Way back in December of 2017 Delfin Midstream made an acquisition of over 70% $TGLO&nbsp;(OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TGLO#OTC">TGLO</a>) and as you can see <a href="https://delfinmidstream.com/media/#NewsId1">here</a>. It looks like they have plans to expand.&nbsp;

If you believe that there may be a natural gas comeback like I do, this certainly deserves to stay on watch. They are currently trading OTC, but catch this. In over 5 years of owning just over 70% of $TGLO Delfin has not diluted or followed the trend of getting involved in toxic financing that is stressing our markets today. Why am I bringing this up now? They still have not&nbsp;completed the long awaited reverse merger that can really cause an impact.&nbsp;

As you can see by the link attached earlier&nbsp;in the article, they have agreements that show their desire to grow at a fast rate, I won&#39;t bore you with the details because you&#39;re going to want to double check on their official page anyway, because who am I? You&#39;re going to want to take a second look to confirm research as always&nbsp;this is just something that caught my eye.&nbsp;More people should be paying attention to this&nbsp;as time goes by and&nbsp;the LNG field hopefully has a promising recovery going into the winter months. Below I&#39;m going to list off a few reasons why I believe there is so much promise floating in Delfin.

- Why hold 70%&nbsp;of a shell company for over 5 years if you&#39;re not going to do anything with it?

- They are accelerating the development of FLNG vessels as stated publicly, why would Delfin do that if they weren&#39;t forecasting accelerating growth as well?&nbsp;

- TImiing is everything, they may be waiting for the right time. Like potentially when nat gas is trading near the lows that it has been.&nbsp;

Crypto is obviously in a bubble now, as exemplified by the spike in the meme currency Dogecoin this year, apparently fueled by nothing more than joking Elon Musk tweets.

Bitcoin To $100k?&nbsp;

In that post, we included our friend Anatoly Karlin&#39;s prediction of Bitcoin peaking at $100k before crashing like Amazon didafter the dot-com bubble popped.&nbsp;

At the time, we gave two reasons why we felt Karlin was worth paying attention to: first, he was a long term Bitcoin bull, and second, his predictions about COVID-19 in early 2020 had proved accurate.

Bitcoin To $80k?

Last month, Karlin updated his Bitcoin peak prediction. He said he saw it peaking at around $80k in December, followed by a crash in February.

Investing From The Viewpoint Of Calamity

We tend to think of investing &quot;from the viewpoint of calamity,&quot; to re-borrow the expression Benjamin Graham borrowed from the philosopher Baruch Spinoza. Hence our focus on hedging. Here&#39;s what that looks like in practical terms.

Let&#39;s say you have $50,000 in cash you want to invest, but you aren&#39;t willing to risk a drawdown of more than 20% over the next six months. You figure that if crypto crashes over the next few months, your stocks might drop a lot more than that. In that case, you could enter your risk tolerance and the dollar amount you were looking to invest in the tool pictured below.&nbsp;

With that portfolio, your maximum drawdown over the next six months--that is, if every underlying security went to zero--would be a decline of 19% (the Max Drawdown). Your best case scenario would be a gain of about 30% (the Net Potential Return), and a more likely scenario (the Expected Return) would be about 12% over the next six months.

Why Those Names?

Alpha &amp; Omega Semiconductor, Ltd. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AOSL#NASDAQ">AOSL</a>), Lending Club Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LC#NYSE">LC</a>), and the Bitcoin miner Marathon Digital Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MARA#NASDAQ">MARA</a>) were the ones that had the highest potential returns, net of hedging costs, when hedging against a &gt;20% decline, and had share prices low enough that they could fit in a $50,000 portfolio. Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>), for example was a top name of ours on Thursday but with a share price over $1,000, you couldn&#39;t fit a round lot of it in a $50k portfolio. Our system started with roughly equal dollar amounts of each, and then rounded them down to round lots, to reduce hedging costs. It swept up most of the leftover cash from the rounding-down process into a tightly collared position in Everspin Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MRAM#NASDAQ">MRAM</a>) to further reduce hedging cost.

Why Those Hedges?

On our website, if you click the plus signs in the portfolio above, the positions expand to give you a better look at the hedges. For example, this is what the MARA position looked like expanded.

As you can see, MARA was hedged with an optimal collar, as were the other positions in this portfolio. Our system estimates returns both ways to determine which type of hedge is best. We elaborated on that process in a previous post:&nbsp;When To Hedge With Puts Versus Collars.

What Happens Now

We&#39;ll check back in a few months and see how this portfolio is doing. If the market keeps going up, this portfolio should do well. If crypto crashes, taking the market with it within the next six months, we know ahead of time that the downside risk of this portfolio will be strictly limited. The Dogecoin Rally

What do the contrasting trajectories of Tesla (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) and Dogecoin&nbsp;(CRYPTO:DOGE)&nbsp;this year tell us about the current, bizarre market environment? Consider a few points. To begin with, there&#39;s Elon Musk&#39;s involvement with both, as&nbsp;CEO/&quot;Technoking&quot; of Tesla and pumper of Dogecoin.

Late Tuesday night, Elon Musk to a break from his responsibilities as Tesla Technoking, CEO/CTO of SpaceX, and Saturday Night Live <a href="https://www.nydailynews.com/snyde/ny-elon-musk-hosting-snl-20210424-luvpkymwxjc2zohapvq6giifqi-story.html" rel="nofollow">guest host</a> to listen in to a Twitter Spaces conversation about Dogecoin.&nbsp;

The next day, Dogecoin surpassed Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC)&nbsp;as the most heavily traded crypto coin, with $19.4 billion of it trading over the previous 24 hours.

By way of comparison, the most heavily traded stock on Wednesday was Tesla, with about $14.7 billion of it trading on the day.&nbsp;

As Compound Capital Advisors founder Charlie Bilello noted, Dogecoin&#39;s market cap had exceeded that of more than 80% of the stocks in the S&amp;P 500.&nbsp;

With a third of 2021 in the books, Dogecoin was up more than 11,000% year-to-date, while shares of Tesla were down about 5%.&nbsp;

What&#39;s Going On

Has there been a rotation from cult stocks like Tesla to meme alt-coins like Doge?

Or is <a href="https://builtin.com/hardware/simulation-theory" rel="nofollow">the simulation</a> just messing with us? Roko Mijic, of <a href="https://www.lesswrong.com/tag/rokos-basilisk" rel="nofollow">Roko&#39;s Basilisk</a> fame in rationalist circles, suggested recently that Dogecoin could eventually become the crypto version of silver to Bitcoin&#39;s gold.&nbsp;

One point in favor of the simulation theory is how all of this is oddly connected: Elon Musk met his current girlfriend, Claire Boucher, aka Grimes when he <a href="https://pagesix.com/2018/05/07/elon-musk-quietly-dating-musician-grimes/" rel="nofollow">found out</a> that she had anticipated his pun about Roko&#39;s Basilisk:&nbsp;

In 2015, she created a character named &ldquo;Rococo Basilisk&rdquo; for a video of her song &ldquo;Flesh Without Blood.&rdquo; &ldquo;I don&rsquo;t know if you&rsquo;ve heard of Roko&rsquo;s Basilisk,&rdquo; she told Fuse. &ldquo;[This character] is doomed to be eternally tortured by an artificial intelligence, but she&rsquo;s also kind of like Marie Antoinette.&rdquo;

&ldquo;Elon was researching the idea of joking about Rococo Basilisk, and when he saw Grimes had already joked about it, he reached out to her,&rdquo; says the insider. &ldquo;Grimes said this was the first time in three years that anyone understood the joke. They were both poking fun at AI.&rdquo;

Navigating The Insanity&nbsp;

Simulation or not, our view on the crypto craziness remains that it&#39;s analogous to the Dot-Com era: some transformative innovation wrapped in a larger bubble. A few cryptocurrencies may end up with Amazon (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>)-like trajectories, while most of the rest will be more like TheGlobe.com (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TGLO#OTC">TGLO</a>).&nbsp;

Our approach to the current market remains to buy and hedge a handful of names that fit these two criteria:

<ul>
	<li>They look likely to perform well over the next six months.&nbsp;</li>
	<li>They are relatively inexpensive to hedge.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>

The second criterion is much easier to find than the first. We simply apply our hedging algorithm to find least-expensive, or optimal hedges, and compare the costs.&nbsp;

The first criterion has been hard. As we mentioned last week (<a href="https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2021-04-30/discovery-amazon" rel="nofollow">Discovery In The Amazon</a>), one of the factors we use, a particular gauge of options market sentiment, flipped from outperforming to underperforming this year. Another gauge of options market sentiment has been generating significant outperformance over the past year, but judging from the final, 6-month performance of our top ten names from November 5th, we worried it might have peaked.&nbsp;

We track the performance of our different factors each trading day, and we were surprised to see our outperforming one tick up this week, given the weak performance of that top names cohort from November 5th.&nbsp;

Accounting For Randomness

As it turned out, there was no error. The discrepancy was simple: we publicly post the performance of one top names cohort per week, usually the one from a Thursday six months ago. But we post a top names cohort every weekday the market is open&nbsp;and track the performance of those too; our calibration factors are updated daily based on that performance. The factor in question had picked up on May 3rd because our top ten names from November&nbsp;3rd had finished up 101% over the next six months. led by Diebold (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DBD#NYSE">DBD</a>) and the triple-leveraged Direxion ETFs RETL, TNA, SOXL.&nbsp;

The way to account for this sort of randomness, if you&#39;re using our system to create hedged portfolios, is to not put all of your money to work on the same day. Splitting your money into a few tranches and investing them at different times should smooth out returns over time.&nbsp;

Options Start Trading On Coinbase

Options started trading on Coinbase (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/COIN#NASDAQ">COIN</a>) on Tuesday, so longs can now hedge their shares in the crypto platform. We&#39;ve posted a couple of hedges for the company below, in the event Anatoly Karlin&#39;s prediction of a crypto crash this year comes to pass.

Before we get to those, let&#39;s clear up a bit of misconception about the company&#39;s IPO last week.&nbsp;

No, Insiders Didn&#39;t Dump Most Of Their Shares

One misconception about the Coinbase IPO last week is that insiders dumped most of their shares. That was exemplified by tweets such as the one below, by Peter Schiff.&nbsp;

First a bit of context regarding Schiff: he runs a gold company, and lamented last month that his son had gone all-in on bitcoin.&nbsp;

So, that may have colored his thoughts on Coinbase to some extent. As to Schiff&#39;s claim that Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong dumped 71% of his shares in the company: no. The percentages Schiff referred to are of the shares set aside for the direct listing. In Armstrong&#39;s case, that amounted to about $292 million worth of shares. Armstrong owns&nbsp;<a href="https://www.forbes.com/profile/brian-armstrong/?sh=12bcf5455077" rel="nofollow">19% of Coinbase</a>; his total stake was worth about $8.3 billion as of Tuesday&#39;s close. With that in mind, let&#39;s look at how new Coinbase shareholders can stay long while limiting their downside risk in case the crypto winter starts this year.&nbsp;

Downside Protection For Coinbase

For both of these hedges, we used the January, 2022 expirations to cover all of 2021 (there&#39;s also a January, 2023 expiration for Coinbase options now). In both cases, we scanned for hedges against a greater-than-23% decline, because that was the smallest decline you could hedge against while using optimal puts.&nbsp;

Uncapped Upside, (High!) Positive Cost

These were the optimal, or least expensive, puts, as of Tuesday&#39;s close, to hedge 200 shares of Coinbase against a &gt;23% decline by next January 21st.&nbsp;

You can see above why 23% was the smallest decline threshold available on Tuesday: the cost of protecting against a &gt;23% decline was a whopping 21.97% of position value. Hedging against a smaller decline would have cost more than the decline itself. That cost was calculated at the ask, to be conservative, but it&#39;s still extremely expensive. By way of comparison, the cost of hedging Goldman Sachs (GS) against the same, &gt;23% decline by next January was 3.4% of position value.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Capped Upside, Negative Cost

If you were willing to cap your possible upside at 35% by next January, this was the optimal collar to hedge 200 shares of COIN against a &gt;23% decline over the same time frame.&nbsp;

For this hedge, the net cost was negative, meaning you would have collected a net credit of $140 when opening the collar. That&#39;s assuming you placed both trades at the worst ends of their respective spreads, buying the puts at the ask and selling the calls at the bid. In practice, of course, you can often buy and sell options at some price between the bid and ask.&nbsp;

Amazon Versus TheGlobe.com

A point we made in a previous post is that crypto can be both a bubble and technologically transformative. That was the case with the dot-coms in the late &#39;90s.&nbsp;

If they think Coinbase will end up being the Amazon of the crypto bubble, hedged investors can use their appreciated puts to buy more of it after a crash. If they&#39;re not sure, they can exit, while strictly limiting their downside risk.&nbsp;
