The family of Donald Ray Horton, founder of home-building giant D.R. Horton, is selling their sprawling 500,000-acre ranch in New Mexico for $142 million.

The Great Western Ranch, near Quemado, about 150 miles west of Albuquerque, is larger than Houston, according to The Wall Street Journal. The sale comes just months after Horton's death.

Don't Miss:

The Hortons assembled the ranch over the past decade by purchasing three adjacent properties. They acquired the first 293,000-acre property in 2014 for $59 million. The ranch has about 1,900 cow-calf pairs and 900 cows included in the sale price.

The ranch, near the Navajo Nation and the renowned Acoma Pueblo, offers a wealth of historical and natural wonders. According to listing agent Jeff Buerger of Hall and Hall, it's home to many Native American archaeological sites, including stone dwellings, petroglyphs and pottery shards.

In addition to its rich history, the ranch boasts breathtaking natural beauty, including stunning night skies perfect for stargazing.

"You feel like you're on another planet when you look at the stars," Buerger told The Wall Street Journal.

The Great Western Ranch offers a complete lifestyle. It has eight residences, including a guest lodge and a ranch manager's house. The property is equipped for efficient ranching operations, with wells, barns, corrals and an equipment shop.

For those seeking outdoor adventure, the ranch is also a renowned hunting destination, leased to Black Mountain Outfitters for trophy hunting. According to Jason Saulan, who oversees the Horton family’s ranch portfolio, living on the Great Western Ranch is like stepping into a different world.

"I don't know what the opposite of claustrophobia is, but that's the feeling you get," Saulan told the WSJ, recalling his time living on the property. "We lived up on top of a hill and we could see 28 miles to St. John, Arizona."

Last year, a smaller New Mexico ranch of 16,700 acres sold for $44 million. The Horton family is aiming to set a new record with the sale. While the 500,000-acre property is massive, the title of the largest ranch in the United States belongs to the King Ranch in South Texas, which covers 825,000 acres.

Founded in 1978 by Donald Ray Horton, D.R. Horton has been the nation's largest homebuilder by sales volume since 2002. While the company has built homes for millions across America, its roots run deep in the South.
