Despite the recent tech-led sell-off, a strategist is optimistic about the way forward for the market. &#8220;The summer rally that we've got in 2024 has gotten healthier. We like the participation at the index level, also at the stock level,&#8221; BofA Technical Strategist Stephen Suttmeier <a href="https://x.com/SquawkCNBC/status/1813919347565621722">said </a>in a CNBC interview.
After the Nasdaq 100, the S&amp;P 500 rose to a new high, and earlier this week the S&amp;P Equal-Weighted Index and the Dow Industrials followed them to new peaks, he said. The Russell 2,000 Index also broke out from a two to three-year base, he added.
&#8220;So a lot of improvement, more participation tends to be healthier for the market,&#8221; the strategist said.
Suttmeier said the S&amp;P 500 hit the 5,600 target BofA&#8217;s had for the summer rally and he sees the scope for the index climbing further to 6,150, probably within the next you know 12 months or so.
Ryan Detrick of Carson Group highlighted one positive among the recent downtrend. The S&amp;P 500 is on the longest streak since the Great Financial Crisis without a 2% drop. &#8220;Past few days have definitely added some more volatility but not long enough to end this streak just yet,&#8221; he said.

Permits for airport access are granted at SFO&#8217;s discretion. According to SFO spokesperson Doug Yakel, the process for Waymo may be as complex as it was for Uber Technologies Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UBER#NYSE">UBER</a>) and Lyft Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LYFT#NASDAQ">LYFT</a>) over a decade ago, the report mentioned.

The report further noted a Waymo spokesperson who confirmed preliminary talks with SFO to start noncommercial mapping with a human driver at the airport. The company plans to follow a phased approach similar to its partnership with Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport.
The first procedural step involves digital mapping of SFO&#8217;s roadways, a permit for which was postponed in 2023 by Abubakar Azam, SFO&#8217;s director of landside operations.

Why It Matters: GM&#8217;s autonomous driving unit&nbsp;Cruise&nbsp;suspended operations in the U.S. late last year following the involvement of one of its robotaxis in an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/23/10/35052444/self-driving-cruise-car-accident-leaves-pedestrian-trapped-and-injured-in-san-francisco" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">accident in San Francisco</a>. The company&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/04/38155753/cruise-back-on-phoenix-roads-soon-gms-self-driving-unit-reportedly-gears-up-to-resume-robotaxi-testi" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">resumed manual driving in the city of Phoenix</a>&nbsp;to gather road information in April and in Houston and Dallas, Texas in June. 
Cruise accrued expenses of $400 million in the first quarter as compared to the $800 million in the quarter before. The company said in April that it expects the unit&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/01/36862459/told-them-so-elon-musk-mocks-big-ticket-investor-who-chose-cruise-over-tesla-after-gms-self-driving" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">full-year expenses&nbsp;</a>to be around $1.7 billion.
In June, GM&#8217;s CFO&nbsp;Paul Jacobson&nbsp;said at Deutsche Bank&#8217;s Global Auto Industry Conference in New York City that the company is investing&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/06/39286236/robotaxi-focused-elon-musk-says-gm-not-making-the-right-moves-with-850m-investment-in-self-drivi" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">$850 million to cover</a>&nbsp;operating costs at Cruise. The company is also reportedly scouting for external financing from investors to beef up the unit&#8217;s financial position.
The company also <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/06/39500635/gm-appoints-marc-whitten-as-new-cruise-ceo-gears-up-for-robotaxi-resumption-amid-tesla-challenge">appointed</a> Marc Whitten&nbsp;as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) late last month, replacing Cruise co-founder&nbsp;Kyle Vogt who&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/23/11/35866639/cruise-ceo-kyle-vogt-resigns-amid-safety-concerns-and-suspension-of-operations-at-gm-self-driving-ar" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">left his CEO position last year</a> following the safety incident.

On Thursday, July 18, U.S. stock markets closed lower, reversing early gains as investors moved away from high-priced megacap growth stocks amid second-quarter earnings season. All major indexes dropped, with the Dow breaking its streak of record highs.
S&amp;P 500 sectors closed mostly negative, with healthcare, consumer discretionary, and financials suffering the largest losses. Energy stocks, however, closed higher.
According to economic data, U.S. initial jobless claims rose by 10,000 to 243,000 for the week ending July 13, exceeding estimates of 230,000. The Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index increased to 13.9 in July, up from 1.3 in June, marking a three-month high.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 1.29% and closed at 40,665.02. The S&amp;P 500 declined 0.78%, ending the day at 5,544.59, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.70%, finishing the session at 17,871.22.
Pre-market Friday, CrowdStrike (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CRWD#NASDAQ">CRWD</a>) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>) <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/07/39855166/crowdstrike-shares-drop-13-microsoft-takes-a-hit-during-pre-market-after-major-outage-causes-glo" rel="noreferrer noopener">saw significant pre-market drops on Friday after a CrowdStrike update caused global Windows crashes</a>. Europe&#8217;s biggest car rental company Sixt SE, is reportedly phasing out Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) EVs from its fleet for the same reasons as American car rental company Hertz Global Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HTZ#NASDAQ">HTZ</a>). 



What Happened: Sixt is looking to reduce the Tesla vehicles in its fleet owing to the higher repair costs of electric cars as compared to combustion engine vehicles coupled with lower resale values, Bloomberg News<a href="https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/sixt-to-phase-out-teslas-from-rental-car-fleet-on-poor-resale-value-1.2006066#:~:text=Sixt%20to%20Phase%20Out%20Teslas%20From%20Rental%20Car%20Fleet%20on%20Poor%20Resale%20Value,-Wilfried%20Eckl%2DDorna&amp;text=(Bloomberg)%20%2D%2D%20Sixt%20SE%20is,Europe's%20biggest%20car%2Drental%20company"> reported</a>, citing an email sent to customers. 



Despite backtracking on the U.S. EV giant, the company still intends to electrify as much as 90% of its European fleet by the decade&#8217;s end.



Why It Matters: American car rental Hertz flagged <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/23/10/35477812/hertz-ceo-says-tesla-evs-cost-the-company-heavily-owing-to-price-cuts-higher-costs-of-repair">similar concerns in October</a>. Hertz announced its intention to scale back its EV fleet, especially Tesla vehicles, during its third-quarter earnings call. The company cited higher collision and damage repair costs for EVs compared to traditional vehicles, impacting results in the last quarter and negatively affecting EBITDA.



Hertz CEO Stephen Scherr explained that the decline in the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of EVs, particularly Tesla, throughout 2023 led to a lower fair market value for Hertz's EVs compared to the previous year. This decrease resulted in larger losses and higher burdens in the event of salvage, negatively affecting EBITDA. Scherr emphasized that the third-quarter EBITDA margin would have been significantly higher if the entire fleet were traditional combustion engine vehicles.



Hertz expressed its plans to purchase EVs from other manufacturers with established part supply networks at lower price points. Although the company initially aimed for&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/23/10/35458813/tesla-maintains-strong-lead-as-preferred-ev-brand-for-us-fleet-businesses-report" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">25% of its fleet</a>&nbsp;to be electric by the end of 2024, Scherr clarified that it's not a rigid timeline.
