Calls for President Joe Biden to drop out of the 2024 election are growing, with key figures such as former President Barack Obama and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi privately holding talks of a possible <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/politics/24/07/39844101/pelosi-tells-biden-he-cant-beat-trump-shell-do-everything-in-her-power-to-prevent-2024-run">move by the president.</a>
While Biden remains in the presidential race, a new poll shows his opponent's lead is growing.
What Happened: For months, election polls showed a close race between Biden and former President Donald Trump. Since the first 2024 presidential debate, Trump gained in polls and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/politics/24/07/39780356/trumps-2024-election-betting-odds-hit-record-high-after-assassination-attempt-payouts-for-ex-pre">betting odds</a> from sportsbooks and prediction markets.
A new updated Morning Consult <a href="https://pro.morningconsult.com/trackers/2024-presidential-election-polling?utm_campaign=organic-social&amp;utm_content=1721329391&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter">poll </a>of nationally registered voters showed Trump growing his lead over Biden in the weeks after the first 2024 presidential debate and since the assassination attempt on the former president.
The new poll shows the following results from voters polled July 15 to July 17, with the results from <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/politics/24/07/39751217/trump-vs-biden-former-president-holds-2-point-lead-in-new-2024-election-poll-but-heres-whats-mos">the July 9 poll</a> in parentheses:

<li>Donald Trump: 46% (44%)</li>
<li>Someone Else: 8% (9%)</li>
<li>Don't Know: 5% (5%)</li>
</ul>
Of the Democratic voters polled, 85% have Biden as their top pick. That&#8217;s in line with the previous poll. Ninety-one percent of Republican voters polled have Trump as their top pick, which is up one percentage point from the previous poll.
Independent voters, who could decide the election, selected their 2024 pick as follows, with the July 2 results in parentheses:

Why It's Important: Biden continues to lose support in the weekly Morning Consult poll after the first presidential debate.
Biden was either ahead or tied with Trump for several weeks leading up to the first debate but fell behind the polls afterward.
The latest poll shows Trump with a four-point lead, marking his largest lead in the <a href="https://x.com/MorningConsult/status/1814013254127198263?t=1-MSeGbAr3bKKzvqYrS6iw&amp;s=19">head-to-head poll since February</a>. Trump's lead is one percentage point off of his high of a five-point lead in January in the head-to-head Morning Consult poll.
Voters were also asked who they would vote for in a hypothetical matchup of Vice President Kamala Harris against Trump.
Harris had 45% of the vote compared to 46% for Trump in the poll, ranking ahead of Biden. Here's how Harris fared in several key demographics in the head-to-head matchup.

<li>Black voters: 62% Harris, 27% Trump (62% Biden, 27% Trump)</li>

Harris fared better than Biden in the main categories based on her overall voter percentage and margin ahead of or behind Trump.
Along with trailing Trump by four points, the latest poll also shows plenty of concern for the president&#8217;s campaign.
After having a better net favorability rating for nine straight weeks, Biden now trails Trump for a second straight week. Biden&#8217;s recent streak was his longest, dating back to April 2023.
Biden also has a lower net buzz rating than Trump, which is ranked by the percent of voters who heard something positive about a candidate and the percent of voters who heard something negative about a candidate.
Biden has trailed Trump in the net buzz rankings for three straight weeks, which are the only weeks he has trailed Trump since tracking began.
In a trickle-down effect, the Morning Consult poll shows that Democratic members of Congress have a worse net buzz than Republican members of Congress.
The latest Morning Consult poll asked voters if they thought Biden should be replaced as the Democratic nominee. Forty-eight percent said yes, up one percentage point from June. A larger percentage of young 18-34 voters (65%), Black voters (55%) and Hispanic voters (64%) answered yes.
A separate Morning Consult <a href="https://pro.morningconsult.com/analyst-reports/state-of-the-parties-republican-2024-rnc-edition">survey </a>found the Democratic Party has less support on several key items than it did in the survey ahead of the 2020 election. Here is a look at the favored party in the category and the results of the 2020 survey in parentheses.

Can Tackle Big Issues: 40% Democratic Party (44%), 44% Republican Party (38%)

Trump Vs. Biden: Former President Posts Largest 2024 Election Lead Since February; Does Kamala Harris Poll Better?

Israeli forces intensified their operations in the Gaza Strip on Thursday, targeting historic refugee camps and Gaza City in the north, resulting in at least 21 deaths. 
Heavy Airstrikes in Gaza: A series of Israeli airstrikes targeted Zawayda town, Bureij and Nuseirat camps, and the crowded city of Deir-Al-Balah, which remains the last significant urban area in Gaza not yet invaded by Israeli forces, as Reuters reported Thursday. Local health officials confirmed these casualties, stressing the heavy toll on the civilian population.
The Israeli military announced that airstrikes in Gaza City had killed two senior Islamic Jihad commanders, including one involved in the October 7 attack in southern Israel that triggered the current conflict.
Netanyahu&#8217;s Military Visit: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a surprise visit to Israeli troops near Rafah, where he underscored the importance of military pressure combined with efforts to secure the release of 120 hostages held in Gaza. &#8220;Only the military pressure will help us advance the hostages deal,&#8221; Netanyahu said in an official statement. 
He emphasized that this dual approach is not delaying the deal but rather facilitating it. 
Netanyahu is scheduled to address the U.S. Congress next week to advocate for Israel&#8217;s actions and highlight its resilience. &#8220;I am going to present the justice of Israel&#8217;s cause, but I am also going to present the heroism of Israel,&#8221; he remarked.
Hezbollah Commander Killed in Lebanon: In southern Lebanon, an Israeli airstrike on Thursday killed Habib Maatouk, a commander in Hezbollah&#8217;s elite Radwan forces, along with at least four others. 
Maatouk had recently taken over from another commander killed earlier this year in an Israeli strike. The strikes on the border villages of Safad El Batikh and Jmaijmeh also left at least 12 people wounded, according to Reuters.
Israeli Parliament Rejects Palestinian Statehood: The Israeli Knesset decisively rejected the creation of a Palestinian state, with a vote of 68 to 9 on Wednesday. The declaration stated, &#8220;The Knesset of Israel firmly opposes the establishment of a Palestinian state west of the Jordan (river). 
The establishment of a Palestinian state in the heart of the Land of Israel would pose an existential danger to the State of Israel and its citizens, perpetuate the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and destabilize the region.&#8221; 
The Palestinian Authority condemned the vote, urging international action to support a two-state solution before it is too late.
U.S. Sanctions on Houthi Affiliates: The U.S. State Department announced sanctions on two individuals, five entities, and five vessels linked to Houthi attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea. 
&#8220;Today, the United States is sanctioning an additional two individuals and five entities, as well as identifying five vessels as blocked property for their association with the Houthis&#8217; attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea,&#8221; said State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller. 
These measures aim to disrupt the financial networks supporting Houthi activities, particularly those facilitated by U.S.-designated facilitator Sa&#8217;id al-Jamal.
Market Reactions: The iShares MSCI Israel ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EIS#NYSE">EIS</a>) closed down 0.92% Thursday, after falling as much as 2.1% Wednesday.

Israeli Forces Intensify Attacks In Gaza, Southern Lebanon Ahead Of Netanyahu's Visit To US Congress

Automobile manufacturers are pumping the brakes on investing in the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/07/39846836/california-ev-subsidies-made-tesla-what-it-is-but-elon-musk-is-ready-to-cut-them-off-remove-subsidie">future of electric vehicles</a> as car buyers think twice about buying them because of the high cost and need to keep charging them.
Ford Motor Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>) announced on Thursday it would refit a plant in Canada to make large gas-fired pickup trucks instead of electric sport-utility vehicles originally planned for that facility, the New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/18/business/ford-electric-vehicles-canada.html">reported</a>.
On Wednesday, General Motors Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>) said it planned to cut back this year&#8217;s production of EVs by 50,000 units to a range from 200,000 to 250,000 vehicles.

Even Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>), the leading producer of electric cars that created the EV market, is pulling back on investment in battery-powered vehicles. The company backed off on plans to build an electric car factory in Mexico and canceled a meeting in April between CEO Elon Musk and Narendra Modi, India&#8217;s prime minister, to discuss a new plant in that country.
General Motors and Ford expected to be able to manufacture more than 1 million EVs a year by the middle of the decade, but General Motors CEO Mary T. Barra said this week it will take longer to reach that capacity because EV sales have slowed.
Price Actions: At market close Thursday, Ford gained 0.48% to reach $14.55, while General Motors slipped 0.50% to $49.65 and Tesla went up 0.29% to $249.23.
Exchange-traded funds that hold shares of Tesla, which has a market capitalization of $781 billion, had gains and losses on Thursday.

Auto Industry Pulls Back On EVs As Consumers Hesitate Over High Price, Inconvenience

Bipartisan congressional lawmakers are striving to eliminate a contentious provision in a spending bill that would prevent the Justice Department from <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/cannabis-rescheduling">rescheduling marijuana. </a>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Mace And Tlaib Lead The Charge</h3>
<a href="https://www.marijuanamoment.net/bipartisan-lawmakers-seek-to-remove-marijuana-rescheduling-ban-from-key-spending-bill/">According</a> to Marijuana Moment, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) has introduced an amendment to strike the rescheduling restriction from the 2025 Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies (CJS) spending bill.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Senate And House Efforts</h3>
Republican senators attempted to block the administration from rescheduling cannabis through a standalone bill introduced last September, but it has not advanced. 
This activity aligns with the upcoming deadline for the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cannabis/24/05/38893172/attorney-general-merrick-garland-initiates-process-to-reschedule-cannabis-with-doj-legal-review-" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cannabis rescheduling process</a> on the DOJ&#8217;s proposal to reclassify marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA).
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Controversy Over Hemp Products</h3>
Rep. Morgan McGarvey (D-KY) has introduced amendments to the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies (Ag/FDA) spending bill to remove a provision that would ban most consumable hemp products. 
His proposal would also affirm states&#8217; rights to regulate hemp independently. The Ag/FDA bill report urges the FDA to intensify enforcement against unregulated cannabis products making unauthorized therapeutic claims.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">D.C. And Psilocybin Legislation</h3>
Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) has filed an amendment to the Financial Services and General Government (FSGG) spending bill to end the federal ban on Washington, D.C. using local tax dollars to implement adult-use marijuana sales. This restriction, sponsored by Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD), has been in place since 2014.
Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) has introduced amendments to various spending bills to prevent federal agencies from testing job applicants for marijuana and to protect state and local laws on medical psilocybin from Justice Department interference.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Veterans Affairs And Marijuana Recommendations</h3>
The House Rules Committee recently approved amendments to the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies (MilConVA) bill, allowing VA doctors to recommend medical marijuana to veterans and supporting psychedelics research. 
The full House has passed these proposals as part of the MilConVA appropriations. Similarly, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved a spending bill amendment permitting VA doctors to discuss and recommend medical marijuana to patients in states where it is legal.
