Celebrity opulence knows no bounds, as evidenced by the sky-high price tags of their homes.

From sprawling French châteaus to modern Malibu mansions, a recent study by The Perfect Rug ranked the most expensive celebrity houses based on the house cost and property size.

The home of tech mogul Bill Gates, the wealthiest person on the list with a net worth of about $130 billion, ranks as the third-most expensive house. The billionaire investor and philanthropist also is the largest private farmland owner in the United States, holding 275,000 acres across the country.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's $225 million house in Correns, France, tops the list. The couple, with a combined net worth of $400 million, purchased the 35-room house on 1,200 acres in 2008.

Oprah Winfrey's Montecito, California, home comes in fourth at $101 million. Purchased in 2001, the 23,000-square-foot property sits on 66 acres. Montecito is a popular locale for luxury real estate, as evidenced by its multiple appearances on the list.

George Lucas's Skywalker Ranch holds the fifth position and the title of the largest property. Initially purchased in 1978, the ranch has expanded to 317,000 square feet on 4,700 acres – more than four times the size of Gates's estate.

George Clooney's Italian Lake Como mansion is sixth in price, sharing the $100 million price tag with Skywalker Ranch. Bought in 2002, the property, featured in "Ocean's Twelve," is a fraction of Clooney's $500 million net worth.

Tom Cruise's Colorado ranch claims ninth place at $59 million. One of the few non-California entries, the ranch spans 320 acres.
