Babe Ruth's $1.6 Million Upper West Side Apartment Is Back on the Market

You can snag a piece of George Herman "Babe" Ruth history. The Upper West Side apartment where Ruth, who's widely considered the Yankee of all time, lived for over a decade has hit the market.

"Babe Ruth slept here! Own a piece of New York City sports history in this expansive three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom co-op once owned by the Yankees' Sultan of Swat," says the Compass listing.

Don't Miss:

The apartment was built in 1915, and the cultural icon moved in in 1929 and stayed through 1940. Ruth lived there with his second wife, Claire Merritt Ruth, and their daughter, Julia Ruth Stevens. At that time, they occupied the entire seventh floor. The New York Post says that it was a 12-room unit. Since then, it's been divided up, including the available 7B unit.

"My fondest memories [of the apartment] are of me and Father listening to ‘The Green Hornet' on the radio and looking out to Riverside Park," Stevens told the New York Post in 2015. "Mom and Dad loved to entertain there. We had a maid and a cook, and Dad would always invite Yankees who had been traded and were in town with other teams. He knew they wanted a home-cooked meal [while on the road]."

Since then, the only available public information is that Ruth's former apartment was sold in 2016 for $1.585 million, and now it's on the market for $1.595 million. The Neo-Renaissance building has red and black brick with limestone trim. It was designed by architects Rouse & Goldstone.

The property starts off strong with a semi-private landing, meaning you get right off an elevator into the foyer. It moves into a dining area, and the three bedrooms are spread out nicely. There's a large corner living room and spacious kitchen. Two bathrooms and one powder room finish off the co-op.

"Today, this pet-friendly cooperative offers part-time doorman service, a live-in superintendent, laundry and a community room with a lending library and ping pong table," the listing reads.

To commemorate The Bambino's former home, the building features a plaque that reads, "'The Sultan of Swat' led the New York Yankees to seven pennants between 1920 and 1934. Ruth hit 714 career home runs, a record until 1974. He lived here for several years, beginning in 1929, and then moved to 173 Riverside Drive."
