Short interest in Tesla currently stands at $21.11 billion with 100.30 million shares shorted, according to data from S3 Partners shared with Benzinga.
Tesla ranks as the fourth most shorted stock in the U.S. markets behind NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>), Apple Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>) according to <a href="https://www.s3partners.com/">S3 Partners.</a>
"There has been increased short selling in TSLA since the beginning of June," S3 Partners Managing Director of Predictive Analytics <a href="https://x.com/ihors3">Ihor Dusaniwsky</a> told Benzinga.
Dusaniwsky said there has been 13.94 million shares worth $2.92 billion of Tesla sold short in 2024.
"Over the last thirty days, we've seen short selling with 722k shares, worth $152 million, sold short."
Benzinga asked if there had been a significant change in shorting Tesla shares since <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/06/39323339/tesla-shareholders-approve-elon-musk-56b-pay-package-other-company-proposals">the pay package </a>for Tesla CEO <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/06/39323339/tesla-shareholders-approve-elon-musk-56b-pay-package-other-company-proposals">Elon Musk </a>was approved on June 13.
"Since June 13th, we've seen 1.56 million shares of short covering, worth $327 million, a -1.5% decline in total shares shorted as its stock price rallied +18%."
Tuesday's gains represented $1.65 billion in mark-to-market losses, according to Dusaniwsky.
Short sellers are up "only" $1.37 billion in mark-to-market profits, or +7.6%, year-to-date, Dusaniwsky said.
"Shorting TSLA has been a profitable trade in 2024 until lately."
In June, shorts have given back earlier profits and are down $1.95 billion in month-to-date mark-to-market losses, which represents a 10.7% decline.

The tweet was in reference to one of the most famous Tesla short sellers ever, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates.
Musk referenced <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/education/23/07/33119214/if-you-invested-1-000-in-tesla-stock-when-bill-gates-shorted-heres-how-much-youd-have-now">Gates' short position </a>in Tesla stock during an appearance on the "Joe Rogan Experience" podcast.
&nbsp;"I also heard that at one point he had a large short position. I don't know if that's true or not, but it seems weird. <h3>Escape Velocity For Tesla?&nbsp;</h3>
In a prescient post last week (<a href="https://www.zerohedge.com/the-market-ear/could-tesla-be-bottoming-out">Could Tesla Be Bottoming?</a>), The Market Ear noted things could get exciting for&nbsp;Tesla, Inc.&nbsp;(NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tsla#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) shares in the short term if the stock broke through resistance:&nbsp;

The short term chart is showing some sort of inverse head and shoulder formation having formed over the past few months. $190/195 is resistance area. The Market Ear did note that the long term trend for Tesla remained negative, with the stock needing to break through $220 to invalidate that, but given how strongly Tesla broke though the $190-$195 resistance level, it seemed on Monday that Tesla shares&nbsp;could break through $220 soon too. Intraday Monday, Tesla shares broke above $213, before closing at $209.86. They broke through $230 intraday Tuesday.&nbsp;
<h3>A (False) Rumor Of Record Sales In China</h3>
We wondered to what extent Monday&#39;s move in Tesla shares was due to posts like this one saying that Tesla sales in China hit a record in June.&nbsp;

Apparently, the &quot;new high&quot; claim was originally included in a previous version of&nbsp;<a href="https://weibo.com/3615027564/OluSUjP9e">this Weibo post</a>&nbsp;by Tesla China, but subsequently removed.&nbsp;

If true, this would have been especially impressive, given the current EV competition in China, including a new entrant,&nbsp;Xiaomi&nbsp;(OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/xiacy#OTC">XIACY</a>), which is sort of like China&#39;s version of Apple.&nbsp;

As it turned out though, Tesla sales were actually down 24.2% year-over-year in China in June. But deliveries overall&nbsp;<a href="https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/tsla-shares-soar-after-better-expected-q2-deliveries">were better than expected</a>.
<h3>Our Tesla Trade&nbsp;</h3>

Since the maximum gain on this trade occurs when the stock is over $205, this trade is on track for its maximum gain.
<h3>Another Trade On Track For A ~200% Gain&nbsp;</h3>
In a post last week (<a href="https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2024-06-28/another-trade-track-200-gain">Another Trade On Track For A ~200% Gain</a>), we mentioned that our&nbsp;Carvana, Co.&nbsp;(NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/cvna#NYSE">CVNA</a>) and&nbsp;SalesForce, Inc.&nbsp;(NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/crm#NYSE">CRM</a>) trades were on track for 200% gains.&nbsp;

Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XOM#NYSE">XOM</a>) is renewing a 33-year-old lease on its expansive offices in Lagos&#8217;s upscale Lekki district.



The lease was set to expire on Friday.



The move comes after it plans to scale down operations in Nigeria, reported Reuters.



Exxon is relocating staff from its 12-floor Mobil House, reportedly leased at $10 million annually, to a six-floor office building 22 kilometers away in the Ikoyi area.



The new office is said to accommodate half the personnel working at the former offices.



Earlier this month, Exxon said an asset sale to Seplat Energy (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SEPLF#OTC">SEPLF</a>) could be approved in less than <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/05/38612283/seplats-1-28b-asset-deal-with-exxon-gets-regulatory-boost-report" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">two weeks and currently nearing closure</a>.



Shell plc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SHEL#NYSE">SHEL</a>), TotalEnergies SE (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TTE#NYSE">TTE</a>), and Eni S.p.A. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/E#NYSE">E</a>) have also planned to leave Nigeria&#8217;s oil-rich Niger delta, citing security concerns. Such moves have been stalled by regulatory hurdles.

Exxon Mobil Corporation&#8216;s&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XOM#NYSE">XOM</a>) asset sale to&nbsp;Seplat Energy&nbsp;(OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SEPLF#OTC">SEPLF</a>) could reportedly&nbsp;be approved&nbsp;in less than two weeks.



Nigeria&#8217;s oil regulator said&nbsp;that&nbsp;this would end a two-year delay since the deal was signed, reported Reuters.



In 2022, Seplat Energy&nbsp;inked the $1.28 billion deal with Exxon and has been&nbsp;waiting&nbsp;regulatory approval&nbsp;since then.



As per the report, Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) chief Gbenga Komolafe stated, &#8220;Subject to the outcome of the meeting, consent&#8230; could be given in less than two weeks from the date of the meeting.&#8221;



Komolafe added that &#8220;NUPRC would give the companies two mutually exclusive options that, if accepted, would permit approval of the deal.&#8221;



&#8220;As a commission, we don&#8217;t want our nation to carry unwarranted financial burdens arising from the operations of the assets over time by the divesting entities.&#8221;



As per the report, analysts said that approving the Exxon-Seplat deal would inject much-needed capital into Nigeria&#8217;s oil industry, thereby leading to improved oil output.



Apart from this, Exxon Mobil Corporation is preparing to close its $60 billion deal for&nbsp;Pioneer Natural Resources Co&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PXD#NYSE">PXD</a>)&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/24/05/38569055/exxon-mobil-set-to-close-60b-deal-for-pioneer-natural-resources-after-agreement-with-ftc" rel="noreferrer noopener">in the coming days</a>.
