What Happened: The acquisition, which is expected to be finalized by the end of 2024, will see the AIG business integrated with Zurich&#8217;s travel insurance provider, Cover-More Group, expanding Zurich&#8217;s presence in the U.S., the company <a href="https://www.zurich.com/media/news-releases/2024/2024-0626-01">said</a> in a press release on Wednesday.

Zurich Insurance Announces $600M Acquisition Of AIG's Global Personal Travel Insurance Business To Bolster US Presence

At least three people are reported to have died on Tuesday, Feb. 6 as a result of the floods and mudslides that <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/california">swept across Southern California</a>.
Unprecedented levels of rainfall caused low-elevation sections of the Los Angeles area to flood, leaving destruction along its path of water and mud.
The region is becoming increasingly problematic for residents, as insurers flee the state — which is also highly prone to wildfires — causing the price of home and auto insurance to shoot up.
38 million people have been placed under flood alert, as heavy rains are expected to continue through Tuesday and the soil is oversaturated from the storm that began Sunday.
By Monday afternoon nearly 440,000 homes were left without electricity with some areas around LA reaching up to 11 inches of water.
The fire department responded to at least 130 flood incidents between Sunday and Monday, <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2024-02-05/stunning-rain-mudslides-flooding-thrash-southern-california-dangerous-storm-isnt-done">according</a> to the LA Times, with Governor Gavin Newsom declaring a state of emergency.
Daniel Swain, a climate scientist with UCLA, called the storm "remarkable and in some ways historic," as unseen levels of rainfall hit specific areas consistently.
With homes and vehicles around the area sustaining damage to diverse degrees, insurers covering the area will likely be hit with massive bills to cover.
The weather event, however, didn't cause a major disturbance to insurance stock prices as of Tuesday. Progressive Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PGR#NYSE">PGR</a>) was down 0.7% on Tuesday. Erie Indemnity Co (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ERIE#NASDAQ">ERIE</a>) was up 0.8%. Fidelity National Financial Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FNF#NYSE">FNF</a>) is up 0.1%.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Causes And Consequences Of The California Insurance Exodus</h3>
The increasingly alarming rate of disastrous events in the Golden State has already become an exit alarm for some players in the California insurance market.
Allstate Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ALL#NYSE">ALL</a>), one of the largest insurance companies in the country, decided last June to stop offering new policies in the state, which has also been <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/23/09/34211910/home-insurance-shockwave-climate-risks-trigger-coverage-cuts-as-claims-surge-report">battered by wildfires during recent years</a>.
"The cost to insure new home customers in California is far higher than the price they would pay for policies due to wildfires, higher costs for repairing homes and higher reinsurance premiums," said Allstar in a statement at the time.
The move followed that of competitor State Farm General Insurance Company, which stopped accepting new insurance applications in the Golden State in May.
In August last year Kemper Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KMPR#NYSE">KMPR</a>) also decided to swiftly reduce its presence in the California market. The company, owning subsidiaries Merastar Insurance, Unitrin Auto and Home Insurance, Unitrin Direct Property and Casualty, as well as Kemper Independence Insurance decided to not renew existing preferred policies in home and auto insurance across the country.
The decision was expressed by CEO and Chairman Joseph P. Lacher, Jr as "the most effective and efficient way to support our stakeholders" and a way to "release capital and increase the resources available to support our core specialty auto and life businesses," in a move that was allegedly not motivated by climate reasons.
A similar trend has existed in disaster-prone Florida, where the Farmers Insurance Group, a wholly owned subsidiary of Zurich Insurance Group AG (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ZURVY#OTC">ZURVY</a>), announced its exit from the state in August 2023. Close after, the company also decided to withdraw from all insurance programs offered in California, including home, auto and renters policies.
The rising risk for California real estate is causing the cost of home insurance to rise at higher rates than <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/inflation">inflation</a>. <a href="https://money.com/home-insurance-rates-predictions-2024/">According</a> to Money.com, State Farm was recently approved a 20% increase for renewals, which will be effective in March of this year. Allstate requested a 39.6% rate increase, which is currently under review by the California Department of Insurance.
Some residents of high-risk areas have been forced to last-resort options, including more expensive plans designed for customers who've been rejected by other insurers, <a href="https://www.policygenius.com/homeowners-insurance/news/homeowners-in-california-see-rate-increases-ahead-of-peak-wildfire-months/">reported</a> to PolicyGenius.
Insurance ETFs were generally unaffected by news of the floods.

The SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA: SPY) increased by 5.56% in November, recording two subsequent monthly increases for the first time in 2022. The Fidelity NASDAQ Composite Index ETF (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/oneq#NASDAQ">ONEQ</a>) and the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJA) ETF (NYSEARCA: DIA) mirrored this upward trend, showing monthly increases in October of 4.43% and 5.72%, respectively.&nbsp;
On November 2nd, the Federal Reserve hiked its key interest rate by 75 basis points, a figure congruent with expectations. The market dropped 2.51% on the day the news was released but closed roughly 6% higher than the day&rsquo;s close at the end of the month. While the Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has not yet decreed a slow-down in interest rate hikes, Powell said a rate-hike slowdown is possible in December. The comment, issued on Nov. 30, caused the SPDR S&amp;P500 ETF Trust to rise by 3.15%.&nbsp;

The latter was followed by a second wave of downward movement that stretched over months.
As ambiguity simmers surrounding market sentiment, OTC Markets Group Inc.&rsquo;s (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/otcm#OTCQX">OTCM</a>) regulated markets experienced a slight decrease in total monthly volume, recording $37.3 billion in July compared to $45.2 billion in June.
Despite the decrease, a number of new securities have emerged onto the OTCQX Best Market and OTCQB Venture Market, possibly demonstrating the ability to attract interest in a wide range of industries. Both the OTCQX Best Market and the OTCQB Venture Market maintained a significant international presence, with over half of the top most-traded securities across both markets composed of international operators.

The OTCQX Best Market recorded $7 billion in trading volume in July, a decrease from June&rsquo;s $9 billion.

Additionally, OTCQX&rsquo;s top 10 most-active securities experienced a slight reshuffle in July, welcoming BASF SE (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/basfy#OTCQX">BASFY</a>) and Zurich Insurance Group Inc. (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/stek#OTCQB">STEK</a>) and mining operator Brazil Minerals Inc. Similar to June, the OTCQB Venture Market witnessed a number of novelties in July. In addition to three new companies, all three of the most-traded securities in the market changed. June&rsquo;s OTCQB Most Active leaders Freddie Mac (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fmcc#OTCQB">FMCC</a>) and Lake Resources (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/llkkf#OTCQB">LLKKF</a>) made way for biotech operator CytoDyn Inc. The month of July saw $37.3 billion in trading volume for stocks that trade on the OTCQK and OTCQB. While some of the stocks that trade over-the-counter are considered&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/best-penny-stocks">penny stocks</a> based on their share price, they are also some of the largest companies in the world and represent a diverse list of sectors.
The total in July was down from $45.2 million in June, as <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/22/07/27971151/these-were-the-most-traded-otc-stocks-in-june-where-do-danone-adidas-and-grayscale-bitcoin">reported </a>by Benzinga.

These 2 Under-The-Radar Stocks Traded More Than $1B Each Last Month

Cannabis, veterans, PTSD and corporate America: Quite the mix, eh?
When I left the United States Army as a combat veteran (a.k.a. a grunt), working in corporate America seemed to be nothing but a fantasy. Society deemed me &ldquo;unqualified&rdquo; because, at age 23, all I had in my hands was my DD214 (a Proof of Service document), my high school diploma, and a PTSD diagnosis that, according to the VA was supposed to cripple me socially and psychologically.
Now imagine honorably fighting through 14 consecutive months of intense combat. Add three&nbsp;years of active duty service, only to return home and be told you don&rsquo;t qualify for any white-collar job.
Having always dreamt of working for a Fortune 500 company, the news broke my heart.
<h3>&lsquo;Be All That You Can Be&rsquo;</h3>
The Army often tells soldiers we &ldquo;can be all that we can be in the Army.&rdquo;
But, what about after the Army?
All I wanted to be when I came home was a professional. I wanted to serve in a profession of my choosing. And I thought that I would at least have the opportunity to prove my worth. This wasn&rsquo;t the case at first.
Fortunately, in November 2007, I got an opportunity to prove my worth to American International Group Inc (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/aig#NYSE">AIG</a>) as a bi-lingual property and casualty agent. I essentially begged for the position because I had no corporate experience, nor did I have the college degrees they required. But, what I did have was a surgical list of professional attributes that I acquired in my&nbsp;years of military service, which, if applied in a corporate environment, could provide endless possibility.
My promise to them was that I would one day be their top salesman&hellip;
Well as fate would have it, from November of 2007 to February 2017, I stood amongst the top 1 percent of direct insurance agents for AIG, AIG Direct, 21st Century Auto Insurance, and Zurich Insurance Group AG (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/zurvy#OTC">ZURVY</a>)&rsquo;s Farmers Insurance. I made both corporations millions of dollars over those 10 years, with honest and true grit to get to the top and maintain positioning with all required metrics at the max level.
60 to 70 hours a week. No shortcuts.
Instead, I was using the tools I acquired in the battlefield, and applying them to a business and corporate mindset.
<h3>Veterans And Suicide</h3>
We lose over 8,000 veterans a year to suicide. This is why it is imperative to provide them with gainful and meaningful employment upon transitioning.
Had I followed my &ldquo;transitioning plan,&rdquo; set forth for me upon exit based on my military occupational specialty as an artilleryman, I would have only been suited for blowing up mountains to create new roadways out west. The&nbsp;suggestion that working that job was my best option upon coming home motivated me even more to strive professionally and internally, to accept that I suffer from PTSD, but also to understand that PTSD doesn&#39;t have me.
From the outside, people could easily assume I am just a normal guy with no noticeably physical wounds. I&rsquo;m actually successful, and almost always have a smile on my face.
But that is the thing: PTSD it is an invisible wound; a wound from psychological warfare.
<blockquote>When veterans come home from combat it is critically important to note that what happens on the battlefield comes home with us, which is why taking our triumphs from the battlefield to the boardroom is so important to us.
</blockquote>
I suffered in silence as I had to internalize the triggers throughout the day. I had to justify why I was so tired by explaining I did not sleep well, but I left out the part about it being because of the medications that the VA prescribed, and the many side effects they had. I was essentially a zombie, numb.
The sad part is that I knew (as we all should know) that cannabis, that holistic medicine that had been here for us from the beginning of time, was the best thing for me. The problem was, if I tested positive for cannabis, I would lose my insurance career; if&nbsp;I got caught using it, I could go to jail and then ruin my record and all that I had worked for.
<h3>To Be Or Not To Be</h3>
I was faced with a choice to stay on the medications that were driving me insane; go unmedicated (clearly a dead end); or use cannabis and risk losing it all.
This is what has lead me to write this article.
<blockquote>I wrote this article to express the need for corporations to rethink their veteran hiring practices and policies, to better understand the needs of veterans.
</blockquote>
This article seeks to teach employers that the veterans that they are hiring should not be looked at as &ldquo;disabled,&rdquo; but rather as &ldquo;enabled.&rdquo;
It is important to note that my day-to-day cannabis use was crucial in the late stages of my career because it allowed me to function and think clearly, to be the best employee that I could be. But what wasn&rsquo;t okay&nbsp;was feeling like a criminal in the process; all because I aspired to cleanse my body of the man-made chemicals in the form of the medications prescribed to me that were making me more likely to follow through with suicide.
Creating stable and meaningful employment when veterans finish service is imperative for a successful transition. I urge corporations to re-think their policies for hiring veterans. I believe if they operate in states where there is medical marijuana legally available, they should immediately amend their drug policy.
I firmly believe that if these changes are implemented, we will see a rise in morale and production, ultimately benefitting bottom lines. It is a win-win for everyone involved: the employer, the veteran, and the community they impact.

Trading volume appears to be moving back to OTC Markets&nbsp; following <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/penny-stocks/22/03/26137786/the-otcqxs-top-10-experience-a-shuffle-in-february">a slight slump</a> in February.
A look at March&rsquo;s&nbsp; volumes across the markets operated by OTC Markets Group Inc. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/otcm#OTCQX">OTCM</a>) shows a total monthly total dollar volume of $57.4 billion, up from $44 billion in February.
This rise in volume comes alongside a slight relaxation in the bear runs that encompassed January and February across a variety of markets. The SPDR S&amp;P 500 Exchange Traded Fund (NYSE Arca: SPY), for example, experienced its first monthly increase in 2022, rising 3.44% in March. The SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (NYSE Arca: DIA) and the Fidelity Nasdaq Composite Index ETF (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/oneq#NASDAQ">ONEQ</a>) experienced similar rises, increasing 2.21% and 3.5%, respectively, in March.
As the market provides a slight psychological breather following <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/kristinmckenna/2022/03/14/its-been-one-of-the-top-5-worst-starts-to-a-year-for-stocks-and-bonds/?sh=37e61c8c6fca">one of the worst starts</a> in history for stocks, the OTCQX and OTCQB&rsquo;s 10 most-active securities may provide traders and investors with yet another talking point for March&rsquo;s movements.
<h3>The OTCQX Best Market: Volume Spikes And Reshuffling</h3>
The OTCQX Best Market recorded a total of $12.4 billion in trading volume in March.&nbsp;
Volume spikes across a variety of securities were likely pivotal in this increase over February&rsquo;s volume figure. Eight of the OTCQX&rsquo;s top 30 most-active securities experienced volume changes over 100% compared to February.
Notably, BNP Paribas S.A.&rsquo;s (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/bnpqy#OTCQX">BNPQY</a>) volume jumped 225%; Adidas AG&rsquo;s (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/addyy#OTCQX">ADDYY</a>),141%; Danone SA&rsquo;s (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/danoy#OTCQX">DANOY</a>), 267%; and Zurich Insurance Group AG Ltd.&rsquo;s (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/zurvy#OTCQX">ZURVY</a>), 379%;&nbsp;
Meanwhile, the top three securities &mdash; Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gbtc#OTCQX">GBTC</a>), Grayscale Ethereum Trust (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ethe#OTCQX">ETHE</a>) and Roche Holdings AG (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/rhhby#OTCQX">RHHBY</a>) &mdash; retained their spots as first, second, and third-most traded securities on OTCQX. The first two experienced slight reductions in trading volume, while the third experienced an 80% increase compared to March.&nbsp;
International operators, once again, maintain a strong presence on OTCQX. France&rsquo;s Danone, Switzerland&rsquo;s Zurich Insurance Group, and Germany&rsquo;s BASF SE displace February&rsquo;s top 10 most active securities Trulieve Cannabis Corp. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tcnnf#OTCQX">TCNNF</a>), Experian plc (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/expgy#OTCQX">EXPGY</a>), and Tesco PLC (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tscdy#OTCQX">TSCDY</a>), moving them down to the 13th, 16th and 18th&nbsp; spots respectively.&nbsp;&nbsp;
<h3>The OTCQB Venture Market: Sustained International Interest</h3>
The OTCQB Venture Market recorded a total $1.2 billion dollar volume in February, an increase over February&rsquo;s total of $807 million.&nbsp;&nbsp;
The presence of international operators on the OTCQB Best Market was slightly reduced in February, with 13 internationals landing a spot among the top 30 most-traded securities in March, down from 16 in February. Of these 13 securities, eight are Canadian, four are Australian and one is English.&nbsp;
The top 10 most-active securities on the OTCQB experienced a slight reshuffle. American Battery Technology Co. (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/abml#OTCQB">ABML</a>) extends last month&rsquo;s volume increase, rising from fifth place in February to fourth place in March. Lithium producer Lake Resources N.L. (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/llkkf#OTCQB">LLKKF</a>) makes a rise to the top 10 most-active securities, displacing long-runner Freddie Mac (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fmcc#OTCQB">FMCC</a>).&nbsp;

Some of the primary movers in June stayed in their respective places in regard to activity last month. Cannabis made a comeback and Voyager Digital Ltd. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/vygvf#OTCQX">VYGVF</a>) made its debut on the OTCQX.
Over the course of the month, combined total dollar volume on OTC Markets reached just over $50.3 billion. Compared to June&rsquo;s total of $52.5 billion, this was a 4.2% decrease. Additionally, in comparison to June&rsquo;s figures, the total dollar volume for the OTCQX was down 25%, and the OTCQB volume also clocked in a decrease of 34%.
The top three most actively traded securities all experienced lower volume in the month of July. Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gbtc#OTCQX">GBTC</a>) and Grayscale Ethereum Trust (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ethe#OTCQX">ETHE</a>) still remained as the most actively traded names on the top tier of OTC Markets in July, but dollar volume for both continued to be lower month on month compared to June.
Roche Holding Ltd (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/rhhby#OTCQX">RHHBY</a>) &mdash; was the third-most traded security on the OTCQX market in July &mdash; with a total dollar volume that was down from June, but still high at about $900 million.
<h3>Voyager Ventures Forth</h3>
OTC Markets <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/otc-markets-group-welcomes-voyager-digital-ltd-to-otcqx-301328462.html">announced on July 9th</a> that Voyager Digital, a holding company with a market capitalization of over $2 billion whose subsidiaries operate a crypto-asset platform, graduated from the OTCQB to the OTCQX market and immediately rose to the 8th most traded position on the OTCQX with over $181 million in volume.
Zurich Insurance Group Ltd. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/zurvy#OTCQX">ZURVY</a>) a Swiss insurance company, Imperial Brands PLC (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/imbby#OTCQX">IMBBY</a>) a British multinational tobacco company, Bombardier Inc. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/bdrbf#OTCQX">BDRBF</a>) a Canadian business jet manufacturer, and Verano Holdings Corp. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/vrnof#OTCQX">VRNOF</a>) an American cannabis company, were all notable securities, each with over triple-digit increases in volume and placed in the top 30 most actively traded.

In the OTCQB, Netlist, Inc. (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/nlst#OTCQB">NLST</a>)&nbsp;rocketed to the No. 1 position with a total dollar volume of over $601 million after disclosing a solid <a href="https://www.otcmarkets.com/stock/NLST/news/Netlist-Reports-Second-Quarter-2021-Results?id=314465">quarterly earnings report</a>. Netlist provides high-performance SSDs and modular memory subsystems to enterprise customers in diverse industries. The Company&#39;s NVMe&trade; SSD portfolio provides industry-leading performance offered in multiple capacities and form factors. Fannie Mae (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fnma#OTCQB">FNMA</a>) was the No. 2 slot for trading volume in July at $120 million.

Trading volume on OTC Markets remained elevated in July, but activity is slowly moving away from the extreme levels seen in March and April.&nbsp;
Roughly $8.57 billion worth of shares traded on the OTCQX and OTCQB Markets in July, which represents a 9.6% increase from July 2019. However, it was also a 2.8% decrease from June. This falls in-line with the CBOE Volatility Index, which has steadily declined since March (increased trading activity is typically associated with higher volatility).&nbsp;
On the OTCQX Best Market, the top tier of OTC Markets, the most actively traded security in July was the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gbtc#OTCQX">GBTC</a>), which typically falls in behind&nbsp; 
Roche Holding Ltd (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/rhhby#OTCQX">RHHBY</a>). Over $1.4 billion worth of GBTC shares were traded last month.

Beyond those two names, one other theme stood out in July&mdash;the rally in a specific group of cannabis companies.
For several months, a number of U.S.-based cannabis companies have outperformed the rest of the industry. This group includes Curaleaf Holdings Inc. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/curlf#OTCQX">CURLF</a>), Trulieve Cannabis Corporation (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tcnnf#OTCQX">TCNNF</a>), Cresco Labs Inc. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/crlbf#OTCQX">CRLBF</a>), and Planet 13 Holdings Inc. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/plnhf#OTCQX">PLNHF</a>).&nbsp;
Buoyed by the fact that many dispensaries were labeled essential businesses during the pandemic, investors may be anticipating the eventual federal decriminalization of cannabis in the U.S., and are therefore looking to companies with strong operations and reasonable valuations. All four of the companies above trade on OTCQX and have rallied between 250-420% since March.&nbsp;
That rise in share price has also correlated with a rise in dollar volume. In July, dollar volume in shares of those four companies rose an average of 80% from June.&nbsp;

Nextech AR Solutions Corp. These Were The Hottest Companies On OTC Markets In July

The massive rally in stocks around the globe in April and May ended up marking the best <a href="https://lplresearch.com/2020/06/04/best-50-day-rally-ever/">50-day rally for stocks in history</a>.
On the OTC Markets, trading activity in May reflected that rally, as the securities that saw the biggest monthly increases in volume between April and May show how traders were paying closest attention to companies highly exposed to the volatility.
With volatility in the overall market remaining elevated, a number of cannabis securities on the OTCQX Market experienced dramatic volume increases in May. This is consistent with normal markets, as cannabis companies historically tend to trade at a higher beta than the overall market. Complicating matters is the fact that states classified dispensaries as essential businesses&mdash;thereby allowing them to stay open while stay-at-home orders were in place&mdash;though those orders forced many businesses to pivot to an e-commerce model anyway.
Regardless, trading activity on OTC Markets suggests traders were keyed in on the industry. Roughly $57.4 million worth of shares of Charlotte&#39;s Web Holdings Inc. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/cwbhf#OTCQX">CWBHF</a>) traded in May, a 127% increase from April. Likewise, dollar volume in Green Thumb Industries Inc. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gtbif#OTCQX">GTBIF</a>) more than doubled in the month to roughly $66.5 million, while Curaleaf Holdings Inc. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/curlf#OTCQX">CURLF</a>) saw a 77% increase to just under $70 million.
As traders and investors alike bet on the reopening of the global economy, it&rsquo;s no surprise that Air Canada (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/acdvf#OTCQX">ACDVF</a>) experienced a 79% increase in dollar volume. Overall, the largest Canadian airline company was the 13th-most active security on the market in May.
Elsewhere, Brazilian car rental company Localiza Rent A Car SA (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/lzrfy#OTCQX">LZRFY</a>), the largest car rental service in Latin America, also experienced a massive volume increase, with just over $28 million worth of shares traded. Much of that volume came in a four-day span from May 19-22, during which roughly 3.8 million shares traded.
On the OTCQB Venture Market, dollar volume increased 23% in May. To give you an idea of how large a volume increase some of these securities experienced, the average month-over-month increase in dollar volume amongst the OTCQB&rsquo;s 30 most actively traded securities was 659% in May.

Traders Had Cannabis And Transportation Companies On OTC Markets In Focus During May

New York Comptroller Scott Stringer, representing NYC pension funds, has asked Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/brk-a#NYSE">BRK-A</a>) (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/brk-b#NYSE">BRK-B</a>) and two other major insurance companies to <a href="https://comptroller.nyc.gov/newsroom/press-releases/comptroller-stringer-and-pension-fund-trustees-call-on-major-insurance-companies-to-sever-all-ties-with-the-coal-industry/">divest</a> from the coal industry.
<h3>What Happened</h3>
Stringer released a statement last week calling for the need to protect clients from the damage&nbsp;caused by climate change and reminded Berkshire Hathaway, American International Group Inc. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/aig#NYSE">AIG</a>) and Liberty Mutual Fund of their responsibilities toward shareholder value. The comptroller asked these companies to stop underwriting coal projects and divest from the industry.
The NYC comptroller revealed that he had sent letters on behalf of New York City Employees&rsquo; Retirement System, Teachers&#39; Retirement System of the City of New York and New York City Board of Education Retirement System, to executives of the three major insurance companies asking them to take &ldquo;immediate action&rdquo; to end all business ties with the coal industry.&nbsp;

<h3>Why It Matters</h3>
According to Stringer&rsquo;s statement,&nbsp;Berkshire Hathaway, AIG, and Liberty Mutual Insurance held $6.7 billion in coal investments as of 2017, while coal accounts for 40% of global carbon emissions.
Stringer serves as a custodian, a trustee and an investment advisor to the New York City Pension Funds
In his statement, the comptroller alleged that while 19 insurance and reinsurance companies such as Swiss Re, Zurich Insurance Group AG (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/zurvy#OTC">ZURVY</a>), Chubb Ltd (NSYE: CB), and Axis Capital Holdings Limited (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/axs#NYSE">AXS</a>) have committed to some form of divestment from the coal industry, the three offending companies have &ldquo;continued to support the coal industry to various degrees.&rdquo;
A Liberty Mutual Spokesperson told Bloomberg that the company is taking action to reduce its carbon emissions,&nbsp;and environmental sustainability is a &ldquo;key focus.&rdquo;
Berkshire Hathaway is strongly invested in coal with its electric power company PacifiCorp operating a number of power plants and Burlington Northern Railroad involved in the transport of coal.
Last year PacifiCorp had planned to <a href="https://seekingalpha.com/news/3503843-berkshires-pacificorp-closing-of-coal-fired-plants-2038">close</a> most of its coal-fired plants by 2038, with 16 out of 24 plants closing by 2030.&nbsp;
