President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he will impose new 25% <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/02/43583123/trump-to-announce-25-steel-and-aluminum-tariffs-economist-warns-president-is-making-us-manufacturing-globally-uncompetitive">tariffs</a> on all steel and aluminum imports, adding to existing duties, in a further escalation of his trade policy. While this could impact domestic steel and aluminum companies, investors can consider the following list of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) to trade following the development.
What Happened: On his way to the NFL Super Bowl in New Orleans, Trump spoke to reporters on Air Force One, and said he would reveal the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/02/43583123/trump-to-announce-25-steel-and-aluminum-tariffs-economist-warns-president-is-making-us-manufacturing-globally-uncompetitive">new tariffs</a> on Monday, followed by reciprocal tariffs on Tuesday or Wednesday, matching the rates imposed by other countries.
Tariffs impact domestic companies by influencing costs, competitiveness, and supply chains
According to a report by the First National Bank of Omaha and the think tank Council on Foreign Relations, the negative effects of tariffs include increased input costs, reduced competitiveness, disruption in supply chains, retaliation, diversion in investment, and reduced consumer spending. On the positive side, tariffs may temporarily protect domestic industries and generate government revenue.
Investors should look out for the following metal ETFs as Trump is likely to impose tariffs on imports.

Iron ore, a key ingredient in steelmaking, saw its prices rise 0.71% in Singapore around 3:43 p.m. local time, while aluminum futures on the Comex gained 0.49%.

Why It Matters: Although Trump initially paused tariffs on Canada and Mexico, he has renewed threats by specifically targeting metals in his media interactions on Sunday.
According to the American Iron and Steel Institute&#8217;s January <a href="https://www.steel.org/2025/02/aisi-releases-january-sima-imports-data-4/">data</a>, the U.S. gets most of its imported steel from Canada, Brazil, and Mexico, followed by South Korea and Vietnam. 
&#8220;Canadian steel and aluminum support key industries in the U.S., from defence, shipbuilding, and auto,&#8221; said the Canadian Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, Francois-Philippe Champagne, in an X post.

Citing the risks of these metal tariffs, Joseph Brusuelas, the principal and chief economist at RSM US said that other countries could follow to protect their economies, and a much larger trade war could ensue after these impositions by Trump.

On Friday, February 7, U.S. markets closed lower after Trump announced plans for reciprocal tariffs amid weak jobs data and declining consumer sentiment. Despite early struggles, strong earnings provided some support. Consumer sentiment hit a seven-month low, inflation expectations surged, and job growth slowed, reinforcing expectations that the Fed will delay rate cuts until June.
The University of Michigan reported a sharp rise in inflation expectations, with the one-year outlook hitting 4.3%, the highest since November 2023. February&#8217;s jobs report showed mixed results: job growth slowed, but unemployment dropped more than expected, and wages surged.
All S&amp;P 500 sectors ended in the red, led by losses in communication services, consumer discretionary, and materials stocks.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.99% and closed at 44,303.40, the S&amp;P 500 closed lower by 0.95% at 6,025.99, and the Nasdaq Composite fell 1.36% to finish at 19,523.40.

Asia Markets Mixed, Europe Advances, Gold Hits Record High On Safe-Haven Demand - Global Markets Today While US Slept

Recent cruise ship blunders have seemingly beleaguered the industry, as Royal Caribbean (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/rcl#NYSE">RCL</a>) reported a massive loss in its second-quarter earnings call this morning. The vacation-destination cruise line company experienced a net loss of $3.6 million, crediting overseas discounts for much of the defeat. 

Atop the two cents per share drop, management lowered third-quarter guidance for the floundering company as well. As Royal Caribbean sails into its third-quarter, net yields are expected to decrease about five percent on an as-reported basis. 

Headwinds will continue to blow strong throughout the rest of 2012 as the U.S. Dollar gains strength and a market-to-market loss on options is likely to cost the company about five cents per share throughout the end of the fiscal year. 

Europe's current economic and moral positions will likely not fare well for Royal Caribbean either, as much of the monetary loss overseas can be attributed to seething customers, still devastated over the <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/general/topics/12/01/2271055/carnival-corporations-stock-price-plummets-following-costa-cruise-crash">Carnival</a> (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ccl#NYSE">CCL</a>) Cruise Costa Concordia crash that claimed at least <a href="http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/03/22/costa-concordia-death-toll/">28 lives</a> in January.

However, according to a press release, Royal Caribbean Executive Vice President and CFO Brian J. Rice thinks perhaps the Costa Concordia crash is no longer affecting his company's financial situation, despite the peak booking period being severely impacted by the news. 

"It is hard to distinguish how much of the pressure in Europe is connected to the Costa Concordia incident and how much is due to the economic roller coaster," said Brian J. Rice, executive vice president and chief financial officer. 

Rice continued, "Our sense is that the former is no longer having a major impact on our bookings especially amongst experienced guests. However, the timing of the incident left a big gap during our peak booking period and filling that gap is disrupting our normal booking patterns."

Today, research firms reacted to the lower yield assumptions made by Royal Caribbean management. SEB Enskilda intends to cut 2012-13 earnings per share by 15 percent, while Terra noted that it is likely to lower estimates and target price for the share as well. 
 
Royal Caribbean has certainly taken undeserved heat for a crash its cruise line did not cause. As the company stays afloat during trying times, management can only hope that Carnival's next mishap will not flood the cruise company's revenues and profits.

Royal Caribbean is trading near $24 Thursday afternoon, down over 2 percent for the day thus far. Meanwhile, Carnival is trading around $32, down over 1 percent for the day.
