QIAGEN (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QGEN#NYSE">QGEN</a>, Frankfurt Prime Standard: QIA)))) today announced a cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA) with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to develop a novel test for its QIAcuity digital PCR devices that will boost forensics by improving the quantification of DNA in human samples.
The collaboration aims to develop a first-of-its-kind digital PCR (dPCR) assay that can simultaneously quantify in absolute terms nuclear and mitochondrial DNA concentrations, male DNA, and include quality markers for degradation and inhibition.
Forensic samples often contain very small amounts of DNA, which can be further compromised by age or environmental factors such as soil. Compared to traditional quantitative PCR, dPCR offers a higher tolerance to inhibitors and enables forensic specialists to detect and quantify even minimal amounts of DNA with high accuracy. This capability significantly improves the success rate of forensic analysis while saving time and money.
Accurate DNA quantification in casework samples is also crucial for informed workflow decisions in successful next-generation sequencing (NGS) analysis. By using the appropriate amount of DNA in library preparation, sequencing errors or biases are minimized. NGS is particularly important for analyzing mitochondrial DNA in traces without nuclear DNA, such as shed hairs, aged bones and teeth, or environmentally exposed samples. This analysis plays a critical role in identifying human remains.
CRADAs enable the sharing of resources and expertise for collaborative research that advances the FBI mission. "The FBI conducts research to develop new capabilities that advance forensic science. This novel digital PCR assay could benefit the FBI and other forensic laboratories. We are excited to collaborate with QIAGEN to evaluate the potential of this capability in forensic casework," said Eric Pokorak, Assistant Director, FBI Laboratory Division.
"QIAGEN is proud to be working with the FBI Laboratory Division to create one of the first forensic assays able to quantify mitochondrial DNA," said Richard Price, Vice President and head of the HID and Forensics business at QIAGEN. "Better DNA quantification will allow the FBI's scientists and the forensic community to analyze a broader range of evidence more quickly, accurately and reliably, even from challenging samples. This advance in forensic science proves the relevance of dPCR in enhancing the reliability and impact of forensic evidence in convicting the guilty and exonerating the innocent."
QIAGEN's QIAcuity platform uses nanoplates to disperse a sample over thousands of tiny partitions and then read the reaction in each one simultaneously to quantify even the faintest genetic traces. The dPCR technology used in QIAcuity provides precise, binary results by counting the presence or absence of DNA molecules, resulting in a low error rate and high precision necessary for courtroom testimony.&nbsp;
The QIAcuity systems – available in one, four and eight-plate versions – integrate partitioning, thermocycling, and imaging into one workflow, cutting processing times to only two hours from six. With multiplexing capabilities of up to 5-plex,&nbsp;the one-plate version can process up to 384 samples in an eight-hour shift and the eight-plate version up to 1,248. At the end of 2023, more than 2,000 cumulative instrument placements had been made.

These reports have shown a higher-than-average percentage of companies exceeding earnings expectations and by a larger margin than usual.
FactSet estimates that S&amp;P 500 companies&#8217; blended year-over-year earnings growth is currently at 5%, up from 3.5% the prior week. This is the highest growth rate since Q2 2022.
Eight out of eleven S&amp;P 500 sectors are experiencing earnings growth. Communication services, utilities, consumer discretionary, and IT are leading the pack, while energy, healthcare, and materials are lagging behind.

This turnkey service supports all QIAGEN QIAseq panels and seamlessly integrates with QCI Interpret, QIAGEN's clinical variant interpretation and reporting software, to deliver highly scalable and customizable Sample to Insight workflows for oncology and inherited disease applications.
Typically, sequencing data is processed in three phases: After the signals registered by the NGS device have initially been translated into digital information (primary analysis), the DNA fragments encoded must be merged into a connected sequence and analyzed for variants in relation to a human reference genome (secondary analysis). In the third and final step (tertiary analysis), the identified variants are interpreted in the context of a specific clinical picture.

U.S. stocks kicked off the week on a positive note, with all major averages edging higher in anticipation of significant events including earnings reports from tech giants like Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) on Tuesday and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) on Thursday, a pivotal Federal Reserve Open Market Committee meeting on Wednesday, and the April&#8217;s <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/labor-market">jobs report on Friday.</a>
The S&amp;P 500 rose 0.2% by midday trading in New York, following a 1% surge last Friday. Both the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 and blue-chip stocks in the Dow Jones made similar gains. 
Small caps, as tracked by iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>), outperformed large-cap stocks, rising as much as 0.9%. 
Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) grabbed the market spotlight by securing a significant partnership with Chinese search engine giant Baidu Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BIDU#NYSE">BIDU</a>), which granted the Elon Musk-led company access to its mapping license for data collection <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/04/38491516/teslas-model-3-and-model-y-clear-chinas-data-security-hurdle-fsd-software-deployment-nears">on China&#8217;s public roads. </a> 
The deal removes a last regulatory barrier for Tesla&#8217;s driver assistance system, known as Full Self-Driving (FSD), to be introduced in China. Shares of Tesla rose as much as 16% Monday. 
The Bank of Japan sent shockwaves through the forex exchange market by intervening to support the value of the Japanese yen, which had plummeted to as low as <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/asia/24/04/38494691/japan-intervenes-to-support-struggling-yen-why-did-it-trigger-nikkei-225-dip-4-charts-to-watch">160 per dollar overnight.</a> This action spurred a significant reversal in the USD/JPY exchange rate, plunging to as low as 155 by 1 p.m. ET.
In the commodities market, natural gas prices jumped by nearly 7% on improved demand forecasts, with the U.S. Henry Hub futures surpassing $2 per million British thermal units. 
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) was 0.5% lower, on track to notch a six-day losing streak.

Cues From Past Week&#8217;s Trading:
U.S. stocks rebounded strongly in the week ended April 26, thanks to the optimism generated by strong corporate profit growth. The Nasdaq Composite and the S&amp;P 500 Index entered the week with six straight sessions of losses and bargain hunting lifted the major averages early in the week. Although the indices suffered inflation jitters in the middle of the week, the earnings catalyst helped a strong comeback in the final session.
The Nasdaq Composite and the S&amp;P 500 Index snapped four-week and three-week losing streaks, respectively, and finished at their best closing levels since April 12.

April may have been a blip on the radar. With two more sessions to go, there is a possibility that the major indices can inflect higher.
Tom Lee of FundStrat recommended buying the dip, predicating it on the Fed maintaining a dovish bias at the May monetary policy meeting. &#8220;Buy the dip regime in effect as long as #Fed is not a #hawk,&#8221; he said.
Upcoming Economic Data:
The week&#8217;s economic calendar will be headlined by the Federal Open Market Committee&#8217;s rate decision due on Wednesday. A pause verdict has been factored in by the market, but traders will closely watch the language used in the post-meeting policy statement and Chairman Jerome Powell&#8217;s press conference.
A slew of labor market data are also due for the week, including the all-important non-farm payrolls report, ADP&#8217;s private payroll report, first-quarter productivity and costs data, the results of the Labor Department&#8217;s job opening and labor turnover survey and the weekly jobless claims data. 
The other key data includes the Conference Board&#8217;s consumer confidence reading, the Institute for Supply Management&#8217;s manufacturing purchasing managers&#8217; index, a regional manufacturing activity reading and the results of two house price surveys. After the Fed&#8217;s blackout period expires, traders will also get to hear from some Fed officials.
On Monday, the Dallas Fed manufacturing index is due to be released at 10:30 a.m. EDT.
The Treasury will auction three- and six-month bills at 11:30 a.m. EDT.

US Stocks Set To Approach New Week With Caution Ahead Of Fed Meeting, Tech Earnings: Analyst Says 'Buy The Dip' Contingent On This Condition

Corporate <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/04/38471231/strong-quarterly-earnings-fuel-market-optimism-despite-inflation-concerns-slowing-economic-growt">earnings came to the market&#8217;s rescue in the past week,</a> helping to overcome rate fears. As we look ahead to the unfolding week, it remains to be seen whether the tech earnings deluge can keep the rally&#8217;s momentum going. 
The Week That Was: High-profile Magnificent Seven earnings panned out mostly positively for the market, with Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>) the outlier. The social media giant&#8217;s stock fell sharply as traders fretted over the soft second-quarter revenue guidance and the company&#8217;s massive AI investment plans. 
Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) managed to appease the Street despite the double miss as it held out the promise of an expeditious launch of a more affordable EV. 
With the earnings season now halfway through, the percentage of S&amp;P 500 companies reporting positive earnings surprises and the magnitude of earnings surprises were above their 10-year averages, <a href="https://insight.factset.com/sp-500-earnings-season-update-april-26-2024?utm_source=Direct&amp;utm_medium=Email&amp;utm_campaign=FO-04-26-2024&amp;utm_content=httpsinsightfactsetcomsp500earningsseasonupdateapril262024">said </a>FactSet in a report.
The blended first-quarter earnings growth of S&amp;P 500 companies is estimated at 3.5%, up from the 0.6% growth estimated in the week ended April 19, the financial data analytics firm said. If the trend holds, the S&amp;P 500 companies are on track to report earnings growth for the third straight quarter.
Of the 11 S&amp;P sector classes, eight sectors reported year-over-year earnings growth, led by communication services, utilities, IT, and consumer discretionary sectors. On the other hand, healthcare, energy, and materials have reported year-over-year earnings declines.

Look Ahead: The unfolding week will see 175 S&amp;P 500 companies and 6 Dow 30 components releasing their quarterly scorecards. The earnings roster includes two Magnificent Seven companies, namely Apple, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) and Amazon, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>), e-commerce retailers, payment processors, restaurants, and energy and REIT companies.
Earnings from Apple and Amazon could be market-moving, given the weighting of these stocks in the S&amp;P 500 Index. Also, Apple is considered a bellwether, given its exposure to consumers. Morgan Stanley&#8217;s Erik Woodring expects Apple to report a slightly beat but guide June quarter revenue down. 
Investors are likely to keep a close eye on performance in China, Apple&#8217;s updated capital return framework, and capital expenditures, the analyst said.
