies upside potential of nearly 30 percent, he said.&nbsp;

President-elect <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/topic/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a> has never shied away from offering glimpses of what his energy policy would look like. 
<a href="http://www.benzinga.com/topic/gordon-johnson">Gordon Johnson,</a> a notable solar analyst, cited the U.S. election results as one of a small handful of reasons why he downgraded the entire solar sector to Market Underweight with a Sell rating on all 10 stocks he covers in the sector.
<h3>Trump's Policies Aren't Favorable For Solar</h3>
Johnson noted that solar power is still quite expensive when factoring in the cost of providing electricity when the sun is not shining, which explains why government incentives are necessary for solar companies.
A Trump administration <a href="https://www.technologyreview.com/s/602833/trumps-impact-on-clean-energy-businesses/">could signal to the world</a> that solar is no longer a priority, given the following four reasons:
<ul><ol><li>Trump tapped Myron Ebell, a climate change skeptic, to head his EPA transition team.</li>
<li>Trump plans on scrapping the Clean Power Plan.</li>
<li>Trump plans on repealing all federal spending on clean energy.</li>
<li>Trump wants to remove the United States from the Paris Climate Deal.</li></ol></ul>
<h3>China's Top-Runner Program</h3>
China's top-runner program is designed to improve technology through higher efficiency panels inside China and is set up as a reverse auction structure. Chinese module vendors submit bids, and the lowest bid wins the project. Some of the submitted bids came in as low as $0.459/W, which compares to Tier 1 manufacturers' all-in production costs in a range of $0.43 to $0.46/W.
As such, the company that submitted a $0.459/W bid will likely lose money on the net income line, especially when factoring in OPEX and interest expenses.
<h3>Chinese Firms Are Artificially Boosting Prices</h3>
Johnson noted that several large Chinese vendors recently decided to take their capacity offline for maintenance purposes in October, which artificially adds price appreciation.
The analyst suggested the move was decided after 19 consecutive weeks of poly-Si price declines &mdash; or perhaps due to price collusion in China.

Gordon Johnson's Solar Stock Universe Is Yelling Sell, Sell, Sell

SunGard&#39;s <a href="https://www.sungard.com/solutions/market-data/astec-analytics">Astec Analytics</a> provides intraday short-selling market data via securities lending analytics. In a recent note sent to customers, the firm shared a &ldquo;roundup of some of the hottest stocks from a securities lending perspective.&rdquo;

	Below is a look at the top stocks by region (from a security lending perspective), according to SunGard&#39;s Karl Loomes.
<h3>EMEA Hot Stocks</h3>

	Astec Analytics&rsquo; top pick in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region is Thorntons PLC (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/thtpf#OTC">THTPF</a>), a micro-cap, United Kingdom-based, multi-channel confectionery retailer. The selection was based on the &pound;112 million takeover bid that Italian chocolatier Ferrero made for the company, which triggered a surge of more than 40 percent in its share price on Monday.

	On the borrowing front, the firm&rsquo;s data suggests &ldquo;short sellers have actually been growing more optimist for Thorntons since the beginning of June, in which time the number of shares being borrowed &ndash; the prerequisite for short selling them &ndash; has fallen 11 percent, with Friday&#39;s session alone seeing more than a 6 percent drop.&rdquo;
