EXCLUSIVE: Would A Trump Victory Help Or Hurt Solar Stocks? Benzinga Poll Shows Investors Divided

Scientists at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences recently discovered that CBD can help protect skin from sun damage.  
"We have some great evidence that, when delivered in a meaningful way, cannabidiol can have an important impact on skin health," Dr. Adam Friedman, professor and chair of dermatology at GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences said.
A <a href="https://www.jaad.org/article/S0190-9622(24)02490-3/fulltext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a> published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology examined how cannabidiol (CBD) protects the skin from ultraviolet-A radiation (UVA). CBD is a non-psychoactive compound found in the cannabis plant. The study concluded CBD can help against mtDNA mutations associated with UVA-induced skin aging.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Study Highlights</h2>
The researchers focused on how CBD has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that could mitigate damage from UVA exposure. UVA radation contributes to photoaging by causing inflammation and oxidative damage, scientists wrote.
To test how effective CBD is in protecting skin from sun damage, researchers asked 19 participants to apply nano-CBD (nCBD) or vehicle (VC) cream to their buttocks twice a day for 14 days. Nano-CBD is CBD processed into very small nanoparticles, typically less than 100 nanometers in size and is used for better bioavailability and absorption.
The participants were then exposed to three times the amount of ultraviolet radiation that normally causes damage. After 24 hours, the volunteers&#8217; buttocks were biopsied for a thorough examination, including histology and immuno-histochemistry.
The analyses showed that 21% of participants had less observed erythema on CBD-treated skin than VC skin. Erythema is redness of the skin caused by increased blood flow in superficial capillaries It occurs with any skin injury, infection or inflammation.
More importantly, the study results also showed that 50% of the people treated with CBD had no DNA damage from the UV exposure, Friedman said, <a href="https://wtop.com/health-fitness/2024/07/gw-study-finds-cbd-may-help-prevent-skin-damage-from-the-sun/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">according to </a>Wtop News.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">More Research Needed</h2>
The small sample size was one of the limitations of the study. Friedman added that further research should be done to reveal how CBD can be used to protect against skin damage caused by the sun. Even though sunscreen is still the best way to protect the skin, Friedman pointed out that there are still areas of the skin that will be damaged. He said he hoped that CBD can help prevent this damage.
"I look at this nano-CBD as the cleanup. … It can help repair and protect our DNA from the harmful effects of UV radiation," he said.
"While this is the most involved study and the largest study of its kind, certainly more research is needed to really find out where CBD delivered in this unique way has a place in managing healthy skin and protecting against the harmful effects of the environment like the sun," Friedman concluded.
In addition to GW's School of Medicine, the study was conducted by the Center for Clinical and Cosmetic Research in Florida.

These UV rays can burn and damage skin without the feeling of getting warm.

The European Central Bank kept interest rates unchanged, as expected, keeping the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/07/39838605/european-central-bank-holds-interest-rates-unchanged-keeps-markets-guessing-on-se">door open for September.</a>
In commodities, growth-sensitive copper tumbled over 3%, hitting its lowest level since mid-April. Silver eased by 0.9% and gold remained flat. Oil prices slipped 0.3%, while natural gas surged over 4%, nearly recouping Wednesday&#8217;s sharp losses following a weaker-than-expected buildup in inventories last week.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) edged 0.4% lower, eyeing a second consecutive negative close.

On Wednesday, Pfizer Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PFE#NYSE">PFE</a>) and Valneva SE (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VALN#NASDAQ">VALN</a>) announced that the participants of the Phase 3 VALOR trial have completed the primary vaccination series (three doses) of Lyme disease <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/biotech/22/08/28408141/pfizer-and-valneva-commence-late-stage-lyme-disease-study" rel="noreferrer noopener">vaccine candidate VLA15</a>.
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that can be spread to humans by infected ticks.
Participants will be monitored for the occurrence of Lyme disease cases until the end of the Lyme disease season in 2025.
"VLA15, the Lyme disease vaccine candidate we are co-developing with Valneva, is the one which has advanced the furthest along the clinical development timeline, with two Phase 3 trials in progress," said Annaliesa Anderson, Ph.D., Senior Vice President and Head of Vaccine Research and Development, Pfizer.
The Pfizer-sponsored VALOR trial is <a target="_blank" href="https://valneva.com/press-release/phase-3-valor-lyme-disease-trial-valneva-and-pfizer-announce-primary-vaccination-series-completion/" rel="noreferrer noopener">conducted</a> at sites where Lyme disease is highly endemic across the U.S., Canada, and Europe.
The trial aims to evaluate the efficacy, safety, tolerability, immunogenicity, and lot consistency of VLA15, a 6-valent OspA-based Lyme <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/biotech/22/04/26814244/valneva-pfizer-post-encouraging-data-from-lyme-disease-vaccine-candidate" rel="noreferrer noopener">disease vaccine candidate</a>.
Trial participants aged five years and older were randomized 1:1 into two trial groups. They received four doses of either VLA15 or a saline placebo – one dose each at months 0, 2, 5-9 and a booster one year after the third dose, shortly before the peak of the next Lyme disease season.
Pfizer plans to submit marketing applications with the FDA and the European Medicines Agency in 2026.
VLA15 has shown a favorable safety profile in all clinical trials across all dose and age groups.
An independent Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) has observed no safety concerns in any treatment group to date.
A second Phase 3 trial (C4601012) is ongoing, aiming to provide further evidence on the safety profile of VLA15 in the pediatric population between 5 and 17 years of age. The trial completed enrollment in June 2023.
Pfizer and Valneva entered into a collaboration agreement in April 2020 to co-develop VLA15, with updates to the terms within this <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/biotech/23/09/34307656/pfizer-valnevas-tick-borne-infection-shot-companies-say-positive-result-for-lyme-disease-vaccine-" rel="noreferrer noopener">agreement made in June 2022</a>.
Price Action: At last check Thursday, VALN stock was down 0.46% at $7.70, and PFE stock was up 0.50% at $30.18.
