Survey Says Global Adoption Of Smart Beta ETFs Reaches New High

AbbVie (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ABBV#NYSE">ABBV</a>) reported quarterly earnings of $2.16 per share which beat the analyst consensus estimate of $2.11 by 2.37 percent. This is a 22.58 percent decrease over earnings of $2.79 per share from the same period last year. The company reported quarterly sales of $15.102 billion which beat the analyst consensus estimate of $14.827 billion by 1.85 percent. This is a 5.60 percent increase over sales of $14.301 billion the same period last year.

The division reported 2.9 trillion Korean won in operating profit (versus a loss of (2.2) trillion Korean won Y/Y).
Samsung Display Corp Division, posted 8.1 trillion Korean won in revenue (versus 9.7 trillion Korean won Y/Y). The division reported 0.9 trillion Korean won in operating profit (versus 2.0 trillion Korean won Y/Y) due to sluggish smartphone demand and rising competition for the mobile display business.
The Mobile eXperience (MX) and Networks businesses posted 25.8 trillion Korean won in revenue (versus 25.0 Korean won Y/Y). The division reported 2.1 trillion Korean won in operating profit (versus 2.7 trillion Korean won Y/Y).
The quarterly capex was 17.8 trillion Korean won, with 16 trillion Korean won allocated to the DS Division and 1 trillion Korean won to SDC.
While overall earnings improvement may be limited in the first quarter of 2025 due to weakness in the semiconductors business, the company aims to pursue growth through increased sales of smartphones with differentiated AI experiences and premium products in the Device eXperience (DX) Division.
For 2025, the company plans to enhance technological and product advantages in AI, meet future demand for high-value-added products, and drive sales growth in premium segments.
Samsung, in a preliminary earnings report, flagged sluggish demand for conventional chips used in personal computers and mobile phones weighed on its memory business, with earnings also dented by rising R&amp;D costs and early investments in expanding advanced-chip processing capability, the Wall Street Journal <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/business/earnings/samsungs-net-profit-beats-consensus-but-chip-woes-weigh-cad40447?mod=tech_lead_pos1" rel="noreferrer noopener">reports</a>.
SK Hynix has left Samsung behind in HBM, Eric Ross of Cascend Securities, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/01/31/samsung-fourth-quarter-profit-falls-short-of-estimates-as-ai-demand-remains-strong.html" rel="noreferrer noopener">told</a> CNBC. Micron Technology, Inc also gained ground, Ross told. PC and smartphone DRAM markets are under price pressure, he added.
Nabila Popal of IDC told CNBC that Samsung&#8217;s share of the premium market has inched closer to market leader Apple Inc thanks to the former&#8217;s Galaxy S24 series featuring Galaxy AI.

Atlassian shares are trading higher after the company reported better-than-expected Q2 financial results.

Shares of Apple Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) rose by 4.02% in premarket on Friday following better-than-expected first-quarter revenue and earnings per share. CEO Tim Cook described Q1 as their &#8220;best quarter ever&#8221;. However, iPhone and China sales fell below expectations for the given quarter.
What Happened: Apple stock closed 0.74% lower on Thursday after which the company reported its first-quarter earnings.
While its revenue reached $124.3 billion as compared to the $124.13 billion <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/AAPL/earnings">expected</a> by <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/dashboard">Benzinga Pro</a>, the adjusted EPS also surpassed expectations at $2.40 as compared to the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/AAPL/earnings">estimates</a> of $2.36 per share.
However, the iPhone sales slipped to $69.14 billion, versus $69.7 billion in the same quarter last year.
With a good Q1, the company beat eight consecutive quarters of expectations, according to <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/dashboard">Benzinga Pro</a>.
The iPhone maker&#8217;s success was fueled by growth in its services sector and strong performance in international markets. Services revenue, which includes offerings like Apple Music and iCloud, climbed to $26.34 billion, up significantly from $23.12 billion last year.

Geographically, Apple saw robust sales across various regions. The Americas contributed $52.65 billion, while Europe generated $33.86 billion. Japan brought in $8.99 billion, and the rest of the Asia-Pacific region contributed $10.29 billion. Greater China sales were at $18.51 billion, but Wall Street expected $21.5 billion from China.
Product revenue totaled $97.96 billion, a slight increase from $96.46 billion the previous year. Mac sales rose to $8.99 billion from $7.78 billion, and iPad sales also increased to $8.09 billion from $7.02 billion. Sales of Wearables, Home and Accessories, however, saw a slight decline, reaching $11.75 billion compared to $11.95 billion last year.

Why It Matters: Despite fluctuations in specific product categories, Apple highlighted a significant milestone. Its active installed base of devices reached an all-time high across all product lines and geographic segments.
&#8220;Today Apple is reporting our best quarter ever, with revenue of $124.3 billion, up 4% from a year ago," said Cook, Apple's CEO. Cook also emphasized the company's focus on innovation, stating, "Through the power of Apple silicon, we're unlocking new possibilities for our users with Apple Intelligence, which makes apps and experiences even better and more personal. And we're excited that Apple Intelligence will be available in even more languages this April."
Price Action: Shares rose over 4% to $247.14, during the publication of this article, whereas the exchange-traded fund tracking Nasdaq 100, Invesco QQQ Trust, Series 1 (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) rose 0.85% to $527.50.
Apple has gained 28.84% over the last year and 6.98% in the last six months.
The average price target among 30 analysts <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/AAPL/analyst-ratings">tracked by Benzinga</a> is $246.79 with a &#8216;buy&#8217; rating. The estimates range from $188 to $325 apiece. Recent ratings from Morgan Stanley, Evercore ISI Group, and BofA Securities suggest a $266.67 target, implying a potential upside of 8.45%.

A new survey published by FTSE Russell, one of the largest providers of indexes for use by issuers of exchange traded funds, indicates adoption of smart beta ETFs, those funds using weighting schemes beyond market capitalization, is reaching new heights.

The index provider&#39;s sixth annual survey of global institutional investors&#39; attitudes toward smart beta, or alternatively-weighted ETFs indicates adoption rates of these strategies reached 58 percent earlier this year, up 10 percent from 2018.

<h3>What Happened</h3>

&quot;Notably, in 2019 nearly eight in 10 (78%) asset owners have implemented, are evaluating or plan to evaluate a smart beta index-based strategy,&rdquo; <a href="https://www.ftserussell.com/">said FTSE Russell</a>. &ldquo;In addition, adoption rates increased in Europe, North America and the Asia Pacific region, with growth also recorded in all AUM tiers: less than $1 billion, between $1-10 billion and more than $10 billion.&rdquo;

Among the factors contributing to institutional investors&#39; adoption of smart beta ETFs are risk reduction, the potential for higher returns and the ability to bolster portfolio diversification. FTSE Russell also notes multi-factor funds are expected to be drivers of smart beta growth going forward.

ETFs tracking FTSE Russell multi-factor indexes include the Invesco Russell 2000 Dynamic Multifactor ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/OMFS#NYSE">OMFS</a>) and the Invesco Russell 1000 Dynamic Multifactor ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="/stock/OMFL#NYSE">OMFL</a>).

<h3>Why It&#39;s Important</h3>

Data from FTSE Russell also confirm institutional investors continue warming to environmental, social and governance (ESG) investment strategies. While the <a href="nvesco Russell 1000 Dynamic Multifactor ETF">universe of related ETFs</a> is growing in the U.S., investors&#39; enthusiasm for such products is more pronounced in Europe.

&ldquo;Among European asset owners evaluating or using smart beta, those expecting to apply ESG considerations to a smart beta strategy increased from 55% in 2018 to 77% in 2019,&rdquo; said FTSE Russell. &ldquo;Adoption of ESG considerations into smart beta strategies remained flat in North America, with lack of stakeholder demand cited by respondents as the main reason for lack of growth in this area.&rdquo;

Among U.S.-listed ESG ETFs, FTSE Russell <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/18/09/12385655/vanguard-enters-esg-arena-with-two-etfs">provides indexes for the</a> Vanguard ESG U.S. Stock ETF (CBOE:ESGV) and Vanguard ESG International Stock ETF (CBOE:VSGX), among others. Those Vanguard products, which debuted last September, have almost $680 million in combined assets under management.

<h3>What&#39;s Next</h3>

Issuers of smart beta ETFs should be heartened to know the FTSE Russell survey indicates barriers to entry to products are declining among institutional investors.

&ldquo;This suggests that asset owners are becoming more comfortable with smart beta strategies, as many investors have developed an increased understanding of these products and have more confidence in their longer track records,&rdquo; said the index provider. &ldquo;These were cited as the top two reasons many asset owners are re-evaluating smart beta strategies.&rdquo;
