WASHINGTON — A nickel mining district in southeastern Canada may one day rival Indonesia as the world's largest producer of the battery metal, Canada Nickel Co.'s (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CNIKF#OTC">CNIKF</a>) CEO Mark Selby said this month <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/mining">at a mining conference.</a>
The company's Crawford project near Timmins, a mining town in eastern Ontario, is its flagship property, but it is actively exploring seven other resource targets in the area with a drilling program to last into the third quarter 2024.
"Within a year from now, we'll have seven different resources published," Selby told Benzinga on the sidelines of a Benchmark Mineral Intelligence battery metals conference last week.

Canada Nickel&#8217;s Crawford property contains 3.8 million metric tons of proven and probable nickel reserves, ranking it second among the biggest nickel mines in the world, behind one in Russia but ahead of three in Indonesia.
The catch is that the other mines are already in production, while Canada Nickel says Crawford won't be in production until the tail end of 2027.
Remaining hurdles include getting permits from the federal and provincial governments, but Selby said the company is expecting to have all of those by this time next year. Canada Nickel is backed by investments from Agnico Eagle Mines (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AEM#NYSE">AEM</a>), Samsung SDI (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SSDIY#OTC">SSDIY</a>) and Anglo American (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NGLOY#OTC">NGLOY</a>).
If Canada Nickel can pull it off, having such a large nickel mine in North America would go a long way toward fulfilling Western government ambitions to build a battery supply chain that isn't dependent on China, which dominates nickel mining and refining through its investments in Indonesia, the world's biggest nickel producer.
Nickel, which is used to make stainless steel, is also a key ingredient in batteries that run electric vehicles.
In 2023, Canada produced 132.4 thousand metric tons of the metal, well behind Indonesia's 1.7 million, according to GlobalData and U.S. Geological Survey data. And while Crawford is bigger than those three individual mines in Indonesia, those mines combined dwarf its reserves, with 7.7 million metric tons of nickel.
That means the Timmins area has a long way to go before it competes with Indonesia on size, but Canada Nickel isn't the only company exploring for the battery metal in the area.

	Today, Pelangio Exploration (PX.V: TSX-V,  PX: TSX-V and <a href="http://www.zacks.com/stock/quote/PGXPF">PGXPF</a>) provided the company's exploration plans for its Ghana properties in 2011. The programs are aggressive, encompassing over 25,000 meters of diamond drilling, and should provide significant news flow throughout the year. Management believes that the assay results of prior drilling programs have only hinted at the potential at Manfo, a 100 square kilometer camp-sized property. To date, the gold mineralization encountered at Manfo appears to be similar to the multi-million ounce, near-surface, bulk tonnage mineralization found at Ahafo and Chirano, where Newmont Mining and Kinross, respectively, operate pit mines.  
	Of particular interest is the planned 10,000 meter diamond drilling program on the Obuasi property, which is located adjacent to and on strike with the Obuasi Mine, the world's largest vein hosted gold deposit. The Obuasi Mine has produced over 30 million ounces of gold since 1897 and still holds another 29.5 million ounces in reserves and resources. Management believes that the Obuasi Mine may have a series of high grade gold ore shoots with strike lengths of 80 to 200 meters and widths of three to 20 meters that extend into the company's property. The discovery of these high grade shoots would have dramatically positive ramifications for the stock's valuation.

	Today, Pelangio Exploration (<a href="http://www.zacks.com/stock/quote/PGXPF: OTCBB ">PGXPF: OTCBB </a>and <a href="http://www.zacks.com/stock/quote/PX: TSX-V">PX: TSX-V</a>) announced encouraging positive assay results from the second Manfo drilling program at the Pokukrom East and Nfante West gold exploration areas. The results strongly confirm that major mineralized systems of bulk tonnage deposits are on the Manfo property. At Pokukrom East, 1.36 grams per tonne (g/t) gold was discovered over 52 meters, including a higher grade zone of 3.47 g/t gold over 13 meters in drill hole SPDD-106, and in SPDD-107, 1.13 g/t gold over 72 meters was found, including a higher grade zone of 3.53 g/t gold over 11 meters. These intersections continue to confirm that the strike length of bulk tonnage at Pokukrom East is at least 500 meters, since the mineralization is consistent with the style of mineralization in holes to the north (SPDD-085, SPDD-086 and SPDD-089) and south (SPDD-087 and SPDD-088).
	At Nfante West on the Manfo property, drill hole SFDD-100 discovered 1.05 g/t gold over 23 meters, including a higher grade interval of 2.67 g/t gold over 8.0 meters. This hole appears to confirm a 100 meter northern extension of previously reported intersection of 1.50 g/t gold over 61 meters by drill hole SFDD-079.
	Pelangio recommenced its second drilling at Pokukrom East on January 16th and expects to complete further holes before moving to Pokukrom West. The company has completed 15 drill holes totaling 2,399 meters (of which the results of 10 holes totaling 1,638 meters was announced today) in this second phase drilling program on the Manfo Property, which is expected to total over 5,000 meters. Pelangio will release further assay results as they are received.
	Management's near-term goal is to discover and delineate as many gold mineralized zones as possible on the Manfo Property prior to a resource estimation. Also, trenching and geochemical surveying are currently being conducted. Pelangio has interpreted a 10 kilometer trend of anomalies from 800 meter spaced geochemical and geophysical surveying in the northwestern portion of the Manfo Property, while the southeastern portion of the Manfo Property is currently still being evaluated geochemically.
	Results from the second phase drilling program could potentially increase the stock's valuation, especially when the drilling program moves to where previous drilling encountered high grade intercepts at Pokukrom West. Our initial target remains $1.25.

	In a news release issued on January 4, 2011, Applied DNA Sciences, Inc. (<a href="http://www.zacks.com/stock/quote/APDN">APDN</a>), a provider of plant DNA-based security solutions, announced that the Company's DNA evidence was pivotal in helping West Midlands Police and Metropolitan Police Flying Squad in UK arrest and convict two cash-in-transit criminals.
	In the West Midlands, Colin Waddingham was found guilty of cash-in-transit robbery and associated offenses and sentenced to 11 years of imprisonment. He was found guilty by a unanimous jury verdict based, in part, on the SigNature® DNA evidence presented during the trial. SigNature DNA was critical in linking the recovered cash to the defendant.  
	According to the police, Waddingham robbed a Loomis driver of a cash box at a Shell Petrol Station in Acocks Green, Birmingham (<a class="ticker" href="/stock/uk#">UK</a>). At the time of his arrest, police found in the car evidence from the robbery including one of the stolen cash bags, stolen dyed cash, the cloned number plates used in the robbery, the crowbar and a 12" machete in the driver's door well. Found in his wallet were further dyed notes from the robbery. The dyed notes were identified and traced back to the specific robbery as a result of the forensic DNA authentication of their taggant by APDN.
	In London, the DNA evidence provided by APDN's taggant assisted the Flying Squad in convicting Alpesh Daudia of two separate cash-in-transit crimes. Daudia was stopped on suspicion of a robbery and as the officers searched him, a wad of dye-stained cash fell to the ground from his waist. Forensic tests of the dye-stained cash found on Daudia, revealed that the cash was from an earlier cash-in-transit robbery. Although the police had not previously linked him to it, the APDN taggant provided forensic proof to conclusively connect Daudia to this unsolved cash-in-transit robbery from June 19, 2009.
	What Does This Mean to APDN?
	APDN is a biotech company engaged in the research, development and commercialization of botanical-DNA based security and authentication solutions that can help protect the products, brands and intellectual property of companies, governments and consumers from theft, counterfeiting, fraud and diversion.

Currently, a system of cash degradation, using a smoke or liquid dye to permanently mark and essentially destroy stolen cash, is used.  
	Applied DNA uses its proprietary SigNature DNA platform to offer a forensic security solution for banks and institutions operating in the cash-in-transit industry, including automated teller machine (ATM) operations and banknote transportation and storage.  The Company can embed SigNature DNA Markers into cash degradation inks that are placed in cash-in-transit boxes.  If a cash box is compromised or illegally accessed, the security device discharges the liquid cash degradation dye into the banknotes, which can be detected after the banknotes are recovered by police. One of the advantages of the SigNature DNA marker is that it's more substantive than dyes and persists even after exhaustive washing with powerful solvents.   
	       
	APDN has seen growing interest in its cash in transit services protection business. The Company's DNA platforms are gaining new markets in military and police applications in response to its reliable performance in cash in transit services. The Company recently has been fielding inquires for its cash protection platform throughout Europe and Asia.

	Today, we initiate coverage of Pelangio Exploration (<a href="http://www.zacks.com/stock/quote/PGXPF">PGXPF</a>) and (PX: TSX-V), with an outperform rating.

	Pelangio is a Toronto-based junior gold exploration company proceeding with drilling programs in Ghana, where the company has two properties: Manfo and Obuasi. Very encouraging positive assay results from the first Manfo drilling program, which were announced in September and October, significantly increased shareholder value with the stock rallying from $0.41 to over $1.00. Notably high-grade intersections of ~8 g/t gold over 12 meter intervals were discovered.

	Additionally, the first drilling program indicates there may be bulk tonnage potential along a minimum 500-meter strike length. Results from the second phase drilling program totaling over 5,000 meters could potentially increase the stock's valuation even further. Furthermore, management plans on implementing a second phase 5,000 meter drilling program on the company's Obuasi property in early 2011. Our initial target is $1.25.
