Idaho, the last U.S. state to legalize industrial hemp in April 2021, has significant potential to become a national leader in hemp cultivation. 
However, restrictive regulations are slowing the industry's growth, leaving farmers frustrated and cautious.
"Everyone&#8217;s nervous that it&#8217;s marijuana, or that it&#8217;s weed, or it&#8217;s a stepping stone to weed, but it&#8217;s a stepping stone to industrial building," said Triston Sponseller, one of Idaho's largest hemp farmers in an <a href="https://www.ktvb.com/article/news/agriculture/inside-ag/inside-ag-idaho-could-thrive-hemp-growing-giant-weed-out-restrictions/277-dd47e4aa-d290-476e-9f62-f9b11ab48790">article</a> by Hunter Frank on KTVB7. 
His operations in Roberts focus on <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cannabis/23/01/30577461/we-need-hemp-based-fiber-food-and-building-materials-not-just-cbd-says-industry-report">hemp fiber</a>, showcasing the crop's <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cannabis/24/08/40418137/industrial-hemps-14b-projected-growth-an-investment-opportunity-too-good-to-miss">industrial applications</a> rather than THC or CBD production.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Navigating Stringent Regulations</h3>
Idaho's hemp laws mandate that crops test below 0.3% THC. 
This year, Sponseller's crop tested at 0.8%, forcing him to remove seed heads and bear the cost. 
Like others, he used certified seeds that passed in other states but failed Idaho's stricter requirements. Under the state's "three strikes" rule, farmers exceeding THC limits three times in five years are banned from growing hemp for another five years.
"It was certified when it came from overseas, and it didn&#8217;t go hot in Colorado," Sponseller explained, emphasizing the challenges of complying with Idaho's rules. Testing and remediation costs further deter expansion. "I can&#8217;t grow 2,000 acres of hemp and afford 20, 30 different tests for each field," he added.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Promise Of Hemp In Idaho</h3>
Despite the hurdles, hemp farming in Idaho has quadrupled in acreage since 2022, according to the Idaho State Department of Agriculture (ISDA).
Farmers like Sponseller say they&#8217;re optimistic, pointing to hemp's versatility, water efficiency and benefits to soil health. At Sponseller's Rexburg facility, hemp stalks are processed into materials like insulation, paper, and landscaping products.
"For being a plant grown in a field, it&#8217;s impressive how strong it is; just its natural qualities," Sponseller said.

Idaho&#8217;s hemp cultivators plan to lobby lawmakers this winter to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cannabis/24/09/40833963/expert-calls-for-a-united-hemp-and-cannabis-front-industries-should-collaborate-and-push-for-fed">ease regulations</a>, which could unlock hemp's potential to create jobs and boost the state&#8217;s economy. "Idaho has the highest restrictions in terms of remediation in probably most of the states in the U.S.," Sponseller said, noting that reforms could help farmers scale operations and attract manufacturing.
While progress is slow, he remains hopeful. "It&#8217;s new and it&#8217;s evolving, but it is moving forward." 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Proposed Farm Bill Changes </h3>
A recent new proposal from Senate Agriculture Chair Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) in the 2024 Farm Bill could significantly alter the regulatory landscape for hemp farmers, but in the opposite direction Sponseller is fighting for. 
Released Monday, the bill redefines THC regulations, replacing Delta-9 THC with total THC, explicitly including THC-A in the calculation. While maintaining the 0.3% THC threshold, the method for measurement is revised, creating a stricter environment for industrial hemp but preserving low-THC product pathways, such as CBD.
This change contrasts with the House Agriculture Committee&#8217;s version, which sought a complete ban on THC in hemp products.

The "Bubble Economy" Explained
Schiff argues that the U.S. economy has been in a bubble for decades. "What's been going on is that the government has been sustaining a bubble economy," Schiff stated. "It really took hold with Bush, reacting to the bursting of the dot-com bubble in 2001. Reckless policies have continued for over 20 years." According to Schiff, this pattern of debt-driven consumption has left the economy in an unsustainable state.
He elaborates that the Federal Reserve's monetary policies and unchecked fiscal deficits have propped up this bubble economy. "The whole economy is built on debt and consumption and it's going to implode because it's unsustainable," he said.

Why Bitcoin Doesn't Make the Cut
Schiff's skepticism toward Bitcoin remains firm. He <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/24/08/40318568/mark-cuban-says-to-get-rich-invest-10-of-savings-in-high-risk-investments-but-if-its-bitcoin-thr">dismisses the cryptocurrency as "fool's gold</a>," designed to mimic some of gold's monetary properties but lacking its intrinsic value.
"People think that I don't own Bitcoin because I don't understand it," Schiff quipped. "No, I understand it precisely. That's why I don't own it. It's the people who own it that don't understand it – that's why they own it."
Schiff criticizes <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/24/03/37513063/warren-buffett-says-he-wouldnt-pay-25-for-all-the-bitcoin-in-the-world-he-considers-crypto-rat-poiso">Bitcoin for being nothing more than a speculative asset</a>. "The only money made is by transferring wealth from new buyers to old sellers," he claimed, calling it a classic pyramid scheme.
When pressed on what would make him change his mind, Schiff replied, "If Bitcoin actually replaces fiat currencies as a unit of account and a medium of exchange – if I walk into a supermarket and everything is priced in Bitcoin–I'd admit I was wrong. But it's no closer to being money today than it was when it started."
Gold and Silver: The Safer Bet
Schiff remains a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/startups/24/08/40290032/robert-kiyosaki-believes-the-dollars-days-are-numbered-china-and-japan-are-trading-bonds-for-gold-he">steadfast advocate for gold and silver</a>, seeing them as the ultimate hedge against inflation. He noted that central banks are already increasing their gold reserves, signaling confidence in its long-term value.
"Gold is approaching record highs, but silver is still a bargain at around $33 an ounce," he said. Schiff believes silver could see significant gains in the years ahead, particularly as retail investors return.
He also encouraged investors to consider mining stocks, which he likened to "the next crypto," offering high returns without the speculative risks of digital currencies.

Taobao and Tmall Group revenue grew by 1% to $14.11 billion. Alibaba International Digital Commerce Group revenue increased by 29% to $4.51 billion, driven by the growth of cross-border businesses.
Benchmark&#8217;s Fawne Jiang maintained a Buy rating on Alibaba with a price target of $118, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/11/42043480/alibabas-monetization-strategy-gains-momentum-but-gmv-growth-lags-analyst" rel="noreferrer noopener">citing mixed earnings performance</a>.
While customer management revenue grew 2.5% YoY, sluggish GMV growth and increased investments in Taobao and Tmall raise concerns over market share retention. The analyst expects improved monetization from software service fees and expanded Quanzhantui marketing use in upcoming quarters, aiding profitability. Fiscal 2025 revenue and EBITDA estimates were slightly reduced due to margin pressures but reflect confidence in the gradual recovery and user acquisition.

What To Know: Luminar shareholders voted to approve a proposal regarding a reverse stock split at the end of October. On Nov. 13, Luminar&#8217;s board approved the reverse split at a ratio of 1-for-15. The split went into effect after the market close on Wednesday.
The reverse stock split was authorized by the company's board as part of a larger strategy to improve the company&#8217;s stock price and potentially attract more institutional investors. The adjusted shares began trading Thursday under the same ticker symbol: &#8220;LAZR.&#8221;
In addition to the reverse stock split, Luminar recently announced that it appointed Dominick Schiano as a new member of its board. Schiano, known for his experience in the automotive industry and as a dealmaker, is expected to contribute valuable strategic insights to the company. He will also join Luminar&#8217;s Audit Committee.
Luminar provided a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/11/41888873/luminar-technologies-stock-is-rising-after-hours-whats-driving-the-action">business update</a> for the third quarter earlier this month. The lidar company said it shipped more product in the third quarter than it did in the past three quarters combined.
"Today nearly every major automaker has LiDAR planned into their roadmaps, and our commercial growth this quarter is a testament to both our technical leadership and ability to execute to global automaker standards," Luminar founder and CEO Austin Russell said in the company&#8217;s earnings release.
"This quarter, we've further restructured Luminar to withstand near-term headwinds facing the industry so we are better positioned to capitalize on the long-term value in this trillion-dollar industry."

What's Going On With Luminar Technologies Stock Thursday?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) head of vaccine safety says that President-elect Donald Trump's embrace of vaccine skeptics could be an opportunity for the science community to teach the public about the value of these life-saving drugs. However, if these efforts fail it could lead to "natural consequences."
The FDA's Peter Marks made the remarks Thursday at the Jefferies London Healthcare Conference. Marks is the current director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) at the FDA. The center ensures the safety and effectiveness of biological products, including vaccines.
Marks said now is the chance for scientists to make the case for vaccines, as Trump has named noted anti-vaccine crusader Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as his pick to be the next Secretary of Health and Human Services.
Bloomberg is also reporting that Trump is likely to pick surgeon and public health researcher Marty Makary as the next head of the FDA. Previously, Makary has criticized the agency's approval of COVID-19 booster vaccines. Additionally, he has written several op-eds on the pandemic including one claiming that the U.S. would achieve <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/well-have-herd-immunity-by-april-11613669731">herd immunity by April 2021 </a>and a more recent one arguing that vaccines shouldn't be <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/biden-waves-another-covid-shot-through-fda-human-outcomes-data-195731c0">recommended universally</a> for lower-risk patients.
Marks said that if public health officials fail to make the case for vaccines there will be consequences.
"If that doesn't work, and everything runs wild in the opposite direction, just as your kids learn natural consequences — if you put your hand on a hot oven, you will get burned, et cetera, that kind of thing — the American public will learn the natural consequences of what happens if vaccination rates fall too far, because we will start to see measles, polio, things that we should never see in a well-developed country, come back," said Marks, who was speaking virtually at the conference, <a href="https://www.statnews.com/2024/11/21/peter-marks-fda-rfk-jr-vaccine-safety/">STAT reported</a>.
Marks said he expects a vigorous debate on COVID-19 vaccines and pediatric vaccines but hopes a "degree of moderation will prevail" on the topic of vaccines overall.

Bitcoin Close To $100,000 — Could It Happen Today?

Summit Materials shares are trading higher following a repot suggesting Quikrete is in talks to acquire the company.

Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy are targeting lowering government spending with the newly announced Department of Government Efficiency (or D.O.G.E. for short). An aircraft component company is named as the perfect place for the duo to start in a new short report from <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/the-bear-cave">The Bear Cave.</a>
What Happened: President-elect Donald Trump<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/24/11/41927289/trump-appoints-elon-musk-and-vivek-ramaswamy-to-lead-doge-targeting-bureaucracy-and-65-trillion-federal-spending-we-will-not-go-gently"> announced the Department of Government Efficiency</a> recently and Musk said the new department will "send shockwaves through the system, and involve anyone involved in government waste."
A short <a href="https://thebearcave.substack.com/p/problems-at-transdigm-tdg">report </a>from The Bear Cave author Edwin Dorsey suggests the D.O.G.E. should start with aircraft component company TransDigm (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TDG#NYSE">TDG</a>), which has a market capitalization of $72 billion.
The short report alleges TransDigm has used acquisitions to become the sole producer of some aircraft parts and in return raised prices for customers, which includes the Department of Defense.
Benzinga reached out to TransDigm for comment and did not hear back at publication.
"Prices for TransDigm parts have increased 40%+ per year for decades and the company has faced numerous allegations of price gouging the U.S. government as well as allegations of accounting fraud," Dorsey writes.
Dorsey said hints from Musk and Ramaswamy suggest looking at government waste at the Pentagon.
"The Bear Cave also believes this will change under the incoming Trump Administration and that TransDigm should be target #1 for the Department of Government Efficiency."
Musk recently took notice of a tweet from Donald Trump Jr. that highlighted Boeing allegedly overcharging the Air Force, Dorsey added.
Ramaswamy suggested that large-scale audits at government agencies like the Pentagon could yield "significant savings."

TransDigm's Past History: The short report highlights a 2022 House Oversight Hearing on TransDigm.
"TransDigm manufactures a product called the linear actuating cap, which was used in the Eagle F-15 and C-125 transport aircraft. According to TransDigm, the part only cost $189 to make, but the company charged the Defense Department over $7,000," House Oversight Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) said at the time.
Maloney used a graphic to illustrate the markups in aircraft parts for the Department of Defense by TransDigm, the short report added.
The short report also highlighted a 2019 hearing about TransDigm which saw Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) accuse the company of acquiring other suppliers so it can raise prices for existing customers.
"You purchased a company that made a part for $5,500, solenoid, and then after you bought it the price went up to $11,790. The part only cost $3,000. So what is the additional value when you're purchasing this and raising the price?" Khanna previously asked.
While past congressional hearings didn't find TransDigm broke the law, past concerns over price gouging could put the company on the radar of Musk and Ramaswamy as the short report said.
The defense market makes up around 40% of TransDigm's revenue, with the Department of Defense a portion of that total, the report said.
TDG Price Action: TransDigm Group stock is down 3.09% to $1,253.06 Thursday versus a 52-week trading range of $949.99 to $1,451.32. TransDigm stock is up 30% year-to-date in 2024.
