For Skoll, a Canadian billionaire and former ice hockey youth player, trading sports (he headed eBay from 1996 to 1998) for business proved to be a proactive move. However, his love of the game never left and he purchased a stake in the Capitals two years ago.&nbsp;
"I decided it would be great to have a home in the area so I could be there more often," Skoll, 59, told the Wall Street Journal.
A guesthouse For $6.5 Million
Skoll's purchase in the coveted D.C. suburb was not isolated. It includes multiple parcels amounting to nine acres and features a $10.5 million spec mansion – an 11,600-square-foot house sheathed in blue stone with wood siding and a metal roof – built by Artisan Builders on roughly an acre of land in McLean's West Langley area. Renderings of the mansion went on the market in August.
Rather than live close to the construction, as billionaires do, Skoll purchased another home, Elmwood, for $6.5 million. This adjacent 8-acre estate was owned by the family of late TV newscaster Roger Mudd, who passed away in 2021. Skoll may use Elmwood as a guesthouse when his new property is completed.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A History Of High-End Homes</h2>
The Virginia property will not be Skoll's primary residence despite the cash outlay. That honor goes to a Manalapan, Fla., estate he purchased for under $90 million in 2021.
Skoll is not known for dealing in low-key real estate. In 2016, he sold his $20 million Los Altos, CA, home in the heart of Silicon Valley. The custom estate, built in 1990, included eight bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, an eight-car garage, seven fireplaces and over 100 mature trees on three-plus acres.
Skoll also owned two homes in<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/real-estate/24/09/40957620/celebrity-property-portfolios-soar-with-bezos-and-oprah-tied-for-the-top-spot"> Beverly Hills</a>, which he purchased in 2014 and sold in 2022 for a combined price of $33 million. According to The Real Deal, Palo Alto firm Capricorn Investment Group, which manages Skoll's investment portfolio, sold a 7,500-square-foot mansion at 1118 Calle Vista Drive and a smaller Tudor-style home at 1116 Calle Vista Drive.

Skoll made the bulk of his fortune working alongside founder and friend Pierre Omidyar, firstly out of Omidyar's basement and later Skoll's living room. "We were on a rocket ride from 1996 when we teamed up until 1998 when we were getting ready to go public," he told the Wall Street Journal.
He stayed at eBay until the early 2000s when he<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/money/what-does-ipo-mean"> took the company public</a>. He has also scored recent successes through Participant Media, a film and TV production company that aims to tell impactful stories. A Kansas safe and firearms accessories company is reportedly stepping up its all-American focus with the marketing and commercialization of a new line of gun safes manufactured entirely in the United States.

American Rebel Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AREB#NASDAQ">AREB</a>) doesn&rsquo;t make guns, but it manufactures accessories designed to safely store weapons, including safes. Now, it is building a new product line called Freedom Safes that will be manufactured at the company&rsquo;s Kansas plant.

The new line of safes, currently undergoing Underwriters Laboratories (UL) testing, is another step on American Rebel&rsquo;s journey to position itself as America&rsquo;s Patriotic Brand for U.S. firearm enthusiasts.

By focusing on its Kansas manufacturing plant, for example, the company says it is moving away from its reliance on making its products in Mexico. American Rebel is working on a licensing deal where it can use the National Rifle Association&nbsp; (NRA) logo on its existing line of gun safes. The company will market that product line at the NRA&rsquo;s annual convention in Houston over Memorial Day weekend.

<h2>Safes Made In The U.S.</h2>

Several other U.S. gun safe manufacturers pride themselves on making great products at home.

Utah-based Liberty Safe and Security Products Inc. is one of the larger gun safe companies based in the U.S. with over 2 million customers. Liberty Safe, owned by private equity group Monomoy Capital Partners, who recently purchased Liberty from Compass Diversified Holdings (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CODI#NYSE">CODI</a>) for <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/compass-diversified-completes-sale-liberty-201500865.html">$127 million</a>, makes a portion of their safes in the US and imports the balance from overseas.

It&rsquo;s a competitive market, and American Rebel is trusting its focus on being all American all the time might give it an edge &mdash; especially as the company moves manufacturing to its Kansas plant.

American Rebel also produces other products such as concealed-carry backpacks, vault doors and safes for use by the cannabis industry. The company has a line of apparel designed to support the American Rebel brand and boost sales of its main products.

Gun sales from names like SIG Sauer manufactured by SIG Combibloc Group AG (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SCBGF#OTC">SCBGF</a>) and Smith &amp; Wesson Brands Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SWBI#NASDAQ">SWBI</a>) have reached record levels in recent years, in turn boosting gun safe and other firearm accessory sales. The highest year ever for recorded gun sales in the U.S. was 2020.

The company&rsquo;s main product line is safes specifically designed to hold firearms. The company will soon launch a Made-in-the-USA model built in Topeka, Kansas.&nbsp;

American Rebel also makes safes for other uses, including styles that can be transported through airports and those needed by retailers such as cannabis dispensaries operated by companies like Cresco Labs Inc. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CRLBF#OTC">CRLBF</a>) to protect products overnight. American Rebel makes backpacks designed for concealed-carry needs as well as a wide range of apparel and accessories.

<h2>Raising Some Greenbacks</h2>

The company announced in early February it had raised $10.5 million in a public offering.&nbsp;

It plans to use the net proceeds to repay outstanding indebtedness and for general corporate purposes, including working capital, increased research and development expenditures, and funding American Rebel&rsquo;s growth strategies.

&ldquo;Since it is impossible to predict with certainty the timing and amount of funds required to establish profitability, we anticipate that we will need to raise additional funds through equity or debt offerings or otherwise in order to meet our expected future liquidity requirements,&rdquo; the company said.

Other players in the gun safe sector include Utah-based Liberty Safe and Security Products Inc., owned by private equity group Monomoy Capital Partners, who recently purchased Liberty from Compass Diversified Holdings (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CODI#NYSE">CODI</a>) for <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/compass-diversified-completes-sale-liberty-201500865.html">$127 million</a>, and Idaho-based Rhino Metals Inc. Meanwhile, popular gun brands in the U.S. include SIG Sauer manufactured by SIG Combibloc Group AG (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SCBGF#OTC">SCBGF</a>) and Smith &amp; Wesson Brands Inc.
