Southern, Singularity Partner for Energy Transparency

Concerns for the box office in 2024 may have been overly exaggerated or first half heavy, as "Despicable Me 4" continued the recent success of animated films <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/07/39601522/disney-bringing-back-box-office-magic-analyst-praises-inside-out-2-performance-look">in movie theaters.</a>
What Happened: Opening over the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/july-fourth">Fourth of July holiday,</a> "Despicable Me 4" grossed $122.6 million at the domestic box office in its first five days in theaters.
The film earned $75 million during the three-day weekend after its early Wednesday holiday week opening, as reported by <a href="https://variety.com/2024/film/news/despicable-me-4-july-4-holiday-box-office-maxxxine-a24-debut-results-1236061893/">Variety</a>.
In international markets, the movie added another $106.9 million in theaters, for a worldwide opening total of $229.5 million.
The film comes from Universal Studios, a unit of Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CMCSA#NASDAQ">CMCSA</a>) and continues the storyline of Gru and the Minions, which started with the first Despicable Me film in 2010.
"Minions: The Rise of Gru" leads the franchise with $370.3 million in domestic box office. "Minions" leads the franchise with $1.16 billion in worldwide box office. Each of the last four films in the franchise have grossed at least $900 million worldwide.
The fourth Despicable Me movie is the sixth in the franchise when counting the Minions standalone movies. The franchise will have at least two more films, with a third Minions movie reportedly planned for 2026 and a fifth Despicable Me movie reportedly planned for 2028.
"It's a tremendous debut for a franchise that is now many installments in," Universal's Head of Distribution Jim Orr said. "People around the world love Gru and the Minions and find them to be clever and adorable and hysterically funny."
Outside of "Despicable Me 4," another 2024 animated film continued to score big at the box office. The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIS#NYSE">DIS</a>) hit "Inside Out 2" finished in second place with $30 million to take its domestic box office total to $533.8 million. The film has now grossed $1.2 billion globally and is the fifth-biggest animated film worldwide of all time.

Why It's Important: The latest film came with a production cost of $100 million according to Variety, which could lead to big profits for Comcast. For comparison, Variety said Pixar and Disney animated films often come with $200 million production budgets.
Universal <a href="https://variety.com/2024/film/box-office/universal-overtakes-disney-highest-grossing-studio-box-office-1235859823/">dominated </a>the box office in 2023 and had the second-biggest film with the animated hit "The Super Mario Bros.," which grossed $574.9 million domestically and $1.36 billion worldwide.
The Comcast unit ranked as the top grossing studio in 2023 with $4.91 billion from 24 films, beating Disney ($4.83 billion, 17 films). This marked the first time Disney didn't finish in first place for worldwide box office by studio since 2015.
In 2024, Universal has four top-15 movies domestically, with "Kung Fu Panda 4" ranking fourth ($193.6 million) and "Despicable Me 4" already ranking seventh. "Fall Guy" and "Migration" rank 12th and 15th respectively.
Upcoming Universal releases in 2024 include "Twisters," "Speak No Evil," "The Wild Robot" and "Wicked."

Ticket sales are now down 17% year-over-year, compared to being down 28% heading into the summer season.
AMC Entertainment Holdings (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMC#NYSE">AMC</a>) <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/07/39668615/whats-going-on-with-amc-entertainment-stock-monday">reported a strong</a> Fourth of July week and weekend, led by "Despicable Me 4." The movie theater leader said it has over four million moviegoers over the extended holiday weekend. This broke a company record for domestic attendance in 2024 for a Wednesday through Sunday period.
The company stated that its "Despicable Me 4" collectible popcorn bucket and other merchandise generated the highest revenue for 2024 and the second highest in the company&#8217;s history.
In addition to strong ticket sales and merchandise, AMC reported that its food and beverage revenue on July 3 reached the highest level for a Wednesday since 2020 and the third-highest Wednesday food and beverage revenue in the company&#8217;s history.
"We're also pleased to see that AMC's merchandise strategy continues to reap benefits, both in the offerings for our guests, and in terms of revenue for the Company," AMC CEO Adam Aron said.
CMCSA Price Action: Comcast shares are down 1% to $37.45 on Monday, versus a 52-week trading range of $36.43 to $47.46. Comcast stock is down 15% year-to-date in 2024 and down 10% over the last year.

EBITDA came in at $104 million vs $95 million a year ago, with a margin of 13%. EPS of $1.06&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">missed the consensus of $1.15</a>.
As of May 31, cash and equivalents stood at $291.8 million. The company&#8217;s quarterly dividend per share of $0.30 is payable on August 13 to shareholders of record as of July 23.

<h3>EIA Reports a Build Slightly Larger Than Market Expectations</h3>
Stockpiles held in underground storage in the lower 48 states rose 32 billion cubic feet (Bcf) for the week ended Jun 28, above the analyst guidance of a 30 Bcf addition. The latest increase puts total natural gas stocks at 3,134 Bcf, 275 Bcf (9.6%) above the 2023 level and 496 Bcf (18.8%) higher than the five-year average.
<h3>Natural Gas Prices Finish Significantly Lower</h3>
Natural gas prices trended southward last week, following the higher-than-expected inventory build. Futures for August delivery ended Friday at $2.32 on the New York Mercantile Exchange, plunging some 10.8% from the previous week&#39;s closing. Despite this dip, the commodity has been resurgent over the past few months &mdash; gaining 47.5% in the second quarter &mdash; and wiped out almost all its deficit since the start of this year.
Investors should know that natural gas realization has been under pressure from strong production, elevated stockpiles, and tepid weather-related demand. It&#39;s worth mentioning that the current inventory levels are well above the year-ago figure and the five-year average. The bearish sentiment surrounding the commodity even prompted shale producers Chesapeake Energy (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/chk#NASDAQ">CHK</a>) and EQT Corporation (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/eqt#NYSE">EQT</a>) to hit the brakes on new drilling. Chesapeake announced a reduction in its drilling rigs to lower volume, with the Appalachian Basin-focused EQT following on.
However, both these companies have recently started bringing earlier-deferred production back online following the recovery in prices. It appears that the increased output has put renewed pressure on natural gas prices. This is despite the predictions of hotter-than-normal weather over the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, a stable demand catalyst in the form of continued strong LNG feed gas deliveries is supporting natural gas. LNG shipments for export from the United States have been elevated of late due to environmental reasons and Europe&#39;s endeavor to move away from its dependence on Russian natural gas supplies due to the war in Ukraine.
At the same time, the increase in gas flows due to the full restart of the Freeport LNG export plant in Texas has translated into more of the commodity being loaded onto ships. A heatwave blanketing Southeast Asia has also led to a jump in power demand for air conditioning, increasing exports of the super-chilled fuel.
<h3>Final Thoughts</h3>
The upshot of all these factors &mdash; the natural gas market &mdash; despite improving, remains an oversupplied one. It endured a torrid 2023, briefly breaking below the $2 threshold for the first time since 2020. The situation was not much different in early 2024, with the fuel reaching a multi-year low near $1.48 in late March and struggling to sustain a rally over the psychological mark of $2.
While natural gas staged quite the turnaround in a matter of weeks, given the favorable temperature and lower production outlook, it has dropped again as producers plan to bring back those volumes.
Based on these factors, the space is currently quite unpredictable and spooked by sudden changes in weather and production patterns. As such, investors are advised to continue exercising caution, and preferably buy/hold on to fundamentally strong stocks like Coterra Energy and Cheniere Energy.
Coterra Energy: It is an independent upstream operator primarily engaged in the exploration, development and production of natural gas. Headquartered in Houston, TX, the firm owns some 183,000 net acres in the gas-producing Marcellus Shale of the Appalachian Basin. This Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) company churned out an average of 2,262.7 million cubic feet daily from these assets in 2023.
Coterra beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate for earnings in three of the trailing four quarters and missed in the other, the average being 9.8%. Valued at around $19.5 billion, CTRA has risen 5.9% in a year.
Cheniere Energy: Being the first company to receive regulatory approval to export LNG from its 2.6 billion cubic feet per day Sabine Pass terminal, Cheniere Energy enjoys a distinct competitive advantage.
Cheniere Energy beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate for earnings in two of the last four quarters and missed in the other two. This Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) natural gas exporter has a trailing four-quarter earnings surprise of roughly 58.9%, on average. LNG shares have moved up 15.2% in a year.
