After reinstating toxic waste restrictions for coal-fired power plants last year, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officially began enforcing the regulations this year.&nbsp;
The renewal of these Obama-era restrictions are likely just a first step from a reinvigorated EPA that wants to crack down on pollution more aggressively than ever before.
<h2>Coal Ash Ponds Are A Problem Decades in the Making</h2>
Before the Clean Air Act of 1970, coal-fired power plants were pumping coal ash directly into the air, forcing locals living near the plants to breathe in ash that contains 25 heavy metals including mercury, lead, arsenic and other toxic materials.
After the Clean Air Act, plants began storing that ash instead in landfills and ash ponds. As of January, there were <a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/859266/number-of-coal-power-plants-by-country/">240</a> coal-fired power plants operating across the United States, responsible for maintaining over 1,100<a href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/01/11/politics/biden-epa-coal-ash-ponds-enforcement-climate/index.html"> coal-ash ponds</a> and landfills.&nbsp; The EPA cites that at least 500 of these coal ash ponds are unlined &mdash; at least 100 of which are sitting directly on top of groundwater that ultimately gets pumped into millions of Americans&rsquo; homes.&nbsp;
Despite the name &ldquo;pond&rdquo;, some can be exceedingly large. One coal-ash pond <a href="https://www.cnn.com/interactive/2021/12/us/coal-ash-ponds-plant-barry/">in southern Alabama</a> is roughly 597 acres &mdash; almost the size of the National Mall.&nbsp;
Rather than fixing the problem, these coal-ash ponds just turned air pollution into water pollution. For people living next to these ponds, chronic arsenic exposure makes them<a href="https://appvoices.org/coalash/background/"> 900% more likely to get cancer </a>than someone who smokes a pack of cigarettes a day. Aside from the increased cancer risk, coal ash causes lung and heart problems, stomach illnesses and developmental issues in children growing up nearby.&nbsp;
<h2>The Threat Of Spills Compounds The Health And Safety Risks Of Coal Ash Ponds</h2>
When pipes break or dams fail, massive spills flood the surrounding areas, damaging homes, killing wildlife and clogging roads and rivers with toxic sludge.
After a dam failed in 2008, 500 million gallons of coal ash sludge were unleashed on <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2008/US/12/23/tennessee.sludge.spill/">Kingston, Tennessee</a>, killing thousands of fish and blanketing nearly 400 acres of fields and neighborhoods with toxic sludge. The cleanup cost Tennessee Valley Authority (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tvc#NYSE">TVC</a>), the company responsible, $1.2 billion and took seven years to complete.&nbsp;
In 2014, 39,000 tons of coal ash sludge and 27 million gallons of contaminated wastewater from Duke Energy Corp.&rsquo;s (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/duk#NYSE">DUK</a>) plants poured into the Dan River in North Carolina, wiping out turtles and fish in the river and sending toxic waste as far as 70 miles downstream.&nbsp;
The cleanup from that spill cost Duke $5.6 billion and a lawsuit filed later against the company forced Duke to spend over $4 billion more to excavate another <a href="https://www.utilitydive.com/news/duke-agrees-to-largest-coal-ash-clean-up-in-us-after-years-of-fighting-with/569699/">80 million tons</a> of ash stored in ponds across the state.&nbsp;
Duke Energy&rsquo;s cleanup is reportedly the largest and most expensive cleanup effort to date, but dozens of other spills have occurred before and since then, each taking decades of cleanup and monitoring and each costing millions or billions of dollars to deal with.
<h2>The Technology Making Clean Closure Possible And Affordable</h2>
In total, over <a href="https://www.sierraclub.org/sierra/2021-2-march-april/feature/can-harvesting-rare-earth-elements-solve-coal-ash-crisis">3 billion tons</a> of coal ash, spread across over 1,400 sites across the country, need to be cleaned up - and hopefully not at consumers&rsquo; expense. To help tackle that massive and costly task, ME2C Environmental (OTCMKTS: MEEC) (ME2C), a company that develops eco-friendly sorbents (substances that can absorb or collect other materials around it) for the energy sector, is working on a new technology that would clean up toxic coal ash waste and capture rare earth elements (REEs), thus providing a significant revenue stream for the utilities to offset a large amount of the cleanup costs.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Some of the 25 heavy metals in coal ash are toxins like lead, mercury, and arsenic, which make this crisis so urgent. But others are rare earth elements, valuable metals used for building things like rechargeable batteries, wind turbines, fiber optics cables and dozens of other important technologies.
While the United States used to dominate the global REE market, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/04/17/the-new-us-plan-to-rival-chinas-dominance-in-rare-earth-metals.html">about 80% of the REEs</a> in the market today come from China, the new global leader. That&rsquo;s because capturing the valuable resource is typically labor intensive and environmentally hazardous. The Biden Administration is looking to shift that balance, as seen in the<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/04/17/the-new-us-plan-to-rival-chinas-dominance-in-rare-earth-metals.html"> $30 million</a> earmarked for bolstering the domestic supply of REE in the recent infrastructure bill.&nbsp;
By capturing REEs, ME2C&rsquo;s sorbent technology looks to offset the high cost of cleanup and incentivize plants to clean ash ponds, rather than capping the ponds in place, a cheaper but less effective approach.&nbsp;
After engaging Pennsylvania State University&rsquo;s College of Earth and Mineral Sciences to continue testing the technology, which ME2C began developing in 2019, ME2C has <a href="https://www.me2cenvironmental.com/news-media/press-releases/detail/614/me2c-environmental-completes-initial-testing-of-its-rare">announced</a> positive results from the initial round of validation testing completed by Penn State in September of last year, showing REE extraction rates as high as <a href="https://www.me2cenvironmental.com/news-media/press-releases/detail/620/me2c-environmental-reports-third-quarter-2021-financial">90%</a>. The company has stated that they are in a final testing phase currently and plan to begin pilot projects and in-field testing of the tech prior to seeking license agreements with commercial business partners later this year.&nbsp;

High-quality coal ash, a byproduct from mercury emissions created by coal-fired utilities, is widely used in industry including the heavy industrial and transportation sectors to create cement, concrete, and asphalt.
Low-quality coal ash, by contrast, is largely just dumped into ponds owned by power companies and has been for decades, damaging the water, soil and surrounding environment with mercury, arsenic and other contaminants.
ME2C Environmental (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/meec#OTCQB">MEEC</a>), formerly known as Midwest Energy Emissions Corp., reports that it is trying to solve the runoff problem with an environmentally far friendlier approach while it also attempts to extract valuable materials, namely rare earth elements (REE), during that same process. These coal ash ponds are not only toxic for our environment, they are rich in REEs.
The challenge is huge as there are an estimated <a href="https://medium.com/authority-magazine/richard-macpherson-of-me2c-environmental-five-strategies-our-company-is-using-to-tackle-climate-af672b334367">1,100 ponds across 37 states in the country</a> with coal ash contamination. Even among those that report data, environmental advocates such as nonprofit <a href="https://earthjustice.org/features/coal-ash-contaminated-sites-map?gclid=CjwKCAiAksyNBhAPEiwAlDBeLCljDCDQNW2qR5YBUeMSDnGJVfQgxDzGG7nGH7zatZYGNZvn8B02gxoC1y4QAvD_BwE">Earthjustice show</a> a vast majority are reporting levels of toxins significantly above federal limits regarding safe drinking water.
Duke Energy Corp. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/duk#NYSE">DUK</a>) is among the many energy companies seeking solutions to dealing with the coal ash runoff issue. Last year, the North Carolina-based company <a href="https://news.duke-energy.com/releases/releases-20210125">reached an agreement</a> on how to proceed with such remediation.
And the problem is long standing. In 2008, utility group Tennessee Valley Authority (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tvc#NYSE">TVC</a>) released 5.4 million cubic <a href="https://www.epa.gov/tn/epa-response-kingston-tva-coal-ash-spill">yards of coal ash following a dike failure</a>, the waste spilling eventually into the Emory River.
The energy sector has reportedly been aware of the coal ash issue for years but the cleanup cost is extraordinary - in the billions for larger plants, such as Duke. The cost is the responsibility of the utility and cannot be passed through the rate structure to the consumer. Michael Regan, current EPA Director, previously headed the NC&rsquo;s Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) leading the charge against Duke.&nbsp; Michael Regan and other key departments, such as the Department of Energy and the H.R. Select Committee on the Climate Crisis, are bringing coal ash to the forefront. Regulations in the area, such as those recently announced for wastewater, are expected.
<h2>Patented Technology Might Help</h2>
Texas-based ME2C&rsquo;s approach to try to tackle such a massive problem, one that company CEO Richard MacPherson calls the &ldquo;largest environmental issue&rdquo; currently facing the United States, is to focus on their skillset in chemisorption technology.
Also known as sorbent technology, it is able to capture emissions such as mercury at a more efficient and cost-effective rate than other competing technologies, MacPherson said. ME2C&rsquo;s patented sorbent technology, known as SEA&#9415; (Sorbent Enhancement Additive), provides other benefits, including maintaining the quality of the coal ash, which ME2C&rsquo;s customers use as a revenue stream selling the ash for industry use. ME2C&rsquo;s expertise in chemisorption and sorbent technologies led to their looking at this approach for other applications, such as rare earth element capture, wastewater, and coal ash remediation.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Chemisorption extraction of REEs, which are a valuable component in such sectors and products as automobile catalysts, batteries, and medical devices, may prove to be an exciting alternative to traditional REE extraction processes.
Currently, much of the world&rsquo;s rare earth elements extraction is performed in China. The U.S. wants to change that by extracting and processing those elements domestically, but there is a major problem in that the typical process for doing so can be environmentally degrading.
Acid leaching is the most commonly used method of processing extracted REEs, and this process requires significant amounts of caustic acid to separate the elements from the ore. The use of such a product, as well as its disposal, can cause environmental problems.
ME2C believes its technology will both solve the over-reliance on China for REEs and will also provide a safer technology process in doing so.
&ldquo;Our technology will allow REEs to be processed domestically in a highly cost-effective, environmentally safe manner thus ensuring a more secure U.S. infrastructure,&rdquo; the company says.
After completing a second phase of testing with Penn State&rsquo;s Center for Earth &amp; Mineral Sciences, the company is working toward in-field, pilot scale testing to begin over the next few months. The larger-scale testing in a real-world environment might allow ME2C to determine a commercial value and will lay a path to introducing the technology to real applications and commercial entities.
We wonder, could this chemisorption technology be used for other metals, such as copper and gold? The company has not discounted this, stating that sorbent technologies can be used for many types of extraction applications. ME2C Environmental believes that after nearly 15 years of building a solid mercury capture business, they are only just beginning.

The Tennessee River is closed to all commercial vessel traffic as higher-than-normal rainfall cause flooding and swift currents along the river.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers closed nine locks on the main stem of the river that are used by commercial vessels, said Tennessee Valley Authority (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tvc#NYSE">TVC</a>) spokesman Scott Brooks. That effectively shuts the 650-mile navigable stretch from Paducah, Kentucky to Knoxville, Tennessee. &nbsp;
Rainfall levels that are triple historical averages across the Tennessee Valley are causing dam spillovers along the Tennessee River, creating high currents, heavy flooding and turbulence.
The TVA said that between five and 12 inches of rain fell over parts of Tennessee last week, causing the severe flooding.
Brooks said the Pickwick and Kentucky locks at the mouth of the Tennessee River are at record levels. The Tennessee River <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Tennessee_floods">has not seen flooding like this since 2010</a>, Brooks said.

The TVA, which manages navigation on the river, said &quot;barge traffic is practically at a standstill&quot; all the way down to the Mississippi River due to the flooding. Until the high waters recede, barges will likely be idle for several days, the TVA said.
The U.S. Coast Guard said that at the Chickamauga lock one downbound and two upbound barges are halted due to the closures.
Among companies potentially affected by the flooding are Westlake Chemical (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/wlk#NYSE">WLK</a>), which has a major chemical plant at Calvert City, Kentucky and Seacor Marine Holdings (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/smhi#NYSE">SMHI</a>), which provides barge towing service along the Tennessee River. The companies declined comment on operations along the Tennessee River.
The Corps said some 35.7 million tons of commodities were moved on the Tennessee River during 2017, a 10 percent drop from the year earlier.
Coal volumes shipped along the river have fallen 37 percent since 2013 as the <a href="https://www.npr.org/2019/02/14/694769097/trump-tweet-fails-to-save-kentucky-coal-fired-power-plant">TVA reduces its dependence on coal-fired electricity generation</a>.

The Tennessee Valley Authority (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/tvc#NYSE">TVC</a>) completed a lease-purchase transaction on Tuesday that provides $1 billion in financing to support TVA's vision of national leadership in low-cost, cleaner energy by 2020.

TVA will lease the John Sevier Combined Cycle Plant in Rogersville, Tenn., to John Sevier Combined Cycle Generation LLC, a limited liability company, for which it will receive $1 billion in proceeds. TVA will complete the 880-megawatt natural gas-fired plant, and then lease it back over 30 years. The plant is scheduled to begin commercial operation this summer.

The financing for the lease purchase consists of a $100 million equity investment and a $900 million bond issue, both of which are secured by TVA's rental payments. The bonds are issued by the limited liability company and are rated Aaa by Moody's Investors Service, AA by Fitch Ratings, and AA-minus by Standard &amp; Poor's. The bonds are not obligations of TVA or the United States, and are not federally guaranteed.

TVA Secures $1 Billion Financing Through Lease-Purchase of John Sevier Combined Cycle Plant  

<a href='http://www.stockopedia.co.uk/share-prices/ortac-resources-LON:OTC/' title='Ortac Resources Share Price OTC'>Ortac Resources</a> (LON:OTC) , the AIM quoted gold exploration and development company working in Slovakia, has launched a drilling campaign at its Kremnica gold project. The programme is scheduled to involve 5,000 metres of diamond drilling and is being carried out in tandem with a scoping study of the project.
Kremnica already boasts a JORC-compliant resource of 1.1 million ounces of gold but Ortac now wants to take closer look at areas of the deposit where there is currently little or no information. Ortac joined the AIM market last September when ex-Kryso Resources MD Vassilios Carellas led a series of deals involving the acquisition of the Slovakian gold assets of TSX-listed Tournigan Energy (TSX:TVC). Mr Carellas has since brought in Snowden Mining Industry Consultants to re-work all the old data and launch a scoping study at Kremnica. With £8.4m raised from investors in February, the latest drill plans, along with additional geological and geotechnical data, should increase the resource and push additional ounces into higher confidence Indicated and Measured categories. <a href="http://www.stockopedia.co.uk/content/vassilios-carellas-sets-his-sights-on-gold-in-slovakia-with-ortac-resources-54939/">In an interview with Stockopedia in March, Mr Carellas said he hoped the forthcoming drill programme would culminate in a resource of about 1.5 million ounces</a>.
The plans for the drilling programme were submitted to the various stakeholders and regulatory authorities in March this year. Following receipt of the necessary approvals to start, a local contractor, Geovrty-Drillrock s.r.o., a company with extensive previous experience of drilling the style of mineralisation at Kremnica, commenced the programme. Ortac is still working closely with Snowden and newly appointed Knight Piesold Canada and a number of independent consultants in advancing the scoping study. Elements recently completed include the conducting of additional metallurgical test work, blasting and vibration studies as well as the re-design and locating of tailings storage facilities. The results of the report are expected in the second half of 2011.
Mr Carellas said: “I am delighted to announce the commencement of the drilling campaign at Kremnica, our flagship project. The programme will focus on targeting areas of the deposit where we have limited information, and where results will enable the company to get a better geological understanding of these areas, whilst at the same time expanding and upgrading our current 1.1Moz Au eq. The scoping study is also advancing well, with the completion of a number of important elements. These have been completed in tandem with a number of our consultants who have made a number of site visits in recent months, and who are working closely with our technical team, in order to complete the study as soon as practicable. We remain fully committed to advancing this highly prospective project and we are working closely with all parties to take it up the development curve and unlocking value for the benefit of all stakeholders.”

Ortac Resources launches new drilling programme at Kremnica gold project

When Vassilios Carellas resigned his position as managing director of <a href='http://www.stockopedia.co.uk/share-prices/kryso-resources-LON:KYS/' title='Kryso Resources Share Price KYS'>Kryso Resources</a> (LON:KYS) in May 2009, he jetted off to enjoy his first summer holiday for 15 years. However, shortly before he left, David Paxton, the chief executive of <a href='http://www.stockopedia.co.uk/share-prices/vatukoula-gold-mines-LON:VGM/' title='Vatukoula Gold Mines Share Price VGM'>Vatukoula Gold Mines</a> (LON:VGM) had a word in his ear about a potential new project. On his return, Carellas had barely unpacked his suitcase before finding himself back on a flight, this time to the historically rich volcanic gold fields of central Slovakia. When he got there, he liked what he saw.
By September 2010 the stage was set for a series of deals that involved private company Ortac Resources acquiring the Slovakian gold assets of TSX-listed Tournigan Energy (TSX:TVC). The company then completed a reverse takeover of AIM cash shell Templar Minerals. <a href='http://www.stockopedia.co.uk/share-prices/ortac-resources-LON:OTC/' title='Ortac Resources Share Price OTC'>Ortac Resources</a> (LON:OTC) , which kept its name, took on Templar's modest iron ore assets in Brazil but, more importantly, secured the highly prospective Kremnica gold deposit in Slovakia. 
Within days, Carellas brought in Snowden Mining Industry Consultants to re-work all the old data and launch a scoping study at Kremnica, where a resource of around 760,000 ounces of gold was already in place. In January, that assessment confirmed a JORC Code compliant resource of 1.1 million ounces of gold equivalent but Carellas remains keen to boost the resource even further. With £8.4m raised from investors in February, further drilling is planned this year and the company is looking closer at how production from the project will eventually work. In the mean time, Carellas has his eye on building out Ortac's presence in Slovakia, perhaps with acquisitions, and taking the company's resource base towards 2 million ounces.
Vassilios, how did events unfold in the lead up to bringing Ortac to AIM?
Ortac had been in Slovakia for six years prior to the reverse takeover. It had a number of exploration properties in the east of the country and it was basically in the right place at the right time in terms of Kremnica. Tournigan were seeking to cut back on the number of projects they had and sold off a uranium exploration project in the States, a gold project in Ireland and the Kremnica gold project. They have renamed themselves from Tournigan Gold to Tournigan Energy and are now focused purely on their uranium assets in the east of Slovakia. Ortac then made the move from a private company to a PLC through the reversal into Templar Minerals. Templar still has iron ore rights in Brazil and we have done a bit of work on that now. But we are looking to farm that out and we have got someone who is quite willing to run with it, so probably within the next three to six months that should be a separate entity with Ortac retaining a holding.
What is the attraction of Slovakia and the Kremnica project?
This region of Slovakia has been mining gold for 2000 years. Back in the 14th and 15th centuries the central Slovakian volcanic field was considered to be one of the leading gold producing areas in the world. Mining at Kremnica dates back 1000 years. You had old timers there chipping away at the high grade veins but what you have is a huge vein system which is up to 100 metres in width. Obviously some of the high grade bits have been taken out in places but the drill holes have shown there are a lot of sweet spots in the ore body. You are sitting with a 1.5 to 2 gram resource, outcropping on surface that is amenable to open pit mining. There are not many deposits like that these days and a lot of them are underground, so from that point of view we are quite fortunate. The infrastructure is very good, the main road between Poland and Hungary runs through the project area, there are power lines running overhead, there is water and there is an aluminium processing plant 13km to the south of us. So all the infrastructure is there, all the engineering workshops and fabrication and services, all the services that you need to run and operate a mine are there.
What has been happening at the project in recent years?
Historically there was a small processing plant there but after the split of Czechoslovakia there was a privatisation programme and a local businessman privatised the asset and stripped the plant and sold everything. The last mining activity took place on surface in 1991 and that was very small scale. Between 1991 and 2007 there were two companies before us and between them they spent about €17m exploring the project. Prior to that the Czechoslovakian State probably spent easily $10m on exploration, so you can say quite comfortably that $25m-$30m has been spent on this project to date getting it to where it is today.
What are you immediate plans for the project?
Well we've got the money now. We came out of with a resource update in January and what it has shown is that there are areas in the resource that have been estimated, so in other words you have blocks with grades in it, but for whatever reasons Snowden felt that there wasn't enough data so they haven't classified it. So the programme is now to drill about 5000 metres, which is basically an in-fill and exploration drill programme. What we anticipate ending up with is a resource of about 1.5 million ounces, which is what Tournigan had in the past and it is what we are seeing in the model, it is just that the model hasn't been classified. We hope to have that drilling completed by the end of this year and then come out with another update and then we should have further ounces in the higher confidence categories as well as a larger resource. So that's the immediate plan for this year. 
We are also in the process of completing a scoping study on the back of the current resource that we have just completed. We are looking at all the various options from a small pit to a big pit to using various processing locations and using conventional tailings, paste tailings and just seeing what we can do. Obviously being in Europe, the cleaner we can be the better but obviously the cleaner you are the more expense there is, so we'll just have to see how clean we can be as a company. Obviously there is EU regulation but we would like to go one step further. Those are the sorts of things we are looking at, seeing how we can do something that's going to have very little impact in terms of a footprint, but a huge effect in terms of the economics in the region.
Is this a project that Ortac is fully prepared to take into production?
Ideally but obviously along the way if an Eldorado Gold (NYSE:EGO) or a <a href='http://www.stockopedia.co.uk/share-prices/european-goldfields-LON:EGU/' title='European Goldfields Share Price EGU'>European Goldfields</a> (LON:EGU) likes what we are doing and thinks that there is value in it for them and they can make an offer to shareholders that we can't refuse, then we'll do it. But we have got a project director who has brought mines into production before and he is driving the scoping study. If it does get to the point where we need to raise finance and get into production ourselves, we can certainly do it. It's not complicated; you don't have any infrastructure challenges.
Are there other mining operators close to where you are in Slovakia?
There is a little underground mine about 15-20km to the south-west of us. <a href='http://www.stockopedia.co.uk/share-prices/emed-mining-LON:EMED/' title='Emed Mining Share Price EMED'>Emed Mining</a> (LON:EMED) have their Biely Vrch project about 30km to the south of us. In the east of the country you have got metal works, U.S. Steel (NYSE:X) are in there, Tournigan have got their uranium projects. There is a Canadian company called Global Minerals (TSXV: CTG), and they have got quite an interesting antimony project there as well. There is also quite a big coal industry. So there is activity but not a huge amount of activity in terms of real mining in the precious metals sector, the reason being that prices were so deflated. When Czechoslovakia split back in the 1990s metal prices were quite low. The State was continually funding these operations but some of them were just not making ends meet and then they started privatising them just to reduce the burden. So now other companies have come and picked them up and developed them and are moving them forward.
What sort of response did you get from the market when you raised funds in February? Was it a challenging deal?
No, we were over subscribed, there was a lot of interest. I think the market is looking for the next European Goldfields, looking for a company that is picking up assets and that is the sort of story that we would like to emulate. We want to use this asset to grow within the region, use it as a stepping stone to other assets, bolt on another one or two advanced stage projects and then have various projects moving up that curve towards production. Hopefully then you'll get the attraction in the market.
Have you seen many potential targets or future opportunities?
There are a couple out there that are quite interesting. Generally speaking, certainly in Europe there is a lot and not just in gold or precious metals. There are areas in Europe now that are only just opening up that have been closed to exploration companies because the governments didn't see it as something that was necessary. Now the EU has got a minerals directive to encourage countries to actually start using their own resources. They are obviously realising that the Chinese are squeezing the market in terms of likes of rare earths and antimony. It is going to take a while for some of these countries, particularly the likes of France and Germany and countries where they have gone through that cycle already and have populations that are very comfortable with the environment. Countries like that will find it quite challenging to actually go back and start drilling holes. It is going to take time but we are seeing a much more positive sentiment towards the resource sector in Europe.
In the mean time, Ortac does have other exploration licences to keep it busy. Among those licences, which are the most significant?
Yes, we have got projects in eastern Slovakia. The most advanced is a project called Zlatá Baňa which again lies in volcanic fields and that has a historic resource of somewhere between 300,000 to 500,000 ounces, depending which cut off you use. I suppose 5-10 years ago that would have been considered a marginal project but today, with prices the way they are, it is potentially of value. Once we've got our Kremnica project under way we will start focusing on this. The data is there, it is just a matter of putting the data into a computer database and generating a model on that. We might drill a few holes just to verify the interpretations and on the back of that we could then have a potential resource of 500,000 ounces equivalent for that project. All things going well, by the end of this year, early next year potentially we could have 2 million ounces under our belt, 1.5 million ounces at Kremnica and another 500,000 ounces here, so we could potentially double our resource base.
Finally, how costly is this going to be for Ortac to develop and what factors will ease the transition towards production?
It will be no different to anywhere else in the world. In terms of shipping it will probably be cheaper and in terms of speed it will probably be quicker because you don't have to set up huge workshops, everything is outsourced. So it is just a matter of building the plant, you don't have to worry about building power lines and roads and water. Plus, a major asset is the skilled workforce. You've got skilled labour, good infrastructure, the services are there, there is no exploration risk and the deposits are explored. It is not a matter of if, it is just a matter of when.

Vassilios Carellas sets his sights on gold in Slovakia with Ortac Resources
