Infosys Reports Strong Q1 Earnings, Records Highest Free Cash Flow Ever

Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>) suffered under the wake of a broader technology sector rout, with presidential candidate Donald Trump suggesting that<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/07/39807774/trump-says-taiwan-should-pay-us-for-defense-ex-presidents-remark-triggers-fall-in-tsmc-shares"> Taiwan should compensate the U.S. for its defense</a>. As for the tech powerhouse, while Wall Street analysts are overwhelmingly bullish on META stock, concerns about forward viability have started to impact the current price action.
On the positive front, the social media giant – which owns Facebook along with other popular digital properties – recently<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/07/39803195/meta-platforms-stock-is-trading-lower-tuesday-whats-going-on"> received a major endorsement</a>. On Tuesday, Wolfe Research initiated coverage of META stock, pegging it with an<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings"> Outperform rating</a> along with a price target of $620. Against the close of the July 17 session, the forecast represents a return of 34.2%.
Wolfe's Shweta Khajuria stated in a research note to clients that Meta benefits from its massive scale, along with robust growth in its top line. In addition, the expert stated that META stock could enjoy a tailwind from the underlying company's investments in artificial intelligence.
Most importantly, Khajuria believes that Meta's advertising platform represents a must-have solution for digital-centric enterprises. However, it's the ad ecosystem itself that has also contributed to challenges for META stock.

Further, skeptics will note that in terms of<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/META/earnings"> earnings surprises</a> – or the magnitude by which bottom-line results beat analysts' targets – the trend has been decisively negative since the third quarter of 2023. In other words, there's plenty of fodder for both bulls and bears of META stock.
The ETFs: Given the rich backdrop of narratives, this framework provides ample relevance for META-specific exchange-traded funds. First, the Direxion Daily META Bull 2X Shares (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/METU#NASDAQ">METU</a>) provides 2X exposure to the tech juggernaut. Because of the compounding effect, METU is only appropriate for positions opened and closed within the same day. At the same time, speculators could see their returns accelerate considerably if they happen to call the market correctly.
On the other end of the scale, the Direxion Daily META Bear 1X Shares (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/METD#NASDAQ">METD</a>) provides a 1X inverse exposure to META stock; that is, as the target equity falls in value, this ETF rises. However, because of the similar compounding effect, investors should be in and out of their position within the same day.
The METU Chart: Since its introduction in early June to the first few days of July, METU witnessed a significant surge in value. However, as selling pressure impacted META stock, the leveraged fund witnessed a considerable erosion in sentiment.

<li>The July 17 session saw METU drop more than 11% as tech sector woes dragged down large-capitalization innovators.</li>
<li>In the technical charts, METU printed a red candlestick with no upper wick or shadow. This dynamic may indicate that sellers dominate the market.</li>

The METD Chart: As expected, the trend of the METD ETF represented the inverse of META stock, slipping during the period between early June and early July. However, in the past few sessions, the bear fund rocketed higher as top-tier tech names struggled under volatile pressure.

<li>On July 17, METD gained 5.87% of market value, which was almost the exact inverse performance of META stock, which dropped 5.68%.</li>
<li>METU charted a white candlestick with no lower wick or shadow. This suggests that from the opening bell, pessimists were bullish on the inverse fund (meaning bearish on the underlying asset), thus establishing control of the market.</li>

Uranium prices have more support now than they did when the nuclear fuel hit its all-time high in 2007, according to the chief executive <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/uranium">of uranium explorer</a> Madison Metals Inc. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MMTLF#OTC">MMTLF</a>).



Back then, when uranium reached a record high above $130 per pound, physical supply was tight because of flooding at two major mines, falling recoveries from old nuclear warheads, expectations of a nuclear renaissance and the launch of uranium futures in New York.



But the high price proved to be a bubble, quickly falling as end users stopped buying and financial services companies sold the metal. Later, in 2011, a disaster at a Japanese nuclear reactor sent the uranium market into a deep slump for years as nations shut down nuclear reactors.



The underlying fundamentals are "dramatically different" now, CEO Duane Parnham told Benzinga.

The tables have indeed turned. Around 60 reactors are under construction around the world, and an additional 110 are planned, according to the World Nuclear Association. That's in sharp contrast to the 65 reactors that, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency, were shut down or didn't have their life spans extended between 2011 and 2020.



The threat of climate change has helped temper opposition from environmentalists concerned about safety and waste. At the United Nations climate conference last year, 22 nations pledged to triple nuclear generation by 2050 from a 2020 baseline.



The energy transition away from fossil fuels toward net zero emissions though electrification means there will be a much greater need for carbon-free power generation, and wind and solar currently aren't able to meet base load power generation requirements.



"Nuclear really became the solution to that," Parnham said. "It's becoming more accepted."



According to a base case scenario from the World Nuclear Association, global demand from reactors could hit almost 130,000 metric tons by 2040, up substantially from the estimated demand of about 65,650 metric tons this year. But by 2040 supply from existing, prospective or planned mines or those now under development may total less than 80,000 metric tons, the group said.



"We've really got to start developing mines now," Parnham said.



Mine development and exploration has been underfunded because of the longtime slump in uranium prices, which dipped below $20 a pound in 2016.&nbsp;



Meanwhile, uranium purchases from investors and trading firms have become "significant," Parnham said.&nbsp;



On top of utilities buying uranium for reactors and governments making purchases for strategic stockpiles, demand from financial services companies "dries up what little supply is out there," he said.



One of the most prominent examples is the Sprott Physical Uranium Trust (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SRUUF#OTC">SRUUF</a>), which is an exchange traded fund that sells shares backed by physical uranium held in storage. Since its inception in 2021, the fund has amassed nearly 64 million pounds of uranium.



The buying from the financial market creates price volatility because the financial players will "flood the market" when prices start to come down, he said.&nbsp;



There may come a time when so much financial services money is entering the uranium market that governments will have to step in with regulation, but "we're a ways away from that," he said.



In the meantime, the higher uranium price is spurring merger and acquisition activity among uranium miners, as acquisitions offer the quickest way to grow, he said.&nbsp;



Indeed, recent merger and acquisition activity in the uranium space has included Premier American Uranium Inc.&nbsp;(OCT: PAUIF) and American Future Fuel Corp. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AFFCF#OTC">AFFCF</a>); Boss Energy Ltd. (BQSSF) and enCore Energy Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EU#NASDAQ">EU</a>); ATHA Energy Corp. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SASKF#OTC">SASKF</a>) and Latitude Uranium Inc. and 92 Energy; and IsoEnergy Ltd. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ISENF#OTC">ISENF</a>) and Consolidated Uranium Inc.

The uranium mining industry is experiencing a notable resurgence. Prices for nuclear fuel soar, prompting the revival of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/mining">once-forgotten mines</a>. 



As governments increasingly reconsider nuclear energy as a solution to growing climate change concerns, the prices have surged, creating opportunities for previously unprofitable mines to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/02/37341727/energy-fuels-ramps-up-colorado-and-wyoming-mines-to-skyrocket-uranium-production">fill a growing supply gap</a>.

Canada, for example, has attracted <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/01/36836481/surging-uranium-demand-supply-constraints-fuel-predictions-of-record-price-increases">increased exploration and mining activities</a>. Cameco (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CCJ#NYSE">CCJ</a>) is increasing production and extending the life of its Cigar Lake mine. It&#8217;s also exploring options to expand production capacity at its McArthur River/Key Lake mine. 



Furthermore, Denison Mines (AMEX:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DNN#AMEX">DNN</a>) has <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/01/36781665/uranium-revival-denison-mines-resumes-operations-at-mcclean-lake-as-prices-soar">restarted uranium mining</a> operations at its McClean Lake joint venture with Orano Canada Inc.



The Canadian market has also seen a heightened capex activity and a surge in mergers and acquisitions:



NexGen Energy (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NXE#NYSE">NXE</a>), which owns exploration properties in Saskatchewan, updated its expanded at-the-market equity offering to sell up to $368 million (CA$500 million) of common shares from treasury, reflecting its commitment to advancing the<a href="https://www.nexgenenergy.ca/rook-1-project/"> Rook I project</a>, the largest development-stage uranium project in Canada.

<li>92 Energy (OTCQX:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NTELF#OTCQX">NTELF</a>), an Australian developer of Canadian uranium properties, proposed <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/commodities/24/02/37126360/with-two-key-acquisitions-atha-energy-corp-emerges-as-a-premier-uranium-exploration-company">three-way merger acquisition</a> of ATHA Energy (OTCQB:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SASKF#OTCQB">SASKF</a>) and Latitude Uranium (OTCQB:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LURAF#OTCQB">LURAF</a>).</li>



<li>IsoEnergy (OTCQX:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ISENF#OTCQX">ISENF</a>) <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/23/11/g35722648/leading-proxy-advisory-firm-iss-recommends-consolidated-uranium-shareholders-vote-for-the-arrangem">merged</a> with Consolidated Uranium (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CURUF#OTC">CURUF</a>), enhancing its portfolio and expanding its exploration activities in the Athabasca Basin in Saskatchewan and Quebec properties.</li>



<li>IsoEnergy also completed a $23 million private placement deal in February. It intends to utilize the proceeds to explore its Athabasca Basin Portfolio and Quebec properties.</li>



<li>Fission Uranium Corporation (OTCQX:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FCUUF#OTCQX">FCUUF</a>) announced a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/02/36968704/fission-uranium-announces-funding-for-uranium-project-in-saskatchewan">$75 million offering</a>, earmarking the proceeds for the exploration and development of its PLS uranium project in the Athabasca Basin in Saskatchewan.</li>
</ul>



Meanwhile, at least five U.S. producers are restarting operations in states such as Wyoming, Texas, Arizona, and Utah. Production had previously thrived until the aftermath of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan.



The U.S. resurgence is also politically motivated, as heightened geopolitical uncertainty creates issues securing uranium shipments from Kazakhstan. This former Soviet state is the largest global uranium producer, and it typically exports commodities through Russian ports.



If the U.S. continues on the planned uranium consumption trajectory, the Uranium Producers of America <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-03-03/uranium-firms-revive-forgotten-mines-as-price-of-nuclear-fuel-soars">forecasts</a> a need for eight to 10 new mines. 



American uranium production bottomed in 2019 at an all-time low of 174,000 pounds. That&#8217;s in stark contrast from the peak of 44 million pounds in 1980.



Retail investors in Uranium will keep Sprott Physical Uranium Trust (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SRUUF#OTC">SRUUF</a>) on their watchlist as this Toronto-based holding company invests nearly all of its assets in uranium.
