Live Like Lady Day–Former NYC Townhome Of Jazz Icon Billie Holiday Sells For $10.5 Million

Jazz legend Billie Holiday's final residence in New York's upper-west side was a posh townhome befitting a bona fide superstar, and the property still holds strong appeal. It was recently sold to a private buyer for $10.5 million. A profile of the property in Architectural Digest makes it clear that Holiday, popularly known as "Lady Day," had musical talents that equaled her sophistication and eye for a good real estate investment.

The city's Upper West Side is world-renowned as the epitome of big-city luxury living, a tradition best exemplified by the neighborhood's opulent townhomes and penthouses. The rich and famous have made this neighborhood one of their preferred landing spots for decades. Celebrities noshing at one of the area's upscale restaurants or walking dogs is a common sight here, and this proximity to celebrities remains one of the neighborhood's main attractions.

Don't Miss:

The presence of stars like Holiday in the 1940s and 50s helped to spark that trend. Her former home, at (insert), is in what can only be described as an ideal location. It is next door to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir and across from Central Park, in the heart of the Upper West Side. The multi-level townhouse has 6,300 square feet of space for the buyer and a beautiful brownstone exterior.

According to Architectural Digest, the property is a Renaissance Revival brownstone. It has seven bedrooms, six bathrooms, and multiple powder rooms. The property is an entertainer's delight, and the new owners can enjoy quiet evenings at any of its nine fireplaces. Light beams in from outside and combines with high ceilings to make the home feel much bigger than 6,300 square feet. There is also a wine cellar, a screening room, and a backyard garden.

The property was originally constructed in the 1900s, and it was split into multiple units when Holiday moved into it in 1955. Although it has since been renovated, vintage touches like ornate vaulted ceilings with intricate moldings can still be seen throughout the interior. The property's centerpiece is a massive 1,100-square-foot suite on the third floor.

Trending: Arrived Home's Private Credit Fund’s has historically paid an annualized dividend yield of 8.1%*, which provides access to a pool of short-term loans backed by residential real estate with just a $100 minimum.

Listing agent Kelly Killoren Bensimon of Douglass Elliman told Architectural Digest, "It's like staying in the best hotel suite you can imagine. Every finish is top of the line." Holiday also recorded her final album, Lady in Satin, in 1959 while living at this brownstone. The property has changed hands several times since her passing. It was last purchased for $9.5 million in 2009.

The owner re-listed the property for $13.9 million in 2017, but it didn't sell. Then, Bensimon, who also starred in "The Real Housewives of New York City," listed the property in January. Killoren Bensimon did secure a buyer, albeit at a lower price than the 2017 listing. Although the buyer's name remains a mystery, there can be no doubt that they now own a prime piece of New York real estate.
