Wall Street faced a downturn on Thursday as traders exercised caution ahead of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell&#8217;s speech at the<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/08/40466528/jackson-hole-preview-5-important-questions-ahead-of-jerome-powells-fed-speech"> Jackson Hole Symposium on Friday.</a>
Powell is anticipated to signal a potential rate cut in September, but market sentiment currently favors a smaller 25-basis-point reduction rather than a more substantial 50-basis-point cut.
On Thursday, economic data indicated that U.S. private sector activity surpassed expectations in August, according to the S&amp;P Global flash Purchasing Managers&#8217; Index (PMI). The growth was primarily driven by the services sector, which more than compensated for <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/08/40509090/august-services-growth-exceeds-expectations-as-manufacturing-slumps-inflation-gradually-eases-to-nor">the faster contraction in manufacturing.</a>
Major U.S. equity indices traded lower throughout the session, while the dollar and Treasury yields rebounded after four consecutive days of losses. 
The U.S. dollar rose nearly 0.4% against a basket of major currencies, and the yield on the 10-year Treasury note climbed six basis points. As a result, bonds fell, with the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) dropping 1.2%.
The energy sector emerged as the day&#8217;s top performer, buoyed by a more than 2% surge in oil prices. In contrast, natural gas plunged over 6% due to higher-than-expected inventory builds.
Gold also took a hit, declining over 1% and falling below the $2,500 per ounce threshold, weighed down by the strength of the dollar and rising Treasury yields. 
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) fell 1% to $60,000, failing to keep up with the Wednesday&#8217;s bullish momentum, which saw the largest cryptocurrency rise 3.6%.

US Stocks Fall As Dollar, Treasury Yields Rise Ahead Of Fed's Jackson Hole; Oil Rebounds: What's Driving Markets Thursday?

Wall Street trimmed early session gains on Wednesday after official government data downwardly revised nonfarm payrolls by 818,000 from previous estimates between <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/08/40489714/traders-raise-bets-on-aggressive-rate-cuts-as-us-economy-sees-818-000-jobs-revised-away-7-etfs-r">April 2023 and March 2024. </a>This adjustment suggests that the labor market&#8217;s strength was not as robust as investors had initially believed.
By midday trading in New York, major U.S. indices hovered slightly above the flatline, with both the S&amp;P 500 and the Nasdaq 100 adding mild gains after snapping an eight-day winning streak on Tuesday. Blue-chip stocks were flat, while small-cap stocks managed to rise by 0.6%.
Traders are now eagerly awaiting further insights on monetary policy from the minutes of the Federal Reserve Open Market Committee&#8217;s July meeting, scheduled for release at 2:00 p.m. ET.
Meanwhile, speculators have increased their expectations of a 50-basis-point rate cut in September, assigning a 32.5% probability to this scenario in response to the downward revisions of the annual nonfarm payrolls. Market participants are fully pricing in 100 basis points, equivalent to a full percentage point, in cuts by the end of the year.
The U.S. dollar is experiencing its fourth consecutive session of losses, while Treasury yields are dropping on the shorter end of the curve, with the policy-sensitive 2-year note seeing yields tumble by 6 basis points to 3.92%.
Gold is down slightly, off by 0.3%, while oil prices are down 1.2%, with West Texas Intermediate crude projected to close at its lowest levels since early February 2024.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) gained 1% but remains below the $60,000 mark.

The U.S. labor market&#8217;s seemingly gravity-defying growth has been tempered by revisions to employment gains from April <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/08/40487711/us-economy-adds-818-000-fewer-jobs-than-initially-reported-urgency-for-interest-r">2023 to March 2024.</a>
The American economy has seen 818,000 nonfarm payrolls, previously reported in official government statistics, vanish into thin air.
This downward revision reduces the average monthly job gains to around 175,000, down from the originally reported 242,000.
The most significant declines occurred in professional and business services (-358,000 for the year), leisure and hospitality (-150,000), retail trade (-129,000), and manufacturing (-115,000).
On the other hand, there were upward revisions in private education and health services (+87,000) and transportation and warehousing (+56,400).
The immediate takeaway from this data is that the U.S. labor market was not as hot as initially perceived, although job gains have still been solid, amounting to approximately 2.1 million annually through March 2024.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Market Reactions: Dollar Falls As Rate-Cut Bets Increase, While Utilities, Gold Miners Rally</h3>
The downward revision to annual payroll data has heightened expectations for aggressive Fed rate cuts, with speculators increasingly betting on a 50-basis-point cut in September. According to the CME Group Fed Watch tool, the probability of this outcome has risen to 34.5%, up from 29% the previous day.
Traders are now fully pricing in that the federal funds rate will approach 4.25%-4.5% by the end of the year, implying a full percentage point cut from current levels.
This shift in interest rate expectations triggered a negative reaction in the U.S. dollar, with the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>) erasing earlier gains.
In contrast, gold prices reacted positively following the release, although the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>) remained in negative territory at 11:20 a.m. ET, down 0.2%.
Growth-sensitive commodities like oil declined, with the United States Oil Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/USO#NYSE">USO</a>) falling more than 1% after the data release, and down 0.3% for the day.
While the S&amp;P 500 remained largely unchanged, notable sector movements emerged. The Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLF#NYSE">XLF</a>) dropped sharply following the data release, while the Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLB#NYSE">XLB</a>) and Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLU#NYSE">XLU</a>) saw gains.
Within industries, gold miners experienced a turnaround, with the VanEck Gold Miners ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GDX#NYSE">GDX</a>) flipping from session losses to gains.

In commodities, oil is up 0.7%, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) light crude poised for its third consecutive session of gains.

Stocks Rebound As US Economy Flexes Muscles, Small Caps Rally, Gold Falls: What's Driving Markets Thursday?

In the second quarter, the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) saw a robust real growth of 2.8%, accelerating from the previous quarter&#8217;s 1.4% growth and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/07/39957034/us-economy-expands-2-8-in-q2-tops-estimates-weekly-jobless-claim-fall">surpassing the 2% estimates.</a>
Inflation pressures, measured by the Personal Consumption Expenditure (PCE) price index, eased from 3.4% to 2.6%, indicating progress towards the Federal Reserve&#8217;s 2% target. Core PCE inflation, excluding food and energy items, also fell from 3.7% to 2.9%, though it slightly missed the expected drop to 2.7%.
&#8220;The US economy is much stronger than people realize. Those concerned about a growth slowdown should feel reassured by this morning's GDP number,&#8221; said Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer for Independent Advisor Alliance.
Despite the strong economic performance, market expectations for upcoming Federal Reserve rate cuts remain unchanged, with the probability of a September rate cut holding steady at 100%.
Following the GDP report, U.S. equity futures turned positive, reflecting a resurgence in risk sentiment after days of significant volatility. At 09:00 a.m. ET, contracts on the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 rose 0.2%, while those on the S&amp;P 500 and the Dow each increased by 0.1%.

Surprise Q2 GDP Growth, Inflation Eases — 'Economy Is Much Stronger Than People Realize': 7 ETFs On The Move

On CNBC's &#8220;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/video/2024/07/24/final-trades-lockheed-martin-te-connectivity-u-s-2-year-treasuries-and-the-xlu.html">Halftime Report Final Trades</a>,&#8221; Jason Snipe of Odyssey Capital Advisors said he likes Lockheed Martin Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LMT#NYSE">LMT</a>), which reported a nice beat on the top and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/07/39941283/lockheed-martin-shares-climb-on-positive-analyst-ratings-and-strong-q2-results">bottom lines this week</a>.
On July 23, the aerospace and defense giant reported earnings per share (EPS) of $7.11 for the second quarter 2024, surpassing analysts' expectations of $6.46. 
Additionally, revenue for the quarter reached $18.122 billion, exceeding the anticipated $17.044 billion. Lockheed Martin expects FY24 net sales of $70.50 billion-$71.5 billion (prior $68.5 billion–$70 billion) versus the consensus of $69.822 billion. LMT sees EPS of $26.10-$26.60 (prior $25.65 – $26.35) versus the consensus of $26.29.

Lockheed Martin, TE Connectivity And More: CNBC's 'Final Trades'

Wall Street experienced a turbulent session on Wednesday, with the S&amp;P 500 index heading toward its worst performance in over a year and the tech-focused Nasdaq 100 eyeing its fifth decline in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">the last six sessions.</a>
The Magnificent Seven group — Microsoft Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NYSE">MSFT</a>), Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>), NVIDIA Corp., Alphabet Inc., Amazon Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>), Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>) and Tesla, Inc. — wiped out over $570 billion in their combined market valuation by midday trading in New York. The Roundhill Magnificent Seven ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MAGS#NYSE">MAGS</a>) fell 4.9%, marking the worst daily performance since the fund&#8217;s inception last year.
Tesla shares plummeted over 11% after missing earnings expectations, with revenue dropping 7% year-over-year to $19.9 billion. This marks its second consecutive quarter of year-over-year sales declines and the first sequential decline in quarterly sales volume.
Despite posting stronger-than-expected numbers, Alphabet also saw a significant drop, falling 5%, weighed down by its YouTube advertising revenue, which failed to meet analyst expectations.
The Nasdaq 100 fell 3%, eyeing a similar decline to the one witnessed a week ago. The drop in tech companies also impacted the chipmaker industry, which heavily depends on AI-related investments from mega-cap tech giants. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXX#NYSE">SOXX</a>) fell 3.3%, approaching its lowest close since early June.
The CBOE Volatility Index or VIX, commonly referred to as the market fear index, rallied 16% to 17 points.
On the macro front, flash PMI surveys revealed the strongest pace of growth for the services sector in 28 months, while manufacturing activity <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/07/39934981/us-services-activity-hits-28-month-peak-price-pressures-continue-to-ease-economist-">returned to contraction in July.</a>
Treasury yields fell, sending a trade-weighted U.S. dollar gauge down 0.3%. Notably, the dollar fell 1.4% against the Japanese yen, eyeing levels last seen in early May. 
Gold showed its resilience against market turbulence, rising 0.6%. Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) rose 0.4%.

Wall Street continues to experience a series of memorable days, with the bulls riding the rally with increasing confidence, certain that the Federal Reserve will begin cutting <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/interest-rates">interest rates in September.</a>
Fed futures currently indicate a 100% probability that policymakers will cut interest rates in two months, according to the CME Group&#8216;s FedWatch tool.
This time, blue-chip stocks and gold are stealing the spotlight by breaking their all-time highs, while small caps, as tracked by the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>), have posted their fifth consecutive day in the green, marking their best five-day rally <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/07/39797464/small-caps-are-having-a-moment-russell-2000-notches-best-5-day-rally-in-over-4-year">in over four years.</a>
The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged to 40,800 points at 12:30 p.m. ET, up 1.5%, marking its best session since late May. Sector-wise, industrials rose 2.1%, eyeing the strongest one-day gain since October.
The S&amp;P 500 increased marginally by 0.3%, while tech stocks in the Nasdaq 100 slipped by 0.4%, as the rotation from large-cap tech to small-cap and cyclical laggards continues.
Gold, as tracked by the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>), rose 1.6% to $2,460 per ounce, as Treasury yields sharply fell following Powell&#8217;s dovish remarks on Monday and a stagnation in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/bonds/24/07/39792320/june-retail-sales-stagnate-traders-fully-price-in-september-interest-rate-cut">retail sales growth in June.</a> The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) rallied 1.1%. 
Oil prices dropped to $80 a barrel, down 1%, heading for the lowest close in nearly a month.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) fell by 0.5%, on track to snap a four-day losing streak.

Launched on 05/08/2007, the First Trust Utilities AlphaDEX ETF (ARCA:FXU) is a passively managed exchange traded fund designed to provide a broad exposure to the Utilities - Broad segment of the equity market.
Passively managed ETFs are becoming increasingly popular with institutional as well as retail investors due to their low cost, transparency, flexibility and tax efficiency. They are excellent vehicles for long term investors.
Additionally, sector ETFs offer convenient ways to gain low risk and diversified exposure to a broad group of companies in particular sectors. Utilities - Broad is one of the 16 broad Zacks sectors within the Zacks Industry classification. It is currently ranked 3, placing it in top 19%.
Index Details
The fund is sponsored by First Trust Advisors. It has amassed assets over $256.06 million, making it one of the average sized ETFs attempting to match the performance of the Utilities - Broad segment of the equity market. FXU seeks to match the performance of the StrataQuant Utilities Index before fees and expenses.
The StrataQuant Utilities Index is a modified equal-dollar weighted index designed by the AMEX to objectively identify and select stocks from the Russell 1000 Index that may generate positive alpha relative to traditional passive style indices through the use of the AlphaDEX screening methodology.
Costs
Investors should also pay attention to an ETF&#39;s expense ratio. Lower cost products will produce better results than those with a higher cost, assuming all other metrics remain the same.
Annual operating expenses for this ETF are 0.64%, making it one of the most expensive products in the space.
It has a 12-month trailing dividend yield of 2.65%.
Sector Exposure and Top Holdings
Even though ETFs offer diversified exposure that minimizes single stock risk, investors should also look at the actual holdings inside the fund. Luckily, most ETFs are very transparent products that disclose their holdings on a daily basis.
This ETF has heaviest allocation in the Utilities sector--about 96.50% of the portfolio.
Looking at individual holdings, Vistra Corp. The top 10 holdings account for about 40.31% of total assets under management.
Performance and Risk
The ETF return is roughly 9.28% so far this year and is up about 7.99% in the last one year (as of 07/15/2024). In that past 52-week period, it has traded between $27.35 and $35.11.
The ETF has a beta of 0.67 and standard deviation of 17.52% for the trailing three-year period, making it a medium risk choice in the space. With about 41 holdings, it has more concentrated exposure than peers.
Alternatives
First Trust Utilities AlphaDEX ETF sports a Zacks ETF Rank of 4 (Sell), which is based on expected asset class return, expense ratio, and momentum, among other factors. FXU, then, is not the best option for investors seeking exposure to the Utilities/Infrastructure ETFs segment of the market. However, there are better ETFs in the space to consider.
Vanguard Utilities ETF (ARCA:VPU) tracks MSCI US Investable Market Utilities 25/50 Index and the Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF (ARCA:XLU) tracks Utilities Select Sector Index. Vanguard Utilities ETF has $5.74 billion in assets, Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF has $14.63 billion. VPU has an expense ratio of 0.10% and XLU charges 0.09%.

<li>Incyte Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/INCY#NASDAQ">INCY</a>) and Vestis Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VSTS#NYSE">VSTS</a>) saw their shares rise by over 4.5% and 7%, respectively, following the announcement of their earnings report dates on July 30 and Aug. 7.</li>
<li>Albemarle Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ALB#NYSE">ALB</a>) fell 6.7%, on track to achieve lows last seen in October 2020, as lithium prices continue to ease. </li>
