On Wednesday, the FDA approved Mesoblast Limited&#8217;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MESO#NASDAQ">MESO</a>) Ryoncil (remestemcel-L) as the first mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/12/g42566997/mesoblasts-ryoncil-is-the-first-u-s-fda-approved-mesenchymal-stromal-cell-msc-therapy" rel="noreferrer noopener">therapy in the U.S</a>.
Ryoncil is the only MSC therapy approved in the U.S. for any indication and the only therapy for steroid-refractory acute graft versus host disease (SR-aGvHD) in children 2 months and older, including adolescents.
Ryoncil contains MSCs, a type of cell that can have various roles in the body and can differentiate into multiple other types of cells. These MSCs are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-approves-first-mesenchymal-stromal-cell-therapy-treat-steroid-refractory-acute-graft-versus-host" rel="noreferrer noopener">isolated</a> from the bone marrow of healthy adult human donors.&nbsp;
Steroid-refractory acute graft-versus-host disease is a serious condition that can occur as a complication of allogeneic hematopoietic (blood) stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT).
In allo-HSCT, a patient receives hematopoietic stem cells from a healthy donor to replace their stem cells and form new blood cells.
This procedure is often performed as part of treatment for certain types of blood cancers, blood disorders, or immune system disorders.
Annually, in the U.S., approximately 10,000 patients undergo an allogeneic bone marrow transplant, 1,500 of whom are children.
Approximately 50% develop aGvHD, and almost half of those do not respond to steroids, the recognized first-line treatment.
In a single-arm multi-center Phase 3 trial of children with SR-aGvHD, 89% of whom had high severity Grade C or Grade D disease, 70% achieved an overall response by Day 28 of treatment with Ryoncil, a measure that predicts survival in aGVHD.
Study participants who had a partial or mixed response to treatment—meaning that there was improved condition in one organ with either no change (partial) or worsening condition (mixed) in another organ—received additional infusions once weekly for an additional four weeks.
Sixteen study participants (30%) had a complete response to treatment 28 days after receiving Ryoncil, while 22 participants (41%) had a partial response.
Ryoncil treatment was not discontinued or interrupted in any patient for any laboratory abnormality, and the full course was completed without interruption in more than 85% of patients.

Canoo is currently in advanced discussions with multiple capital sources but acknowledges the tough decision to furlough staff, particularly during the holiday season. The company expressed hope of bringing employees back once its financial situation stabilizes.

Canoo said, &#8220;We regret having to furlough our employees, especially during the holidays, but we have no choice at this point. We are hopeful that we will be able to bring them back to work soon.&#8221;
In its third quarter reported in November, the company revealed a quarterly cash outflow of $31.3 million, down 20.7% from the second quarter and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/11/41956101/canoo-q3-earnings-revenue-miss-eps-beat-continued-operations-consolidation-and-more" rel="noreferrer noopener">down 58.6% on a year-over-year basis</a>.
As of the end of the third quarter, the company had $16 million in cash, cash equivalents, and restricted cash. Canoo is focused on consolidating operations and reducing costs, which includes a shift in its manufacturing footprint from California to Texas and Oklahoma, the company said in a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/11/g41954695/canoo-inc-announces-third-quarter-2024-results" rel="noreferrer noopener">release dated November 14.</a>
This restructuring is expected to save the company $12 million to $14 million annually.
&#8220;This will continue to be a difficult and critical period as we do everything we can to get the capital in place, bring jobs back online, and get back on track with our step-level manufacturing plan,&#8221; said Tony Aquila, Investor, Executive Chairman, and CEO in November.

Tesla Inc.'s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) new vehicle registrations in the EU are continuing to drop,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/tech/24/11/41892379/tesla-offers-a-year-of-supercharging-for-free-in-europe-as-it-chases-record-q4-deliveries-to-outpace-a-slowdown" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">threatening the company's global EV delivery target</a>&nbsp;for the year.
What Happened:&nbsp;Tesla had 18,786 new vehicle registrations in the European Union in November, marking a drop of 41% from the corresponding period last year, according to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers&#8217; Association (ACEA).
Battery electric vehicle registrations overall fell 9.5% in the EU last month to 130,757 units owing to the drop in major markets such as France and Germany.
For the full year 2023, Tesla delivered 1,808,581 vehicles around the globe. To mark a growth over last year, the company has to deliver at least 514,926 vehicles in the three months through the end of December. Tesla has never managed to deliver over 500,000 EVs in a quarter to date, making this an ambitious target.
Why It Matters:&nbsp;According to Tesla researcher&nbsp;Troy Teslike, the low sales in Europe are likely to impact Tesla's aim to prevent a drop in yearly deliveries.
&#8220;While sales have increased in China, they aren&#8217;t enough to fully offset the decline. Tesla is still trying to avoid a drop in total car sales this year compared to last year, but they're struggling with demand problems in the US and Europe,"&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/tech/24/11/41894615/tesla-q4-deliveries-expected-to-set-new-records-but-not-enough-to-avoid-yearly-sales-decline-says-researcher" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Teslike said</a>&nbsp;in a post on X earlier this month.
As per ACEA data, Tesla had 211,405 new vehicle registrations in the EU from January through the end of November, marking a drop of over 15% year-on-year.
Price Action:&nbsp;Tesla stock fell 8.3% on Wednesday to close at $440.13. Year-to-date, the stock is up 77.2%, according to&nbsp;<a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/dashboard" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Benzinga Pro data</a>.

Tesla EU Registrations Plunge 41% In November, Casting Shadow On Q4 Target Of Over 500,000 EV Deliveries

President-elect Donald Trump unexpectedly dismissed a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/12/42544562/congressional-leaders-reach-bipartisan-deal-to-avert-government-shutdown">bipartisan proposal</a> on Wednesday, increasing the possibility of a U.S. government ahead of Christmas.
However, according to research firm Edward Jones, markets tend to look through the noise, with U.S. stocks staying positive half the times during the past 20 government shutdowns since 1976.
What Happened: &#8220;The uncertainty that a potential government shutdown introduces can lead to a short-term uptick in volatility. But as with most political events, government shutdowns have historically had little lasting impact on equity performance,&#8221; said Angelo Kourkafas, an investment strategist at Edward Jones.
Recent years have witnessed recurring government shutdowns, though they have been relatively short-lived. Since 1976, the U.S. has experienced 20 such shutdowns lasting at least a day. The most prolonged shutdown, occurring in December 2018, lasted for 35 days, setting a historical record.
The following table shows how the markets have reacted to the previous shutdowns. According to this data, the stocks were positive half the time during the government closures and were higher in most cases three and six months later.

Why It Matters: The impact of a shutdown could be different on various kinds of government functions. It differs from a debt-limit default in that it doesn&#8217;t hinder the government&#8217;s capacity to meet its debt obligations to bondholders, meaning it doesn&#8217;t directly influence borrowing costs or credit ratings.
While Treasury interest payments and Social Security benefits continue as usual, millions of federal workers go without pay during the shutdown. Although this situation affects households, furloughed employees will receive backpay once Congress restores funding.
What&#8217;s Happening With The Bill? After scrapping the bipartisan proposal, Trump urged House Speaker Mike Johnson and Republican lawmakers to renegotiate, just days before federal funding was set to expire.
Speaker Johnson has to now come up with an alternative plan to prevent the government from closing ahead of Friday's deadline.
In a statement, Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance urged Republicans to "get smart and tough."
Trump's proposal, which was seen as highly ambitious, called for continued government funding alongside a contentious provision to raise the national debt ceiling—something that typically faces strong opposition from his own party. "Anything else is a betrayal of our country," they declared.
Department of Government Efficiency co-lead Elon Musk, on the other hand, also supported the Republicans in turning down the bill.
