The richest man in the world, Elon Musk, is known for his ambitious plans, whether they involve manufacturing electric cars, launching rockets to space, or having large families. According to a recent report by The New York Times, Musk is now quietly setting up a family compound in Austin, Texas, with properties worth around $35 million. According to the Times, his expanding family — which includes his 11 children and two of their three mothers — could be housed in this compound.

Don't Miss:

The Austin property isn't just one mansion. Musk has reportedly bought several homes close together, with the idea that his kids could grow up near each other. He has a vision of having his children and their mothers all living nearby, making it easier for everyone to spend time together.

So far, it seems that Shivon Zilis, one of the mothers and an executive at Musk's brain tech company Neuralink, has moved into one of the homes with her children. However, his other partner, musician Grimes (real name Claire Boucher), isn't living there, as she’s involved in a legal dispute with Musk over their kids.

Musk has frequently expressed his concerns about falling birth rates and his belief that it is everyone’s moral obligation to have more children. The Times mentioned how Musk has even offered his sperm to friends to help boost birth rates. He's deeply concerned about what he calls an impending "population collapse" and has been vocal about the need for women — especially those who are successful or educated — to have more children.

Musk's plan for a big family compound doesn't come without complications. His ex-wife, Justine Musk, with whom he has five older children, isn't directly involved in the Austin setup, and one of his teenage children is reportedly estranged from him. The Times also reported that his partner Grimes has chosen to stay away from the compound amid their ongoing custody battle.

The setup of this family compound is still a work in progress. Musk bought several houses in the Austin area, sometimes offering well above market value to secure the properties, but it's not entirely clear which family members will eventually live there. Some of Musk's oldest children are not close to their father, adding more uncertainty to his plans. For now, it seems like only Zilis and her children have taken up residence.

Neighbors in the area are still trying to make sense of Musk's presence. It is a somewhat strange decision for someone who values privacy as much as Musk because, while being a neighborhood of multimillion-dollar homes, it is not a gated community. Some locals are concerned about how long Musk will stay before coming up with his next big idea because they have witnessed heightened security.

We reported last year that Elon Musk may have had plans for a secret glass house project in Texas. Tesla launched an internal probe into what was called "Project 42," which was intended to develop a large glass building near Tesla’s Texas headquarters.

This building was supposed to be a twisted hexagon-shaped home for Musk. A probe was initiated by worries that Tesla’s resources were being mishandled, particularly following a significant glass purchase that cost millions of dollars, even though Musk has denied building a residence.
